Information for Submitting Articles to Law Reviews

Information for Submitting Articles to Law Reviews & Journals
_____
July 2011
The following are two charts useful for the law review/journal article submission process. The first
chart contains information gathered from the journals’ websites about the following topics:
• Methods for submitting an article (such as by e-mail, ExpressO, or regular mail);
• Any special formatting requirements;
• How to request an expedited review; and
• How to withdraw an article after it has been accepted for publication elsewhere.
The second chart contains some information about rankings of the journals and the law schools
associated with them. The first three columns are the overall ranking, academic/peer assessment score,
and lawyer/judge assessment score for each school from the most recent U.S. News & World Report
rankings. The other three columns are data about each journal from Washington & Lee’s law review
ranking website. The “citation ranking” is the total number of citations to the journal over the past
eight years. The “impact factor” is the number of citations per article per year. The “combined rating”
is a weighted combination of the total citations and impact factor rankings. You can find more detailed
information about this data on the Washington & Lee website at http://lawlib.wlu.edu/LJ.
We hope this information is helpful. We provide it with several important caveats:
o
First, the charts cover only each school’s “general” law review, not specialized journals.
Obviously there are excellent specialized journals on many topics. Anyone submitting an
article to law reviews will want to consider the specialized journals relevant to their article and
particular area of expertise.
o
The charts cover 202 schools and their journals. We have tried to be comprehensive; any
omissions are inadvertent, and we’d be happy to hear what we missed so that we can add them.
o
We do not mean to imply anything about how much importance, if any, should be given to
numerical rankings of law schools or law journals. These sorts of rankings are certainly an
incomplete, if not badly flawed, way of evaluating schools and journals. We provide the
ranking information because it is something that many people consider to some extent in the
submission process. Obviously each author can decide what to make of it.
We’ve also posted a list of links to the submissions information on each law journal’s website. That
list can be found at http://www1.law.umkc.edu/Faculty/rostron/law_review_submission.htm.
For a helpful and more detailed discussion of the submission process and related issues for law
professors, see Nancy Levit, Scholarship Advice for New Law Professors in the Electronic Age,
16 Widener L.J. 947 (2007), at http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=939007.
Good luck with your submissions.

Believes a vast majority of law review
articles can convey their arguments
effectively with between 20,000 and
37,000 words (inclusive of footnotes).
Will accept submissions exceeding
32,000 words in the event that the length
is merited, but will give strong preference
to pieces that are fewer than 32,000
words in length.
Text and citations should conform to the
Bluebook. Footnotes are strongly
preferred over endnotes.
If you submit your piece via mail, enclose
a cover letter that references the name of
your manuscript, and provides your
address, telephone number, and e-mail
address.
The Review encourages the use of
gender-neutral language.
Please send e-mail to the Executive
Articles Editor at
[email protected]
In the body of the e-mail, please
include
• your name
• the title of your manuscript
• the name of the journal that has
extended an offer to you
• the date the offer expires
• the phone number or e-mail address
of a contact person at that journal
• If you submitted electronically, the
identification number assigned to
your piece
To increase the chances of timely
review, please attach to the e-mail an
electronic version of your manuscript.
While we strongly discourage it, if you
are unable to send e-mail, you may
request expedited review by calling the
Executive Articles Editor at (212) 8546185. If the Review makes an offer of
publication following an expedited
review, the author has only one hour
from the time of actual notification in
which to accept the offer.

Although we encourage contributors to
concurrently submit their articles to
multiple journals, we will not consider
manuscripts that are published or under
contract to be published in another
journal. As a matter of policy, we
consider manuscripts available on the
internet or through other alternative
media outlets as published.
Has no minimum or maximum page
requirements for submissions, but
strongly believes the vast majority of law
review articles can convey their
arguments most effectively in no more
than 70 journal pages (approximately
35,000 words–including footnotes).
Authors who target the length of their
submissions to meet this standard are
more likely to be selected for publication
than those who exceed it.
Please format your manuscript with
double-spaced body text and footnotes
rather than endnotes. Citations should
conform to the Bluebook.
In addition to your manuscript, please
provide a cover letter and curriculum
vitae that include the following:
a. a short synopsis of your manuscript;
b. a return mailing address;
c. a telephone number;
d. an e-mail address; and
e. a short list of your recently published
scholarly work.
Our submission process has many steps
and may require four to six weeks to
complete fully. If you require expedited
review of your manuscript because you
have a pending offer from another
journal, please contact us immediately
by e-mail. Please provide the following
information:
(1) the manuscript's title,
(2) the date when you need an answer,
and
(3) your e-mail address and telephone

honor requests for an expedited review,
we will not omit any stage of our

The Review has no formal length
requirements, and will review all
submissions, regardless of length.
However, we endorse the position that
most articles can effectively convey their
arguments within 40-70 journal pages.
We believe that establishing page limit
guidelines will enhance the quality of
legal scholarship, and also shorten and
improve the editing process. To that end,
we strongly prefer articles between
15,000 and 30,000 words, including
footnotes.
Manuscripts should be double-spaced and
use footnotes rather than endnotes. Text
