NEW SERIES: Living with Urban
Wildlife – Coyotes in Our Midst
Date: 1/7/2017
Time: 11 a.m.
Description: Join us for the kickoff of a
new speaker series, Living with Urban
Wildlife, which focuses on our
relationships with various wildlife how we
can coexist in our urban environment.
This month’s speaker is Linda Bolon,
representative of Project Coyote, a nonprofit group whose mission is to promote
coexistence through education, science,
and advocacy. For over 12 years, Linda
has worked in community outreach. She
will speak about coyote behavior, the
beneficial role coyote’s play in our urban
ecosystems, common causes of negative
encounters and how to avoid them. Tips
and tools for coexisting will also be
presented. This speaker series will be
held in the Nature Center classroom and
is supported by Maricopa County Parks
and the White Tank Mountains
Conservancy.

try your hand at archery, learn about

“Desert General Store” Walk
Date: 1/18/2017
Time: 9 a.m.
Description: The Sonoran Desert is
home to many plants that have been
used by people for thousands of years for
food, medicine, and other essentials.
Some of the products we consume and
use even today have their origins in the
desert. Join park volunteer Cindy Smith
on a short “shopping trip” along the Black
Rock Short Loop Trail (1/2 mile, barrierfree) to see and learn about some of
these fascinating plants. After the walk,
we will have the opportunity to try a few
samples of food and drink made from
some of the plants discussed during the
walk.

Stargazing for Everyone!
Date: 1/28/2017
Time: 7:30 p.m.
Description: Enjoy a night under the
stars! Listen to presenting astronomers
tell the stories of the sky as you gaze in
wonder at our universe. View the moon,
planets, star clusters, and distant galaxies
through telescopes provided by local
astronomers. Please bring a chair for the
45-minute presentation portion of the
program. This event will be held at the
Group Campground. Please try to arrive
by 7:15pm to facilitate parking. The
event will last approximately 2 hours.

hike but don’t like to hike by yourself? Do
you want to explore new parts of the
park? If you answered yes to any of the
above, then these hikes are for you! Join
park staff and volunteers for hikes of
various lengths featuring different park
trails. Hikes will be offered as scheduled
throughout the duration of the County
Parks 100 Miles in 100 Days Challenge
(Nov. 1-Feb. 8). Hike routes, distances,
and difficulty will vary – call ahead for
specifics. Please wear sturdy shoes and
bring a snack and plenty of water. Please

Sunrise Hike
Date: 1/9/2017
Time: 9 a.m.
Description: Set your alarm and get a
great start to your day! Join a park
volunteer for a sunrise hike along the
Black Rock Long Loop Trail (1 ½ miles).
You will have the opportunity to see the
sunrise from a viewpoint, experience the
Sonoran Desert as it awakens, and also
see ancient petroglyphs along the trail.
Please leave your dog at home. Don’t
forget your camera! Please meet
promptly at Area 4. Don’t be late – the
sun won’t wait.

Hike Into History – Willow
Springs
Date: 1/21/2017
Time: 8 a.m.
WHITE TANK MOUNTAIN REGIONAL PARK CALENDAR OF EVENTS
Description: Join us on a hike back in
time! Our journey will take us to the
Willow Springs area, where we will visit
the remains of an abandoned dwelling
and historic site to see what stories the
pieces of the past can tell us. The hike is
7 miles roundtrip and is rated moderate
to difficult. Please bring at least one
gallon of water and a snack. This hike is
limited to 10 people. Please meet at Area
7 for the hike. Please call the park
Nature Center, 623-935-2505, to register,
beginning January 1st.

Reed on this easy 2 mile walk to go back
in time. Use your sense of sight, hearing,

of human history along the Waterfall trail.
