Boston signs new
Plymouth Compact
Boston has made a commitment to
join in a celebration of the historic
400th anniversary in 2020 of the
departure of pilgrims aboard the
Mayflower for the New World.
Pilgrims from Boston, escaping from
religious persecution, were also among the
first to colonise America, famously laying
down roots in an area of Massachusetts that
was to also be named Boston.
Boston is among communities most
involved in the early colonisation of America.
On November 21, 1620, the settlers signed
the original Mayflower Compact, pledging to
follow the order of a civil “Body Politick” and
obey laws for the good of the colony. This
compact became the basis for the American
Constitution.
Boston Mayor, Cllr Alison Austin, travelled
to Plymouth to sign a new Plymouth
Compact on November 21. The modern
compact will see “pilgrim” communities
including, among others, Boston, Plymouth,
Gainsborough, Immingham, Doncaster,
Harwich, Dartmouth and Southampton,
commit, together with those in America and
the Netherlands, to work in partnership
toward a joint commemoration of the sailing
of the Mayflower in 1620.
There may be benefits for participating
communities from promotion of heritage, arts
and culture and boosts to the visitor economy
through tourism.

Sign up to a winter warmer of Energy Switch savings
Here is the latest chance to sign up to potential savings on your gas and electricity bills for
2015 with the Lincolnshire Energy Switch Scheme.
You can join the scheme from today with a chance to save hundreds of pounds on your
gas and electricity bills.
Nearly 5,000 Lincolnshire households have now registered to join forces to get better
deals from energy suppliers, making the county’s residents one of the biggest groups to
tackle the energy companies for better tariffs.
You can register online at www.boston.gov.uk/LESS If you do not have internet access,
a friend or family member who has can do this on your behalf, or alternatively you can visit
the council offices in West Street, Boston, with a copy of your annual gas or electric bill and
someone will help you register.
If none of these options are suitable for you, you can register by calling the free phone
number 0800 048 8439. This registration number is open 8am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday.
Once households have registered their interest, the energy suppliers will be invited to
compete with their best offers.
The scheme is free for households to join and there is no obligation to take up the winning
supplier’s tariff offer.
The scheme is open to all those in the UK so let friends and relatives know about it.
The more people who register, the more interested energy suppliers are securing them as
customers and the better the deal they offer.
