Conversation Starter
Have your child select a poem or song that he or she likes. (Ideally,
the poem or song should rhyme.) Work together to identify any
figurative language used. Talk about how figurative language adds
to the tone and mood. Do the same with words with connotative
meanings (meanings that are implied in addition to the literal,
“dictionary,” meanings). Talk about the rhyme scheme and any words
or phrases that are repeated. Have your child write the title of the
poem or song in the center circle. Together, complete the appropriate
sections of the graphic organizer with words from the poem or song.
Finally, talk about why your child likes the poem or song.
