If I had already passed a Part I course
but got a low grade, can I re-enrol this
course to pull up my GPA and get into
my first choice?
If I end up with one of my 2nd to 5th
choices, is there a chance for me to
change my specialisation in Semester
Two?
When calculating Grade Point Average
(GPA) for entry into Part 2, do you still
count the failed grade even if it’s been
re-enrolled and passed in Summer
School?
How do I calculate my GPA to get into
Part 2?
As a general rule, a student may not enrol for any course the
content of which is the same as, or substantially similar to,
any course, for which credit has been received. Therefore,
the answer is no, you are not permitted to re-take Part I
course if you have already completed it. If you don’t get into
your first choice, you are expected to take up a place in one
of your alternate choices.
If you are unhappy with your final allocation of specialisation,
after one or two semesters of studies you can contact
Engineering Student Centre and we will be able to advise you
applying for Change of Specialisation. Please note that
changes are subject to students’ GPAs and also spaces
available in the specialisations. (There are very few places
available for transfers and there is usually a waiting list).
All grades for every attempt at a Part I (Engineering) course whether pass or fail - is included in the calculation.
We generally calculate your Part I GPA based on the seven
Engineering courses (or six if a conjoint student) – i.e.
everything EXCEPT General Education. This is done by adding
up the numeric value of each grade and then dividing by 7
courses (or 6 if conjoint) respectively.
A+ = 9
A=8
A- = 7
B+ = 6
B=5
B- = 4
C+ = 3
C=2
C- = 1
Failed = 0
For students doing Conjoint programme, grades from the
other component of their conjoint will not be incorporated
when calculating your GPA for part 2 Specialisation
selection.
Is the placement for Biomedical or
Software
(or any specialisation) typically
competitive?
The most competitive specialisations can vary from one year
to the next depending on what the current Part I students
are most interested in. This year the most competitive was
Biomedical, followed by Software. In previous years,
Software has been the most competitive.
Can I do two specialisations?
No, Engineering students are only allowed to do one
specialisation.
You will need to repeat the remaining course in Summer
School 2018. If you don't take or pass your repeated
course/s at Summer School then you will not be allowed to
enrol into your Part 3 courses in 2018.
If I had failed 3 Engineering courses,
re-enrol and pass 2 in Summer School
and subsequently meet entry criteria
of 90 points at Part I, when can I take
the remaining Part I course?
How high would my grades roughly
have to be to have a good chance of
getting into Biomedical Software or
Engineering?
As a general rule, you can expect a GPA of 6.0 or above to
get you your first choice – but this is not always the case. It
will also depend upon how many students select either
specialisation at the end of the year and then how well they
perform in comparison to your own grades.
I need to enrol courses in Summer
School and my results will come out
for the final round of allocation. My
worry is that, even if I get a fairly good
GPA, my first choice of

(Honours)
Semester via
No student is disadvantaged by having to enrol in courses at
Summer School. Every specialisation will hold back a number
of places to ensure those taking Summer School courses do
have the chance to get their first choice. (BUT your GPA after
summer school will also need to be high enough to meet the
cut-off too).
Please indicate Second Semester start.
Alternative Pathway which semester
do I indicate on my Part 2 selection
application?
What is the process of changing
specialisation if I had already
completed one semester of my Part 2?
Please contact Engineering Student Centre and we will be
able to advise you applying for Change of Specialisation.
Please note that changes are subject to students’ GPAs and
also spaces available in the specialisations. (There are very
few places available for transfers and there is usually a
waiting list for it).
If I wish to change my preferred
specialisation after the online
applications close on 27th November,
what do I need to do?
You need to send an email to [email protected] (make sure to include your
student ID in both the subject line and the body of the email).
Please keep in mind that if selections/allocations have already
been made (even if you haven’t been notified yet) then it may
be too late to change.
What do I do if I wish to change my
Conjoint programme to single
BEHON?
To change from a Conjoint programme to single BEHON, you
simply need to submit your online application via SSO. If you
are doing Conjoint and your GPA falls below 4.0, your
programme will be automatically bumped down to single
BEHON.
If I wish to change my single BEHON to
a Conjoint programme, what should I
do?
To change from single BEHON to Conjoint, you need to have
achieved a GPA of at least 5.5 in the last year of full-time
study. You must also maintain a GPA of at least a B- (4.0)
over all courses to continue in the programme. You can only
start a conjoint in first semester.
What does it mean if my grade says CP
(Conceded Pass)?
Conceded pass means you no longer need to repeat the
course. CP is only awarded up to a maximum of 20 points
towards a Part of the degree. You would only be eligible for
a Conceded Pass if you have failed only one course, and that
with a D+ grade, while also achieving a 2.5 GPA or above
across all courses taken in the year. A conceded pass is for
completion of the full Part requirements and would not apply
to the 90 point minimum required for eligibility to start Part
II. When calculating GPA, Conceded Pass (CP) has a numerical
value of 1.
Is ENGGEN 199 pre-requisite for
ENGGEN 299?
No, ENGGEN 199 (English Language Competency) is the prerequisite of ENGGEN 204 (Managing Design and
Communication) & required for a specialisation to be
allocated.
If offered a place in my first choice
specialisation, am I automatically
placed in that specialisation or can I
still turn it down and choose my 2nd
(or up to 5th) preference?
We only look at second and lower choices once we are
certain that you will not be selected for your first choice.
If you are offered your first choice, you can request a change
to your second (or lower) if you change your mind, subject to
places being available.
I was admitted into BEHON via BSc
Alternative Pathway and had been
given credits for Semester One papers.
I had completed PHYSICS 120, will I
still be considered into Civil knowing
that ENGGEN 121 is a pre-requisite for
this specialisation?
Having completed PHYSICS 120, you would have received
credits for this course to substitute for ENGGEN 121.
Receiving credits for ENGGEN 121, while not formally
enrolling into this course, will not affect your chances of
entry to that specialisation. Acceptance will depend entirely
on how your GPA compares to other students who have
selected Civil specialisation.
I can’t access the Part 2 online form. Is
there something I need to do?
If you have not completed your ENGGEN 199 requirements
and /or Academic Integrity Course (ACADINT A01) you will
be unable to complete the Part 2 online form. If you believe
you have met this requirement, but it does not show on
your academic record, please contact the Engineering
Student Centre.
My friends have received their Part 2
allocations but I have not. Is there a
reason why?
If you have not received your allocation, it is possible that:
1) you have been included in the waiting list (please let us
know ([email protected] )if you have not
received email from us, stating that you are due to be
allocated in the next round)
2) you have not completed requirements for the Academic
Integrity Course (ACADINT A01) or ENGGEN 199
3) you have not completed 90 points at Part I
4) you cannot be allocated in any of your Part 2 choices NOTE:
a very low GPA and not passing the courses required for
certain specialisations will limit options and may require the
passing of the required part 1 papers before a specialisation
can be allocated, even if 90pts are obtained.
Students admitted via the BSc alternative pathway who
were given credits for all Part I Semester One courses (total
of 60 points) and passed all semester 2 papers need not
enrol in Summer School.
However, students who received credits of 45 points or less
towards Part I will be required to complete the missing
paper/s in Summer School.
To find out how many credits you have been awarded for,
please log on to Student Services Online and view ‘My
Programme Requirements’.
No, your entry into Part 2 will be based on your Semester
Two GPA (counting only Engineering papers). Credits are
considered neutral, therefore, will not affect your GPA.
I was admitted into Part I Engineering
in Semester Two via the alternative
pathway, do I need to enrol into
Summer School?
As a student admitted into BEHONS
via alternative pathway, will my
grades from BSc count towards my
entry into Part 2?
Is there any restriction regarding
Conjoint Major/Specialisation
combination?
Yes, as per University of Auckland regulations, students
cannot enrol for courses that have substantially similar
content. (see below)
As per the regulations of the University of Auckland, students cannot enrol for courses that have
substantially similar content, thus, certain BE (Hons)/BSc conjoint programmes (such as BSc major
in Computer Science, Physics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics) must have formal prior approval
from the Faculty of Engineering and may even be declined.
Please note the following restrictions when planning your BE(Hons) conjoint:
