STAR POWER: The Pac-12 had eight different student-athletes from four schools garner preseason
All-America honors. Oregon State had two student-athletes featured on two different preseason All-America
lists with Nick Madrigal on both Baseball America and NCBWA’s teams and Bryce Fehmel on both NCBWA
and Collegiate Baseball’s teams.
GOLDEN SPIKES: The USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award Preseason Watch List features 50 amateurs,
seven of which are student-athletes from four different Pac-12 teams. With seven, the Pac-12 has the thirdmost representatives among all conferences. Stanford leads the way for most representatives by one tea,
with three Cardinal student-athletes featured, tying Florida and TCU. Now in its 39th year recognizing the
top amateur baseball player in the country, seven former Pac-12 baseball players have won the award, most
recently pitcher Trevor Bauer of UCLA in 2011.
STOPPER OF THE YEAR: The Pac-12 has nine student-athletes from nine different universities on the
NCBWA Stopper of the Year Preseason Watch List, the most among all conferences. The National Collegiate
Baseball Writers Association will be presenting the Stopper of the Year Award to the top relief pitcher in Division I baseball for the 13th straight year in 2017.
DRAFT: Every Pac-12 school had at least one student-athlete drafted in the 2016 MLB Draft: Arizona (6),
Arizona State (5), California (7), Oregon (5), Oregon State (5), Stanford (4), UCLA (12), Utah (1), Washington (3) and Washington State (3). ASU leads all NCAA schools with 414 total MLB draft picks, and at
least one Sun Devil has been drafted every year since the draft’s inception in 1965.
FAMILIAR FACES IN THE DUGOUT: After welcoming three new coaches last season, all 11 coaches return
for the 2017 season. Second year Arizona head coach Jay Johnson looks to match or beat his performance
last season. The Wildcats made it all the way to Game 3 of the NCAA College World Series before falling
to Coastal Carolina. Three other Pac-12 teams also made it to the postseason- Arizona State, Utah, and
Washington.
One of the premier coaches in college baseball history and a man whose name is synonymous with the
Stanford baseball program, head coach Mark Marquess enters his 41st and final season with the Stanford
Cardinal. Under his tutelage, Stanford has captured two NCAA titles, advanced to the CWS 14 times, appeared in the NCAA Regionals 29 and won at least a share of nine Pac-12 titles. A member of the American
Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame, Marquess opens the 2017 season as the second-winningest active coach
in the nation with a career record of 1,585-862-7 (.647). Coach Marquess and the Cardinal look to end a
legendary union with a bang.

AROUND THE PAC-12
• Arizona (49-23, 16-14) tied for third in the Conference last season, but took their journey all the way
to Game 3 of the NCAA College World Series. That was the program’s 34th all-time appearance in NCAA
history (1954-present). After a stellar last season, second year head coach Jay Johnson and the Wildcats
look to top their performance in 2017.
• Arizona State (36-23, 16-14) earned its spot in the NCAA Baseball Championship for the fourth-straight
year and the 39th time overall in program history, the fourth-most in NCAA history. The Sun Devils return
NCBWA National Player of the Week (March 29) and Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week
(March 29) Ryan Hingst, a junior right-handed pitcher.
• California (32-21, 14-16) tied for eighth place in the league last season. The Golden Bears lost two key
players to the draft, including Pac-12 Player of the Year Brett Cumberland and pitcher Daulton Jefferies.
The Bears do return four position players, four pitchers, and have four impressive newcomers.
• Oregon (29-26, 14-16) tied for eighth place in the league with California last season. The Ducks, a
streaky team, had some big wins during the season, winning series’ against College World Series participant UC Santa Barbara, then-No. 9 California and at then-No. 24 Oregon State. UO returns six position
player starters in 2017. Offensively, the Ducks will be led by a pair of honorable mention All-Pac-12 Conference picks from last season senior outfielder Jake Bennett and junior outfielder A.J. Balta.
• Oregon State (35-19, 16-14) finished the 2016 conference season tied for third in the Pac-12. The
Beavers welcome back NCBWA and Baseball America Preseason All-America honoree Nick Madrigal.
Madrigal was named the 2016 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, and earned spots on both the All-Pac-12

All-America honoree Bryce Fehmel.
• Stanford (31-23, 15-15) finished in a tie for sixth place in the league last year. The Cardinal return
Baseball America Preseason All-Americans Colton Hock, Tristan Beck, and Quinn Brodey. Hock, a
right-handed pitcher, was a 2016 Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week, Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention
honoree, and was second in the Conference standings for hits allowed with 37 last season. This will be
head coach Mark Marquess’ 41st season.
• UCLA (25-31, 12-18) looks to bounce back after ending last season 10th in the league, one year
after winning the Pac-12 title in 2015. UCLA returns two starting pitchers, Louisville Slugger Freshman
All-American Kyle Molnar and Baseball America Preseason All-American Griffin Canning.
• USC (28-28, 17-14) tied for fourth place in the Pac-12 last year. The Trojans add a large newcomer
class with 16 new faces on the roster for 2017. USC also returns seven starters and four pitchers, inlcuding junior right handed pitcher Mitch Hart.
• Utah (26-29, 19-11) had a phenomenal 2016 season, taking home the Conference title for the first time
in program history and advancing to NCAA Regionals, its first appearance since 2009. The Utes became
the first team since Stanford in 1993 and 1994 to win the league after finishing last the previous year.
The Utes return junior pitcher Jayson Rose, a 2017 preseason All-American selection for NCBWA second
team and Collegiate Baseball third team.
• Washington (33-23, 17-13) finished second in the Conference last season and earned a trip to the
NCAA Regionals for the second-straight year. The Huskies return a majority of their 2016 squad and
welcome in a top-10 ranked recruiting class. Washington was ranked 21st by Collegiate Baseball News. It
is the highest preseason ranking the Huskies have received in the major polls so far. Washington returns
Noah Bremer and Joe DeMers on the mound.
• Washington State (19-35, 11-19) finished 11th in the Pac-12 last year. Second year head coach Marty
