20th March 2017 - The Marist Catholic Primary School

Weekly news from The Marist Catholic Primary School
For week beginning 20th March 2017
Dear Parents,
Thank you to those of you who attended the consultation evening about the Xavier
Multi Academy Trust (MAT). The governors meet next week and you will be informed
of future developments in due course.
Meanwhile, life in school for the children carries on as usual and this week has been
no different. The children have enjoyed the warmer weather and skipping is fast
becoming our most popular pastime during lunch breaks. The high point of the week
was our visit from Google Explore, which allowed the children to access virtual reality
technology in order to study aspects of their topics. Thank you to Miss Neocleous for
organising this exciting event. Our food science room continues to be well used, with
children from our Reception classes making hot cross buns in our Lenten season. Miss
Brady and children from 3B helped us to celebrate St Patrick’s day - happy feast day
to all our Irish families.
Due to Easter falling right at the end of the Spring holiday, we have reviewed our
traditional Easter Bonnet and Easter Garden activities. As you know, we will be having
a Reconciliation service and children’s Stations of the Cross towards the end of term,
but in addition, we will be decorating paper plates with a Spring theme and choosing
the best designs to be transferred onto ceramic plates for permanent display. We will
also be having a class competition to make a fish from coins, the proceeds of which
will go towards our CAFOD appeal, alongside proceeds from our sponsored spellathon.
Some staffing news: in July, Mrs Mather will be leaving us to join St Thomas of
Canterbury School in Guildford. This is a decision she has made in order to manage
family commitments. It is a great loss to us, but Mrs Mather has offered to assist us in
recruiting her replacement which will ensure continuity for music within the school.
She will go with our very best wishes for the future and grateful thanks for all she has
done whilst she has been with us.
Finally, your prayers please for the family of Ms Samantha Carroll, and in particular,
her children at this incredibly sad time.
With every blessing,
Kate Licence

A MARIST LEARNER
IS...
Thinking about what it is to be a good
learner:
Able to learn well
on their own
Always ready to learn
it’s about being the best that you can be!
Enthusiastic, willing to take part
and speak up
A risk taker - always confident
to have a go
Happy to try and try again
Not afraid to learn from
mistakes
Able to learn well with others
Able to learn well on their own
Reflective - able to think and talk
about our learning
Able to learn
well on our
own
 We can find and
use our own
resources safely
and independently
 We take
responsibility for
our own choice of
activity, resources
and learning
 We make varied
decisions for our
own learning – not
always choosing
the same activities
Being able to learn independently requires
resilience and a personal drive. In the school
context it is about having the confidence to have
a go and take responsibility for yourself. If
there’s a problem, to think it through before
asking for help – asking others for help is really
important and not to be dismissed but can you
try first and try to work out how to do something
before asking? You may well find that you can do
it after all.
It’s also about having the confidence to trust
your instinct – to have confidence in yourself.
We are trying to instil that in all our children and
I am sure you are doing the same at home; not
doing everything for the children but providing
them with the space and the security to have a
go on their own.
 We can stay on
task
 We can find our
own resources
 We respect our
friends and don’t
interrupt their
learning
 We are confident
to have a go
 We stay on task
 We can work
independently of
a teacher
 We are
resourceful
 We can find, use
and take care of
learning resources
 We take pride in
our work and
abilities
 We can use
different
strategies to
tackle the same
challenge
 We can ask the
right questions to
help us in our
learning
 We always look to
have a growth
mindset no matter
what the challenge
 We have confidence
in our own abilities
 We recognise our
strengths and are
open to develop
those areas we find
harder
 We are able to think
of strategies to help
ourselves
 We want to do our
best always

LOST PROPERTY
Today we have emptied the “Left Property” basket and hung the unnamed items –
there were 60 items – outside under the canopy, anything unclaimed by end of
term will be donated to PTA or recycled.
In an attempt to reduce the amount of misplaced items we have registered the
Marist Catholic Primary School with Label Planet, a family owned business, which
promotes a school fundraising scheme through which the school can receive 30%
commission on every order placed quoting the school reference number 23267.
Why choose Label Planet? Label Planet’s Stikins® name labels are made of an
advanced vinyl; all you have to do is stick them onto the wash-care label of clothes.
They are a one-size, multipurpose label which can also be used on school items such
as shoes, plastic boxes, water bottles, pencil cases etc.
They work! “I’ve been ordering Stikins for 3 years now. They stick on anything and
everything and have remained in place even after the washing machine, tumble dryer
or dishwasher. They’re just the right size and I love the fact one type of label works
for everything!” from a year 5 parent.
Brilliant service – “I ordered late as I had forgotten to do so before I went on holiday
and as worried they wouldn't arrive on time for the first day of school. But they did
and they're great. So far they stick on anything and everything and have remained in
their place. Would definitely recommend”.
For each order placed ordering The Marist School’s unique code 23267, we earn 30%
commission for the school. You can order online (www.stikins.co.uk), on the phone
(01270 668076) or by using the order form on the leaflet we’ve sent home with your
child. If you use the link on the ‘Parents’ page of our school’s website, the school’s
code is automatically filled in for you.

As part of our ongoing support of the vital work done by local charity,
the Friends of Chernobyl’s Children (Woking), the Marist is having a
Mufti day on Friday 12th May, when pupils can come dressed in
Summer clothes and donate old Winter clothes for the children of
Belarus. Winter temperatures in Belarus can drop to minus 40 and
warm jackets (old ski wear) gloves, hats and winter boots are
essential. In addition there is a suggested £2 monetary donation from
pupils for wearing Mufti. There will also be a fun competition on Mufti
Day and an opportunity to win House points! For parents, it’s a good
excuse for a cathartic clear out of clothing for a great cause!

Considerate Parental Parking
At the Marist it is very important to us that the journey to and from school is a safe and fun experience for everyone.
We are hoping to reduce the risk of accidents by easing the congestion outside the school gates and in the
surrounding roads. This will generally improve the safety of all our children and their families.
We want to encourage you to leave the car at home and try an alternative form of travel to school.
Walking, Park and Stride, Car Sharing, Scootering and Cycling
Our School Travel Plan and Travel Guide which promotes all these modes of travel can be found on the school website
under the heading, ‘Parents, Travel Plan’. We must all think carefully about how we park and especially how we treat
our neighbours, respecting their property at all times, thinking about the safety implications when we don’t park
responsibly.
With this in mind, we ask that you be as considerate as you can when parking at the beginning and at the end of the
school day. If you see dangerous driving or parking around the school (or anywhere for that matter) you can report
your concerns directly to Surrey Police at:
https://my.surrey.police.uk/reportonline/drivesmart.
As part of the Council’s discussion on our expansion plans the Councillors were very concerned to ensure that their
traffic enforcement officers as well as the police maintain a very close watch on the parking around all schools – so
please be considerate and please keep within the law.
