Soccer Field Stormwater Management EcoRain 1” Drainage Cells™ move rain and excess irrigation away from field surface to side drains. Side drains of EcoRain 2” Drainage Cells™ or EcoRain Tanks™ capture and transport water to EcoRain Tanks™. EcoRain Tank™ Cisterns store water for irrigation. FIELD PREPARATION 1. Excavate entire field area 9” to 12” depending on grass root depth. Create a high ridge down the center of the length of the field with a 1% slope to the sides and ends. 2. Excavate a trench around the perimeter of the field – size dependent on use of EcoRain 2” Drainage Cells, Half, Single, Double or Triple Tanks in the trench. Make the trench sidewall adjacent to the field a clean straight cut. 3. Compact the field area and base of perimeter trench to 95% proctor, removing all stones, lumps, debris & sharp objects, and level. 4. Place 2" clean sand on field and trench sub-bases, and screed the surfaces. 5. Blanket the field area, and bottom and sides of the perimeter trench with a 10 mm flexible impermeable liner. 6. Line the perimeter trench with enough Geotextile fabric to wrap fully around the Tanks or Cells. Place the EcoRain Tanks or 2” Cells end to end fully around the perimeter in the trench, butting them tightly against the sidewall adjacent to the field, and wrap with the Geotextile fabric. Overlap the top flaps of fabric so that the open flap is toward the field to allow placement of the 1” Drainage Cells from the field to sit directly and open on top of the perimeter Tanks or Cells. Pull the liner up against the sides and backfill the sides outside the liner with clean fill. 7. Place a layer of EcoRain 1” Drainage Cells over the entire field area, or in strips. Overlap the EcoRain 1” Drainage Cells on the top of the perimeter rows of EcoRain Tanks or Cells so that water draining off the field will fall directly into the Tanks or Cells. 8. Cover the layer of 1” Drainage Cells with 6 oz. Geotextile Fabric (see specs) and tuck under the ends. Cover with 2” sand. 9. Place 60% clean sand/40% organic soil mixture (no clay) over the field and perimeter trench and seed per manufacturers installation instructions. 10. Or if using rolled grass, wash soil out of the grass roots (in an area away from the field) to encourage roots to grow into the soil mixture. The soil used for rolled grass is usually clay - which is too hard to install over the lighter soil mixture. Compress grass with a weighted roller. WATER HARVEST TANK / IRRIGATION 1. Determine the volume and location of the water harvest tank(s) – extend the perimeter line of Cells or Tanks to connect with the water harvest tank(s). Use EcoRain Tanks for this structure with an impermeable liner. Refer to Submittal for installation details. Consult pump design specialist for size of pump(s) and irrigation lines. TYPICAL SOCCER FIELD SIZING 1. Total grass area is usually 120 meters x 80 meters = 9,600 square meters (394 feet x 262 feet = 103,228 sq feet) 2. Within the total grass area, the playing field is usually 105 meters x 68 meters = 7,140 square meters (344 feet x 223 feet = 76,857 sq feet) SIZING & COST EXAMPLE 1. 23,808 pieces EcoRain 1” Drainage Cells to blanket over playing field and extend over perimeter trench. 2. Perimeter trench = 120 meters x 80 meters x 2 = 19,200 lineal meters (1,314 lineal feet) = 584 EcoRain Tanks end to end x 2 rows = 1,168 Tanks x ER-501 Single Tanks = 1,168 Single Tanks = 142,549 liters = 5,034 cubic feet = 37,658 gallons storage capacity 3. Water harvest Tanks behind the goals = 351 Triple Tanks each x 2 = 702 Triple Tanks = 248,900 liters = 8,803 cubic feet = 65,846 gallons 4. 76,857 square feet 1” Drainage Cells = $49,970 + 1,168 Single Tanks = $18,123 + 702 Triple Tanks = $32,677 + 22 Rolls 6 oz Geotextile Fabric = $9,900 + liner $28,000 + shipping $3,000 = $141,670 EcoRain, Liner & Geotextile Fabric Product Cost NOTES 1. Additional product costs include sand, pumps, irrigation lines, tape & ties. 2. In the USA, cost of installation is usually equal to the cost of materials. 3. Using two or more water harvest tanks for irrigation will keep sprinkler heads out of the playing area. 4. Please refer to EcoRain Tank Submittal and specifications for full installation details.
