Spelling Week 4:
Digraphs—th, wh, ch, sh, -tch
The following table explains the spelling rules we are reviewing right now. There are words that follow the rules included
as well as a dictation sentence. Students will be learning and practicing the rules at school, so no homework with these words
is required (unless you choose, as the parent, to do so). On the date indicated above, students will be quizzed over 10 of
these words and the dictation sentence. There will be a bonus/optional word given that will follow the rules, but is not
included on this sheet.
REMEMBER:



A diagraph is a consonant sound which cannot be represented by any single letter in our alphabet.
There are 4 letter combinations that are diagraphs: th, wh, ch, sh
‘-tch’ is often used at the end of one-syllable, short vowel sound words: match
(exceptions: much, such)
