Official Newsletter of Flotilla 22, Ithaca, NY: News & Views – March 2016 Our First Public Service (dated April 14, 1998), contributed from the archives by Walt Robinson. Coast Guard Identity Cards Required! Yes, this was true in 1942. There was a war on, World War II. In June 1942 the Coast Guard sent a mobile unit to various locations that were involved in shipping by water. Ithaca had a barge canal terminal. All residents and those employed within 500 feet of the terminal and the Cayuga Lake Inlet as far as the breakwater (by the “hog hole”) had to register with the Coast Guard; this included fishermen of the area. Those registering had to furnish two front view photographs 1 ½ by 1 ½ inches and proof of citizenship plus the endorsement of two persons. Fingerprinting was done by William Zimmer, Ithaca Police Chief. This was a small project; over one thousand applicants were expected and an actual 1300 were issued. So, who assisted in this herculean task of security? Ray Robinson, Commander of the Ithaca Coast Guard Auxiliary and Arthur Stallman, commander of the Power Squadron. Art Stallman was also a member of the Auxiliary. These gentlemen traveled with the Coast Guard mobile unit throughout the area, Watkins Glen, etc. One of the problems at the time was: Do golfers on the Newman Golf Course have to register? I wonder if they ever did. This was the first Public Service performed by the then fledgling Ithaca Flotilla. The flotilla was chartered May 2, 1942; the registration started in June. Here we are 55 years later, still serving the Coast Guard and the public. Note: May 2, 2017 will be our 75th Anniversary. The image above is courtesy of the www.uscgnews.com. The caption with it read “In the 1940's, Coast Guard Reserve (Auxiliary) flotillas augmented U.S. WWII coastal defenses helping protect the homeland from possible enemy attack.” From the Helm, Gene Little, FC Squawk box: Many members may be relieved that this was a fairly mild winter, weather-wise. I’ll also note, it flew past with seemingly less time than normal to get a leg up on classroom & on-line training and take a short break. However, as mentioned last month, the statistics show how busy you all have been on training, so it’s catching our breath that may have suffered! I want to highlight an area of training & possibly perception, which is very important but I have delayed because of all that we are concentrating on–Training on Diversity. Quoting President John F. Kennedy “If we cannot end now our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity.” We all gain when we welcome and learn from the diverse viewpoints, backgrounds and strengths of our members and community. Rather than try to cram the slides for this training in to an already busy Flotilla agenda, I will, in this and subsequent Newsletters, cover the materials. We will set aside a portion of each following Flotilla Monthly Meeting agenda for open discussion. I will lead the first discussion, BUT I am looking to have someone step up and become our FSO-DV The 1st is Valuing Diversity – 1. Diversity is about inclusion and engagement! 2. The most important issue is always human dignity and total quality respect! 3. Prejudice is eliminated by developing high performance teams! 4. True diversity is ensuring diversity of thought at all levels of the organization! 5. Everyone adds talent and value; each person must be developed and offered full opportunity to achieve! 6. Diversity solutions must be situation specific! 7. Diversity is a philosophy and is everyone’s responsibility! Innovation, inventions, learning and, maybe most importantly, change come from diversity. We see it every day – the environment we are working in and are trying to protect is changing. Our Weather and its severity on an all too frequent basis. Our niche with the ABS training of the public is now on-line and free. Paddlecraft (canoes, kayaks and SUP) are the fastest growing segment of vessels being sold and with this increase has come the accidents and fatalities. Imagine if you will, some of us don’t even know what an overhead projector is or back to the time when you talked into phones instead of texting. Typewriters (?) were for committing text to a written message. Change! Embrace change, welcome it, and adapt with the power and advantages of diverse resources applying their varied backgrounds and training. Upcoming Events: Social: the 4th Pillar – 3/31 Glenora: Pasta night, with our own Tony S. (“Chef Anthony”) joining Executive Chef Orlando Rodriguez. Please join us if you can. April has more public education & outreach plus a flurry of additional member training: First ABS course of the season will be April 9 & 10th. Finalizing a Cold Water Awareness seminar, scheduled for April 30th. Member training steps up a notch in April with refresher training for: o Operations (Sat Apr 2 at USCG Station Oswego) and o Vessel Examiner Refresher (Sat, Apr 23 at Brewerton Fire Hall) Please check the calendar for details and come out to help present, learn and/or network with the boating public!
