Our Summer Newsletter will give readers an overview of the
many activities, both curricular and co-curricular, that our
teachers and students have been involved in since Christmas.
This has been a busy and successful year for our school
community. The level of student participation and attainment
in so many areas is a credit to all involved. These events require
both the interest and the volunteerism of our teachers and in
Coláiste Chill Mhantáin we are delighted that we have both in
equal measure. I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf
of myself and Mr McCaul, to complement the students on their
participation in school life and the Parents’ Association for their
support and contribution to the school. Finally I would like to
acknowledge the role played by our Board of Management
during the school year and indeed the continued support of
our CEO Mr Kevin Lewis and Co Wicklow VEC.
Enjoy your summer.

County Wicklow Senior A Football Final
– County Championship
Coláiste Chill Mhantáin 2-12 Coláiste Bhríde Carnew 1-13
The Wicklow Post Primary Schools Senior “A” Football Final
took place in Aughrim on Thursday evening 16th May, in
what was to be a thrilling encounter between Colaiste Chill
Mhantain and Colaiste Bhride Carnew. Simon Bouchier
opened the scoring for the Wicklow town school with an
early attempt on goal which resulted in a point, and this
was followed by a well kicked score from Gavin Weir.
Colaiste Bhride responded by racing into a lead of 0-4 to 02 after ten minutes, with well taken points from half
forwards Brendan Behan and Roan Lynch and two from
centre forward Sean Mulligan who was excellent
throughout. Both sides missed chances including goal
efforts at both ends which resulted in great saves from
keepers Gary Browne for Wicklow and Cathal Murray for
Carnew.
Then a super run from CCM corner forward Jordan
Petticrew resulted in a point for full forward Paul Ellis. CCM
continued to attack with corner back Martin Cullen also
coming forward on a great run. However it was Simon
Bouchier at half forward who did the hard yards to deliver
a great ball inside to Adam Cox, who found the net to give
Colaiste Chill Mhantain the lead, 1-3 to 0-4, on nearly
twenty minutes. However Colaiste Bhride were quick to
respond with points from John Fleming and Dean Barnes
and another great effort from Sean Mulligan. Adam Cox
added a point from a free to leave it all square at half time
1-04 to 0-7, although the Wicklow school did have another
effort deflected from the Carnew goal after a dangerous
ball in from Aaron Nugent.
Similar to the opening minutes of the first half, Simon
Bouchier opened the scoring in the second with another
well taken point, while a minute later half back John
Crowe was unlucky to see a tremendous effort come back
off the crossbar. However Colaiste Bhride then began to
dominate possession and scored four points without reply
including several from the boot of Sean Mulligan. Wicklow
brought in James Kavanagh off the bench and moved
Graham Merrigan into the middle of the field from where
he began to cover the ground from end to end. Adam Cox
added two more vital scores for Wicklow from frees before
being replaced by Brian Doyle. Sean Mulligan added
another great score for Carnew which was answered with
a pointed free by Aaron Nugent. This left the score 1-8 to
0-12 with over 15 minutes played in the second half. Then
an excellent ball in over the Wicklow backs was well
gathered by Carnew’s Roan Lynch who buried it in the back
of the net. This left four points in the game with just over
ten minutes to go. Carnew added another after an
excellent run and a well taken score from Brendan Behan.
Wicklow had to endure several agonising wides as they
tried to claw their way back into the game before points
from Brian Doyle and a Graham Merrigan free left it 1-10
to 1-13 with minutes to go. A shot at goal from another
Merrigan free eventually rebounded to Jordan Petticrew
Our newly formed Equestrian Team competed for the first time in Gorey, Co. Wexford in the Inter-Schools
Equestrian Competition. This being the first competition for the team in the Interschool’s Hunter Trials
they performed with great style and horsemanship. The event was hosted by Coláiste Bhríde, Carnew and
proved to be a positive and
enjoyable experience for all
involved.

This was an evening of incredible drama and excitement
which definitely showcased the talent and determination
of our young footballers. Colaiste Chill Mhantain had
excellent performances all around the pitch including Sean
Buckley and Emmet Cullen in the full back line, and Ronan
Doyle and James Manley in the half backs. It is the first
time for Colaiste Chill Mhantain to get our hands on the
Martin Gleeson cup, which was presented to captain Paul
Ellis by Coiste Iarbhunscoileanna chairman Brian Breen.
Hopefully this will be the first of many! Graham Merrigan
received the man of the match award sponsored by
Frankie Sports, Wicklow Town. Well done to all the team
and mentors Pat Sheehy and Paul Tobin.
Colaiste Chill Mhantain: Gary Browne, Martin Cullen, Emmet Cullen, Sean Buckley; John Crowe, James Manley,

EQUESTRIAN TEAM
As well as taking an active
part on the equestrian team,
students
attend
an
equestrian course in the
school whereby they learn
more about the looking after
and well-being of their
horses. This is facilitated by
Ms. Brenda Shortt.
who managed to swing it over the bar. With two points
and a minute left in the match Graham Merrigan stepped
up to take another free in front of the Carnew goal and
this time rifled his shot to the net. Brian Doyle managed
to add on another point for CCM and then it was all over
with the final score 2-12 to 1-13.
First Year Parent
Information Evening
Parents and students who will join Colaiste Chill
Mhantain in September 2013 attended an
information evening in the school on Wednesday
January 16th. Over the course of the evening
parents were informed about the school’s
expectations, subject options and the facilities
the school has to offer.
The Fifth Year Senior Mentor team gave a
presentation on their role in helping students

AWARDS DAY 2013
On Friday May 17th Coláiste Chill Mhantáin celebrated its annual awards day
with parents, staff and guests. The awards ceremony is an important occasion
which recognises the achievements and contributions made by students and
staff to life in the school. Mr. Dunne and his jazz band provided some soothing
entertainment during the intervals.
Over the course of the morning students received numerous awards. The high
standards attained by our students and the scope of their talents, was clearly
evident. Awards ranged from endeavour, extra – curricular activities to
academic excellence. Student of the Year award was presented to Eoghan
O’Sullivan and LCA student of the Year was awarded to Lesley Meyer. Paul Ellis
won Sports’ Star of the Year. Best Junior Certificate results 2012 was presented
to Luke Finlayson while Gregg Byrne received the award for the best Leaving
Certificate results 2012.
There was huge excitement among football fans in the audience with our guest
of honour none other than international football player, Mr. Paul McShane. It
was very fitting that Paul presented awards to students who have represented
Ireland in soccer and rugby.
There was a great sense of occasion and excitement throughout the school.
Congratulations to all involved in this ceremony. We would like to take this
opportunity to thank our guests Mr. Paul McShane, Mr. Declan Marnane,
chairperson of the Parents’ Council and the Board of Management, Mr, Michael
Lawlor, Chairperson of Co. Wicklow VEC,members of the Board of Management
and Parents’ Council for joining us to celebrate our awards day.
Transition Year Night
of Celebration
Coláiste Chill Mhantáin's Transition Year Night of Celebration took place on Tuesday May 21st.
The school hall provided the perfect venue in which to display the numerous activities, projects
and skills our Transition Year students have been involved in over the past academic year.
It was a most enjoyable occasion of entertainment, fun and achievement. Through
presentations and demonstrations, our students gave their parents a great insight into their
Transition Year, a year which involved taking part in activities, being proactive and acquiring new
perspectives. One of the high points of the evening was when James Brennan hosted “Coláiste Chill
Mhantáin’s Who Wants to be a Millionaire”. Our Deputy Principal, Mr. McCaul was in the hot seat and
remained calm while James asked some tricky questions.
It was a very entertaining night with the students receiving awards for Attendance, Portfolio, Work
Experience, Academic Excellence and Gaisce –the President’s award, not to mention the various
certificates that were also awarded.

Seminars for Parents
Community Awareness
of Drugs (CAD)
On Tuesday January 15th Community Awareness of
Drugs(CAD) began in the parents’ room. This is the
second cycle of this course in the school and it ran from
10am to 12pm every Tuesday for a duration of six
weeks.
This course provided participants with an opportunity
to update their information on drugs and their effects
explore attitudes, beliefs and decisions related to drug
misuse, while developing a family orientated drug
prevention strategy.
The idea for this course came about following
numerous discussions with parents who found this
topic very difficult to discuss with their growing
children. The course ran for a total of eight weeks with
parents giving a very positive review with regards to
feeling more confident and empowered when
broaching this topic with their children.
Computers
Computer classes for parents resumed in room G25
during the month of January. During this course
parents worked on their MOS certification.
Incredible Years
Programme
This programme was facilitated by Dr.Patrick Loughrane
Senior Clinical Psychologist with the HSE and nurse Tara
Noone Childcare Work Manager.
The Incredible Years programme is designed for parents
of children who are challenging boundaries and limits
set by their parents and are not responding to regular
parenting ideas. The programme is a step-by-step
approach over fourteen sessions where a different topic
and area of parenting is explored each week. The
parent’s knowledge accumulates from week to week,
and each parenting idea lends itself to the one that
follows it.
Healthy Food Made Easy
As obesity is a problem for society today this course
gave parents the opportunity to focus on producing
healthy dishes from basic ingredients. The two and a
half hour class was attended by fourteen eager chefs
who enjoyed not only the experience but also the
culinary delights produced.
The sessions are two hours long but are packed with
group discussion, a follow up from parents from the
preceding week, role play, and discussion around the
content of video scenarios which are designed to
stimulate new ideas and reinforce the techniques being
presented each week.
The course has its fun and light hearted moments but
carries a strong emphasis on imparting skills to parents,
and strengthening their relationship and bond with
each child. Parental feedback from those who have
completed the course is consistently positive, and the
research basis for the programme is well documented
showing consistent positive outcomes for parents and
children.
Speakeasy
In January of this year a
parenting course based
on the topic “talking to
your child about the facts
of life and relationships”
4
commenced in the Parents’ Room. This course was
facilitated by the Irish Family Planning Association.
First Aid
A basic course in First Aid facilitated by Des Kelly from
the HSE commenced in the Parent’s Room in April. This
course equipped parents with a basic training in First
Aid. The course was funded by Co. Wicklow VEC
Community Education.
A total of fourteen parents participated in the course
and all received their certificates at the end of the
training. It is hoped that this course will run again in
the new school year..

GERMAN EXCHANGE
My name is Sean O Callaghan and I am a Transition
Year student in Colaiste Chill Mhantain. During the
month of February, I was most fortunate to travel with
four other students to Hamburg Germany as part of a
German Exchange trip. The following is my account of
the 12 days I spent as a German teenager.
Sunday 10th February:
After a one hour and forty minute flight we touched
down in Hamburg’s Fuhlsbuttel Airport, where I was
acquainted with my host family the Mutschlers,
Jorg, Barbel and their son Robin. From the airport
we headed southeast to Bergedoff( where I was
going to spend the next twelve days) which has
approximately 120,00 inhabitants. That evening I
spent in the company of my host family as we dined
in the popular “Block House” restaurant.
Thursday 14th February:
I have attended school for the last few days with
Robin my host friend. Their school day is rather
different to ours as they begin school at 8.00am and
finish at 2.00am.The name of the school is Luisen
Gymnasium and is similar both in student capacity
and size to my own school. Unlike our school
students are assigned a base classroom and don’t
move except for practical subjects. I also noticed that
German students have a more positive attitude
towards school and are most eager to learn.
However I was somewhat surprised at the lack of
technology used in the classroom compared with
our school. In Luisen Gymnasium, I experienced a
different type of teaching where the teacher directs
the lesson and students ask many questions and
interact with one another during the lesson.
Friday 15th February:
Today I visited Neuengamme Concentration Camp
which is situated on the outskirts of Bergedoff. As I
entered the concentration camp I was struck by the
silence and how barren the camp was. All I could see
was row upon row of bare bricked buildings and text
panels beside long rectangular rows of stones
informing visitors about what was contained in the
camp. This was an amazing yet sad experience as I
learned extensively about the horrific events that
occurred within the camp during World War 2.
Sunday 17th February:
Myself and my host family attended an ice-hockey
game which was amazing as I had never been to
one before. The match took place in the O2 Arena.
The Hamburg Freezers were playing the Straubing
Tigers. I was personally surprised by the atmosphere
before the game as fireworks and loud music rang
out throughout the stadium. The game itself was
Senior Mentors
PHOTOGRAPHY & ART COMPETITION FEBRUARY 2013
On the 1st February 2013 the senior mentors organised photography
and art competitions both with specific themes. The photography
competition had the theme of “a man’s best friend”, but was not
limited to animals while the art competition involved the First Years
drawing a cartoon character which was comprised of two other
cartoon characters.
The entries to the competitions were judged on the 18th of February,
the art competition entries were judged by one of the school’s art
teachers, Ms.Minnock, and the photography competition was judged
by Ms. O Brien who runs the school’s photography club.
The winner of the art competition was Scott Armstrong 1 Lee and the
winner of the photography competition was Alisha Byrne 1 Corrib.
They were both awarded
XtraVision vouchers.
DISNEY TRIP
On Sunday 19th of May
2013 a group of 83
First Year Students
accompanied by their
Senior Mentors and 12
members of staff headed to Paris. The group enjoyed two days of
rollercoaster rides, fireworks and the magic of Disney. High spirits
were not dampened by the weather and the whole group braved the
Tower of Terror on of the most terrifying rides in Disney.
Summer 2013
fast paced and electrifying and I have to admit I
would prefer ice-hockey to soccer.
Wednesday 20th February:
This was Lusien Gymnasium’s sports’ day and the
designated sport for the class I was a part of was
basketball. We played many games throughout the
day and showed the Germans how the Irish play
basketball. After some tough, physical games an
eventful game drew to a close. Later that evening I
went sight-seeing around Hamburg, visiting places
like Hamburg Harbour where we took a boat trip on
the river Elbe. The highlight of the evening was the
visit to St. Michael’s Church where we viewed
Hamburg from the belfry of the church.
Friday 22nd February:
I attended school as a German teenager in Luisen
Gymnasium for the final time today and bade
farewell to all my new German friends. We swapped
email addresses and phone numbers in order to
keep in touch. My host family then accompanied me
to the airport for the final leg of my journey home.
I thoroughly enjoyed my sojourn in Germany, the
people were very friendly and it helped me greatly
in improving my German vocabulary and accent.
SPORTS DAY
On Friday 24thMay
2013 the Senior
Mentor Team along
with the First Year
pastoral care team
organised a sports day
for all First Year Students which was held in the grounds of the
College. Activities included face-painting, three-legged race and tugof-war to name but a few. The day finished up with pizza for all. The
weather was on our side and this brought an enjoyable end to a
positive first year in CCM.
SENIOR MENTOR TEAM 2013-2014

Make a Book
One of the highlights of the library this
year was putting together our entry for
this year’s National “Make a Book
Competition”. The Make a Book
Competition has been running since 1999
and usually involves well over a hundred
post-primary schools and up to 2,000
students. Students are encouraged to make their own book on any topic of interest to
them. Usually, the book takes the form of a large work of art and, in many of the schools;
the art department is as centrally involved as the English and Engineering Department.
For our entry, the JCSP Co-ordinator and librarian selected twenty five JCSP students to
take part in the project, we then canvassed the students to see what topic they would
be interested in undertaking for this year’s competition. After much discussion and
debate, the students finally settled on a project about the Solar System with a particular
emphasis on Mars and on the Mars rover-‘Curiosity’, which has received a lot of publicity
and is currently on Mars carrying out tests to see if the planet has ever sustained life. A
number of the students had also been involved with making models of the Apollo 11
moon missions and had displayed a great interest in the topic and in astronomy
generally.
After deciding what the topic would be, the twenty five students were divided into
groups and pairs and were each given individual topics to research and write up. Each
group or pair of students were given individual planets in the solar system to research.
Other students were given broader topics to research such as the birth of the universe
or the search for life on Mars.
As well as researching and writing the book, two other groups of students worked on the
model of the Mars Rover and on the display box of the Martian surface into which the
model would be displayed. The wooden box used for the display was made with the
help of the woodwork department. When this was completed, it was then handed over
to the art department where it was painted and decorated by another group of students
to resemble the surface of Mars. The actual Mars Rover itself was put together with the
help of the metalwork department working with another group of JCSP students. This
inter-departmental work was a great example of the cross-curricular participation
carried out every year for the Make a Book competition.
On 14th March, the students attended the Civic Offices in Dublin for the national
exhibition of the Make a Book entries where their display received much positive
feedback.
Performance Poetry
Workshops
Another highlight of the year was the series of Performance Poetry Workshops that the
library organised in conjunction with Poetry Ireland. The workshops featured
professional poet, Dave Lordan. The aim of the workshops was for young people to
explore their creative side
in a fun and entertaining
way. Through language,
writing and poetry, the
young participants were
able to experience a side
of themselves that they
hadn’t explored before.
Using word games,
6
puzzles, rhymes, slang, humour and brain storming.
The participants included ten students from the JCSP programme in the school as well
as ten Sixth Class students from St. Ernans National School. Many of these students will
be First Year students in September. Their participation in the programme was very
beneficial for the students and was an ideal introduction to Coláiste Chill Mhantáin. The
two groups of students were mixed together at the outset of the programme and they
worked together extremely well.
Accelerated Reader
Accelerated Reader is an
internet-based
reading
programme that has become a
vital element in improving
reading ages in the school as
well as developing a reading
culture among the students.
Set up in January of 2012, the
Accelerated Reader Programme
has been rolled out to all
students in First and Second Year,
as well as a selection of students from Third and Transition Years. Over 250 students are
now enrolled on this programme.
The success of Accelerated Reader lies in the fact that the programme is able to identify
each student’s reading ability by undertaking a short reading test. Students are then
assigned reading levels based on the results of this test. Students choose books, which
are colour-coded, based on their reading ability. This system ensures that students are
reading books according to their ability and level of interest.
After reading their book, each student then logs on to the Accelerated Reader website
and undertakes a short quiz on the book they have just read. These quizzes test the
students’ comprehension of the text. Prizes are awarded at the end of the year to those
students who obtain the highest scores on their reading quizzes and also to those who
read the greatest number of words. Two First Year students have read over three million
words this year. Four other students read over one million words each.
Paired
Reading
Our Paired Reading programme
took place once again after the
Christmas term. The Paired
Reading Programme involved
ten parents reading on a one-toone basis with ten students from
First and Second Year. The
students each have their own
file where their progress is
tracked by the parents and the
librarian each week.
International research has shown that one-to-one paired reading is extremely effective
in improving reading ages. Our paired reading programme is one of the most effective
literacy interventions run in the library.

Niall de Burca
As part of the annual Summer Celebrations for
our Junior Certificate School Programme
students, the library arranged for the
renowned storyteller, Niall de Burca, to come
to the school to entertain the students with his
strange and funny stories. The students and
teachers thoroughly enjoyed the morning and
were delighted that Niall participated in the
afternoon awards ceremony.
Since Christmas the library has received visits
from many schools in the locality. During these
visits, the librarian gave the students a tour of
the library and explained how a library works
and what they, as incoming students, can
expect from such a resource. In a number of
cases, a story was also read to the students.
World Book Day
To celebrate World Book Day this year, which takes place every March, a number of
activities were organised by the library.
Summer Reading Programme
In association with the School Completion Office, the library once again undertook its
Summer Reading Programme with a number of local primary schools taking part. Fifth
and Sixth Class students from schools in Wicklow visited the library during the months
of May and June to learn about the library and how it can enhance learning.
After a brief presentation on how the library works the students were then given the
opportunity to borrow two books from the library to read over the summer months.
Students were also given book review sheets in order to review the books they have
borrowed.
Outreach Work
The library has also put in place an outreach programme for many primary schools in the
area. This programme facilitates national School visits to the library during a school day for
a brief introduction to the library and its function. Outreach work also includes our librarian
visiting a number of primary schools to participate in ‘read aloud’ sessions to the students.
A number of First Year students attended a live webcast, which was screened in the
library. Billed as ‘The Biggest Book Show on Earth’, this broadcast, which was transmitted
live from London, featured a host of well-known writers for teenagers discussing their
books and their careers including Tony Robinson, Lauren Child, Shirley Hughes, Cathy
Cassidy, Anthony Horowitz and Francesca Simon of Horrid Henry fame.
A number of First and Second Year JCSP Students also took a trip to “Bridge Street Books”
in Wicklow where they were able to buy a book using World Book Day vouchers.
During the 9.40a.m. class period a number of students also took part in the “Drop
Everything and Read” initiative.
For the last twenty minutes of the
class, the teachers stopped what
they were doing and students
were allowed to select some
reading material from a box left in
their classroom. This initiative is
designed to help foster a reading
culture among students.
CCM and Healthy Living
Coláiste Chill Mhantáin launched its first “Healthy Living Days” on February 25th and 26th this year. The aim of this event
was to educate the school community with regards to the importance of a healthier lifestyle and to demonstrate how it can
be achieved in simple practical ways.
A wide range of activities were organised for the event. Students attended a presentation from Ms. Ruth Charles a dietician
on cardiovascular health and sports nutrition. Ms. Anne Kavanagh, a health promotion officer with the HSE and Ms. Louise
Doran spoke to students about healthy food choices.
Information stands and demonstrations also raised awareness among students and staff of the importance of a healthier
lifestyle. Yoga classes given by Ms. Eileen Verveen proved very popular with students and they were very competitive in the
Coláiste Chill Mhantáin mile organised by our PE department.
During break time on both days students were treated to delicious smoothies, fresh fruit salads and nutritious cereal bars.
A health wise quiz was organised for all First Year students. Students were also given a very informative cookery
demonstration by head chef at Donnelli’s restaurant Ms. Linda O’Sullivan where they learned how to prepare nutritious yet
interesting snacks.
A poster and poetry competition was also organised around the theme “Healthy Living”. These competitions generated a great
deal of enthusiasm among our budding artisans. We would like to thank all the guest speakers and instructors who made
this event so worthwhile. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank sincerely the host of sponsors in the locality
who gave so generously to this event; Power’s Centra, Rathnew, Supervalu, Tescos, Wicklow, Valu Centre, Donelli’s Restaurant
and School Completion. Their contribution proved invaluable to the success of the event. We appreciate their support and
we intend to continue this link with the outside community in the coming years.

LCVP Trip
Our Fifth Year Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme students embarked upon a trip to the ‘Chocolate
Garden of Ireland’ in Tullow, to witness the production of the different types of chocolate and ice cream
products that the business produces. Armed with this information which they acquired on the day they will
write up a Summary Report which is a core Portfolio item in this subject.
Upon arrival at The Chocolate Factory the students were given a
history lesson regarding the origins of coca and then a geography
lesson at to what part of the world the coca plant grows in, and
the climatic conditions necessary to grow it. Just to keep the
students on their toes they were asked on three different
occasions to sample the white, dark and milk chocolate and give
their opinion on the taste of it. This was followed with a
presentation on the company’s time line from when and how the
company started to where it today.
Agricultural Science Trip
On Wednesday March 6th the Senior Cycle
Agricultural Science students donned their
wellies and took to the fields as they paid a visit
to three different farms in the locality as part of
the practical element of their course. The first
farm visited was a potato farm owned by Mr.
Tommy Delahunt, the second was a sheep farm
owned by Mr. Eugene Stephens and the third a
dairy farm run by Mr. John Connolly. Over the
course of the trip students gathered information
which will allow them to finish their practical
coursework. The day, although tiring, proved
very productive.

Coláiste Chill Mhantáin was a hive of activity the
week of Seachtain na Gaeilge” which took place
from the 11th-15th March. This event which is
celebrated every year has built up an incredible
momentum in the promotion of our native
language and culture. Students participated in
all events with great enthusiasm. First and
Second Year students took part in a poster
competition”as gaeilge” where they displayed
great artistic ability. All Third, Fifth and Sixth
Year students participated in a table quiz
resulting in an enjoyable yet educational
experience. A “céilí mór” was organised for all
our Transition Year students on Friday March
15th which finished the week off on a high note!
Throughout the week students were encouraged
to speak “cúpla focal” to teachers and in return
they were entered into a draw for a delicious
Easter egg each day. VEC scholarships for
Coláiste na nOileain were awarded to the
following students; Rory O’Carroll, Bobby
Keenaghan and Lucy
Byrne. The Rotary
scholarship for
Coláiste na bhFiann
was presented to
Ellen Doyle.
Amnesty International
National Week of
Solidarity
On Wednesday March 6th the Senior Cycle
Agricultural Science students donned their
wellies and took to the fields as they paid a visit
to three different farms in the locality as part of
the practical element of their course. The first
farm visited was a potato farm owned by Mr.
Tommy Delahunt, the second was a sheep farm
owned by Mr. Eugene Stephens and the third a
dairy farm run by Mr. John Connolly. Over the
course of the trip students gathered information
which will allow them to finish
their practical coursework. The
day, although tiring, proved very
productive.
8
The students also viewed clips of footage from national television programmes that have given the company
exposure. Students were also informed about the different trade shows that the company exhibits in both
nationally and internationally and the different awards that they have collected at these events. This has
gained the company a great deal of publicity free of charge which has been hugely beneficial.
Like all good educational trips there is nothing like putting the theory into practice, and so each student was
given a polycarbonate mould of a teddy bear that came in two halves. They were then instructed to design the
inside of the mould with white chocolate using small paint brushes. The mould was then half filled with liquid
chocolate and the lids fitted on top. Each student then had to shake the bear for one minute to remove the air
bubbles and then for the next three minutes to keep turning the bear so that the chocolate would be evenly
coated on the bear. The most creatively decorated bear was photographed and posted on the company’s
Facebook page . These were then taken away and put into the freezer to harden.
While they were hardening the owner Jim Healy answered questions posed by the students. This proved to be
very informative and interesting as students learned what countries the company export their products to, and
how in The Chocolate Garden Of Ireland came up with the idea of an Irish breakfast ice cream with real
sausages and rashers. The students really enjoyed their experience and it opened up their minds to the real
possibility of setting up their own business’ in the future.
ART TRIP
The end of February took our Sixth Year
Art Students on an educational journey
to many famous landmarks in Dublin.
Students as part of their Art Appreciation
Programme for the Leaving Certificate
visited The National Museum, The
National Gallery of Ireland and two
Georgian buildings, The Customs House
and Trinity College.
The students identified the main architectural features of the Georgian buildings. In both the gallery and
the museum students were asked to analyse the layout and arrangement of the exhibitions and to discuss why
they are important in enhancing our appreciation of art.
The gallery tour guide gave students a great in-depth knowledge of some of the key artists on their curriculum
such as Jack B. Yeats & Caravaggio. In the museum students focused on Pre-Christian artefacts such as the
Loughnashade trumpet and the Petrie Crown. It is important for students to have the opportunity to see
these artefacts first hand.
This visit also gave students a greater understanding of the design details and techniques used in their
production. The whole experience reaffirmed what the students have learned in class and gave them a further
focus for their Art examinations in June.

Junior Certificate Schools Programme
Willow Sculptures
Science
Willow Sculptures is an “Artist in the Classroom initiative” funded by the Junior
Certificate Schools Programme (JCSP). A local artist Ms. Lusi Elliot was invited to
work with our First Year Art students to make indoor and outdoor sculptures
using willow.
First Year Science students travelled to the Ecology Educational centre in Dublin
Zoo in March. The students took part in a field study of a habitat and took samples
of soils and trees and different types of insects.
Over a period of five weeks students made a piece of work from living willow
cones planted with sweet pea, painted shields or dream catchers. This project
was also entered into the Wicklow VEC Environmental Awareness Competition
where it was awarded first prize in the Cultural Environment category.
Upon their return all students
completed a portfolio on their
field study and their experience.
Each student received a certificate
for their participation and many
students received a special
mention from the field study
instructors as well as an extra
reward at the Summer
Celebrations.
Metalwork initiative
Summer Celebrations 2013
The annual Summer Celebrations took place during May for all JCSP students. In
the morning session students were treated to a storytelling workshop with
renowned bilingual storyteller Niall De Burca and in the afternoon all students
along with their parents gathered in the hall for the awards’ ceremony.
The work from the various initiatives that ran throughout the year were exhibited
for both students and parents to view and there was a presentation with
photographs and videos of the students at work during the initiatives. Ms Smith
began by acknowledging the students contributions and efforts throughout the
year and Mr Donoghue congratulated the students on their achievements.
The awards presented varied from Accelerated Reading to involvement in “Make
a Book”. Students also received awards in each year group for Endeavour and in
each class group students received awards for their efforts in Maths and English.
The highlight of the day was the graduation of Third Year Students from the
programme. These students were presented with their final profiles from the
Department of Education which contained a record of all the statements covered
since they started on the
programme in first year. The
department certificate was also
accompanied with a reference
from the school detailing
students’ positive engagement
in the programme.
This year’s metalwork initiative involved students designing & building a model
spacecraft to commemorate Neil Armstrong’s achievement through the NASA
Apollo Programme. Students in collaboration with the school library constructed
a model mars rover to scale and
submitted the work as part of the
"Make a Book" and Wicklow VEC
"Environs" exhibits. A follow on
group work project was
undertaken in metalwork classes
where students used meccano to
enhance learning through
assembly and group work
projects.
Dance workshop
Twenty two First Year students participated in a dance workshop in May. The
students were introduced to a number of old school and hip hop dance moves.
These were followed by street dance moves. The instructor Kaisha Graham then
choreographed a motif which incorporated all the moves. The students were in
awe of Kaisha who is an extremely talented dancer and instructor. By the end of
the day, the students had learned two routines and touched on some break
dancing moves. Both the boys and girls in First Year applied a great deal of effort
and really challenged themselves. Each student received a tee shirt at the
Summer Celebrations

in this initiative
INTERCULTURAL DAY
On Thursday March 21st Coláiste Chill Mhantáin held its annual
Intercultural Day. The day was organised as part of the Yellow Flag
Programme which celebrates the many cultures and diverse backgrounds of
our school population. The theme of this year’s Intercultural Day was
“Folklore and Culture”. Staff, students and parents of Coláiste Chill Mhantáin
along with invited guests, celebrated work completed by students on
various aspects of folklore, culture and traditions from around the world
and many projects were on display around the school. All First Year students
participated in a quiz based on the various cultures and religions that exist
in our school community. Students were also involved in surveys, poster
competitions and presentations. This event created a great sense of unity and community spirit.

AIB Build a Bank Challenge
ISPCC Presentation
Coláiste Chill Mhantáin’s bank “The Food Bank” opened its doors to students and
staff in January. A representative from the Wicklow branch of AIB was present on
the day and offered very useful advice to the bank officials.
The launch took place at lunchtime in our lecture room where students opening
accounts were treated to delicious homemade muffins. The bank is open every
Thursday at lunchtime and any student who wishes to save is welcome to make
lodgements. The team also organised a number of promotions to entice new and
existing customers.
The opening of the bank in Coláiste Chill Mhantáin provides a great opportunity
for students to develop the practice of saving and will benefit them greatly in the
long term.
Mr. Donal Barrett, a representative from the Irish Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Children (ISPCC), visited the school in January and was presented with a
cheque for €630. This impressive sum of money was raised by a group of Transition
Year students who carried out a “Holly Days” street collection before Christmas. The
students’ generosity and consideration for others was acknowledged by Mr. Barrett
TY Mobile Phone Classes
Coffee Morning
During the month of March a group of Transition Year students assisted members
of the local community in developing the functionality of their mobile phones. This
initiative was part of their Young Social Innovators (YSI) programme and it provided
a great opportunity to forge links with the wider community.
A group of Transition Year students (TY1) hosted a coffee morning on Wednesday
March 6th.The coffee morning was organised in aid of an educational programme
for children who live on the streets of Brazil. Parents, staff and students were invited
to attend the coffee morning where they could purchase a range of home baked
treats and freshly brewed tea and coffee.
There was a significant amount of money raised during the event. This programme
was founded by Fr. William Maurick, an uncle of a Transition Year student in CCM.
DATS Assessment
On Monday February 4th all Transition Year students participated in the DATS
(Differential Aptitudes Test Scores) test. Students were tested in eight different
aptitude areas involving- verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning, abstract reasoning,
perceptual speed and accuracy, mechanical reasoning, space relations, English
spelling and language usage.
The objective of the test is to highlight for students key areas that they may be
suited to or interested in pursuing. This test provides a wonderful opportunity for
students to identify and select subjects in Senior Cycle that will match their abilities
and will suit their chosen career paths.
Pancake Party
On Tuesday February 5th “Pancake Tuesday”, a group of Transition Year Home
Economics students hosted a pancake party. Students and staff enjoyed freshly
flipped pancakes with a choice of delicious fillings. A great morning was had by all
and a substantial sum of money was raised for the National Children’s Hospital,
Tallaght.

Transition Year “All Things Digital”
A group of our Transition Year students have been teaching people in the local
community how to use their mobile phones, laptops and other digital equipment.
It has been a very positive experience for both generations and it is hoped this link
with the community will continue in the coming years.
TY Adventure Trip
After an early rise on Wednesday 20th February, Transition Year Students headed off
to Carlingford Outdoor Activity Centre in Co. Louth. After a quick check-in the
students and teachers were brought off to the challenge course where the students
took part in both mental and physical challenges. During this event some students
found the water traps, this was a signal that all had not gone to plan! After lunch
it was back up to the high ropes course for some more team building exercises and
impressively every student participated even those who originally felt they hadn’t
a head for heights.
The activity of Canadian Canoeing commenced the next morning in the freezing
cold loogh;those first into the water echoed a symphony of discomfort but again
everyone braved the elements and participated. That afternoon it was time for rock
climbing and abseiling. This brought some worried looks on people’s faces but not
one student sat it out and everyone kept encouraging each other to succeed. The
night time activity was the Carlingford Challenge which is always great cráic, with

activities ranging from dry Weetabix eating to talking to a tomato!!
The general consensus was that Friday’s activities were the best. The morning
started by strolling through Carlingford Village in camouflage overalls carrying
“machine guns” as we made our way up to the laser combat zone. After a few hours
of running around forests amidst scattered flurries of snow, the group headed back
to the centre for lunch. Now it was time for zorbing, archery and body bounce. With
everybody having been thrown down a hill and knocked upside down, it was time
to head home.
President’s Award
A group of Transition Year and Fifth Year students recently undertook the adventure
section of their Gasice award also known as the President’s award. The trip involved
walking from Roundwood to Glenmalure with an overnight stay in the Glendalough
hostel. This was the final part to be completed by the students in order to obtain the
silver medal in this prestigious award. Despite inclement weather conditions and
difficult terrain students spirits remained high and overall they had a very positive
experience.

Enterprise Awards
On Friday March 8th three Transition Year Enterprise companies from Colaiste Chill
Mhantain, “Linguica”, “Talent Show” and “The Locker Shelf” competed with twenty
six other mini companies from across County Wicklow in the Student Enterprise
Awards’ Programme. The Enterprise Awards were hosted by Wicklow County
Enterprise Board in Clarmont Campus, Rathnew, Co Wicklow.
The company “Linguica” was awarded “Best Presentation” on the day and received
a crystal trophy, framed certificate and a cheque for €100 for their unusual and
entertaining presentation.
The Lingucia company devised an Irish card game. It encourages students in primary
school to learn vocabulary for the Irish language in an innovative, interactive and
exciting way. This involves matching pairs of cards, one card has a picture on it and
the other has the Irish word which describes the picture. The first student to match
three pairs is deemed the winner. The group now hope to extend this into other
languages that student learn in school and also adapt it for second level students.
All three companies are to be complimented for their efforts and diligence for their
work throughout the year.
Leinster Schools’ Woodturning Competition
Three of our Transition Year Students, Jake Butterworth, William Anderson and
Timothy Rahill, entered The Leinster Schools Woodturning competition run in
conjunction with Strahan Timber. Judges from the Irish Woodturning Guild took
some time to deliberate as the standard was excellent for the first year of the
competition. All three of our Transition Year Students finished in the top six from a
large field of entrants.
Paintballing Trip
As a finale for the Transition Year Programme a paintballing trip was organised for
the students in the middle of May. The group travelled to Roundwood where the
students battled it out in a purpose built “battlefield” using the latest paint balling
kit. Not only was great fun had by all but students also tested their skills of
endurance, leadership and teamwork.
Transition Year Driving Simulation
On Wednesday May 15th a group of Transition Year students took part in a driving
simulation in the school. Driving simulators are proven to be excellent practical and
effective educational tools to impart safe driving training techniques for all drivers.
This proved a very educational and enjoyable experience for the students involved.
It will no doubt be of great benefit to students who wish to apply for their driving
test in the future.

Celebrity Economists
The Business Department at Coláiste Chill Mhantáin hosted
an Economics Day on Friday April 12th. All senior cycle
Business, Accounting and Economics students attended.
The event began with a debate between senior cycle
students on the motion “This house should leave the euro”.
Mr. David McWilliams, a well-known economist and local
TD Mr. Stephen Donnelly, adjudicated the debate. They
were very impressed by the standard of debating and they
complimented the students involved.
Following the debate, Mr. McWilliams gave a lively
presentation which was made very relevant to everyday
life. Mr. Donnelly then spoke on matters pertaining to
economic policy which Economics Students in particular
found beneficial in their preparation for their Leaving
Certificate Economics examination.
Afterwards a question and
answer session ensued in
which our celebrity guests
were put under pressure to
answer students’ questions.
Our students really
engaged in the whole event
and found it both
interesting and worthwhile.
Practical and Oral
Examinations
During April Leaving and Junior Certificate
practical and oral examinations took place in the
school in various subject areas such as Irish,
French, German, Music and Home Economics.
Students worked diligently to prepare for these
examinations and we would like to wish them
every success in their written examinations in
June. Also during the month of April Leaving
Certificate Applied (LCA) 2 students received task
results in Vocational Education, Practical
Achievement and Contemporary Issues. Students
performed very well and we also wish them the
very best in their upcoming examinations in June.

coursework journal, a group of Second Year
students (2 Liffey) travelled to St. Patrick’s Church,
Wicklow on Tuesday April 30th. Upon arrival at the
Church, students were greeted by the parish
priest, Fr. Donal. During the visit the group
participated in a Mass, the theme of which was
“Joy and Thanksgiving”. After the Mass students
were given the opportunity to interview Fr. Donal.
The aim of the interview was to develop their
understanding of his role and the role of other
members of the parish Church. The interview also
gave students a greater insight into the impact
these roles have within the community and how
they assist in the creation of a sense of community
spirit. The visit finished with some light
refreshments kindly provided by Fr. Donal.
Geography Field Trip
The Third Year Environmental Social Studies (ESS)
students travelled to Poulaphouca Power Station
on Wednesday May 15th to complete a
compulsory field study as part of their course
specification. Students were given a presentation
which was followed by a guided tour of the Power
Station. They found the trip very informative and
it was of great assistance to them as they wrote
up their reports which were then examined in
May.
Le Petit Déjeuner Francais
The social area of the school was a hive of activity
on Friday morning the 10th May as the French
Department hosted the French Breakfast Morning
or more appropriately called “Le Petit Déjeuner
Francais”. First year students were treated to
croissants baguettes and hot chocolate which is a
traditional French breakfast and both students
and staff really enjoyed the experience.

CCM SPEAKS OUT
Trinity Debating
Adam Duffy and Philip Carthy participated in the Philspeaks Competition in Trinity
College Dublin on January 18th and 19th. The initial stage of the competition consists
of four rounds of British Parliamentary Style debates which means that the topic and
the teams role on the table is only given
15 minutes before the debate.
The motions this year were, “This house
would abolish state pensions”, “This
house believes that adoption agencies
should give first priority to gay and
infertile couples”, “This house would
torture the enemy” and finally “This
house would create a legal market for
organs”. The adjudication was closed but
valuable feedback was given at the end
of each debate.
Wicklow County Council
Environmental Debates
The team were delighted to make the
break into the top sixteen for a place in the semi-final. The next challenging motion
was “This house would ban the Burka”. Despite a very convincing argument the team
were not successful in securing a place in the final on this occasion; nonetheless the
experience the students gathered was invaluable.
A determined debating team comprising of Matt Doyle (Fourth Year), Max Kane (Third
Year) and Murray Kennedy (Second Year) were successful in getting through to the
second round of the environmental debates on Friday January 18th. Their task was to
propose the controversial motion that, “Ireland should revise planning legislation to
exclude elected members from the planning system”.
First and Second Year Public
Speaking
Following victories against Dominican College, Wicklow, Presentation College, Bray
and Avondale CC in the semi-finals the team forged ahead to the finals where they
proposed the motion that “The media have played a key role in promoting scepticism
about climate change”. The team fought hard in their proposing argument but were
not deemed winners of the competition.
A total of twenty one First and Second Year students took part in the final of the
public speaking competition on Wednesday 27th February. In class their English
teachers had guided them through the art of speech writing in order to reach this
stage of the competition.
Congratulations to Murray Kennedy who was
awarded the accolade of best speaker on the
night. The judges commented on the high
standard of both teams but on this occasion EGS
were the victorious.
The standard was very high and the range of subject matter varied, from the difficult
areas of depression and suicide to the more light hearted topics of school uniforms.
The adjudicators for the event were local FG councillor Irene Winters, past pupil Colm
Fitzpatrick and Mr. Diamond an English teacher in the school. The winners on the day
were Murray Kennedy first place, Ciaran Noble second place with Jack Robinson
securing third place.
Matt Doyle a member of
the senior debating team
was MC for the afternoon,
and while the judges
deliberated over the
winners the senior
debating team
entertained the audience
with a sample debate.

An assessment morning for First Year
students who will be joining the school in
September 2013 took place on Saturday
January 26th. During the assessment
morning students availed of the
opportunity to meet with members of the
teaching staff and familiarise themselves
with the building.
Grandparents’ Day
Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) 1 Art students held
an art exhibition in the school during the month of
February as part of their General Education task.
Students designed and created their own clay box
which was based on aspects of their own identity.
The exhibition was open to staff and students and
generated a great deal of interest. There was a wide
range of talent and creativity evident in the
exhibition.
Irish Guide Dog Visit
On Thursday January 31st Mr. Denis Lambert from the
Irish Guide Dog Association, visited the school and
gave a presentation to the Junior Cycle students on
the important work carried out by the Irish Guide Dog
Association.
Summer 2013
Students also met a puppy who had just commenced
training as a guide dog. The information gathered
during the presentation will form the basis of the
students CSPE Action Project which is an integral part
of their Junior Certificate Exam.
On the afternoon of Wednesday 30th
January 2013, Coláiste Chill Mhantáin
celebrated Grandparents’ Day, where
grandparents of First Year students were
invited into the school. There was a great
atmosphere
of
celebration
and
community spirit as Grandparents arrived
to be greeted by their grandchildren.
Upon arrival everyone gathered together
for a Prayer Service, recognising and
celebrating
the
influence
and
contribution grandparents have in the
lives of our First Year students. Afterwards,
there were refreshments and an
opportunity to have a chat with a cuppa.
The students then took the opportunity
to bring their grandparents around the
school to show them the school building
and its many facilities and to introduce
them to their friends and teachers.
The Fifth Year mentors, who support the
First Year students in helping them settle
into the school, helped organise the social
gathering, in preparing the refreshments
and guiding the visitors and First Year
students around the school. It was a great
event, well celebrated and we will look
forward to continuing to expand the
celebration of this in the years to come.

staff of Colaiste Chill Mhantain, came together to celebrate the occasion of their
graduation. A service was held in the school and it was a testament to the students work
and talents.
This was an opportunity to celebrate their past two years in Coláiste Chill Mhantáin, to
reflect on their personal memories of the school and to mark the end of their second level
education. It was a most memorable night for all involved.

Indoor Hurling
Our First Year indoor hurling team travelled to
Aughrim in February to participate in the Indoor
Hurling County Finals of the County Championship.
Our team played four matches and defeated three
teams; Coláiste Bhríde, Carnew, Presentation College,
Bray and Coláiste Craobh Abhainn. Unfortunately we
were narrowly defeated in the last match by the
overall winners, Avondale CC.
County Representatives
Congratulations to four of our Sixth Year students, Cian
Kelly, Aaron Nugent, Danny Staunton and Gavin Weir,
who were on the panel for the Wicklow Senior Hurling
team. This team defeated Kildare in Croke Park. It is a
major achievement and we wish them every success
in their future sporting endeavours.
Leinster Hurling Final
Colaiste Chill Mhantain sailed through the first round
blitz of the Leinster Championship played in Carlow
on Friday April 12th. They then faced Portlaoise
College in the first game and a strong first half ensured
the team had a significant win. The second game
against Tullow Community School proved to be a
much closer game. The team trailed at half time but a
strong second half performance saw Coláiste Chill
Mhantáin emerge victorious by a single point in an
exciting finale. The team then progressed to the
Leinster semi-final where they beat Pipers’ Hill, Naas.

On Wednesday May 1st the team played Enniscorthy
Vocational School in Arklow in the South Leinster
hurling final. In spite of a wonderful victory against
similar opposition at U - 16 level recently, it was not to
be on this occasion and the Wexford men captured the
title. Well done to the team who have had some
wonderful victories during their campaign.

Colaiste Chill Mhantain 5-9
Colaiste Bhride Carnew 3-20
Junior Soccer
On Tuesday 21st May in Arklow CCM faced Colaiste
Bhride in the Wicklow schools senior hurling final. CCM
came under pressure straight away but responded
well with a goal from Gavin Weir and points from
captain Daniel Staunton and Aaron Nugent, who put
on a superb display at midfield. However, Carnew
dominated the rest of the first half, and at the break
the lads found themselves with a huge mountain to
climb on a score of 2-10 to 1-2.
Hard luck to our Junior Soccer team who were
narrowly defeated by Dublin Oak Academy on
Wednesday January 16th. Coláiste Chill Mhantáin
conceded four goals at the beginning of the match but
fought valiantly to draw back the deficit.
Unfortunately at 4 – 3 as we pushed forward seeking
an equaliser we were caught on the break and
conceded a goal. The game finished 5 – 4 to Dublin
Oak Academy.
The second half saw a massive comeback from CCM
with excellent performances from Ryan Devlin and
Paul O’Brien, and great goals from Gavin, Danny and
Stephen Cruise, which took us to within four points of
Carnew at one stage. The half back line of Dean
O’Goman, Sean O’Callaghan, and Ronan Manley
battled well, while the full back line of Neil O’ Gorman,
James Manley, and James Mernagh also put in great
performances. Cormac Geraghty was superb in goal
and made several excellent saves. Ryan Devlin was
tremendously unlucky to see his fierce shot come back
off the crossbar while we had several more
agonisingly near misses on goal as well. We managed
to keep Carnew away from goal for most of the time,
but they added another 1-10 to their total during the
second half. Despite a heroic comeback the final two
goals, that we needed, just didn’t come.
However CCM did not come away empty handed as
captain Daniel Staunton accepted the senior “B” trophy
on behalf of the team. Carnew are Senior A winners
once again.
CCM also won South Leinster honours for 2012/2013
defeating St.David’s of Greystones, Colaiste Eoin of
Hacketstown, and Kilmuckridge in the final. Well done
to all the members of the panel.
International Cap
Well done to Andrew Murphy, a Fifth Year Student at
Coláiste Chill Mhantáin, who represented Ireland in
the U - 19 FAI Schools Team that played New Zealand
in an international friendly recently. We wish Andrew
every success in his future sporting endeavours.
FAI Leinster Trials
Congratulations to Chelsee Snell who attended the FAI
Leinster trials. Chelsee travelled to Dublin to fight for
a place on the squad who participate in the annual
Inter-Provincinial tournament. Unfortunately, Chelsee
did not make the final squad but was chosen as first
reserve in case of injury etc. However, Chelsee's fine
form and determination entitled her to a trial for the
Ireland squad.

Keogh and Cal Connolly were awarded the bronze.
The u-17's won their first group game against Colaiste
Craobh Abhainn 5-2. The boys lost 5-0 to a very strong
Kilian’s team in the next game, and unfortunately
missed out on qualification from the group as a result.
A determined team of Junior Girls represented the
school in the County B Gaelic blitz in March. A total of
seven schools took part, all fighting for the Title. The
CCM girls put on a great display throughout the day.
They worked extremely hard and displayed great
teamwork.
In the U - 15 boys category Jason O' Neill won silver for
the javelin while Ronan Pedreschi secured gold for the
800m sprint. Chelsee Snell was awarded bronze for
the U - 17 girls shot putt. In the U - 17 boys category
KK Beattie took silver for the shot putt event.

Football
Leinster Senior Football
Our Senior football team travelled to Rathangan, Co.
Kildare on Monday February 4th to contest the Leinster
semi – final. The match was marred by gale force
conditions which hampered any flowing football
which has been a feature of previous performances.
Despite their best efforts the Wicklow side were
defeated as a result of a late goal scored by the Kildare
side. The score line at the final whistle was Coláiste
Chill Mhantáin 0 – 11 Rathangan 1 – 11. This now left
the team to concentrate on the County Championship
for the remainder of the year.
Senior Girls Football Blitz
A twelve strong team travelled to Pearse Park in
Arklow to represent CCM in the Senior B Girls County
Gaelic Blitz. The girls played a total of 4 games. They
lost the first game by an incredible four goals.
However, the girls demonstrated great determination
by fighting back and beating a strong Dunlavin team
by one point.
The CCM team then faced an experienced Loreto Bray
team and held them to a one all draw. In the next
round the girls faced the unbeaten Blessington team.
In true CCM style the girls rallied together as a team
and held the favourites to a draw. As a result the
senior girls secured third place (out of 6) with one
point difference keeping them out of the final.

The girls were captained by Chelsee Snell who proved
to be an excellent leader and top scorer with 2 goals
and 1 point. A special mention to Michaela Dunne who
pulled off some excellent saves and performance in
goals. Unfortunately, the girls did not progress out of
the group stages.
The team included: Chelsee Snell, Michaela Dunne,
Chloe Butler, Josephine Clarke, Hannah Cox, Kelsea
Parsons, Nicole Cronin, Ellen Doyle, Amelia Kavanagh,
Anna Marie Cruise, Nicole Nolan and Gabriela
Lewkowicz.
Finally the relay team consisting of Tommy Dunne,
Nathan Fagan, Jordan Petticrew, KK Beattie were
rewarded with the bronze medal for the 100m relay
race. A special congratulations to Jason O’ Neill who
recorded the third longest throw out of any age group
in the javelin at the meeting.
Badminton
U – 19 Badminton
Athletics
At the beginning of April students from First, Second,
Third and Fifth Year travelled to Greystones to
participate in the County Athletics meeting. The
competition was attended by many schools from
around County Wicklow and a thoroughly memorable
day was had by all.
Students from Coláiste Chill Mhantáin took part in
many track events such as the 800metres, 100metres
sprint and relay. The students displayed a great sense
of agility and stamina in the competitions and faced
tough opposition from more experienced athletes.
Congratulations to John Moorehouse who received a
bronze medal in the U-14 boys for the 100m sprint and
gold for the shot putt. Robert Keogh was awarded a
gold medal for the long jump and Danny Keogh
received bronze for the shot putt. The relay team
consisting of John Moorehouse, Gary Hughes, Danny
Coláiste Chill Mhantáin welcomed a number of teams
to the school on January 14th as we hosted an U-19
blitz. Separate boys and girls competitions were run
throughout the day. Participating in the boys blitz
were Coláiste Chill Mhantáin, St. Kevin’s, Dunlavin and
East Glendalough School. While the girls section saw
Dominican Convent Wicklow, Loreto Bray and East
Glendalough School compete against each other.
The boy’s competition was held in the morning and
proved to be a tight contest throughout between
Coláiste Chill Mhantáin Team A and East Glendalough
School with it all to play for in the final doubles’ match.
It ended all square in the competition with both teams
winning thirteen matches each topping the table
ahead of St Kevin’s, Dunlavin and Coláiste Chill
Mhantáin Team B. And so, much like a boxing match it
came down to a count back, with Coláiste Chill
Mhantáin Team A winning on the overall points
scored. The CCM team comprised of Enda Dempsey,
David Stapleton, Seán O'Callaghan and Daniel
Montgomery.
The girls also had a great competition with very
competitive games throughout. This competition
again was all up for grabs going into the final round of
games after some wonderful displays of power and
skill. In the end the Dominican Convent Wicklow
prevailed and were crowned worthy champions after
a tough challenge.

The Parents’ Council
The Parents’ Council (PC) was formed when the school
opened in October 2012. A copy of our Constitution
which facilitates our smooth running of the PC and its
Meetings can be found on the school website. On 9th
October 2012 the first AGM of the Parents’ Association
took place. Declan Marnane, the incoming Chairman of
the PC, steered the meeting to a successful conclusion and
many new members joined.
The PC Executive consists of the Chairman, Vice Chairmen,
Secretary, Treasurer and PRO. These are duly elected at the following PC Meeting and serve for a limited
period as per the Constitution. We meet two to three times a term.
At the invitation of the Principal/Board of Management we have been involved in drawing up an on-going
review of relevant school policies which can be viewed on the School Website.
To better help us reach you, the parent body of our School, we established a Facebook page (Coláiste Chill
Mhantáin Parents' Association). We use this as an Electronic Notice Board enabling parents to keep
informed of up-coming PA events, reminders and notifications. For people who do not use Facebook we
have a similar facility set up with Google+ and you can join our circle. These are tools essentially for
information sharing, not for correspondence. Should you need to contact us we are reached via email on
[email protected].
Each year we facilitate the CAD (Community Awareness of Drugs) Course to help families update
information on drugs/effects, explore attitudes/beliefs and develop a family-orientated drug prevention
strategy. The next course is running in Oct/Nov 2013.
This year we held two Fundraising Events; a Bag Pack in SuperValu and a Lions’ Club Table Quiz. Funds
raised have been put towards he purchasing of Awards’ Trophies, Social Seating, Graduation Gifts, etc. We
