PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
Circulating Files are collections of verbatim quotes of what Edgar Cayce said during his readings
on a given subject or, in some cases everything. We have medical circulating files which focus on
the over 9,000 health-related readings with subjects from Acidity-Alkalinity to Weight Loss. We
also have non-medical circulating files on a broad range of topics, for example Egypt: Sphinx,
Pyramids, and Hall of Records, Fear and Its Far-Reaching Effects, Advice to Parents, Serving in
Accord with Ideals, and Business Advice.
Each circulating file is simply a collection of reading quotes or full readings given for different
individuals on a similar subject or disease. The A.R.E. cannot and does not suggest treatments
for physical ailments nor make claims about the effectiveness of the therapies. We encourage
anyone working with the health readings to do so under a doctor's care and advice.
The circulating files support the research aspect of the Cayce work. We appreciate any feedback
informing us of progress made in improving one’s life or achieving good health by applying
suggestions given in the readings. Please send any feedback (testimonies, experiences, results,
etc.) to:

PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
Introduction to the Cayce Readings on
Health and Healing
No matter what illness or ailment concerns us, certain basic principles about
health and healing are relevant. These are the premises upon which all of the Cayce
health information rests. For those who would like to make a more careful study of
these basic principles, the recommended Circulating File is entitled Principles of
Healing. Here, in essence, are the ideas found in that file. They may prove to be very
useful to your study of the specific ailment that requires healing for you.
The first fundamental idea about healing requires that we maintain a creative
balance between two principles:
1. All healing comes from the infinite - that is, from attunement and harmony
with our spiritual source. The infinite is just as accessible and available in the
visible, physical world as it is in the invisible realm.
2. At the same time, each person must take responsibility for his or her own
healing process. No one can simply sit back and wait passively for healing to
occur.
This second principle - the need for self-responsibility - can take many forms.
For example, healing requires attunement, and no one knows better than ourselves
exactly what has gotten us out of attunement. Often, if we look closely at our lives,
we can see (without needing a gifted medical clairvoyant such as Edgar Cayce)
what's causing our illness.
To illustrate self-responsibility further, the human body has a marvelous,
innate drive to heal itself, but we've got to do our part to help. A broken bone will
naturally try to mend; however, the fracture needs to be set properly for the healing
to be complete and effective. Cayce stresses the healing ability of the body:
Remember, the body does gradually renew itself constantly. Do not look upon
the conditions which have existed as not being able to be eradicated from the
system. . . Hold to that KNOWLEDGE - and don't think of it as just theory that the body CAN, the body DOES renew itself!
1548-3
Another important principle relates to energy medicine, a new field for which
Edgar Cayce was a pioneer. His readings consistently speak of the roles played by
vibrations or vibratory forces - right down to the level of individual atoms. According
to Cayce, there is a type of consciousness that exists in each atom. Although most
of the passages about the atomic physics of healing seem rather esoteric, it might be
easier to follow the analogy of the attunement of a stringed musical instrument. A
violin or piano that is out of tune makes sour, discordant music - symbolic of disease
or illness. Just as a skilled musician can bring the instrument back into attunement,
we experience healing when our vibrations - right down to the atomic level - are
adjusted in a correct manner. In essence, all healing is bringing the vibrations into
harmony from within.
Balance among body, mind, and spirit is another key to Cayce's philosophy of
healing. For healing to be complete and lasting, we must recognize and meet the
needs of each of these three levels. Virtually no illness or disease can be treated
successfully at only one of these three levels.

PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
What's more, Cayce affirms that the human body will naturally stay healthy and even rejuvenate itself - if a kind of internal balance can be maintained. “Dis-ease”
starts when one part of the body draws energy from another part. One portion of an
organism may become overcharged with the creative life force, while another portion
becomes undernourished. The result is a gradual disintegration of the body and the
onset of illness.
The opposite of this sort of disintegration is rejuvenation. The readings assert
that we are continuously rebuilding our bodies. Within any seven-year period, each
cell is replaced. If we'll allow it, our bodies will transform any problem and resuscitate
any condition. But our ingrained habits usually block this healing potential - the
habits of action and, even more potent, the habits of mind.
What role do drugs and medicine play in the healing process? Cayce's
philosophy clearly sees a place for them, but warns of misunderstanding how they
work and of expecting more of them than is possible. Any healing method attempts
to create an experience of oneness, in hopes of then stimulating a similar response
in the body. For some people in some situations, a drug may be the best way to
accomplish this - just as in other cases surgery may be the best way to stimulate
healing. Medicines can be a practical application of the one life force. Occasionally
they must be very potent in their reactions in order to get the patient through an
acute illness. But Cayce from time to time encouraged people to consider the herbal
formulas he recommended to be tonics and stimulants, rather than medicines.
The dangerous side of medicines is their potential to diminish the body's own
healing work. This is what Cayce alluded to when he warned about “palliatives” that
deceive the soul with half-truths and temporary relief. It's also what he meant when
he warned that we shouldn't come to rely on any condition outside of ourselves that
could be assimilated by the body inwardly. All of this is to say, take the medications
prescribed by the physician you trust. Keep in mind this thought: what those
chemicals can do is temporarily - and somewhat artificially - give your body an
experience of greater oneness.
Healing that really takes hold and lasts must come from changing one's inner
consciousness and vibration. That happens most effectively from consistent and
persistent human effort (that is, engaging one's desires, purposes, and will) something that pills all too easily allow us to skip.
These have been long-standing. Do not take the treatments just a few days,
or even a few weeks, and expect to be well - and then revert to old
conditions. But be consistent and persistent! Have periods when these will be
taken (that is, ALL of those things indicated) for two, three to four weeks.
Then rest by leaving them off a week. And then be just as patient and just as
persistent as though you were beginning all over again.
976-1
Cayce's healing philosophy includes other insights that can help us avoid
misunderstanding. For example, one principle states that the best treatment
procedures sometimes cause a temporary worsening of conditions. If we didn't
recognize this possibility, we might give up just before the benefits begin to appear.
A closely related principle states that when a body is re-establishing its attunement,
it tends to be more sensitive. Again, if we misunderstand that heightened sensitivity,
we might not see the good that is slowly being effected.

PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
The mind is a focus of other healing principles. The unconscious mind plays a
role in many illnesses and diseases. One example of this is the karmic factor in
health problems. Memories from previous incarnations, stored in the soul mind, can
trigger problems in the body. Of course, we shouldn't go so far as to suppose that
every health challenge has past-life roots; nevertheless, the perspective of
reincarnation can help us understand what we could possibly be dealing with as we
seek healing.
The familiar Cayce axiom, “Mind is the builder,” leads us to wonder exactly
which attitudes and emotions best foster healing. The readings emphasize several:
 Self-acceptance. As we rid ourselves of self-condemnation, we make room
for healing forces to enter.
 Optimism and hope. We're encouraged to expect healing.
 Patience. It's much easier and quicker to destroy health than it is to rebuild it.
We need to be willing to patiently invest whatever time is required.
Alongside these specific attitudes and emotions, we're invited to use the
creative potential of visualization to stimulate our own healing. The mind's imagemaking capacity can be directed in such a way that we “see” the healing
transformation taking place. This is not something that's accomplished in a single
visualization session. Like all the Cayce health-promoting approaches, it requires
persistence and works best in conjunction with other healing methods.
Perhaps the most important principle of the mind's relationship to healing
concerns purposefulness. A person can experience temporarily an outer healing that is, in the physical body only - yet still be spiritually sick. What cures the soul? A
commitment to a purposeful life. Not just any purpose, but instead one that reflects
care for other people.
On occasion a reading from Cayce would pose this question to the person
who was ill: What would you do with your life if you were healed?
What would the body be healed for? That it might gratify its own physical
appetites? That it might add to its own selfishness? Then (if so) it had better
remain as it is. . . But first the change of heart, the change of mind, the
change of purpose, the change of intent.
3124-2
The position of Cayce's psychic source was simply this: Why correct the
physical condition unless there's also going to be an inner correction? People who
are looking for both inner and outer healing are the best candidates for restored
health and vitality. In Cayce's philosophy, healing should equip us to be more useful
to others.
With this ideal of service in mind, we might also wonder just how we can be
channels of healing to others. What principles govern our efforts to be healers to
those for whom we have concern? One principle is based on the spiritual
connections that exist between all people. It states that as we bring the experience
of oneness into our own consciousness, it can profoundly help someone else
experience oneness, attunement, and healing. Cayce's way of putting it was,
“...raising the Christ Consciousness in self to such an extent as it may flow out of self
to him thou would direct it to.” (281-7)
For this to be most effective, the recipient must desire such help and have
requested healing prayer. Of course, we can always pray for someone, even if that

7
PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
individual hasn't asked us. But it's important that we not assume we know what's
needed in any person's life. For one who hasn't specifically asked for prayer, we can
simply offer prayers of protection and blessing, rather than try to direct healing
energies to that person or for a specific condition.
It is also important to remember that each reading was given for an individual.
It must be emphasized that no suggested treatments for any particular ailments
should be “lifted” from any individual reading and tried by another individual except
under the supervision of and with the cooperation of a physician or licensed health
care professional. However, there were many suggestions that were given over and
over, and these can be studied to find how they apply to ourselves. These healing
principles can be grouped in four categories that referred to as CARE.
Circulation – moving the blood around the body through therapies such as
massage or spinal manipulation
Assimilation – encouraging the body to pull the proper nutrients from the food by
eating the proper foods and in the proper combinations
Relaxation – taking time to rest and let the body recuperate and counterbalance the
daily activities
Elimination – removing the waste products from the body through therapies such as
sweats, colonics, and fume baths
For more information about CARE and recommendations on the lifestyle
described in the readings, please see Dr. Harold J. Reilly’s Handbook for Health.
There are also many verbatim collections of the readings in other Circulating Files,
Research Bulletins, and Treatment Plans for individual diseases which may be

The A.R.E. is interested in having all the material in the health readings
reviewed by physicians and health care professionals who also provide summaries
of their findings in the hope that the information may prove beneficial to others.
When time and finances permit it is planned to have all the information in the health
readings read by one or more physicians and the subject matter summarized.

In summary, the Cayce readings remind us that our natural state is
wholeness and health. An innate wisdom within ourselves knows what's needed for
healing. We should expect to get well, and we should be willing to do our part to
make it possible. “Those that expect little of the Lord receive little; those that expect
much receive much - if they live it!” 1424-1

PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
Fears, Compulsions and Anxieties
by Dr. Thomas L. Garrett, Consulting Psychologist:
Health Culture article, 8/38
"Hypnotic suggestion is the means by which such displacements are
effected. The destructive thought, deeply rooted in the subconscious,
makes the individual neurotic. The constructive thought, conveyed to
the subconscious area by the hypnotist, disburdens the mind of this
thought and takes its place as a component of the individual's personality."
By Dr. Thomas L. Garrett
In last month's article I told the story of Phineas Quimby, the noted
Portland healer who diagnosed human ailments through clairvoyant hypnosis.
As I explained therein, Quimby threw his assistant in to a hypnotic trance and
asked him what ailed this or that patient. The assistant, a farmhand who lacked
even an elementary school education, astounded newspaper reporters and other
callers at the Quimby clinic by describing each ailment in the language employed
by the members of the medical profession.
There Always Are Skeptics
It goes without saying, of course, that there are a number of persons who
feel that the Quimby story should be taken with a grain of salt. We shall always
have in our midst those who laugh at or condemn that which they do not
understand. As Elbert Hubbard once said, "If a man is not up on a thing, he is
usually down on it."
And we always have with us those who, while admitting that a thing might
have happened in the past, will argue that it could not happen again and that the
man who made it possible was endowed with a "freak" power that will never
devolve upon any other human in all the centuries to come. This, is fact, is the
way that many persons feel about Quimby.
Clairvoyant Hypnosis
What they do not know is that hundreds of hypnotists have been effecting
similar results for many years. Quimby was given considerable publicity because
he was a pioneer in this field and also because he was the healer of Mary Baker
Eddy, who later founded Christian Science. These other practitioners go along
from day to day diagnosing through clairvoyant hypnosis and performing other
remarkable results without ever getting a line of publicity.
Now and then, however, a result is accomplished by this or that hypnotist
which becomes first-page news, as happened a few weeks ago when the
delivery of a baby was made painless through the use of hypnosis.
The Work of Edgar Cayce
A remarkable man who shuns publicity, but whose results should be
recorded on a sheet of deathless bronze, is Edgar Cayce, of Virginia Beach,
Virginia. For more than a quarter of a century, Mr. Cayce has been diagnosing
human ailments by throwing himself into a hypnotic trance. He is, of course, an
adept at the art of self-hypnosis.
Edgar Cayce Readings copyright 1971, 1993-2012 by the Edgar Cayce Foundation
9
PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
Moreover, his ability is even more amazing than that of the great Quimby,
the Portland healer, worker through the subconscious mind of his hypnotized
assistant, diagnosed the ailments of those who visited his clinic. Mr. Cayce does
his diagnosing at a distance, "seeing" with the "eyes" of his subconscious mind,
the internal organs of persons who live hundreds or even thousands of miles away.
Learned physicians who have investigated Mr. Cayce's method of
diagnosing assert that he is the most remarkable human that they have ever met.
Most of them cannot account for this strange faculty, but all of them, after a
series of tests, agree that his findings are dependable.
In some instances, Mr. Cayce's diagnoses indicate organic deficiencies.
In others, the trouble has a psychic origin. In other words, there are cases where
his subconscious mind, "seeing without eyes", detects disorders which can be
eliminated only by contacting the subconscious mind of the patient in question
and displacing negative, destructive ideas which are positive and constructive.
It is an axiom of the physical realm that no two bodies can occupy the
same space at the same time. When extended to the world of the unseen, this
axiom requires no revision. No two thoughts can occupy the same space at the
same time. And just as it is possible to displace one body with another body in
the realm of physical things, it is possible to displace one thought with another
thought in the realm of subconsciousness.
The Harm From Negative Thinking
Hypnotic suggestion is the means by which such displacements are
effected. The destructive thought, deeply rooted in the subconscious, makes the
individual neurotic. The constructive thought, conveyed to the subconscious
area by the hypnotist, disburdens the mind of this thought and takes its place as
a component of the individual's personality.
The abnormal conditions which are produced by undesirable thoughts are
categorized as phobias, compulsions and anxiety neuroses. The phobia, which
is an unreasonable fear, hampers the individual by making it impossible for him
to perform certain acts or by making him apprehensive when he faces certain
situations. The compulsion, which is an irresistible urge to do a certain thing,
makes him a helpless robot whose behavior is akin to that of a inmate of bedlam.
An anxiety neurosis causes a deep, irrational concern about things which normal
persons either ignore completely or accept as trivialities.
Phobias
Claustrophobia, which is quite prevalent, is the name given to the
unreasonable fear of enclosed spaces. In many instances it is traceable to a
childhood experience in which the patient in question was locked in a clothes
closet for breaking some rule laid down by a stern parent. However, it has
numerous other causes. In a case which came to my attention a few weeks ago
the victim had once been cornered in a woodshed in a battle with a mad dog. In
another case the patient was an ex-miner who had once been trapped in a shaft
in a mine disaster. And only yesterday I heard of a case where the patient's
claustrophobia was traceable to his witnessing the exhumation of the body of a
man who had been buried alive.
Edgar Cayce Readings copyright 1971, 1993-2012 by the Edgar Cayce Foundation
10
PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
Hydrophobia is the psychological term used to describe the unreasonable
fear of water, and thanataphobia is the name for the unreasonable fear of death.
Brontephobia is the dread of lightning, agoraphobia is the fear of open spaces,
and hypsophobia is the dread of heights.
The other phobias to which the mind of man is heir are all too numerous to
mention. Suffice it to say, for the purposes of this brief study, that there are
phobiacs who fear cats, phobiacs who fear smoke, and phobiacs who fear
hypnosis.
Compulsions
Any attempt to list the various compulsions which torture mankind would
prove abortive. One man suffers an irresistible urge to kick cats, another just has
to take a bath every hour, and still another finds it impossible to pass a fire alarm
box without turning in an alarm. We could categorize these urges and many
more, but our files would never be complete; year after year practicing
psychologists learn about compulsions which have never been catalogued. As
for anxiety neuroses, they are positively indefinable and baffling. The chief
trouble, of course, is that the patient burdened with feelings of anxiety does not
know what he is anxious about. The agoraphobe fears open spaces, and the
victim of a compulsion suffers an irresistible urge to do a certain thing; but the
victim of an anxiety neurosis is afraid of something which he himself cannot
name. Hence, the psychologist who attempts to disburden such patient of his
feelings of anxiety finds himself in a position similar to that of a conchologist who
is seeking a certain shell of which he has never been given a description.
Psychiatry VS. Hypnosis
The only thing that makes the psychologist's task easier than that of the
conchologist referred to is the employment of hypnosis. If he were to
psychoanalyze the patient he would have to ferret out the exact reason for the
feeling of anxiety. In using hypnosis, however, all he has to do is to supplant
such feelings with thoughts of confidence and composure.
As for phobias and compulsions, they too, can be scotched by hypnosis
without any probing of the subconscious. Analysis can effect a catharsis in a
phobiac only if the analyst can discover the origin of the fear, and it can relieve
one of a compulsion only if the analyst can learn the origin of the urge in
question. Hypnotic suggestion, however, like the immortal six hundred, asks not
the reason why nor awaits a reply. It eliminates a phobia by simply displacing it
with the positive thought that there is nothing to fear, and it disburdens a patient
of a compulsion by assuring his subconsciousness that he is free of the
tantalizing urge.
In my next article, entitled "Hypnosis in Practice," I shall present the
records of several actual cases in which hypnotists relieved patients of phobias,
compulsions and feelings of anxiety.

Research at Esalen on the Internet
The Esalen Center for Theory and Research, located in Big Sur, California,
has a large Web site www.esalenctr.org) that provides information on its various
research interests. The center sponsors special topical conferences, by invitation
only, and archives summaries of these presentations online.
On the topic of survival research, for example, you can read about the
research of University of Virginia psychiatrist Jim Tucker, who has found that the
mothers of children who recall past lives often have dreams that alert them to the
child’s past-life memories. He has also found a significant relationship between
current-life phobias and past-life memories.

One that loves, through some innate feeling or desire, to be near waters yet is ever fearful of the destructive forces in same, and thence has an innate
fear of water.
5397-1, F 68, 8/21/44
(Q) How may I get rid of fear of closed places?
(A) The attitude must be kept as to that of helpfulness in the spiritual
forces of the body - within and without.
2772-4, M 37, 2/8/43
(Q) Why do I fear water so that I do not swim far in water over my depth?
(A) This is from a condition that existed in the subconscious in very young
childhood. Suggestions to self, or forcing of self to overcome such, might
discharge this from the subconscious influence.
(Q) Is this why I am afraid to dive or jump into the water even if I am only one
foot above the water?
(A) The same.
3057-1, F 15, 6/24/43
(Q) Why does she have such a fear of falling?
(A) This is part of its karma - for it made many others fall far!
279-1, M 31, 5/20/31
(Q) Will the Forces please explain my phobias regarding the color and texture
of my lips, tongue and mouth, and the cause of the occasional twitchings of the
lips, mouth and tongue?
(A) As has been given. This is an improper coordination in the circulation, as
related to the INTERNAL circulation and the CAPILLARY circulation. Hence
that's why those added forces of the sweats, with the thorough rubs - salt,
alcohol, oil and such, should be given, for the stimulation TO the circulation and
to make proper coordination in nerve ends, which will bring color - when there is
added the blood supply, which IS being builded, yet - as has been outlined for
the diet, for the exercises, for the eliminations - these additions will hasten and
make for bettered conditions with the body.

Now, in the mental forces - and as related to fear in the system: Fear the

free will, and MAKING the will one with that which will enable the body mental to
see, experience, to know, to feel, that nearer and nearer the will of the body
made one with that the body worships - and let that worshipfulness be of OTHER
than of self; for MANY a body stumbles and blinds self by putting self first and
foremost.
The mental developments should be in the direction of the directing play,
writing play, writing book, writing song - for THESE may give an OUTLET of self
to MANIFEST that which the body, the mental BEING, may hold as ideal. FIND
an ideal!

BACKGROUND OF READING 565-1 F ADULT
B1. 5/30/34 Sister, Mrs. [913], came with others to be present for the reading,
which she had requested previously for her sister, Mrs. [965]. However, she
never at any time indicated the nature of her sister's illness.
TEXT OF READING 565-1 F ADULT
This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent,
Virginia Beach, Virginia, this 30th day of May, 1934.
(Physical Suggestion)
1. EC: Yes, we have the body here, [565].
2. Now, as we find, while there are many conditions physical with this body that
are very good, there are those conditions that with the correction would make a
much better body physically and mentally for the activities in the mental, spiritual
and material body.
3. The disturbances, as we find, have to do with some minor conditions
respecting functionings of organs, and little or no organic disorder. While many
portions of the system are involved at one time or another, the conditions are
such that they may be easily corrected in the present.
4. These, then, are conditions as we find them with this body, [565]:
5. First, in the BLOOD SUPPLY, here we find the form of an anemia, or the lack
of a proper balance in the numbers of the red blood cells and the white blood
cells. This condition, while of an active nature, CHANGES at times; for we may
find at times there would be almost sufficient in numbers of the red and quite a
deficiency in the white, while again we may find an alteration in just the opposite
direction. This arises from nervous conditions that disturb the circulation, and the
assimilation of that taken as food values for the body. The nerve disturbance
arises, as we shall see, from two - yea, three - distinct causes, making a
combination of disorders contributory - as will be seen - one to another. Hence
there is not only the variation in the red and white blood supply, or the form of
anemia, but the character of the disturbance in other portions of the body, as we
shall see.
6. As to the characterization of the blood itself; that is, the hemoglobin, the urea,
the activity in its coagulation and in the blood count; this varies, not so much as
to cause what may be termed an unbalanced metabolism but the very character
of the nervous condition makes low blood pressure and at times disturbances to
the heart's activity and its pulsation. Dizziness arises at times from distinct
causes, during the periods of the menstrual activity in elimination and during the
periods when there is overexhaustion by excitement to the nerve forces of the
body, or at other times we may find it arising purely from gases that form from
nervous indigestion. These changes and alterations in the pressure cause
changes in the character of the blood itself, though the body may not be said to
have a blood disturbance - but the functioning of the organs themselves and their
activity upon the system through the nerve supply makes the disturbance, though
the character of the blood so far as carrying poisons or any character of bacilli in
same is lacking; for it is very good in these directions.

PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
7. In the NERVE FORCES of the body we find much that is a cause, and much
that is an effect. So, it is not altogether nerves; though the body is nervous
naturally from those conditions that have existed and do exist in the body, but
under stress or strain no one would call the body, [565], a nervous person; for
she would be very quiet and very determined and very set in what she would do,
and she would do it! [Sister [913] said "True!".]
8. In the cerebro-spinal system we find there has been a relaxation in the 3rd and
4th dorsal area that has tended to make for a relaxing in the POSITION of the
stomach itself, or the organs or the nerve tendons and muscular forces through
the hypogastric and pneumogastric plexus, as to allow the stomach itself to tilt to
the lower side, or the pyloric end up and the hypogastric or the cardiac and lower
than normal, you see. This makes for a tendency of easy fermentation in same,
and is a natural strain on the nerve system. The muscular reactions cause the
condition, but the effect is in the nerve system; and as those plexus in the upper
dorsal are in close connection or association with the sympathetic and sensory
nerve reactions through the ganglia near the 1st, 2nd and 3rd dorsal area, this
makes for a slowing of the circulation to the head, you see, sympathetically.
Hence organs of the sensory system SYMPATHETICALLY become involved, as
at times there is the tendency for a quick drying of the throat - and the body feels
like it would spit cotton often! At other times we have a thumping or drumming in
the ear. At others there are the tendencies for the conditions to produce
irritations and burnings in the eyes, especially if there has been an eyestrain
either by being in the wind, poor light or strong light; any of these will produce an
irritation through the necessary energies used and the lack of supply of nerve
energy from the depletion in the area as indicated.
9. From this sympathetic condition, both as to the nerve supplies to the organs of
digestion and as to the activities in the eliminations of the body during the periods
that should be natural or normal, the reactions also produce an irritation again
which causes the secretions from the vagina in such measures or manners as to
make irritations so that the body is irritable in manner; and until the flow has
begun there are pains produced in top of head, dizziness, lack of appetite, and
an excess activity of the kidneys or bladder. These are purely reflex and are
sympathetic conditions, as we have indicated, from a subluxation in the 3rd and
4th dorsal plexus area.
10. As to the activities of the ORGANS themselves:
11. In the brain forces the reactions and activities are near normal.
12. The organs of the sensory system, as indicated, are disturbed through reflex
conditions arising from the upper dorsal and reflexly through the cervical area.
13. Lungs, bronchi, larynx, only at periods when there are irritations to the
hypogastric area is there any disorder of a nature not normal, but this will be
corrected when the corrections are made throughout the system.
14. The digestive system, as indicated, shows disturbances; not only as to
position of the stomach itself but as related to the digestive activities and reflexly
to the heart's activity through poor circulation impoverished by the inactivity of
that assimilated being properly directed in the system, and sympathetically also
for the organs of the pelvis in their activity.

19
PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
15. The liver, spleen, pancreas, as we find, would function near normal when
there is a normalcy from the position or the activities of the body. When there
are those changes that may be brought about by the addition of those properties
necessary for creating a balance in the system, these will make for proper activity
throughout the body.
16. Then, in making the corrections for this body, [565], we are speaking of:
17. First we would begin with making the proper adjustments osteopathically,
especially - or specifically - in the upper dorsal area, COORDINATING the rest of
the ganglia and the activity of the organs with same as these corrections are
made. As we find, this would not require more than sixteen such adjustments
and treatments.
18. Begin immediately, when the body rests, with having the feet very much
higher than the head; and after such a rest there should be the holding of the
stomach better in position by the use of bandage or belt about the body. Not so
tight as to cause discomfort, but as the manipulations and adjustments are made
let these be of SUFFICIENT activity as to HOLD the position of the stomach, that
the activities through same may be kept in their proper relationship with the rest
of the system.
19. For those disturbances that have been produced by the nerve reaction to the
other organs of the system, so as to make that incentive for the corrections being
made to coordinate with the activities of the glands and functioning of the organs,
we would take a compound put together in this manner; adding the ingredients in
the order named:
20. To 16 ounces of distilled water, we would add; stirring in; beating fine or
powdering each ingredient:
Dried Wild Ginseng Root (rolled together or beat very fine)..........1 ounce,
Indian Turnip......................1/2 dram,
Wild Ginger (now this isn't Wild Ginseng, but Ginger - which is a different
root entirely).....1 dram.
Boil slowly until it will amount to, when strained, 12 ounces. Then add to the
solution 2 ounces pure grain alcohol and 1 ounce Syrup or Essence of Wild
Cherry. See? The dose would be 1/2 teaspoonful twice each day, morning on
arising before the meal and when ready to retire. And continue taking until the
whole quantity has been taken, you see.
21. Keep the manipulations about twice each week, making corrections
specifically in the upper dorsal area and the GENERAL conditions throughout the
body made to coordinate with same.
22. This would be an outline for the diet, though it may be altered as the seasons
change, you see:
23. Mornings - citrus fruit or dry cereals with fruit or berries and milk, but do not
use the citrus fruits and the cereals at the same meal, or quantities of milk with
the citrus fruit. Very crisp bacon with browned bread, coddled egg or the like may
be taken at the same meal. These may be altered at times to fresh fruits or
stewed fruits, stewed rhubarb or the like, which are well but change them from
time to time.

PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
24. Noons - either a liquid diet or a green fresh-vegetable diet; such as juices of
vegetables, juices of meats, but do not combine the green vegetables and the
soups - or the liquid diet WITH the green or fresh vegetables. Include all the
vegetables that may be eaten in a salad. And if there is to be taken any pastry,
pie, cake, cream or the like, eat it at the noon meal - not in the evening or
morning meals.
25. Evenings - preferably well-cooked vegetables, with at least one period each
day (either morning or evening - and well that it be altered) of beef JUICES; not
the meats but the beef juices made fresh every few days, not large quantities, but
that we may change the activities in the system as to the correction in the blood
supply. The meats should be rather those of fowl, liver, tripe, pigs' feet, or the
like. Any of these should be included as to meats, but the greater portion should
be of vegetables - with meats such as these taken at least three times each
week.
26. Do these and, as we find, in thirty-six to forty days we will have a body quite a
bit changed and near normal.
27. Ready for questions.
28. (Q) What causes pains and weakness around heart?
(A) As indicated, the straining on the system, the tendency of the dropping or
falling of the stomach itself, and the gases that form which make pressures
through the alimentary canal and in the stomach itself, you see. Reflex; not an
organic condition.
29. (Q) Do I have astigmatism?
(A) More in one eye than in the other. Everyone has it in some form or
another. This will be much corrected, or very much changed, with the correction
in the upper dorsal as indicated, and through the cervical region.
30. (Q) Are the pills I am taking harmful?
(A) They ARE!
31. (Q) Can she get the proper osteopathic treatments in Raleigh; if so, whom
would you suggest to give them?
(A) Chambers or Carlson, [Carson] one or the other.
32. (Q) Would a belt manufactured for the purpose of holding the stomach in
position be suitable?
(A) As we find, this may be best fitted or adjusted - but a belt may be made
by using the heavy cloth that is of the nature that would hold the stomach in
better position, you see, and much easier, and not cost so much either!
33. (Q) In what minerals am I deficient, and how may they be supplied?
(A) Not so much deficient in minerals as in the blood supply - as we have
indicated - being deficient in the ability of the system, in its present conditions
and nervous state, to ASSIMILATE that taken. With the corrections
osteopathically, and following the diet outlined or in that direction, we will supply
the proper minerals.
34. (Q) To what colors do I vibrate?
(A) Shades of red.

35. (Q) Please give mental and spiritual advice.
(A) When individuals have been under such nerve strain that has existed with
this body for some time, spiritual advice is often rather aggravating than
satisfying; though at times the body has sought such in its activities. With a
change in the physical conditions, the outlook of the mental body will be entirely
different.
Each soul should gain this as its basis for activity:
The MENTAL IS the builder. Hence the mental attitude has much to do with
the physical conditions of the body, but it does not set broken bones; neither
does it strengthen ligaments that have been stretched through activities that have
gradually drawn in a body.
But the attitude of mind, if it is from the spiritual forces and desires, will bring
that which will build a life and an experience of peace, harmony and happiness.
Follow that. We are through for the present.
[5/30/34 Following above rdg. the sister, Mrs. [913], said that it was a perfect
description of her sister's condition. She said Mrs. [565]'s husband was a
druggist, so he could prepare the compound for her. "I agree with the lady who
said to me yesterday that Edgar Cayce is the greatest man in the world." Mrs.
Ellington said Dr. M. L. Richardson said he doesn't know how EC gets it, but he
does get it. She reported that Dr. Carl S. Frischkorn, N.D., recently highly
recommended EC.]
REPORTS OF READING 565-1 F ADULT
R1. 6/18/34 Friend of Mrs. [913] reported that Mrs. [913] on a recent visit found
that Mrs. [565] was physically unable to visit a hospital or go near a doctor,
having such a great dread and fear of both, but when she rec'd her rdg. she got
up enough courage to go to see a doctor as recommended, and after each visit it
was easier next time.
Dr. A. R. Tucker refused to follow the reading until he had made an x-ray.
Mrs. [565] finally consented. The x-ray verified the reading in every detail. Dr.
Tucker was astounded. He agreed to follow the suggestions and to not charge
for the x-ray. He said he didn't know how Edgar Cayce knew this, but it was true.
Mrs. [565] said she would not take five million dollars for the rdg., poor as she
was. Relatives and friends are elated over the outcome of this rdg. She is taking
treatments regularly and improving under them.
Mrs. [913], sister of Mrs. [565], became worried when it was learned that one
of the doctors recommended in the reading was dead [Dr. Carson]. Some
members of Group #3 were also worried, but it was pointed out that "the forces"
recognize no time or space. The mere fact that a doctor who had been in that
town was named was truly remarkable.
R2. 8/17/34 Mrs. [565]'s sister reported: Great improvement; nerves better.
"Doctor showed me pictures of x-rays of her stomach - it was under her heart and
pressed against this organ. She thought she had heart trouble. Intestine four

inches lower than it should have been. It is thought that an operation sometime
before might have caused the condition.
"She eats better and shows splendid appetite. Bowels wonderful. For 18 yrs.
she had not had a movement without medicine. She says she wants to come to
Va. Beach to hear her next rdg."
R3. 11/7/34 Miss Mildred Davis wrote Dr. A. R. Tucker requesting a report on
Mrs. [565]. 11/8/34 See his reply below, Par. R6.
R4. 11/24/34 Mrs. [565]'s letter: "For the past 8-9 yrs. I have been in extremely
bad health, having been to the most prominent doctors in Raleigh. I have been
to the hospital and undergone five operations at one time. Instead of getting
relief I was gradually growing worse. No one was able to diagnose my case
successfully. And 5 yrs. ago I had a complete nervous breakdown at the time of
my father's death. During this period I was unable to attend the funeral of either
my father or mother. Unable to do any shopping or be in a crowd or even in the
presence of a small group of people without going completely to pieces.
"Having heard of your work and after it was suggested, during a visit to
Norfolk, I was most anxious for a Physical Rdg., which was obtained through you
after I ret'd to my home in ..., N.C. When the rdg. was rec'd I was determined to
carry it out to the letter if possible. I went to the Tucker- Carson Sanitarium in
Raleigh, and the rdg. was turned over to Dr. Tucker. I asked him if he would
treat me as suggested in the rdg. After reading it he said he would not treat me
as suggested, and would give me no treatment at all until after he had made a
thorough examination, which I submitted to. I went to his office 4 days in
succession. I was x-rayed several times and was given a very thorough
examination. At the completion of this I was informed that his diagnosis of my
case including the x-ray pictures were identical to the diagnosis in the rdg., after
which he treated me as suggested in the rdg. I followed the diet as closely as
possible and after several treatments I began to feel some improvements. I
cont'd with the tr. and took every tr. as suggested in the rdg. I can truthfully say
that I feel better than I have felt in yrs. I can drive my car and go any place that I
wish at any time, something I have not been able to do in yrs. I am indeed most
grateful to you."
R5. 11/8/34 Letter from Dr. A. R. Tucker from the Tucker-Carson Sanitarium,
Inc., Raleigh, N.C., to Mildred Davis:
Miss Mildred Mary Davis Association for Research and Enlightenment Virginia
Beach, Va.
Dear Miss Davis:
I have your letter of Nov. 7th, 1934 in reference to Mrs. [565]. Mrs. [565] was
under our care for about six weeks, her last treatment being July 31st, 1934. We
made Gastrointestinal X-ray and checked her up physically for every angle. Your
diagnosis was verified by our physical findings and we followed closely as
possible your suggestions as to treatment. Mrs. [565] made splendid progress
under treatment and she told me to-day that she is much better than she has
been for a long time.

you in any case you send. We certainly appreciate your recommending the other
three patients you mentioned in your letter, and if they come to us we will do our
very best for them.
Sincerely, [signed] A. R. Tucker
R6. 12/5/34 In reply to inquiry: "We have no objection to your using our name
and the name of our institution in reporting Mrs. [565]'s case."
R7. 12/34 A.R.E. Bulletin carried quotes from [Text of Reading] 565-1 with
marginal notes by Hugh Lynn Cayce as follows:
Par. 3 - NOT SERIOUS - Considering the fact that this woman had been ill for
several years, while being treated unsuccessfully by several doctors, this
statement is not only encouraging, but startling. The proof is results.
Par. 6 - WITHOUT EXAMINATION - 150 MILES AWAY - No examination of
Mrs. [565] had been made by Mr. Cayce or anyone connected with the
Association, yet in the very first of this reading we find specific descriptions of the
condition of the blood that were later verified by thorough, physical examinations.
Par. 6 - COULD THIS FIT ANYONE? - Here we have a description of spells of
dizziness with references to periods and causes. Only the patient would know if
these statements were accurate.
Par. 6 - ENCOURAGEMENT - In view of the long periods of suffering and the
alarming symptoms that might easily have indicated more serious conditions,
these statements are most encouraging.
Par. 8 - WITHOUT X-RAY - Here is a specific reference to the position of an
internal organ. (This was checked with X-Rays.) Notice that definite
cerebrospinal nerve centers are described as controlling this area, and that other
spinal centers are mentioned as being affected reflexly, thus producing
disturbances in the head and throat.
Par. 9 - NO VAGUENESS HERE - Any hit or miss approach is entirely lacking.
This reading goes directly to the causes of both the principal troubles and the
resulting reflex or secondary conditions. (In many cases, unfortunately, these
more disturbing reflexes are treated rather than the real cause.)
Par. 9 - MORE SYMPTOMS - Here are mentioned more definite symptoms,
results of reflex actions. Surely the patient could judge as to whether these
conditions existed as described.
Par. 14--15 - INTERNAL ANALYSIS - This summary of the relative activity of
the various organs of the body is clear and concise, completing a remarkably
thorough analysis of this physical condition.
Par. 17--21 - TREATMENT - Note the logical connection of each phase of the
treatment with the condition described. These are not suggestions for temporary
relief by the use of some sedative, but clear directions for remedying the basic
cause of the trouble.
Par. 22--26 - DIET - The suggestions for diet include not only foods that should
be taken at each meal, but also some that should not be taken.

SUMMARY
The completeness of our Case Study for this month is most gratifying. The
analysis was extremely clear and accurate, tracing both internal causes and
external symptoms. The suggested treatments were logical and easily carried
out. The reports on the results obtained from following the suggestions, coming
from both the doctor and the patient, indicate thorough cooperation.
This case is but another small link in the chain of our conclusions. Alone, it
might be classed by the skeptic as a coincidence or faked experiment. With
records of hundreds of a similar nature besides it in our files, we feel justified in
pressing forward. Do you know of someone similarly afflicted who might be
aided?
1. Demonstration after demonstration is proving the existence and application
of mental and spiritual faculties transcending accepted theories of natural laws.
2. Psychical information is consistently being made of practical value in
alleviating human suffering. 3. Greater understanding of the physical, mental and
spiritual laws of our universe, and practical services to our fellow men must lead
to a closer and more perfect relationship with the Creator. Only ignorance,
selfish prejudice, and fear prevent open-minded investigation.
R8. 2/26/36 Brother-in-law, Mr. [478]'s letter: "For approximately ten years prior
to the rdg. Mrs. [565] was in extremely poor health, constantly under the doctor's
care...she was gradually getting worse, especially her nervous system, and was
almost a fit subject for the insane asylum at the time the rdg. was obtained... Her
weight at the time the rdg.'s treatments were started was less than one hundred
lbs. Today she weighs one hundred and forty lbs. Her condition is as normal as
any person's. She can drive her own automobile, which she had not been able to
do for a period of years...
"It goes without saying that Mrs. [565], as well as her entire family, is extremely
grateful for what this rdg. has meant to her, both physically and mentally, as well
as for the happiness which has been brought to her home."
R9. GD's note: Dr. A. R. Tucker treated several other patients subsequently sent
to him with Edgar Cayce readings. Also his assistant, Dr. Edward M. Stafford.
Even after EC's death we referred people to him.
R10. 3/17/37 Routine mailing to Mrs. [565] was ret'd marked UNCLAIMED.
R11. 2/27/43 Dr. A. R. Tucker's ltr.: "I have thoroughly enjoyed your book
[THERE IS A RIVER] and am looking forward to meeting you in person some
time."
R12. 4/48 PHYSICAL READINGS BRIEFS by HLC included 565-1 under the
heading NERVOUS BREAKDOWN.
R13. 9/15/49 Samuel E. Benesch included 565-1 in his ABSTRACT OF 19
CASES OF NEURASTHENIA FROM THE EDGAR CAYCE RECORDS [see

TEXT OF READING 852-12 F 18 (Protestant)
This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at the home of Mrs. Kate B. Smith,
Route 2, Box 20, Hopkinsville, Ky., this 15th day of November, 1935.
Born June 5, 1917, near Hopkinsville, Christian County, Ky.
(Life Reading Suggestion)
1. EC: Yes, we have the entity here, and those relations with the universe and
universal forces; that are the records of the entity's experience in the earth and in
those environs during the interims between the earthly experiences, of that entity
now known as [852].
2. In giving the interpretation of those records here, let this be known to the entity
in its study - that is so innate in the experience and in that which may be
manifested in the mental abilities of the entity:
3. Environs and hereditary influences are much deeper than that which is
ordinarily conceded in the psychology of the present day.
4. For the environs and the hereditary influences are spiritual as well as physical,
and are physical because of the spiritual application of the abilities of the entity in
relationship to spiritual development.
5. For the purpose of each soul's experience in the earth is to become one with
the Creative Forces that manifest in human experience, if it will but APPLY same
in its relationships to its fellow man.
6. Hence what one is today is because of what one (the individual soul) HAS
DONE ABOUT that, the soul, knows OF the Creative Force or God IN its
experience, in WHATEVER environ or consciousness it - the soul - may
manifest.
7. The environs then in the earth, in any given experience, are those things that
make for the emotional body in that experience.
8. That which is innate, or that finds expression when the individual soul turns to
the Creative Force or God within, arises from the SOUL'S experience in those
environs ABOUT the earth.
9. Study these, and it - the study - will make for a great interest, or greater
interest, in the CAUSES of relationships in the earth; or in that which is termed
the genealogy of ideas, of individuals, of nations, of those things that go to make
up WHY individuals are born in this or that environment. For THAT is true
genealogy!
10. In the relationships of this entity, then, [852], as to the environs about the
earth, that make for those innate expressions that find their manifestations in the
thought, in the purpose, in the innate desire when the entity or soul turns within,
we find:
11. These arise from the sojourns of the entity IN environments rather than
because of any position of this or that planet, this or that phase of the Moon, or
this or that season of the Sun's influence upon the earth, or those environs about
same.
12. For rather has the soul of man been given that which may make an individual
expression to be one with the Creator; and has been given charge concerning
the universe, concerning the earth.

13. Hence such relationships or influences come to pass because of that a soul
has done about its opportunities in its relationships with its fellow man, or soulexpression.
14. In Mercury we find that making for a high mental ability, especially as in
relationships to tongues and their influence upon the individuals that are
classified under such an environ - and the relationships in the experience of such
individual tongues upon the human family. And especially to this entity that
contribution such a tongue or group has made towards man's ability to give
greater expression of Creative Energy or Force in the experience of man IN
materiality.
15. In Venus we find the influence making for both that as may become adverse
and that which is constructive in the experience of the entity.
16. For friendships, duties, the obligations, or the entity's expressions of sincerity,
arise from those influences experienced by the soul in that environ. As do also
those relationships as regarding the home and in the filial relationships and in the
marital relationships. These, too, become as experiences that applied in the
experience of the ENTITY may make for weal or woe, dependent upon its (the
environ's) relationships to spiritual or Creative Influence in the activity.
17. Hence we find the natural tendencies for making of friendships that are
lasting, yet rather exclusive does the entity become in choosing its companions
or its closer friendships. And these be well in that as expressed in the mental
efficiency, mental abilities through the Mercurian influence. Yet these can be
carried to an extreme. Well that choice be made, but choice as to whether self
will be a contribution to the individual relationships for greater constructive
influence - as well as receiving same from such friendships and such
relationships.
18. Those influences in Jupiter we find rather in an affluence that the entity will or
may wield upon public opinion, group, mass, or great bodies of peoples, rather
than of the individual. For the individuals, as we have said, become rather the
matter of choice.
19. And the entity's expressions and manifestations in the material experience in
the present, then, become rather such as will be far-reaching in the influence
wielded upon masses and groups.
20. Hence in those abilities of teaching or ministering to those in classes, in
teaching or in preparations for activities in any given development for MATERIAL
abilities or for spiritual expressions, these naturally become then the fields of
activity.
21. Yet the ENTITY chooses, rather than that as may be set as a GIVEN way or
manner.
22. In Neptune we find those things of the mystic nature, or the mysterious.
Hence we find those things that pertain to amulets, charms, or those things that
deal with the influence that arises from the environs of certain kinds of music, all
become a portion of the entity's experience.
23. Not EVERY character of music, nor every character of writing, nor every
character of painting, nor every character of expression of the artistic

28
PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
temperament of individuals or groups, becomes a portion of the entity. Rather
does the entity make for the SELECTIVE influence in such relationships.
24. Yet as we will find, those things that are old, those that are blue, those that
are of gold, and those that are new, these should be a portion of the dress or of
the environment; whether in the home, in the activity, or in whatever field of
expression. These become a portion of the entity for wielding an influence in the
manner in which the entity (the soul) gives expression to same in ITS
relationships to its fellow man.
25. As to the appearances then in the earth that become as the emotional portion
of the entity's experience, we find:
26. These make for expressions that are termed by many as peculiar. Not that it
makes the entity appear curious, but just DIFFERENT from others. Not that it
makes the entity appear as one set or hard headed; yet it is as one that is rather
determined in its manner of seeking - or of expression or of making for
manifestations.
27. Yet the entity will do well to know the basis in self that PROMPTS that
expression, and KNOW that it is not of a selfish motive.
28. For selfishness is the besetting sin of man.
29. Tolerance, faith, patience - THESE be expressions that may make for the
happiness that all are crying for. Yet so few are willing to pay the price for same
- which is tolerance, patience, and SELFLESSNESS in the expressions to its
associates, its fellow man, its activities in the earth.
30. Before this, then, we find the entity was in the earth during those periods
when there were the settlings in the land of the present nativity. It was during
those periods when there was the seeking for an expression of a people in the
separations from those that would make for that termed tyranny, or the taxation
without representation.
31. During that period the entity was in the land now known as or called Virginia,
and about that town now being reinstated or set again into those environs of the
peoples during that giving of expression to self.
32. Then in the name Cathrine Hepbure, the entity made for those activities that
aided much - in and about those meetings that called for the separation of the
colonists and the groups that sought to give self-expression.
33. And the entity aided not only in helping many but even in helping that one
who gave expression in that document now so dear to so many, and so little
observed by those who cry the loudest! For the entity then was as an aide to
Jefferson, who wrote that document.
34. Those records may yet be found in the Bruton Church.
35. In the experiences the entity gained and lost. Gained in the service as
rendered; lost when there were not those credits given, and the little
consideration given - when a desire for vengeance arose in the experience.
36. Yet in the latter portion, when there began to be those periods of a general
activity that gave greater expression of that obtained through the Revolution - as
termed, the entity then became as a teacher of language in the schools nigh unto
that present school in that land.

29
PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
37. And that in the present gives the abilities of the entity in the sounding of the
various forms of English and the various forms of those tongues that become as
a contribution to what may be termed the American tongue rather than the
English tongue.
38. Before that we find the entity was in that land from which there was a real
soon entrance into the period just given; for it was during those periods when
Louis the Sixteenth in France made the turmoils that brought for a peoples the
turmoils - to many.
39. Yet from that period there grew the very principles for which the entity in the
expression next found an outlet for its activity.
40. The entity then was among those who rebelled against those in authority,
leading in the activities against the Queen and those that held for those activities
of that in authority.
41. The entity was among the first of those of her own group that were cut off by
those activities in the uprising, in the name then Celecentei.
42. In the experience in the present, while those activities hold an innate desire
for the knowing of same, yet there is held deep within self an abhorrence. Yet
those expressions as to personal liberty, personal expression, are a part of the
entity; and seek for the activity in which self and those principles held innate and
manifested may find a means of expression.
43. Before that we find the entity was in that period when there was the
expanding of the Roman land, when settlements were being made in what is now
northern Africa, the Holy Land, and the isles of the sea.
44. The entity then was one in authority, as one who gave the necessity of those
groups or those peoples to make their report to Caesar in the Latin tongue.
45. Hence in the experience the entity created or made for itself many of those
things that brought to the entity condemnations from those in authority in some of
those lands, yet the entity's contribution to its own people - as well as to the world
in general - was in writing into the Roman tongue the teachings of Paul, Peter
and Titus.
46. These brought to the entity not only a self-satisfying experience, but the
knowledge innate within self that the abilities within self were of the nature that its
own contribution would remain as lasting experiences in the minds and the
hearts of those that were to pass that way.
47. Then, hold within self ever those ideals, those purposes, that were purported
during that experience. For THEN did the entity gain, though under stress and
strain from the material angles, the greater soul expressions. For those
teachings of Him, who is and who ever will be the Savior of men, brought
harmony, peace and understanding in the expressions of the entity.
48. And oft, if the entity will read those expressions in Romans, Philemon,
Timothy, there will be brought the awakening from within that will arouse to
activity.
49. Judge not others that have not awakened so, but let thine own life, thine own
example, thine own expression, become as then - a LIVING way; that others may
see the light, and be encouraged, that they - too - may RENEW their faith, their
hope.

PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
50. For, as thou hast given in thine manner of interpretation and expression; He
IS the light, He IS the way, and no man approaches the Father save through that
LIVING way, "As ye do it unto the least of these, my brethren, ye do it unto me."
51. Would that all would but write that upon their hearts, their souls, and know it
IS the living way!
52. Before that we find the entity was in the land now known as or called the
Egyptian, during those periods when there were those interpretations and
activities that made for the correlating of the teachings of other teachers, other
leaders in varied lands.
53. Hence the entity's activity during that experience made for the translations, as
it were, to the various dialects (rather than languages) of that experience.
54. And the entity's activities in the Egyptian land, after those periods of
concentration and consecration of body and mind through the activities and the
initiations in the Temple Beautiful, became rather associated with those in the
land of the Mongoloid - or in those temples that are yet to be uncovered.
55. For with the entity's missions there, and the entity's activities, the entity
became as the leader or the Princess of those people to the activities in the
Temple of Gold; the temple that was set with the jewels of the land.
56. Hence the entity's activities brought to the peoples of many lands a greater
understanding, a greater interpretation; yet eventually worked for the dissipating
of authority in high places.
57. From those experiences of the entity, as Isth-She-Both, there comes the
desire of self-adornment, the desire for self- expression as in activities before
others - and the abilities for leaderships in whatever activity the entity may
undertake.
58. As to the abilities of the entity in the present, and that to which it may attain,
and how:
59. Turn to those activities in the Roman experience, and become rather as the
interpreter, as a teacher, as an active force in giving to others those beauties that
may come from the study of those peoples of that period - who had RATHER the
spiritual insight than the commercial or the might and power; hence again
became a contributor to the literature of those who seek, or those who would
know the way of the Cross.
60. For His ways are not past finding out; and it is not done from without self but
from within.
61. For as thou has interpreted, thy body is indeed the temple of the living God;
and He has promised to meet thee there.
62. Turn WITHIN! Let Him, thy God, be thy source of supply. For in Him ye
move and have thy being.
63. Let that thou doest, then, with thy hands, thy mind, be rather the
interpretation of HIS power, HIS force, HIS love for THY fellow man;
remembering - as has been given - that as ye do it unto the least of thy
associates, of thy brethren, ye do it unto Him.
64. Ready for questions.
65. (Q) Where should I receive the best training for this work?
(A) William and Mary! [See 3/21/40 Letter 852-12, Par. R9.]

66. (Q) How can I improve my disposition?
(A) Study to show thyself approved unto thy Maker. Keep the words of truth
as thou knowest them in thy heart. Keep thyself unspotted from the world.
These tenets, not AS tenets nor merely as sayings but as practices in thine daily
association.
For the law of the Lord is that; if ye would have friends, be friendly; if you
would have others smile on thee, smile on others. If ye would have others do
good to thee, do good, speak kindly, speak gently. Be not harsh because others
do not see or do not understand or comprehend even as self, for the soft word
turneth away wrath even as the grievous words stir up anger.
These NOT as sayings, but as practical applications in thine daily experience, will
make for a beauty in thy life that others - not thyself but others - will bless thee!
67. (Q) What influence causes me to be afraid of darkness?
(A) Those experiences in the activities of the Colonial period; but more
particularly from the experiences in the dungeon in which thou wert plunged in
France….

TEXT OF READING 1052-1 M 47 (M.D. Degree)
This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at the Warshawsky home, 3046
Webb Ave., Detroit, Michigan, this 30th day of November, 1935.
(Physical Suggestion)
1. EC: Yes, we have the body here, [1052].
2. Now, as we find, there are disturbances that prevent the normal functioning,
the normal activities through the physical forces of this body. These, as we find,
are rather of an insidious nature, causing effects that produce disturbances in the
functioning of organs; more specific in the sensory forces, but producing a
reaction also in other portions of the body.
3. These, then, are the conditions as we find them with this body, [1052] we are
speaking of:
Edgar Cayce Readings copyright 1971, 1993-2012 by the Edgar Cayce Foundation
33
PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
4. First, IN THE BLOOD SUPPLY, we find there are indications of disturbances
in the mucous membranes of the head, and that the nature of same is catarrhal.
Then, by the form of resistances made by the nature of the disorder upon the
mucous membranes, there is a drying condition which has existed, does exist,
through the antrum and the nasal passages. Thus disturbances are caused that
make for an effluvium in the blood supply that produces distresses to the organs
of the system that find themselves rather in the form of nervous reactions through
the body. Through this same activity there is produced at times an upsetting in
the digestive forces of the body itself. Thus periods are caused when there is
some disturbance in the eliminations, by the very nature of these; producing a
drying, as it were, through the alimentary canal, thus making for lack of the
peristaltic movement through same. At others there is the reverting to those
influences as to produce toxic forces of the nature that become gas forming; thus
making for disturbances that arise from the same principal or basic cause that
has been indicated in the soft tissue of the face.
5. IN THE NERVE REACTIONS, we find there is a disturbance produced through
the centers or ganglia from which these portions of the body receive their
reactions from the cerebrospinal and sympathetic systems, in their coordinated
activity. Thus impulses are caused that make for fears of the nature where the
body - if peering over cliffs or large places - becomes dizzy; or certain characters
of movements make for periods of nausea or of activity that produces fear in the
very activities themselves of the system. These are rather nervous reflexes.
6. IN THE ORGANS OF THE BODY ITSELF, as indicated, the greater portion of
the basis or cause arises from disturbances in the tissue of the nasal passages;
and the antrum and the soft tissue of the head.
7. Hence we have an evolvement from same of a strain upon the Eustachian
tubes themselves, thus producing to the auditory forces the responses that lack
the proper coordination - or a tendency for the drying of tissue, or the keeping of
an unbalancing. First the disturbance became apparent to the auditory forces by
singings, or poppings in the ears. Now more and more there are those activities
towards the LACK of their becoming coordinant; and sound as at a distance, or
again as an OVERFLOW or a roar. These are the disturbances that arise from
this conditions as we find in those portions of the system.
8. The throat, the bronchi and lungs and larynx, naturally from the very nature of
these, we find tendencies for a circulation that becomes disturbed at times.
Hence we find the body easily susceptible to cold or to change or to heat or to
those effects of an over stimulating of a diet, as we have indicated from
disturbances through the digestive forces. Hence an irritation or a rasping at
times occurs from the cold that may affect the bronchi and the upper portion or a
portion of the lung forces themselves. However, as we find, if these were
removed in the present there would be prevented the inroads or the affecting of
organs themselves in such a way and manner as to cause gradual disturbance.
Yet it leaves a tendency, or the body is SUSCEPTIBLE to germ forces or natures
that may set up themselves to become destructive forces by the inability of the
blood supply to produce the plasm that would encase or destroy same. Hence
we have those conditions both specific and of susceptible or bodily conditions of
Edgar Cayce Readings copyright 1971, 1993-2012 by the Edgar Cayce Foundation
34
PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
such natures as to become susceptible to exterior influences, or those effects of
pollens or other conditions that make for these tendencies upon the sympathetic
system - as indicated through the very unbalanced conditions as produced in the
body.
9. Heart's activity near to normal, considering the general conditions.
10. The digestive forces, as indicated, are upset from the influences of the flow;
not only through the circulatory forces but by those tendencies of the assimilation
or the flow of the mucous through the throat and those portions of the body to
absorb or to take in particles that become destructive to the stomach tissues, or
making for an involvement throughout the alimentary canal.
11. As to the organs of the digestive forces - the liver, spleen, pancreas and the
activities of the ducts or glands that make for the secretions - these under a
normal stimuli function near to normal; though distresses at times and tendencies
exist there.
12. THEN, IN MAKING FOR CORRECTIONS, AS WE WOULD FIND FOR THIS
BODY, [1052] we are speaking of:
13. First we would use those applications of heat as may be applied through the
use of the nasal passages of the Elliot Appliance, that may make for an adding of
those influences through such heat that will take away the abilities of those
destructive forces - that arise from the catarrhal effect upon the system itself.
14. And then we would make for corrections in a nature where osteopathic
administrations or adjustments would loosen those tissues where there are the
effects upon the eustachian tubes. We would then find the auditory forces
responding, as the balance of force is created in the body itself.
15. We find that there would be little necessity of medications internally, save
those that may be of the nature that would be absorbing in their effect upon the
body; as in very small quantities of Milk of Bismuth with Elixir of Lactated Pepsin
that might be taken occasionally for their desirable effect that these will produce
upon the gastric flow of the stomach itself. These would be taken only when
there are those effects of a gastric flow that is disturbing to the system.
16. These do, and - as we find - we would bring near to normal conditions for this
body.
17. As to how often, as to how long these applications would be made with the
heat - until there is a dissolving of and eliminations are set up sufficient through
the drainages established by the manipulative forces as to rid the system of the
causes of the condition. And then once, possibly twice may be the necessity for
the breaking loose of tissue that has become involved along the Eustachian
tubes. These may not necessitate the full finger surgery activity, if the release is
made by the heat - but sufficient of the manipulations to set up a stimulation for
proper drainages to be established from the sensory organs of the body, and the
eliminations through the alimentary canal, the respiratory system, the activities of
the hepatic circulation and the perspiratory system coordinated.
18. Do that.
19. Ready for questions.

35
PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
20. (Q) Has previous illness at time back affected hearing?
(A) Only made the body, as it were, more supersensitive to the effects of the
condition that has for long existed there.
21. (Q) Please explain why hearing is clearer when riding in an automobile?
(A) VIBRATIONS as are set up by any activities. Just as it is over the phone!
The effect is upon the sympathetic nervous system attempting to carry those
influences or impulses that are rather or more affected by the cerebro-spinal
impulse. This will disappear gradually.
The manipulations, of course, will be from the upper portion of the 8th and
9th dorsal to the base of the brain.
22. (Q) Will the hearing be restored?
(A) More than eighty percent restored from the disturbance in the present.
It is now at about a sixty percent; so eight-five percent of the forty percent would
be near to normal.
23. We are through for the present.

11/28/38 Mrs. [1773]'s letter to EC:
Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Sir:
I read in a magazine [8/28 Health Culture article by Dr. Thomas L. Garrett See Par. B1 above] about your wonderful work in relieving human ailments, even
though many miles away.
I am 38 years old. The mother of 3 boys.
For over a year I have been miserable. I feel sure the underlying reason is a
nervous condition that has resulted in FEAR. Fear, mostly for myself, I am
ashamed to say. But I have tried - oh, so hard - to throw it off and be calm so
that we could all be happier and I could be a better mother to my boys. They
need me so. I don't think of much but my physical condition.
If I could but have peace of mind and contentment, would not the physical
conditions right themselves? The more I try, the worse it seems to get.
Could you - WOULD YOU - help me.
Sincerely Mrs. [1773]

PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
3. Now as we find, the conditions with this body are rather specific. And unless
there are some corrections made, the condition will become much more serious.
4. These as we find are the effects of impingements in the structural portions of
the system, thus causing the irritation between the cerebrospinal and
sympathetic nervous systems; which upsets at times not only the emotional but
the rationality of the whole reactions, as well as disturbing the functioning of the
bodily forces.
5. As we find, with the birth of the child (the last), there was a straining of the
pelvic bone, and an unbalancing. And this, with the unbalanced condition, has
gradually produced through the sacro-ileac and through the nerve plexus in the
end of the spine those pressures that are causing all of these disturbances with
the conditions of the body.
6. Then, we would correct the condition in the whole of the cerebrospinal system;
osteopathically; especially reducing those conditions in the coccyx area, and
making for a balance in the pelvic area; coordinating the rest of the cerebrospinal
system with same.
7. We would have sufficient of the low electrical forces from the Radio-Active
Appliance to equalize the vibratory forces which have been upset throughout the
system. Use this for thirty to forty minutes each day, and let this period be used
as the period of meditation and prayer; preferably as the body rests in the
afternoon. The attachments would be made to the extremities, in this manner:
8. 1st day - make the positive connection FIRST (the place coming from the red
anode, you see), to the right wrist; the negative connection LAST (the plate
coming from the black anode), to the left ankle.
9. 2nd day - the first would be to the left wrist, the last to the right ankle.
10. 3rd day - first to the left ankle, last to the right wrist.
11. 4th day - fist to the right ankle, last to the left wrist.
12. Thus a circle will have been made of the body. Then commence over again,
alternating the attachments each day in this manner. Do this for three to four
rounds of such applications, or series, then leave off for a week or ten days, then
begin again.
13. Doing these, we will bring the near to normal forces for this body.
14. After there have been taken the adjustments for a month or six weeks, we
would being then to take some regular exercise; as that to make for a balancing
of the equilibrium of the structural body; such as:
15. Mornings upon arising, take for two minutes and exercise in this manner, where the body, standing with the feet flat on the floor, gently rises to the toes, at
the same time bringing the arms high above the head. Then bring these as far
back as possible or practical, swinging both arms back. Then gradually bring
them towards the front, then let down. Breathe IN as the body rises, and OUT as
the body brings the hands to the front, slowly. Do this three or four times each
morning (AFTER some of the adjustments have been made by the osteopath, as
indicated). This is an excellent exercise for posture and for aiding in keeping this
balance which will be set up by the general manipulations as combined with the
osteopathic corrective forces.

R2. 1/17/38 [39?] Mrs. [1773]'s letter to EC:
..., Mich.
Dear Mr. Cayce,
Thank you for your very kind letter of the 3rd.
The reading arrived on the 3rd. I immediately went to Dr. Thompson & have
had seven treatments so far. Inasmuch as the reading did not state how often
the treatments were to be given, he suggested three times a week for a couple of
weeks and then a longer time between treatments. Do you think that all right?
I am taking the Codiron tablets as suggested.
The Radio Active appliance arrived on the 14th. I have used it each day
since. If I find it impossible to use it in the P.M. [A.M.?] will it be all right to use it
before retiring at night?
Mr. Cayce, how long do you think it will be before this disturbing state of mind
gives way to calm and confidence.
The tantalizing thought that I might do something harmful to someone
particularly my own family, constantly reoccurs to me. I argue with myself, how
perfectly ridiculous it is, nevertheless it always come back. That particular chain

of a woman who became demented and tried to harm her own children.

I have mentioned this particular fear to no-one but somehow feel you would
understand & advise me. If I could only completely forget it, I would be so
thankful.
Mrs. [1100] and I had a very pleasant conversation on the telephone. She is
so very encouraging and assures me to carry on and all will be all right.
Any further suggestions you may have for me will be appreciated.
Sincerely, Mrs. [1773]
R3. 1/23/39 EC's letter to Mrs. [1773]:
Dear Mrs. [1773]
Thank you for yours of the 17th - wish I knew why one feels drawn closer to
some people than others. Think I know just how you must feel at times about all
of you - but think you are on the right track. Am sure you find Dr. Thompson a
very lovely man and an excellent Dr. Did he find the unbalance as suggested in
the structural portion of the body? Be sure and ask him this and let me know - am
sure the period he has suggested is correct. Would keep up the cod-iron and the
Appliance - and may I suggest this Mrs. [1773] when you are using the appliance
and resting - use that period for your prayer and meditation. Read will say the
30th of Deut - or the 23 Psalm and meditate as to just what these mean in your
own experience. Fill your mind with the promises of GOD and all that fear will
soon disappear. Many such passages will help you to realize how close HE is to
you and that you have no fear with HIM nigh.
Please don't think me a nut on the subject of the Bible - but feel you will find it
a very practical every day experience and that it applies to you now - in your daily
life - and life will be much more beautiful. And to your usefulness to your family,
your friends will be much better - the joy of living will be yours for HIS promises
are yours.
Thanking you - and see and talk with Mrs. [1100] whenever you can have her
introduce you to Mrs. [480], a very lovely young lady, a friend of ours - she has a
new baby [1788] - am to give a life reading for him very soon - am sure you will
love her.
With all good wishes - and please write at any time.
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce
R4. 2/2/39 Mrs. [1773]'s letter to EC:
..., Mich.
Dear Mr. Cayce Thank you for your very kind letter of the 23rd.
I can't answer your question as to whether Dr. Thompson found the
unbalance as suggested in the reading. Dr. Thompson has been out of the city
for two weeks and I am now informed that he will be gone for perhaps three
months. He has an assistant taking care of his practice. I have had treatments
from this new man.
I inquired of him if he had found any unbalance in the structural part of the
body. He said he wouldn't say so.

I am enclosing $10.00 for a check reading. Can you let me have it as soon as
possible? There has been no improvement in my condition as yet. In fact I seem
almost more disturbed than ever.
Have tried so hard to relax and meditate, as you suggested, but only become
more tense and doubtful of everything.
Mr. Cayce, in that article by Dr. Garrett some time ago, he wrote something
about the possibility of contacting the subconscious mind & replacing destructive
negative thoughts with positive constructive thoughts. Is such a thing possible? I
have wondered about this. What do you think about it?
I do hope that I am not imposing on you too much but somehow feel free to
talk to you. Am so terribly anxious to be free from this undercurrent of morbid
thoughts & have normal reactions.
These are a few questions I would like to have answered in the reading Who is suggested to give the osteopathic treatments during Dr. Thompson's
absence and how often should I take the treatments.
Am I using the radio-active appliance correctly and is it all right to use it
before retiring when it is inconvenient to use it in the P.M.
Have I entered my menopause?
Continuing the treatments as outlined in the reading, how long before I should
have definite mental improvement?
Are the ductless glands affected?
If you can give me the check reading before a letter could reach me just wire
me collect and I will be here at the designated time. Otherwise I am enclosing an
air-mail stamp for your reply.
Sincerely, Mrs. [1773]

TEXT OF READING 1773-2 F 38
This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent,
Virginia Beach, Va., this 5th day of February, 1939.
3. Now as we find, there is an improvement in the structural positions of the body
from that as we have had here before.
4. While there continues to be those anxieties and those disturbing influences as
arise from some disturbance through the glandular system, we find that there is
considerable improvement in the body.
5. In the present then, we would keep the applications of the Radio-Active
Appliance in the manner it has been applied. This would be taken at the time that
is most convenient, but as close to the periods when the body can rest without
disturbance as possible. Use such periods for the prayer and meditation, as has
been indicated for the body.
6. Read thoroughly the admonitions that have been indicated, applying them to
self; and there will be a great improvement in the attitude of the body - if there is
the adherence to those influences.
7. We would not use the osteopathic corrective forces in the immediate; that is,
we would rest from these for at least three or four weeks.
Edgar Cayce Readings copyright 1971, 1993-2012 by the Edgar Cayce Foundation
42
PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
8. Each morning, though, before any meal is taken, we would take one minim of
Atomidine in half a glass of water as a purifier for the whole of the glandular
forces of the body. Take this in series; that is, take it for five to six or seven days,
or a week, see? leave off for five days, then take for another week, leave off for
five day more, then take for another week; just the one minim, you see, so that it
will not upset the system but tend to make for the purifying and creating a better
balance in the glandular activity.
9. After the rest period from the osteopathic treatments for three to four weeks,
then there may be begun the adjustments again; at that time having more of
those relaxations for the upper dorsal and through the cervical area, but keeping
the lumbar axis and coccyx balanced with the rest of the system.
10. Ready for questions.
11. (Q) Have I entered my menopause?
(A) As we find, while there is some retarding, we do not find it entering as yet;
though the glandular disturbances cause disorder in these directions.
The manipulative forces, the equal balance being created by the RadioActive vibrations, with the attitudes, should make for better conditions in these
directions also.
12. (Q) Are the ductless glands affected?
(A) As indicated, all of the glands are involved. Hence the purifying of same,
since there IS the ability of the system to set up better eliminations. To have
stimulated same without the corrective measures having been made would have
been only to magnify the disturbance in portions of the system.
13. (Q) Am I using the Radio-Active Appliance correctly?
(A) As indicated.
14. (Q) If Dr. Thompson has not returned at the end of the three to four week rest
period suggested for me, who is suggested to give me these treatments?
(A) Then choose someone who may have been associated with Dr.
Thompson.
15. (Q) How often should I then take the treatments?
(A) About twice a week for three weeks, rest then a week to ten days, and
then have another series.
And after the second or third such round, we would give further instructions.
16. (Q) Continuing the treatments as outlined in the Reading, how long before I
should have definite mental improvement?
(A) Within the next four to five weeks.
17. (Q) Any further advice?
(A) Do these as we find for the best for this body, [1773].
18. We are through with this Reading.

Dear Mr. Cayce I am sorry to be so late in sending this letter with my check.
Our house is in quarantine for scarlet fever and I only learned this P.M. that
the Board of Health would allow mail to go out of the house as long as the person
who is ill has not been in contact with it.
As for myself - sometimes I think I am better - then again I don't. I had a cold
about a month ago that seemed to set me back. Have been going to the
osteopath regularly.
I don't think there are any questions in particular this time. Just would like to
know how you find my condition to be now, as this is about the time suggested in
my first check reading for further instructions.

TEXT OF READING 1773-3 F 38 (Hebrew)
This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent,
Virginia Beach, Va., this 3rd day of April, 1939.
3. As we find, there are improvements in some respects. In others the body
loses hold upon itself.
4. And those conditions as we find in the pelvis, as were first indicated, need now
further corrections. These as we find we would have done osteopathically.
5. We would have the body advise the friends there as respecting WHOM to
have, and to indicate to them the conditions that need correction; and thus
following the advice as was given in the first suggestion for the osteopathic
corrections.
6. In the mental attitudes we would hold to those that have been indicated for
constructive influences. And if this is done in a prayerful, meditative manner,
following the suggestions that have been indicated as portions of the Holy Writ as
should be not just memorized but realized as a living experience in the
application of self in relationships to its home, to its friends, to its neighbors, to
even its passing acquaintances, - we will find it will not only aid materially in the
corrections that are being sought to be made osteopathically in the structural
portions of the body to relieve the tensions but will make the whole outlook upon
life and its activities much more, not tolerable but much more worth while!
7. And the joy of life will again be a part of the entity's experience!
8. We are through with this Reading.

R2. 6/26/39 Mrs. [1773]'s ltr. to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce I haven't written to you for I haven't had any really good news to write.
My physical condition is, I think, good but the mental state is not.
Mr. Cayce, I have tried so hard to fasten my thoughts on the bible as was
suggested but find myself in the most frightful state. The "hows" & "whys" that
enter my mind are so depressing. Just don't know, at times, what it is all about.
I don't know how to word a question or questions for the reading to bring out what
will help me. I just can't seem to help myself at all.
I talked with a psychiatrist. He seemed to think it was a neurosis caused by
some incident or incidents caused of childhood and that psycho analysis would
help but it would entail so much expense. We just can't afford it unless it is the
only answer. Then there is the possibility of the success of the use of hypnotism
being helpful. Will you tell me what you think of this?
Should I continue the osteopathic treatments and how often? I am taking them
Dr. Crowder [S. A. Crowder, D.O.] - the same man Mrs. [1100] goes to:
Should I use the radio active appliance again & is it in good condition?...
Sincerely, Mrs. [1773]
R3. 6/28/39 EC's letter to Mrs. [1773]:
Dear Mrs. [1773]
Have yours of the 26th - glad to know that you are feeling better physically and
hope you will continue to do so. The first open time we have is the afternoon of
the 5th 3.30 to 4.30 E.S.T. Don't know whether ... is on Eastern time or Central or whether you have daylight time or not - but you will be able to figure this out
from your time. Will try Mrs. [1773] to make the suggestion such to include the
depression you feel at times - had felt this should be helped with the physical
improvement. Do hope we may be able to offer some suggestion that will help,
and you will not have to go to a Psychiatrist - know there are some that are fine
but have seen some very sad experiences with them.
Hoping the time as set is not too far off for you - and that you have more
questions for the period.
Wish you might have been with us at the recent meetings - they were fine
large crowd - and we were fortunate in having Mr. [470] and Mrs. [1100] with us
throughout the meeting. Wish you could have talked with Mr. [257] - he has
recently had experience with two cases [Mr. [1513], Miss [1789]] mental
disturbance - with the most marvelous results. Am sure would do you good to
hear him tell it. No he is not a Dr. but a Furniture man, but has been an observer
of the phenomena for nearly 27 years. Hoping the time suits you with all good
wishes, Sincerely [signed] Edgar Cayce

Dear Mr. Cayce:
Here are a few questions that are of interest to both the Osteopath and myself.
In the first reading it was found that my condition was the result of impingements
in the structural portions of the system, thus causing the irritation between the
cerebrospinal and sympathetic nervous systems which upsets not only the
emotional but the rationality of the whole reactions. Is it still this condition that
continues to cause the mental depression or exhaustion. Have these
impingements improved with the treatments?
Should I continue the osteopathic treatments and how often?
Should the osteopathic manipulations of the coccyx be external or externalinternal in nature? (Of especial interest to the Osteopath)
Are the Hematinic Plastules of benefit in my case - if not what is suggested for
the anemia.
Are any glandular substances now indicated? If so - what?
What is the nature of the alleged adenomas in the anterior portion of the neck?
Should I use the radio active appliance again and is it in good condition?
Any other suggestions that will help relieve this present condition will be
appreciated.
Sincerely Mrs. [1773]

BACKGROUND OF READING 1773-4 F 38
B1. See 1773-3.
TEXT OF READING 1773-4 F 38
This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent,
Virginia Beach, Va., this 5th day of July, 1939.
3. Now as we find, there are a great deal of helpful forces that have come to this
body.
4. However, there are still those periods of repression, or the tendencies for the
body to become fearful when alone or in too deep a meditative mood; owing to
those conditions which have existed and that need a better coordination,
especially in those areas of the coccyx AND the area of the coordination of the
lower nerve forces to the lower limbs, or the sciatics, AND the general portions of
the nerve forces of the body.
5. We would keep the occasionally-given corrections for the coccyx end of the
spine, - that will need some internal as well as external applications, to raise the
end of the spine, see?
6. These we would have about once a week.
7. Also, not too often, but about twice a week, and for thirty to sixty minutes at the
time, we would use the Radio-Active Appliance. Keep the plates very polished
and clean, and let the Appliance set in the ice for five or ten minutes before it is
used. Let such a period of application be used also for the spiritual elevation of
constructive forces within the bodily influences; using those thoughts that have
been indicated, but of course in the body's own words, - not as rote, not as

48
PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
something just to be said, but as something to be felt, to be lived, to be applied in
the relationships with others.
8. If this is done, we should find continued improvement, not only in the general
physical health but the reactions of same to conditions of every nature about the
body.
9. For putting the suggestions into application in the manner indicated, or putting
the desire for helpful influence INTO practical application with individuals met
daily, in the home, with those about self; we will see changes coming for the
better.
10. Ready for questions.
11. (Q) Is there still the impinged condition in the spinal system that causes the
continued mental depression or exhaustion.
(A) If there was a whole connection, we would not advise the continuance of
corrective measures. Especially is there not a full accord in the coccyx end of
the spine.
12. (Q) Have these impingements improved with the treatments?
(A) These have been improved, or else there would not be better physical
conditions!
13. (Q) What is the nature of the alleged adenomas in the anterior portion of the
neck?
(A) As we find, these are a reflex from those conditions in the lower portion of
the spine, - which may be materially aided by the correction of those areas in the
coccyx, as well as - of course - a gentle or general treatment in the upper dorsal
and cervical.
14. (Q) Are the Hematinic Plastules of benefit in my case? If not, what is
suggested for anemia?
(A) As we find, a BETTER combination would be found in CODIRON; for the
vitamin balance is much better for the general GLANDULAR system, as well as
the iron in its MANNER of combination with the cod liver oil. Take one Codiron
tablet with each meal.
15. (Q) Are any glandular substances now indicated?
(A) As indicated, only that as may be had from the correct balance of the
vitamin forces in this compound known as Codiron.
16. (Q) Any other suggestions that will help relieve this present condition?
(A) Do these as we find, for the better conditions of this body.
17. We are through with this Reading.

Dear Mr. CayceMy condition isn't satisfactory as yet and I would appreciate the further advice
of a reading.
I have been going on with the osteopathic treatments by Dr. Crowder. He has
had a couple of blood counts taken to verify the improvement in the anemic
condition. About three months ago there was a very low red count but it has
improved with increased dosage of Codiron. However he would like to know
what is the cause of the disturbed balance in the white cell count - namely small
lymphocytes are increased & polyleucocytes morphonuclear are increased denoting infection from some source.
He would also like to know the condition of the spine - as you find it - and
advise as to further manipulations.
I would like to know why I have this very disagreeable metallic taste in my
mouth quite a lot.
Any other advise will be appreciated.

TEXT OF READING 1773-5 F 39
This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent,
Virginia Beach, Va., this 6th day of October, 1939.
3. As we find, there are changes; some for the betterment; some apparently in
the present making for more aggravating conditions.
4. In the general application of the massage and corrections, we find there
should be greater stress on setting up eliminations, especially from the
alimentary canal.
5. Keep these in the way they have been indicated, but with greater stimulation
for the eliminations through the alimentary canal; for, the general nerve system in
relation to the assimilating forces tends to create irritations.
6. We find that small quantities of Chloride of Gold and Soda would be beneficial,
in aiding the nerve tendons in the system, by the assimilations as would be
caused by such activity through the body. These should be taken in small
quantities, but taken rather consistently for regular periods. These as we find
would also act to eliminate those tendencies for the metallic tastes which arise
from the activity of the gastric forces in the digestive system.
7. The active principles of these are to add or stimulate glandular activity,
especially to the nerve energies; and taken in the manner as may be here
indicated would be most beneficial. Prepare in this manner:
Edgar Cayce Readings copyright 1971, 1993-2012 by the Edgar Cayce Foundation
51
PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
8. The Gold Solution would be in the proportion of one grain Chloride of Gold to
one ounce of Distilled Water.
9. The Soda Solution would be two grains of BICARBONATE of Soda (for this
body) to one ounce of Distilled Water.
10. These would be kept separate.
11. When the dosage is to be taken, add one drop of the Gold Solution and two
drops of the Soda Solution in half a glass of water and take each morning before
any meal is taken. Take in this manner for five days, leave off five, - then repeat
again for another five days, - continuing in this manner until at least the whole
ounce of the Gold Solution has been taken. Only one minim of the Gold
Solution, two minims of the Soda Solution, at a dose. The Bicarbonate of Soda
would be used for this body, rather than the other.
12. These as we find should bring the better influences and forces for this body.
13. Ready for questions.
14. (Q) What is cause of the disturbed balance in the white cell count?
(A) The lack of the energies in the glandular or assimilating forces to supply
the lymph, as to make up portions of nerve plasm, - and this is causing a
disturbance in this ratio through the system.
This will be materially aided by the taking of the Solution as indicated in the body.
15. (Q) What is the condition of the spine, and what further advice as to
manipulations?
(A) As indicated, there needs to be a stimulation to the eliminating forces, especially in the upper dorsal and cervical areas.
The centers, or activities in portions are rather sensitive; owing to the lack of
the supply of lymph and the flow in the nerve system. These, though, should be
moved gently, with as much muscular force used as possible, rather than the
moving of segments themselves.
16. (Q) Any further advice?
(A) These do, - and keep that mental attitude as has been indicated; not so
much the thought of self as the helpful force it may be to others in their activity.
17. We are through with this Reading.

BACKGROUND OF READING 2114-1 F 30
1/23/40 Letter from [2114]: "...Mrs. Nancy Lansdale has kindly allowed me to
secure a reading from you [on her membership]... I don't know quite how to
explain my trouble... It started almost a year ago; it seems to be nerves, but I
have a terrible fear of trains and going out by myself; as my job necessitates train
travel to ..., I live each day in constant fear that I shall have to go. When one of
these attacks comes on I feel as though I were going to leave my body and the
fear is terrible. They come on even when I am going to a familiar place, now,
whereas before they only seemed to occur when I went to a new place. ...It is
ruining health and my opportunities and I do not seem to be able to fight it. I
have tried everything I know. I have forced myself to do things but it doesn't
help. Now this feeling comes more frequently and without much apparent cause.
I'm afraid I am not being very clear about this thing, but I do ask you please to
find out what I can do to cure myself. I cannot stand this panic much longer and
feel that I am in for some kind of break-down...."

PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
TEXT OF READING 2114-1 F 30 (Artist)
This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent,
Virginia Beach, Va., this 24th day of February, 1940.
1. GC: You will have before you the body and enquiring mind of [2114], born May
18, 1909, in Johannesburg, Africa, who is now at ..., New York City. This entity
seeks information, advice and guidance in a Mental and Spiritual Reading, as to
the cause of her terrible fear of trains and going out by herself, and what she may
do to overcome it.
2. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind; the mental reactions, the
spiritual attributes and developments of the entity.
3. In giving mental and spiritual advice or counsel, it is well to consider the entity
as a whole. While the entity finds itself made up, as it were, of body, mind and
soul, each of these may function in a consciousness without the awareness of
the other.
4. Hence we find, in the experience of this entity, there are physical or material,
as well as mental and spiritual attributes, that oft attempt to function in their
individual sphere of activity through the experiences of the other. Thus the
disturbances which arise.
5. For, the effects in the physical consciousness appear as fears, inhibitions, or
doubts.
6. Hence we may say that there are pathological and psychological reactions in
the body. There are centers in a physical body through which all phases of the
entity's being coordinate with one another; as in the physical functioning there
are the pulsations, the heart beat, the lungs, the liver, and all the organs of the
body. They each have a function to perform. They each are dependent upon the
other, yet they function according to those directions of the mental self - or the
nervous systems.
7. Yet, while the brain and the cords through which the nerves function are the
channels, these are not the mental consciousness; though it is through the nerve
plasm that the nervous systems carry impulses to the various forces of the
system.
8. There are the spiritual attributes, desire, hope, will, - that function through the
organs of reproduction, as well as becoming the import or motivative force in
expression even in a material manner through the senses of the body; the eye,
the ear, the taste, the feeling.
9. All of these, then, through the lack of coordination, are at times drawn into
confusion through those reactions that reflect themselves as inhibitions and fears
in the body.
10. This not only causes a great deal of disturbance, but the lack of the ability to
concentrate, or to rest at times.
11. These naturally, in their various phases, find centers in some portions of the
physical or anatomical system through which greater expression is given than in
others.
12. In this instance we find that the glands of the body form the greater portion of
such associations or activities. And, as we have indicated heretofore, one of the
Edgar Cayce Readings copyright 1971, 1993-2012 by the Edgar Cayce Foundation
54
PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
more sensitive glands to such is the thyroid, and the activities of same in their
entirety.
13. Thus we find in this particular body, [2114], some deficiency in the activities
there. Hence at periods when, through the association of ideas or conditions or
circumstances, the body becomes overexcited and active, there are periods of
fear, trembling, and conditions in which the body will find the reactions as to the
lack of a circulation at all scarcely to the superficial, or even to the extremities.
14. These, then, need those applications that will not only bring an equal balance
to the mental but also a stabilization to the physical body.
15. First, then, know that the mind is the builder, or that phase of consciousness
which carries the impulse in the physical self, as well as the reaction of that
which the entity as a whole holds as its ideal, and reacts upon same; finding
expression through the sensory self, - as in the emotions of the body. Hence,
these must be made to coordinate the more properly; so that there may come a
spiritual assurance, that may give to the mental consciousness the assurance of
safety in itself, through the protective forces which are existent with the attributes
of its own inner self.
16. First, then, there is to be considered by the entity that it is to quietly, gently, not dependent so much upon the expressions of others, but that it is to, within the
inner self, - find that upon which it may rely for SPIRITUAL enlightenment,
spiritual affiliation and associations.
17. These, for this entity, may not be better expressed than in that as may be
found - first - in the thirtieth chapter of Deuteronomy. Read this with the
knowledge and realization, as it is assimilated (not merely read but assimilated),
that it is self that is being spoken of, as to the sources of consciousness, of
awareness, of awakening, of promise.
18. As this is assimilated, then turn to the words of Him - in the 14th, 15th, 16th,
17th chapters of St. John - for He is the truth, the light, and the light of men, whose assurance and whose promises may be so much a part of self. For He,
being the way, being the water of life, - if ye take hold upon the promises there,
they will indeed give refreshment to the mind, to the body, and that assurance to
the soul of self that He indeed is thy brother!
19. These are the mental and spiritual guidances.
20. Physically, - we would take in the system material things, in this manner:
21. Take one drop of Atomidine in half a glass of water each morning before
breakfast, for five days.
22. Leave off for two days.
23. Then take Calcios twice each day for the next five days, for this will supply to
the activities of the body that necessary assimilating force (calcium) to strengthen
the vital forces which flow through the nerve impulses themselves.
24. After this has been taken five days, then take a combination of Gold and
Soda, prepared first in this manner:
25. Add one grain Chloride of Gold to one ounce of Distilled Water. This would
be kept as one solution.
26. Add two grains of Bicarbonate of Soda to one ounce of Distilled Water. Keep
this as the other solution.

55
PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
27. Each EVENING, then, for five days, take one drop of the Gold Solution and
two drops of the Soda Solution in half a glass of water.
28. Leave off for two days.
29. And then repeat the whole series; beginning with the Atomidine for five days,
rest two days, Calcios five days, rest two days, and then the Gold and Soda for
five days, rest two days, - and so on.
30. Do these, - not merely REMEMBERING the words of the promises in the
Word of those who were given as those who should give hope and trust in the
experience of man, but realizing and experiencing these as related to self, - we
will find that by the third or fourth series of taking the properties indicated, there
will come that awareness of His presence abiding with thee.
31. And His promises are, as to thee, that He will cast out fear. And knowing the
truth will make thee free indeed, - in body, in mind, and the soul resting in Him.
32. We are through for the present.

TEXT OF READING 2403-1 F 19 (Student, Catholic Bkg, Pref Now: Unity)
This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the David E. Kahn home, 20
Woods Lane, Scarsdale, N.Y., this 17th day of November, 1940, in accordance
with request made by the self - through her stepfather, Mr. [1021].
1. GC: You will give the relation of this entity and the universe, and the universal
forces; giving the conditions that are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the
present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving time, place
and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for
the entity; giving the abilities of the entity in the present, that to which it may
attain, and how. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:
2. EC: (In going back over years from the present - " - '36 - changes - '35, '34 - "
etc., on back to birth date.)
3. Yes, we have the records here of that entity now known as or called [2403].
4. In giving the interpretations of the records as we find them here, these - as we
find - are unusual in many respects.
5. There are the abilities, the possibilities, those influences as may enable the
entity to fulfil purposes in this or that direction.
6. Hence these interpretings are chosen with the desire and purpose that we may
assist the entity in meeting in self that as may minimize the faults, magnify the
virtues. For, each soul enters with a purpose - and it is not by mere chance that
this or that experience comes in the activities of the individual. For, God is not
mocked, and whatsoever a soul soweth, that must it reap; and He is not short in
meting out to individuals those opportunities. For, He hath not willed that any
soul should perish, but hath with every temptation given a way, if the soul will rely
upon Him. For He is the strength, the power, and a very present help in trouble.
7. Forget not, then, to seek first HIS ways, and all that is necessary, all that will
bring into the experience the opportunities for the greater expression towards
fulfilling that for which a soul enters, will be the experience here and now.
8. In those influences in the activities of an entity, two - yea, three influences
become the channels through which urges arise in the experiences of an
individual entity: the environs in a material manifestation, the earthly sojourns,
and the sojourns in the astrological aspects during the interims between activities
in the material plane.
9. Thus we find each, as body, mind, soul, making for those urges that arise that
are latent or manifested in the experience of an entity. The mental, or mind, is
the way; as in spiritual aspects we find Father, Son and Holy Spirit as the three
phases; the Mind, the Son, the Way.
10. For this entity, then, we find these as astrological aspects; not because the
sun, the moon, stars or planets were in this or that position at the time of birth,
but rather because of what the individual entity has done about its opportunities it
has brought into materialization the activities in this present experience.
Edgar Cayce Readings copyright 1971, 1993-2012 by the Edgar Cayce Foundation
58
PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
11. Here we find Mercury, Venus, Neptune, Saturn, as a part of the experiences
of the entity through astrological aspects.
12. Hence one of high MENTAL abilities. Thus THINGS, conditions, are aspects
of the entity's mental and material, as well as spiritual aspects.
13. Thus we will find, though the entity is highly spiritually-MINDED, such
spirituality must be a PRACTICAL experience for the entity. Thus there will be
those influences that must not allow the practicability of material experiences to
overshadow spirituality in the experience. DO NOT become TOO materialminded.
14. In Venus we find love, beauty, art, music, those things of natures that bring
into the experience the appreciation of the beautiful. Spiritualize all; that the way
of such in the material manifestation may bring naught but harmony and peace
into the experience of the entity.
15. We find in Neptune the visions, dreams, hopes, aspirations; and things
having to do with air, water, and the elements BEYOND the realm of the earth.
Hence we will find, in the choices for companionship, or even for the close
relationships, it will be with those who deal with, or have to do with activities in
same.
16. Then, in thy activity, learn much of those individuals who are air-MINDED,
and of the activity itself.
17. In Saturn we find those unusual aspects of CHANGES bringing helpful
influences into the experience of the entity, rather than detrimental forces. This
is a benevolent aspect; though to the entity there is oft the latent and manifested
desire for conditions or experiences to remain the same, not seeking then great
changes. But fear them not, if the mental hopes, attitudes and desires are kept
in constructive directions. See in all such changes greater opportunities as
BEING through and of the mercies in a loving Father.
18. Bring into the experience JOY, gladness, the natural sources of those
influences that arise in peace, harmony and understanding.
19. These as we find are the astrological aspects that produce the effects of
changes latent through the soul forces of the entity.
20. As to the material sojourns, - these find expressions in the emotions of the
body, the longings that are a part of the entity's experience.
21. Thus, while all may not be given in the present, these as we find are those
that bring in the present activity, now, and for the next seven to fourteen years,
not only the environmental but the mental and spiritual urge also.
22. Before this the entity was in the land of the present nativity, during the early
settling in the land, in the valley of what is called the Mohawk. It was during
those periods when turmoils and strife were the occasion, by the activities of not
only the natives but those of the other lands, that were the determining factors in
the settlings of the land.
23. The entity in those activities gained, and through those influences brought
about for the peoples of the settlements, for the activities in the land, not only
harmony in music but the conservation through home economics and the
FREEDOM of activity for every phase of relationships.
Edgar Cayce Readings copyright 1971, 1993-2012 by the Edgar Cayce Foundation
59
PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
24. Thus the abilities of the entity in the present, as we will find, will be rather in
that of a career, at least in a portion of the present experience; that may be
attained the greater through music and the study and application of home
economics as combined with same. However, the greater career eventually for
the entity will be the home, and in the companionship with aviators or such as are
associated with same.
25. The name then, as we find, was Elizabeth Arson.
26. Before that the entity was in the Norse land, or in that portion of the land now
so overrun by those activities of greed and misrepresentations in the affairs of
individual experiences.
27. For, the entity was among those peoples who knew turmoils and strifes
during that experience. And but for the activities that were brought about through
many of the associates and companions of the entity - as Arden Obkiun, - there
would have been many changes in those lands during that experience.
28. Hardships were a part of the entity's experience, materially. Mentally and
spiritually the entity GAINED in the abilities to bring into the awarenesses of the
many, the needs for united effort on the part of those of ONE purpose and of
ONE mind.
29. Before that the entity was in the land now known as the Promised Land,
during the early experiences of the Master, as He walked in the earth.
30. There we find the entity was among the children blessed by Him, by those
activities in Bethsaida when there were the gatherings of the groups for the
hearing of the messages of Him, - who is the way, the truth, the light.
31. In those experiences the entity attained to great abilities in the MENTAL
activity of gathering spiritual truths, that brought into the lives of those who
followed in HIS way that of JOY - though in service; JOY - though in trial; JOY though in persecutions for a cause and for a purpose.
32. In the latter portion of the experience the entity was closely associated with
the activities and the establishings of the church in Laodicea.
33. The name then was Lascha. Throughout the experience there, the entity was
the home builder; and many of that era called the entity blessed.
34. Before that the entity was in the Egyptian land, when there were turmoils and
strifes through those activities and rebellions brought about. Yet, the entity was
among those who were constant in the relationships with those services for the
establishings of homes, of families, rather than of that as had been a portion of
the experience - that is, the state's activity in the home.
35. Thus we find the entity was a leader in the establishing of such influences in
the affairs of individuals in homes, as might bring harmony among those material
products and those who kept or tended the affairs of the home - or between
those who produced the products for the home, and those who prepared same in
the home.
36. Here again in the present we find those manifestations that are latent and
manifested from the entity's experience through that sojourn, - in the name TekLa-ium.
37. As to the abilities of the entity in the present, that to which it may attain, and
how:

PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
38. First, study to know thy ideal; not merely that things, individuals or conditions
be, but the spiritual ideal first, the mental ideal next, the material ideal thirdly and what may be thy INDIVIDUAL contribution to MAKING such practical in thy
own experience! Not how much others may do, but how much YE may do to
show others this better way.
39. As to the material activities, - prepare thyself in music, in those things having
to do with the harmonies of same; in application in home economics and those
fields that bring the greater harmonies into the experience of individuals who
would build the home - that which IS the channel through which greater
influences of every nature as of spiritual import may be made manifest.
40. Keep thyself from censure. Condemn none. Forgive as ye would be
forgiven. Learn, in deed and in truth, the great commandment; that if ye would
know the truth which would make thee free, ye must love thy fellow man as ye
would have thy Father, thy God love thee.
41. Ready for questions.
42. (Q) Is St. Lawrence College, Canton, N.Y., the proper one for me?
(A) The proper one; and there will be found MUCH in this environ that will
awaken abilities that are yet latent.
43. (Q) In what type of work should I specialize?
(A) Home economics; and music.
44. (Q) Why am I so tense?
(A) For you are so alive! But leave self more and more in that attitude of
RESTING in Him. Tenseness here, for this entity, bespeaks the vitality, the
desire to be DOING! Hence the warning, - in thy doing, do not become too
material-minded.
Remember, - let every purpose, every desire, every hope be tempered with
the spirit of truth; sowing only the seed of the spirit, - love, kindness, patience.
Those things bring into the experience not that of longfacedness, not those
forces that would hinder from finding real joy. For, remember, - He is God of
love, for He IS love. He is God of JOY, for He IS joy; a God of happiness, for He
IS happiness! And only those forces that are in the nature of fear and doubt, and
hate and jealousy and such, bring those influences that are destructive or
disappointing in the experience.
45. (Q) What type of music, - piano or some other?
(A) Piano, to be sure, is the BASIS; but the stringed instruments, to be sure,
are those fields of greater expression. Harp, guitar, violin or the like.
46. (Q) Is Unity type of spiritual endeavor?
(A) Unity is a field of endeavor. The TRUTH - as in Him - is the way! The
church is in thyself. For, thy body is the temple of the living God. THERE he
hath promised to meet thee. Hence not in an organization, not in a name, not in
a title; for there is only one Name given under heaven whereby men may be
saved, and He hath promised, "If ye love me and keep my commandments, I will
come and abide with thee."
Make that not merely a saying, that may be passed by, but - as ye are
practical - LIVE it! As ye are loving, DO it! As ye are kind, live it in EVERY way.

PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
THAT is the Christ way; and bespeaks unity of purpose with all that would do
good.
47. (Q) Why have I a great fear of the water?
(A) AIR-MINDED individuals fear water. These, as indicated, are a part of
the entity's experience. Read that as has been indicated here; you will find how
often water has brought fear into the material activities of the entity.
48. (Q) What sports am I best suited for?
(A) Those such as basket ball or other things of such natures. Hand ball,
riding, golf and the like - outdoors!
49. (Q) When I am confronted with a question, why does my mind cease to
function temporarily?
(A) Remember the warning that has first been indicated, as to doing the first
things first. Know thy IDEAL; and this will of itself be answered. As He hath
given, "If ye abide with me, fear not as to problems, or even as to what ye shall
answer; for in the selfsame HOUR it is given thee as to the choice to be made."
Let love, peace, harmony, abide with thee always. Let that prayer be ever, in thy
consciousness as ye meditate:
LORD, HERE AM I! I SEEK THY WAYS. LEAD ME AS THOU WOULD
HAVE ME GO. NOT MY WAY, LORD, BUT THINE BE DONE IN AND
THROUGH ME. NOT SACRIFICE, O GOD, BUT LOVE I OFFER TO OTHERS,
AS THOU HAST SHOWN TO ME IN HIM - THE CHRIST.
50. We are through for the present.

PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
TEXT OF READING 2428-1 F 29 (Housewife, Protestant)
This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent,
Virginia Beach, Va., this 16th day of January, 1941.
1. HLC: You will give the relation of this entity and the universe, and the universal
forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in
the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving time,
place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development
for the entity; giving the abilities of the entity in the present, that to which it may
attain, and how. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:
2. EC: (In going back over the years from the present - " - '31 - yes - changes '21 - yes, anxieties - '19 - " etc., on back to birth date.)
3. We have the records here of that entity now known as or called [2428].
4. As many who entered this cycle of 1910 and 1911, or during this cycle, the
entity is an Atlantean.
5. Thus, with the Uranian influence, the entity is at times rather the extremist.
6. We find that the entity may become a greatly developed soul, or bring turmoil
and strife to many.
7. In giving the interpretations of the records as we find them here, these are
chosen with the desire and purpose that this be a helpful influence for the entity;
enabling it to realize its opportunities in the present, and thus fill that place for
which it chose to enter this particular experience.
8. Urges and influences arise. These, as we find, come oft in very definite and
very unusual ways and manners. For, the entity itself is highly developed
mentally AND spiritually; and has periods when the emotions and desires that
arise are not understood by self, - as to whether they arise from material desire
or the ego of self, or from a deeper latent urge in which there is felt the entity has
a duty or an obligation to perform. Of what? Only a vision, only a sensing of
same is felt - at times.
9. Then the relations to the greater influences, or from which urges arise - these
are the astrological aspects; not merely because the stars or planets were in
some particular position at the time of birth. For, as the body finds self with a
body, a mind, a soul - yet these are one in manifestation - so is the universe one
creation of and for a definite purpose; that the offspring of the Creative Forces through their developments to be companions with that Force - may find those
spheres of activity through which the application of self may be made to become
one with Him.
10. Thus we find that the sojourns have their direct influence upon the entity as to
the deeper, latent urges which arise from visions, from that not capable of being
expressed in the material - and words only confuse.
11. Hence, as accredited to those environs about the earth, the sojourns there as
a part of the whole bring manners, characteristics, urges, ways of activity that
make the entity individual, or itself not as any other self.
12. In Venus we find the love of beauty, the manner of expression, the very way
in which there are the appreciations of what may be termed by some the FINER
things, - or the ability to see shades or variations in the manners in which tonal
things of any nature may be expressed; whether it be in the shading of a portrait,

or the attempt in song, or even the very manner of conducting self with its
neighbors or its companion, or its friends.
13. These become to the entity as fine points, to be sure, but make the entity a
most interesting personage to all who may come in contact with it.
14. The entity is a good conversationalist, and one that may adapt itself to most
any group, or to most any circumstance, - so long as the entity sees or feels
there is a lesson, an understanding, a thought to be gained by same.
15. Hence the entity is a good conversationalist to the extent that it should either
be in those fields of teaching, or of lecturing upon those subjects that may
become the application of self in regard to spiritual things, - when the
determination is set as to Whom ye shall worship - the self or the God in self.
16. We find in Jupiter only the emphasis upon the abilities with groups, masses,
things, - whether they be political, social, philosophical, or whatever choice the
entity may make.
17. In Uranus we find the extremes, - the interest in the unusual, the psychic, the
occult. All of these, then, only produce what may be said to be an exaggeration,
or a stress, or a special emphasis the entity may put upon any of those phases of
its experience or relationships in which it may choose to exercise itself.
18. Thus the warnings that there be the sureness in self as to what is the ideal, not merely from a religious or theosophical or theological standpoint, but
according to what is thy ideal of home, home life, friends, friendship, relationships
with individuals, and the conditions as may surround the entity; physically, yes;
mentally, to be sure; but above all spiritually.
19. For this - the ideal, as it is set - should be not as to what others should do to
make the ideal situation for self, but as to how self may apply itself in its ideal to
BRING the ideal relationships with others!
20. Also from the material or earthly sojourns we find urges that are given more
to the emotions of the body. For, as indicated in the entity's activity, the body
desires material relations; and these may be at times overshadowed by the
spiritual or the high mental concept. These, - dependent upon their use, their
application, - become the stumbling-stones or the steppingstones to spiritual
development.
21. As to the sojourns, - not all are given here, but those that have the greater
bearing upon the entity in the present. For, as from the record here, we find that
some FOURTEEN might be given, - but only four of these in the present have
their great relationships to those things or conditions which have the greater
bearing upon the present period of development.
22. Before this the entity was in the land of the present nativity, during that period
known as the American Revolution, or when there were those struggles for ideas
and ideals.
23. The entity was among the home builders in that particular period, and had a
large family of self's own children - CHOSEN, as might be said, by the entity
itself.
24. In the experience the entity gave and gave, builded and builded, towards the
materially STRONG ideals for the relationships to bring freedom of speech, of
worship, of activities in the relationships to others.
Edgar Cayce Readings copyright 1971, 1993-2012 by the Edgar Cayce Foundation
65
PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
25. Hence the entity became a teacher in those periods of the struggle, as well
as in the periods of reconstruction, - in the name Margaret Welsh.
26. The entity gained in that experience.
27. Hence in the present we find that the larger household is sought, - the
relationships with the young, the desire oft to counsel, the ability to instruct others
in ALL forms of home building.
28. The entity, then, is a good economic student.
29. Before that (that brings the urge in the present experiences of the entity) the
entity was in the English land, when there were turmoils - according to the notes
of those called historians, yet those periods when there were great progresses
made in not only the relationships of man with his companion or mate, but in the
relationships with other groups of other lands and other nations, and other
activities, - during the reign of Alfred the Great, when there were studies made
towards the unity of purpose of all.
30. Hence the entity in the present finds self INNATELY divided within itself,
almost at times to the point of feeling itself as two individuals; believing this or
believing that. These need to be united, or unified. Yet, as has been indicated,
from these experiences within, the entity may learn - and has the ability to
recognize within self the lessons gained. For, know that thy body is the temple of
the living God; there ye will find the answers to most, to all of thy questions. For
as He meets with thee, and as ye counsel with thyself, ye will find that the
comparisons are drawn from thine own ideals and thine own material longings.
31. Let not thy longings too oft become desires that are contrary to thy ideals.
32. The name then was Felice Shawnesey.
33. Before that the entity was in the Arabian and Persian land, in the "city in the
hills and the plains."
34. The entity was among those of the leader's tribe in that particular period; and
in those relationships that brought about the healing to body, to mind of many,
the entity gained much that may be applied in self in the present; by its speech,
its conversation, its activities.
35. For as ye think, so are ye within. For the fountain putteth forth not sweet and
bitter from the same source, but as ye use thy abilities to temper the thoughts of
others, let it be in patience, in love, even as ye learned through those tenets of
the teacher in that period.
36. There are the abilities of the entity to be helpful in the sick room, - the abilities
to find self entertaining others, and to find an interest in the LITTLE things that
happen in the experiences of those about the entity. These arise from the
application of self in that particular period, - in the name then Esden.
37. Before that, then, we find the entity was in the Atlantean land, when there
were those periods of determining as to WHO would be the rulers in the land, the children of the Law of One, or the sons of Belial.
38. There the entity, materially, applied self in that saying, that she "loved too
well and not too wisely." For, the persuasions, through the use of the latent
abilities that are manifested in the present experience of the entity, for selfindulgence and self-gratification, oft at and to the expense of those not so far
developed in material things, brought destructive influences to the entity.

39. The love of ease arises in the present from that; the seeking at times to know
if there are not shortcuts, - from the tendencies and activities of that particular
period of activity.
40. As to the abilities of the entity in the present, then, - that to which it may
attain, and how:
41. FIND thy ideal. Know that it is in Him. For He, the Lord, is not mocked; and
whatsoever a man soweth, that must he also reap.
42. Study to show thyself approved unto thy ideal. Condemn none. Seek the
good in all; denying none, but embracing that which is helpful and constructive in
thy experience and in thy relationships with others.
43. Ready for questions.
44. (Q) Why do I not become pregnant, and what can I do to correct the condition
of sterility?
(A) Make of thy mind, and of thy body, a channel for an ideal; not by other
than the MENTAL adoration of the beauties to be gained by such, - and the
channels of thy body may be awakened to the spiritual forces.
To be sure, from the experiences, there has been a hindrance by the very
position of the organs.
Not as a charm, but once a week at least use this:
Put a pellet of sweet gum, the size of a buckshot, in hot water and sit over
same, with the vagina exposed to same. This, - with the mental attitude, - will
have an activity upon the body. We refer to the sweet gum from the sweet gum
tree, you see.
45. (Q) Will we have any more children, or should we adopt a child?
(A) This depends upon the application of self in those directions indicated;
and this is not self alone, but in unison of purpose - as indicated - ye must learn.
46. (Q) What is the karmic link between my husband, [...], my daughter [5043],
and myself?
(A) Karmic relations are from activities together. Before this, both the
husband and daughter were close in relationship; for both were children of the
entity in that sojourn.
In the Persian experience we find there were friendships with the daughter,
and companionship with the husband.
In the Atlantean relationships, the husband was NOT a good association.
47. (Q) Should my husband continue working for the present firm or seek a
position elsewhere?
(A) For the present firm through the greater part of this present year. Then
changes may come about.
48. (Q) Why does my daughter [5043] have such a fear of water, and what can I
do to eliminate this fear?
(A) It may only be eliminated by the suggestions that may be made as the
daughter turns to sleep. MAKE the suggestions as for the usefulness of water in
the experience, else we may have indeed a barren body.
Edgar Cayce Readings copyright 1971, 1993-2012 by the Edgar Cayce Foundation
67
PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
49. (Q) What was the cause of this fear of water?
(A) It is from those experiences that brought about destruction to many, in the
former appearance. This may best be seen by paralleling the life of that entity (or
through that entity's own Life Reading, or record).
REPORTS OF READING 2428-1 F 29
3/6/51 Reply to questionnaire: "I still have a copy of my reading which I have
read about a dozen times. I read it to a friend once and with my husband once. I
have just read it again today. I feel that my reading was true because it
described feelings and thoughts which I have had and clarified these to the
extent of being a life guide. Mr. Cayce's opening statement was definitely true. '
- '31 - yes changes - '21 yes, anxieties - '
The whole reading was so complete and so much in detail that it touched on
practically every essential phase of my present life. I believe in reincarnation of
the soul because I have had experiences which have been proof, plus the fact
that I have read TIR which offers very convincing evidence. My idea of karma is
the law of cause and effect - retribution. Karmic relations are from activities
together. Since I had my Life Reading I have tried to be more helpful to others,
more patient, tolerant and kind. Because of my reading I realize that the purpose
of my life is to help others instead of demanding or expecting so much from
others.
As suggested in my reading, I have taken inventory of myself many times but
not systematically. I do not believe it necessary to set aside time for this. The
main thing is to set the right course and then stay on it. I look on my vocation as
an agency through which I can better fulfill my purpose in this life and learn the
lessons I have to learn.
I was not able to get the sweet gum but had a grand boy, July 4, 1942,
making two children in our family.
I'm very happy to say that thanks to my reading we were able to completely
eliminate my daughter's [5043]'s, fear of water. We followed the instructions one
night and the next day she was a changed child. Just loved the water after that
and is an excellent swimmer now."

BACKGROUND OF READING 2696-1 F 31
B1. Her husband came with her, having made the appointment through an
acquaintance, Mrs. [2390]: "About 2 yrs. ago, following a miscarriage, she lost
her voice. For a long time they thought she might have had a stroke. On two
occasions she was told that she had suffered two strokes, also she was told that
she had a blood clot somewhere in her head, possibly in her brain. But when
she was treated at Johns Hopkins they told her she had NOT had a stroke, and
that if she got any better to come back and tell them - they didn't know the cause
nor what to do. It might have been caused by emotional hysteria. No blood clot
was present at the time she was there."
B2. Questions submitted beforehand besides those which got answered; or
asked: "Would a fever treatment be beneficial? Would hypnotism be helpful in
this case?"
TEXT OF READING 2696-1 F 31
This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association,
Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 12th day of March, 1942.
2. EC: Yes, we have the body here, [2696].
3. As we find, there are conditions that prevent the normal physical functioning.
These are rather unusual in their nature, as the disturbances are in the nervous
forces of the body; affecting the nerves in such a manner as to cause disassociation of physical activities between the psychic and the physical body.
4. These are not of mental but of a psychic nature, - psychophonesia.
5. Then, these are the conditions as we find with this body:
6. The blood supply is low in resistance, because of the inability of the body to
properly assimilate the foods - from the condition that has been existent.
7. This is somewhat changed in the present, but the vitality and resistance low because of the natural high nervous tension through the body, though apparently
calm - is a dis-association in areas because of suppressions that have been a
part of the mental and physical experience of the body.
8. Thus, in those areas where there are the connections between the organs of
the sensory system AND the organs of the cerebrospinal system, lesions or
hindrances have formed. Thus the inability of the coordinating of the vocal cords
with the auditory AND the sensory forces that supply same.
9. This is in the 2nd and 3rd dorsal area, and in the 3rd and 5th cervical area.
10. Thus the exaggeration of impressions that reflect upon the body in its attempt
for expression in the auditory forces.
11. This accentuates the reflexes in measures to the vision as well as of hearing.
These become more acute, but they also produce an excess in the salivary gland
reaction. Thus the desire, the imagination, the activities that should be
coordinated through the flow through the medulla oblongata, or at the 1st and
2nd cervical, are at times rather distressed, or distressing to the body; save when
it becomes fully relaxed.
Edgar Cayce Readings copyright 1971, 1993-2012 by the Edgar Cayce Foundation
70
PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
12. Thus in sleep, in rest, in the greater supply of the oxygen to the blood stream
and the exhilarating effect in the spiritual AND mental escape, the expressions
become more active; the body is the more easily relaxed.
13. These as we find are the sources, the causes of the disturbances to the
body.
14. The inability of the body to retain foods, or to swallow nominally, is a reflex
from the centers in the central system as combined with the sympathetic system;
causing the cover at the oesophagus to remain open. Thus the strangular
condition that occurs at times, causing the spasmodic reaction as from any
broken association with the sympathetic nerve forces AND the central or
cerebrospinal nervous system.
15. Then, too, we find that the drain upon the system has been contributory to
the general depression, and fear - as well as the suppressions in the nervous
system by the existent condition of the short-circuiting - by the psychic, with the
mental and physical forces.
16. With the building up of the general health of the body, these conditions
should not only be released but be brought near to normalcy for this body.
17. As we find, there are two manners through which approaches must be, or
may be made.
18. One if the subjugation of the body's consciousness by one that may
overpower the mental body by suggestions to the psychic forces. But this we
would NOT suggest, save as a last resort.
19. The other we would advise; that there be the reduction of those lesions that
exist in the areas indicated; that is, through the cervical - 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th; in
the dorsal, 2nd and 3rd particularly; these reduced osteopathically, AND the
mental body released through those spiritual aspirations that may be induced
through the body-mind itself in the study of particular portions of the Scripture.
20. Not that these portions are to be merely memorized so that they may be
repeated (though do this), but meditate upon their meaning as applying to self.
See self as being spoken to in same. For, these apply to self: The 30th of
Deuteronomy, especially those verses that pertain to self and the spirit of
Creative Forces that manifests in self. Then the 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th of
John. In these see self, daily, as being spoken to.
21. Let there be this combination of applications by self; not merely as a means
of escape from material affliction - though this will come with the releasing of self
for an activity in associations with others.
22. These will bring about near to normal conditions, with these corrective forces
being made osteopathically.
23. And we would have such as Richardson make the corrections. Have these
treatments twice each week for a period of at least ten corrections, then rest from
them a period of at least two weeks; then have another series. In the latter part
of the treatments, these may be tapered off to one correction a week.
24. But DAILY read, daily meditate upon the use of the voice, of the mind, of the
activity toward BEING of material, mental and spiritual aid to others.
25. And we will bring the bettered conditions for this body.
26. Ready for questions.

71
PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
27. (Q) Please outline general diet.
(A) Drink all the citrus fruit juices the body can. Sip these often during the
day. Use plenty of whole grain cereals, well cooked. Have fish when practical.
And, at least take a tablespoonful of beef juice each day, but sip only a small
quantity at a time. Take, say, a teaspoonful every three hours, but take at least a
minute to assimilate that amount. Let it assimilate in the mouth; do not attempt to
swallow it, but - as it were - let it drift, or naturally cause the body to swallow by
its association with the salivary fluids.
Keep the eliminations well, by the taking of figs, raisins and such - well
cooked - of evening.
These would be the general outline. Vegetables, to be sure, when practical.
28. (Q) Any exercise that would help it?
(A) Stay in the open and close to nature as much as possible.
29. (Q) Please advise how the problem of eating can be simplified? Is it possible
for her to eat sitting up? If so, how?
(A) As has been indicated, this will gradually change as there is the
RELEASING of those tensions that cause the mouth of the oesophagus to
become more normal, see?
30. (Q) Was this condition originally caused by a stroke or by emotional hysteria?
(A) As indicated, emotional hysteria - as it arises from the PSYCHIC force of
the body; PRODUCING a pathological condition, affecting those areas as
indicated.
It is NOT mental.
Do these things, to be sure, as has been indicated.
The condition might be corrected almost instantly by the use of hypnosis, or
by a series of some three or four such treatments; yet that overcoming that is
necessary in the karmic influence of the body would NOT be met. Hence we
would use the hypnosis method only as a last resort.
But, we find that it can be met in the manner here outlined, if there is that
study, that prayer which will naturally arise by the meditations upon those
portions of the promises of Creative Forces; for it will be met in Him.
For, all healing comes from the one source. And whether there is the
application of foods, exercise, medicine, or even the knife, - it is to bring the
consciousness of the forces within the body that aid in reproducing themselves, the awareness of creative or God forces.
31. We are through for the present.

PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
TEXT OF READING 2825-1 F 54
This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association,
Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 5th day of October, 1942.
2. EC: Yes, we have the body here, [2825].
3. As we find, there are disturbances that prevent the better physical functioning
of the body.
4. That the disturbances have not produced a greater unbalanced condition is
unusual - owing to the nature of the disturbance and the portions of the body as
we find affected.
5. The causes, as we find, arise primarily from pressures existent in the nervous
system. These have arisen from outside pressures, or from accidents. The
pressure is upon those areas of the upper cervical, or through the cervical, - 2nd
and 3rd, 4th and 5th, - and in the coccyx area. While these in the present are not
causing any disfigurement in the body, in their activity, they eventually will, as
well as affecting the mental forces of the body, - unless corrective measures are
taken.
6. And these should be done mechanically (that is, osteopathically); but not all be
attempted at once. First gently relax the body with preferably wet heat, or oil
heat, or oil packs with heat. This would be done especially in the area of the
cervicals and in the lumbar and coccyx area. These are subluxations, and lesions
vary - those in the cervical being of the lateral nature, and those in the coccyx
and lumbar of the circular nature. Thus through the areas these press upon the
nerves and produce tiredness; while those in the cervical area are of such a
nature to produce fear - especially of being alone, or of the dark, or of heights, or
of those things that become as fearful experiences for individuals.
7. These produce, of course, that in the system which causes an extra amount of
acidity. Or the lack of proper circulation leaves excesses so the body finds its
complexion mottled, pains in extremities and through the torso at times.
8. As we find, in making corrections (and we would have these done
osteopathically), we would first relax the body with the application of oil packs, before there is the attempt to make adjustments. Saturate heavy flannel or
toweling with an equal mixture of Olive oil and Peanut Oil, heated, and apply to
the areas indicated that need the relaxation. Do this each time before the
adjustments are made osteopathically, see?
9. There should be the osteopathic treatments about twice a week, and some
three to four of these should be given only to relax the body at first, see, - before
there is the attempt to make adjustments.
10. After the first four treatments for relaxing the body, there should then be
given ten or twelve such adjustments - in the first series, see?
11. Then have a rest period from these for at least three weeks; and then have
another series of ten adjustments.
Edgar Cayce Readings copyright 1971, 1993-2012 by the Edgar Cayce Foundation
74
PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
12. After the first series of treatments, it would be well to take a very low
electrical vibration. The Radio-Active Appliance would be well for this body, but
not until the first series of say ten or twelve adjustments have been made; this
not including the first four for relaxation, see? Then take the Radio-Active for at
least three weeks.
13. And we should find, with normal activity, with the normal expression of self,
the body should be MUCH improved.
14. Ready for questions.
15. (Q) Is there any sinus trouble?
(A) There is a reflex condition of this nature, as we find, but most of this will
disappear when these adjustments and heat treatments are applied. When the
oil packs are applied, of course apply the electric pad to keep same warm, so as
to relax the body thoroughly before the adjustments are made.
16. (Q) What causes trouble with kidney and bladder?
(A) Pressure on the nerves to same, and the general nervous reflex from the
nerve pressures in body. These, too, will improve greatly.
Occasionally, about twice a week, take internally about two ounces of
Watermelon Seed Tea. Prepare this by pouring four ounces of boiling water on a
tablespoonful of watermelon seed that have been crushed, and allowing to steep
as tea. Strain and drink this, about twice a week, throughout the whole period
these treatments are being taken.
17. (Q) Have had to sit up in bed when I sleep (A) (Interrupting) This is from the nerve forces, and should disappear very
soon after the beginning, even, of these treatments.
Do those things indicated, and we will bring better influences and forces for
this body.
18. We are through for the present.

BACKGROUND OF READING 3061-1 F 38
B1. 4/9/43 [3061]'s letter:
Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Va.,
My Dear Mr. Cayce,
For over three years I have been more or less isolated from my former
participation in an active enjoyment of social contacts. I have suffered from the
pains which seem to come from a spinal curvature, plus what has variously been
termed a "nervous break-down," menopause, malnutrition, and even some type
of infantile. After many months in bed I attempted to fight my way back to
normalcy, but had developed a tendency to have a "complex" about being in the
company of my friends, dreading callers and finding it almost an impossibility to
walk out of sight of my home, as I have a horrible physical experience each time I
have attempted these things. I have had many doctors, including orthopedic
men, psychiatrists and Christian Science practitioners. I am not bed-ridden, but
am active with many hobbies at home such as gardening, music, painting,
photography and development and tinting work, and work for the Red Cross
which I can do at home.
My husband [...] is on active sea duty, and it would be a great relief to him to
know that I am once more able to be without fear, and restored to my natural
state of self reliance, as I have to call upon others to stay with me when he is
away.
B2. 6/1/43 [3061]'s letter:
Dear Mr. Cayce,
My list of questions is as follows:
(1) What causes the nervous sense of fright and how can it be overcome?
(2) What causes the tension in neck and dizziness? (3) What causes sharp pain
under the rib area? (4) Can the spine be helped? How? (5) What about diet? (6)
Why am I so frightened and apprehensive all the time, so that I fear company
and yet fear to be alone?
Thank you for your service to me, and with best wishes for the continuance of
your great work, I remain Sincerely yours, [3061]
TEXT OF READING 3061-1 F 38
This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association,
Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 23rd day of June 1943.
2. EC: Yes - we have the body here.
3. As we find, there is rather the combination of conditions causing the
disturbance and upsetting in the mental as well as the physical reactions of the
body.
4. These, as will be seen, more oft than otherwise cause unexpected anxieties in
the body, owing to the very nature of the structural body, as well as the manner
in which the body has applied its abilities to raise the kundaline forces in prayer
or meditation.

PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
5. Thus the fears that arise from same, because of a disturbance in the structural
portions - in the lower areas of the cerebrospinal system.
6. These affect also sympathetically the ganglia along the sympathetic nerve
forces AND the cerebrospinal in the areas along the spinal cord, - as indicated in
the lower lumbars and sacral area. And this affects in its reaction not only the
lower portion of the torso but the locomotion also.
7. And these continue to be warring factors between the mental (or the training
abilities of the present entity) and the physical condition that has been and is a
part of this present physical experience.
8. For, in some times back, with this form of distortion that came to the
cerebrospinal system, there has been the use of same in those ways and
manners that have gradually prolonged the activity of the ganglia, as to bring
periods of distress or disturbance to the body.
9. Then, with the application of its studies - or of those things in which the mental
forces have been builded, with these combative forces, - there are the periods of
anxiety, which are a part of the whole physical forces, as well as the general
conditions of the sympathetic body.
10. Thus a great deal of distorted reaction is caused at times, making the
activities of the body passe', or so confined to just certain activities.
11. These, as we find, may be materially aided - in relieving disturbances here.
12. Of course, these have many more reflex effects upon the central nervous
forces, or functioning of the central nerves and blood supply, as well as
sympathetically upon the organs of the sensory forces of the body.
13. Then, in making applications for helpful forces:
14. First we would begin with applying Glyco-Thymoline Packs daily (for at least
ten days or two weeks) over the area where the spinal cord, or column, gives a
great deal of reaction to the activities along these lines, as well as its general
expression of things unusual. These the body will find, will add to the betterment
of the body in the study and analysis of same. Physically apply these Packs
daily over the area where there is distress. Make long Packs - several
thicknesses of gauze well saturated with Glyco-Thymoline; acting as an alkalizing
antiseptic, as well as being absorbed in the muscular tendons and lymph
circulation so as to alkalize and eliminate.
15. The anxieties through the mental should be controlled, first, by the mental
body. This may best be done by defining, or confining self to, some particular
form of ideal - and following through with that.
16. From these sources, we would give for the body - not merely analyze or
study these portions of the scripture, but apply to self the ideal presentation of
what spirit, mental body and physical body represent in the world, as found in the
30th of Deuteronomy, and the 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th of John. Hold to these
principles, and we will see why there may be fear created by the mental body
becoming so absorbed in physical disturbances, or so absorbed in things of self
as to become fearful of all other things outside of itself.

78
PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
17. In the physical, - do have occasionally the relaxing osteopathic adjustments.
We would preferably have these made by Dr. McLean in Scarsdale. These
should be relaxing treatments, rather than stimulating treatments; being mindful
as to conditions as will be seen that come along certain areas in the spine, as
indicated, where structural portions have become involved.
18. But these should be corrected with the use of the Glyco-Thymoline Packs,
with the osteopathic adjustments, and with care as to exercise.
19. Also we would have sufficient quantities of A and D as the vital energizing
forces and foods for structural body, flesh and blood structural body as to the
bone and sinew, and as to the mental attitudes.
20. For, as indicated in the scripture given, it is dependent upon the attitude of
the individual as to what is to be the ideal of the entity.
21. But this do, and in the diet do add often beets and beet tops. These will aid
in so purifying the blood stream that there may be at least the hindering of the
spreading of those activities in the structural body itself.
22. Do that.
23. Ready for questions.
24. (Q) What causes the tension in neck and dizziness?
(A) This is the attempt of the reflex, or coordination; or because of the
incoordination between sympathetic and cerebrospinal system, from the solar
plexus and hypogastric plexus, as well as that plexus controlling head and neck that is, between cerebrospinal and sympathetic.
25. (Q) Should the Glyco-Thymoline Packs be applied in the neck area also?
(A) In the neck area, and then particularly along those areas of the sacral,
1st, 2nd and 3rd and 4th lumbar, 9th dorsal, and particularly in the areas of the
5th and 6th dorsal to the base of the brain. These would remain on for about an
hour each day, but do it every day for about two weeks before there are the
adjustments begun mechanically (osteopathically).
26. (Q) What causes sharp pain under the rib area?
(A) Remember, most of the organs of the sensory system cooperate through
the perspiratory and respiratory system, or the imaginative body as well as the
factual body - or the anatomical body. Thus we have those affections, this
superacidity, in those areas where inflammation has allowed such to occur about
the pleura.
The application of those properties indicated should enable the body to
eradicate most of this through absorption, and then by the methods of the
hydrotherapy - including light sweats, and the cold and then hot waters, or vice
versa.
27. (Q) Can the spine be helped in this way?
(A) As indicated, it may be retarded - or the condition may be prevented
entirely from giving further trouble; though it is as yet, continuously, an
aggravating, growing condition.

79
PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
28. (Q) Why am I so frightened and apprehensive all the time, so that I fear
company and yet fear to be alone?
(A) This, as indicated, is because of the manner in which the entity has held
to those ideas and ideals as related to the activity of the spinal cord and its
relationships to the activities of individual souls or entities.
29. (Q) Any other advice?
(A) Do these, as we find, if we would bring the best condition for this body.
30. We are through with this Reading.
REPORTS OF READING 3061-1 F 38
R1. 7/14/43 [3061]'s letter:
My dear Mr. Cayce,
Thank you very much for the copies of your reading for me. I received them
recently, and have begun the daily compresses as you advised. I shall get in
touch with Dr. McLean as soon as the time is expedient.
I read in a recent bulletin from the Association that your time is taken up for the
rest of the year. I am sorry if that is true, as I am most anxious to have a reading
for my daughter, of whom I wrote you in my first letter to you. She is no better
and is a constant source of anxiety to [...] and myself. I really would like to have
both a Physical and a Life reading for her, as I believe it would increase her
chances of happiness to know her destiny; but at present, her health is the main
consideration.
If there is any chance of your being able to give her an appointment would you
let me know and I shall be glad to mail a check as soon as it is verified.
I do not understand some of the things you said in my reading, about the
scriptural application, but I read and re-read the passages referred to in hopes
that some understanding will come to me.
Thank you again for your help, and with best wishes for you and the work you
are doing, I remain,
Very truly yours, [3061]

This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at Phillips Hotel, Room 115, Dayton,
Ohio, this 23rd day of January, 1924.
(Life Reading Suggestion)
1. EC: We find the soul and spirit forces complete the physical entity in the early
of the morn, and that there are many influences in the life of this entity. This we
find an exceptional one, and the way as marked before this entity from the
astronomical conditions will influence the entity's developing in a very marked
way, provided the will does not carry the forces into improper channels.

PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
2. One we find whose greatest influences are from that plane from which the soul
and spirit forces took its last forces; that of Venus with the influence of Jupiter
and of Mercury. The conditions that have to do with the constellations and the
signs under which these give strength are in the mental, with the ennobling and
upbuilding forces as of Jupiter. The afflictions come under those of Mars and
Neptune. Hence the fear that will ever be in the entity's inmost thoughts
respective to war or flood tides.
3. In the forces as to the building, we find as this:
4. One given to the love of group, yet one who is rather the leader of such
groups.
5. One given to many affairs of the heart, and over many influences that this
gives and brings, or as brought by such in the influence, the will must be exerted
to keep in the way that leads to the developing of the force in the entity.
6. One given to study all phases of the human body. One that will do well in that
profession of the doctor. One that would find strength in giving the relief to
others through that other than of the earth forces. One that with the will, will be
able to give strength, relief, both in body and mind to many others.
7. One that with the petty things of life has little to do. One with the broader
scope and the higher vision. One that will do well to keep the idealistic forces in
self-development, for with the afflictions as come under those of Mars and
Neptune will find the influence, without will, breaking, as it were, the idealistic
forces that must be ever kept before, would this entity develop either physically,
mentally, spiritually or materially.
8. One that is given to the frivolous, yet not in the petty ways, but rather the
enlivening.
9. One given to sensation and the experiences as found through incentives of the
natures as exhibited in forces of Venus.
10. One that will bring much joy in the life of the home, were it joined with those
coming especially under the influence of the same forces, and ESPECIALLY
those born in latter days of January, June or November.
11. The elements that appear in the personalities as present exhibited, we find as
these:
12. Before this we find the forces as were under those in the Court Physician of
Louis the 15th, and the turn towards the Jester of the higher type, expressed in
the present individuality and shown in the personality.
13. In that before we find in the land of the Greeks, when the forces were in the
building of the Philosophy of the then known world, and this gives the reasoning
forces of the present entity, and the acceptance of those that especially give
sensation to the conscious forces of the body. This name we find in history.
That of Toabias, [Tobias?].
14. Before this in the land of the Eastern forces, and was then in that country
now known as Mongolia. From that we get the influence as is brought in the
present in the love of the outdoor, with the beautiful nature surroundings. Yulee,
the name then.

B1. 10/2/43 Letter: "Ever since I was a boy, I have been afflicted with a stage
fright complex. Psychiatrists say I was shocked badly when real young, and that
if the situation could be recalled it would help to dissolve my trouble. This fear
has come to bother me in many other ways. Perhaps a reading might help solve
the trouble. I also have T.B., and am in doubt as to what course to pursue as a
means to recovery. X-ray pictures show a very bad spinal condition between my
shoulder blades. Would straightening the spine help, as some doctors say?
Whatever your fee, I will gladly pay what you ask, for a reading about my stage
fright and fear complex, and also my T.B. condition... P.S. The fear complex has
been the bane of my whole life."
B2. 10/27/43 Letter: "I have suffered from a deep-rooted fear complex nearly all
my life. This has also been confirmed by a prominent psychiatrist... P.S. I have
suffered constant fear a great deal of the time and am naturally very anxious for
an early reading. I don't want to be selfish, though."
B3. 5/3/44 Letter: "A few months ago, I sent for a reading indicating on
application that I wanted a mental and spiritual reading. I have been afflicted
with a deep-seated chronic disease for years now, and because I considered a
mental complex as the most contributing cause of my illness, I thought it best to
get at that first. However, since my application for a reading, I have changed my
mind somewhat, due to physical changes and also the reading of your monthly
letters, etc. [WRE]. My physical condition demands attention, and I am more or

less confounded as to just what treatment I should receive. Therefore, I think my
reading should be changed from mental and spiritual to physical. Important
questions confronting my mind are: (1) Medical treatment? (2) Diet? (3)
Exercise and rest. Is absolute rest in bed necessary?... If it were possible, I
would have an additional reading which might uncover the origin of my mental
fear complex which a prominent psychiatrist told me was due to a forgotten
emotional experience when I was quite young. According to him, if this
experience would be recalled from my subconscious mind, it would dissolve my
fear complex. I have often wondered if Mr. Cayce could trace a forgotten
experience of this type through his work. I would gladly make such an
application at once, but I suppose his readings are so far ahead that this would
be almost impossible... May God bless your efforts and keep your organization
dedicated to the highest and most unselfish purpose in serving mankind for all
time."
TEXT OF READING 5123-1 M 41 (Musician, Theosophist)
This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association,
Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 19th day of May, 1944.
2. EC: Yes. As we find, from long standing conditions the body is itself's own
enemy. These are conditions where lack of control of the emotions, and the
activity of organs through the body by those drainages from the system of the
vitality that goes to make for regeneration and the activity in the body, has
gradually brought on a complication of disorders through the mental reactions
and the physical conditions.
3. Weakness in the general vitality of the body, lack of stability in the purposes or
desires of the body; all of these become a part of the general conditions.
4. As we find, first there must be, if there would be helpful forces for this body,
the changes of the mental attitude toward self, toward general surroundings.
There must be the holding to some general creative energies, for the body will
gain much more by trying and in helping someone else, rather than pitying or
excusing or condemning things in others.
5. That should be the first general change, or attitude of the body, if there would
be any permanent help.
6. For those disturbances in self which cause drainages must be eliminated by
trying to do something, either mentally or physically, for someone else.
7. Then, we would commence with the deep therapy treatments given with the
deep therapy electrical machines. These should be those that control the
activities through the solar plexus, as well as the general reactions through the
body. We would have these treatments about once a week, while twice a week
we would have osteopathic treatments.
8. As to diet: We would have more raw vegetables, as well as a very mild meat;
such as fish, fowl and lamb, and none of them fried; rather broiled, baked or the
like would be better way of preparation.

9. If these suggestions are kept up, we will find there will soon grow sufficient
strength for the body not to remain in bed through necessity, but will have
strength and may be in the open air and active with its hands and mind toward
some creative activity.
10. Ready for questions.
11. (Q) What is the cause of my mental fear, and how may I overcome it?
(A) As has been indicated, the draining of drosses in the system from selfindulgence, and if there is the replacing of such with study, and the applying of
self in the physical and mental towards helping others, we can dismiss this fear
and tension in body and build up through the activities as have been given.
12. We are through with this body.

PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
1. EC: Yes, we have the body here, [5578]. Now, we find there are abnormal
conditions with this body. These are hidden in a manner, and are an interesting
study from psychological and pathological conditions as come about in the
variation of the effects as are produced by conditions that have not been easily
understood, and dissension and discussion has often arisen as respecting that
as produces same. MOST interesting for this body would have been the
experiences as produced same in the ENTITY'S experience. We deal with those
in the present.
2. As is seen, the effect is almost diametrically opposed to what is ordinarily seen
in effects upon a physical body; in that light, exposure, or any outside influence
apparently produces a wreck to the whole system. This is a psychological
condition, which is not easily understood, from even its name.
3. The effect, or effects as produced then in the system, are produced by the
conditions - as such conditions as light, heat, exercise, either mental or physical,
produce upon the GLANDS of the body, and the effect is ESPECIALLY seen in
the condition as is produced IN the lymphatic circulation, or to the exterior
portions of the body; yet entirely different FROM that as has been classed as a
CONDITION as is peculiarly affected BY such exposure.
4. The conditions then, as we find, are NOMINAL to a body in the age, or in the
conditions as go about for a GENERAL PHYSICAL make-up; yet the spells or the
conditions as arise are produced by the variation in the vibratory forces as are
set up in a life-giving cellular force, as is manifested in this body, [5578] we are
speaking of. Life in itself - VIBRATION. Life as is produced, is, from the physical
standpoint, that of the uniting of forces as generate in themselves cellular units
able and capable of taking energy from the various foods and surroundings as in
which the body finds itself, creating for same within self that ability to propagate,
not only its own self and species, but to give life itself in the activities of the body.
In this particular body we find the glands are so affected, by the variation in the
various forms of vibration as may be created in system, that by light, by
association, by physical exertion - any of these conditions may be produced, or
may produce the condition as is exhibited in the exterior portion, as well as in the
general debilitation brought on in that after effect of same. The glands, then,
affected, are PRINCIPALLY those of the thyroid, thymus, adrenal, and that
especially of the gland [pineal?] as goes throughout the whole system, affecting
especially the sympathetic nerve system, creating the change in the effect of all
energy in the system, either to a destructive or a constructive force, dependent
upon the vibration as is set by that in which the body contacts same.
5. Now, to meet the needs, then, of these conditions for THIS body, we would
first apply - in a normal, nominal, easy manner - where the body may rest, in
pleasant surroundings - those vibrations as would be found in that of the RadioActive Appliance - NORMAL one - creating a different vibration for the body.
First attach to the ankle, then to the wrist. After this has been used each day
thirty minutes, for one cycle of twenty-eight days - remembering we must keep
the cycles of the vibratory forces of the psychological effects as this produces in
system, in the variations as are brought about by the changes as come to the
body itself - then after one cycle of such vibration, CHANGE the vibration, then,

PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
that we centralize same through that of the active force in the lyden gland*
[Leydig gland], or the creating of energy through same, which is of a reproduction
force in the body - with the ability to add to the system that as creates the energy
in each cellular force of the body, as to create WITHIN itself that necessary for
the engendering of life in its own cellular force.
6. THEN, we would add that vibration through the same forces of the RadioActive Appliance, but add the Chloride of Gold to the body through same. This,
then, should be kept for at least TWO cycles, or for the fifty-six days, and one
hour each day.
* [Extract from 3997-1 - Lyden gland - Lyden meaning sealed; that gland from
which gestation takes place when a body is created through coercion, or
inception, through conception of two bodies meeting in creating a body. Located
in and above the gland called genital glands. In the male, above the glands
corresponding to testes. In the female, that above gland responding to testes in
the male. Here: The basis or seat of the soul is in the Lyden Gland.]
7. After the third of such vibrations, with THIS change, are given - then begin with
the manipulations, as will produce FOR the body the ability of both the muscular
and of the nerve tissue throughout the whole of the nerve system, both cerebrospinal and sympathetic, the ability of the body in itself to engender that vibration
as created by same. Not deep manipulations, but that that produces a
sympathetic force for the body.
8. Do that, and we will find a great change will come for this body of [5578].
Ready for questions.
9. (Q) When the Gold is added, how should the Radio-Active battery be
attached?
(A) To the base of brain and to the umbilicus. The vibrations from same then
work directly through the medulla oblongata and the active forces of the brain
itself, that generates for the system nerve impulse, as created by cellular force.
The amount of the Gold is that proportion of one grain to one ounce of
DISTILLED water, see?
The manipulations for the vibrations created are to produce the stimulation
from each nerve plexus, that of the ABILITY, see - by gentle usage, see - that
ability to ASSIMILATE the vibration created.
10. (Q) Should the manipulations be given osteopathically?
(A) Just given, osteopathically.
11. (Q) What will relieve the body now when exposed to the sun?
(A) We must change the vibrations if we would have the PERMANENT relief
for the body. What will relieve at the present time? An over dose of Gold! but
that wouldn't be well for the body. Begin as we have outlined, if we would bring
the better conditions for this body, of [5578]; for we must create in this body that
of the engendered force to be able to overcome those incentives for the inner
being, or the entity itself in past experience. We are through for the present.

Ideals Exercise
An ideal is a standard by which one lives. "The ideal gives us a sense of
stability, guidance and orientation, as well as a criterion for judgments." (Puryear
& Thurston, 1987, p. 95)
"An ideal is not a goal. It is a motivational standard by which to evaluate our
goals and our reasons for pursuing those goals. The goal is what; the ideal is
why! A spiritual ideal is not so much a goal toward which we move as it is the
spirit in which we grow. It is a living and dynamic standard by which we quicken
and measure our daily motivation." (Puryear, 1982, p. 112)
The readings frequently suggest an ideals exercise designed to examine and
modify dysfunctional attitudes and behaviors based upon spiritual
considerations. This exercise consists of writing down one's ideals on paper.
The process involves making three columns headed: SPIRITUAL, MENTAL AND
PHYSICAL and listing words under each which signify the meaning of each
category. The spiritual ideal is a person or concept which conveys the highest
sense of purpose or meaning to which one may ascribe. The mental ideal is the
mental attitude which is consistent with the spiritual ideal. The physical ideal is
the behavior or physical manifestation of the spiritual ideal. Thus, the holistic
perspective is maintained by the coordinating of physical, mental and spiritual
ideals.
The technique is cognitive-behavioral since it brings to awareness the
attitudes and beliefs upon which a person is operating and links the mental
dimension to concrete behaviors. The mental and physical ideals are modified to
be consistent with the spiritual ideal. The difference between this technique and
many contemporary cognitive-behavioral models is the role of the spiritual ideal
as the standard for mental and physical processes. The Cayce readings do not
advocate a "value-free" approach to healing. However, the values are not to be
imposed by an outside agency - each person must work through the process on
one's own to find one's own balance.
The readings state that ideals will change as one progresses through life.
Therefore, the ideals exercise is an ongoing process of reorientation. It may be
viewed as a tool for maintaining balance and integration at all phases of one's
life.
The use of ideals has important clinical implications. Persons who have high
spiritual ideals, but whose mental attitudes and physical behaviors fall short of
these spiritual ideals, may be prone to self-condemnation for failing to live up to
their own standards. Or, they may project their perceived shortcomings onto
others. Self-blame or blaming of others is likely to lead to psychological and/or
interpersonal problems. On the other hand, a person with low spiritual ideals (or
the complete absence of them) may find life meaningless, boring and empty.
An obvious benefit of this exercise is its potential for focusing on beliefs which
have been unconsciously adopted during childhood and adolescence. The
insistence that the ideals be written down and reviewed regularly is critical in this
respect.

Excerpts on the Ideals Exercise from the Cayce Readings
While those [therapeutic] administrations as have been and as are being
given, will be and are effective in a physical manner, they only are of a temporary
or of a putting off of conditions - unless the mental attitude, the nerve and the
resultant expressions of same - through impulses to the physical organisms - are
stimulated or brought - through the mental body, and through the physical forces
- to near a coordination in system, the conditions cannot remain in a normal state
though only physically corrected!
... take more time to be holy in thought, in the expression of same. To forgive
and not forget is to burden self physically and mentally. To retain suppressions,
through grudges, or discontent, is to build for a mental inability of control of self
through an ideal that may attempt to be held before self in the mental and
spiritual applications of growth. In this direction the body should take thought,
not of self so much as of the expression of self's, through self's own application
of the ideal held, as it may reflect in the lives of others ... for when we correct that
disturbance mentally, those depressions and improper impulses physically and
nervously, and change the vibratory forces in system - we may have a nearer
normal body.
Keep the mind pure, and hold to an ideal, working or living better in a
manifestation of that ideal. (272-1)
If that towards ideas are in keeping with the ideals, follow those. Have ideals,
not ideas! Ideas may be as thoughts, made criminal or miracles. Be sure the
ideal is proper. Follow that irrespective of outside influence. Know self is right,
and then go straight ahead. So live each and every day that you may look any
man in the face and tell him to go to hell! (1739-6)
Q. Is my attitude toward life conducive to good health?
A. The condition of the physical body is not conducive to an attitude towards
constructive thinking!
There must be, naturally, innate, a coordination of the body, mind and soul, which is a necessary force.
The body finds itself body, mind, soul, - these are influences that are active
within the experience. And only that which is constructive or creative CAN be
everlasting.
These bring, then, with those thoughts, those activities, constructive forces into
the experience.
Do that.
Q. In regard to my spiritual life, what do I need to feed my nature, and how may I
get it?
A. Analyze self and the purposes, the motives, the influences; and know that
they agree with that which is thy ideal. What is thy ideal? spiritually, mentally,
physically? Not what you would wish God to do for you, but what may you do in
appreciation of the love shown?

Not as to what ye would like to be, but what may ye mentally give that will be
conducive to constructive thinking in the experience of others?
In the physical, not what you want others to do for you, but what may you do
for them?
These are what we mean by constructive thinking, and as they are applied
within the experience we will come to see what a spiritual life means. Not the
eliminating of pleasures, for the purpose of life IS pleasure, but that which is
constructive and not destructive!
Q. How can I make my husband see this complete spiritual life and also have it!
A. Live it in self, and thus you may induce others and those about you to try it.
Not by nagging, not by finding fault. Ye would not want others to find fault with
you! Then live so toward others that you do not find fault, but find the good in
every experience. (1995-1)
...ideals are not your mind - ideals are principles acted upon by the mind. (2533-6)
No soul enters by chance, but that it may fill that it has sought and does seek
as its ideal. Hence, as may be the first injunction to this entity: Do not too oft
accept what others say, unless it answers to a something deep within self.
Do not, then, merely have a verbal or vocal ideal. Do write what is thy ideal.
Begin with that under these three headings: Spiritual, Mental, Material. And write
what is thine own ideal. As ye find, these may change from time to time. For,
each soul grows in grace, in knowledge, in understanding. Just as the
awareness, the unfoldments come to the self as the entity applies that it has
chosen and does choose from day to day. (3051-2)
Q. What do I do that is wrong?
A. Who made us a judge over thee or anyone else? What are thy ideals?
Parallel thy activities with thine ideals, not merely in mind but put it on paper so
that you may study and take a lesson from same. (3249-1)
First the entity should study well the ideals and purposes of self as related to
the entity as a whole ...
For, mental and spiritual guidance should be related to what an individual
entity chooses as its ideal, and what it will or should do about that ideal, not ideas
but ideals.
In choosing and in analyzing self and the ideal, do not merely carry these in
mind but put them, as it were, upon a paper in a manifested form. Write
PHYSICAL. Draw a line, write MENTAL. Draw a line, write SPIRITUAL.
Put under each, beginning with the spiritual (for all that is in mind must first
come from a spiritual concept), what is thy spiritual concept of the ideas, whether
it be Jesus, Buddha, mind, material, God or whatever is the word which indicates
to self the ideals spiritual.
Then under the MENTAL heading, write the ideal mental attitude, as may arise
from concepts of the spiritual, relationship to self, to home, to friends, to
neighbors, to thy enemies, to things, to conditions....

What is the ideal material, then? Not of conditions, but what has brought,
what does bring into manifestation the spiritual and mental ideals? What
relationships does such bring to things, to individuals, to situations?
Thus an individual entity analyzes itself.
Then set about to apply the knowledge ye have attained, for ye will get ideas
and that ideal. Ye may change them from period to period, as ye study them
over. For as ye apply them they become thy ideals. To be just as theories they
do not belong to thee, they are still theories so far as thy personal being is
concerned. It's the application of same that counts. What do they bring into
thine experience? These are well if ye will apply them. (5091-3)
Do first set the ideal. This isn't the easiest job, either. Not merely saying,
"Yes, I believe this," and "Yes, I believe that." Put it upon paper. Draw lines. Put
headings: "My spiritual ideal"; what is it? "My mental ideal," as to how the time
should be spent in recreation, in study, in work, in social activity, in the various
activities necessary for an individual to be well rounded. The ideal way is not,
"Well, I can't do this," but the ideal way and work towards it. Then, "My ideal
physical." What sort of a church would that church be if every member was just
like yourself? What would it look like? What sort of home life would there be, if
every husband was just like yourself? What is the ideal attitude of a husband, of
a father? What is the ideal attitude of a neighbor? of a rancher? or a brother? of
those political or social activities? Set them down under each of the three
headings. See what they look like. You will rub them out many times ... (5400-1)

NUTRITION & HEALING
Cover story Interview with Mary Nash Stoddard, founder of the Aspartame Consumer
Safety Network and author of a source book about the sweetener, aspartame.
[Dr. Jonathan V. Wright's NUTRITION & HEALING with Alan R. Gaby, M.D., November
1995 - Vol. 2, Issue 11. Pub. by Nutrition & Healing, Inc., Phoenix, AZ.]
Q: Your important consumer education work on the sweetener "aspartame" is well known
and we are delighted to speak to you. Is it true that the large majority of non-drug
complaints to the Food and Drug Administration are about adverse reactions to
aspartame, also called NutraSweet or Equal?
A: Currently, it's about 78% of all complaints. At one time, the figure was 85%! Yet, this
isn't reported in the newspapers or announced through other media. It's a well-hidden
secret.
Q: Imagine if it were a vitamin or herbal product, we'd have the federal pill police swarming
like angry bees. Would you please list for us some of the symptoms caused by
aspartame?
A: Aspartame not only causes individual symptoms, it can mimic entire syndromes! For
example, the CFIDS (chronic fatigue and immune deficiency syndrome) newsletter calls it
the "sweet poison, NutraSweet," because it can mimic the symptoms of CFIDS. It can also
cause grand mal seizures. According to H.J. Roberts, M.D., it can cause decreased vision,
pain in the eyes, decreased tears, ringing in the ears, hearing impairment, headache,
dizziness and unsteadiness, confusion, memory loss, drowsiness, sleepiness, slurring of
speech, numbness and tingling, tremors, depression, irritability, aggression, anxiety,
insomnia, phobias, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, high blood pressure, nausea,
diarrhea, abdominal pain, itching, hives, menstrual changes, weight gain, hair thinning and
hair loss, urinary burning and frequency, excessive thirst, fluid retention, bloating,
increased infection, and even death.
Q: Death?
A: Five deaths reported prior to 1987. We don't know the number since then.
Q: What's in this stuff?
A: Among other things, it's about 10% methanol (wood alcohol,) famous for causing
blindness in alcoholics. In the body, methanol metabolizes into formaldehyde, a
neurotoxin; formic acid, a venom in ant stings; and diketopiperazine, which causes brain
tumors in animals. It's so bad that in July of 1983, the National Soft Drink Association
presented official objections to putting aspartame in beverages. I'll read you one of their
objections: "It is well established under Section 402(a)(3) that a food which contains a
decomposed substance...is subject to seizure by FDA." It's thoroughly established that
after a number of weeks and at temperatures over 85 degrees F, there's no aspartame left
in a soft drink, only breakdown products. So, why isn't FDA seizing it under Section 402
(a)(3)?
Q: Your book, Deadly Deception reports that initially FDA had started investigations of the
G.D. Searle Company, makers of aspartame.
A: Yes. In 1977 an FDA task force submitted a 15,000 page document covering their
investigation. Here are two quotes:
"We have uncovered serious deficiencies in Searle's integrity..."

PHOBIAS CIRCULATING FILE
"The cumulative findings of problems within and across the studies we investigated reveal
a pattern of conduct which compromises the scientific integrity of the studies."
Q: These are from FDA's own task force report on Searle's aspartame research?
A: Exactly. Your readers may not know that aspartame was originally approved in 1974,
but when the brain-tumor issue arose, the approval was withdrawn.
Q: Tell us about the "brain-tumor issue."
A: Many of the test animals fed aspartame developed large tumors. These were actually
cut out, and the animals returned to the study. In some cases, the tumors weren't even
examined for malignancy, and the tumors weren't reported to FDA. In several cases,
animals were reported as dead and later reported as alive again.
Q: No wonder FDA's task force "uncovered serious deficiencies in Searle's integrity!"
A: The results of the task force investigation of aspartame and other Searle drugs were
presented to the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Labor and Public Welfare. Senator
Edward Kennedy said that "the extensive nature of the almost unbelievable range of
abuses discovered by the FDA on several major Searle products is profoundly disturbing."
Q: So, how did aspartame ever get approved and progress so far into our food supply?
A: Well, for one thing, a former member of Congress and Chief of Staff in the Ford
Administration, Donald Rumsfeld, was hired as President of Searle in 1977. Rumsfeld was
paid $2 million in salary and $1.5 million in bonuses between 1979 and 1984.
Q: Oh-oh.
A: Also, in 1977, Senior Assistant U.S. Attorney, William Conlon was assigned to the
Searle case. He took no action, despite repeated prodding by Richard Merrill, Chief
Counsel to the FDA. One year later, Conlon took a position with Sidley and Austin, the law
firm representing Searle.
Q: A pattern seems to be emerging.
A: Rumsfeld, now Searle president, hired: John Robson as Executive Vice-President - he
had been a spokesman of the Civil Aeronautics Board; William Greener as Chief
Spokesman for Searle - he had been a spokesman in the Ford White House; and, Robert
Shapiro as General Counsel, who later became head of Searle's NutraSweet Division - he
had been a Special Assistant in the Department of Transportation. But, here's the pay-off!
Q: No pun intended?
A: The facts are interesting, aren't they? In 1983, the Commissioner of the FDA, Dr. Arthur
Hull Hayes, Jr. approved NutraSweet for soft drinks two months before leaving office.
Two-to-three months later, he accepted a position as Senior Medical Advisor to Searle's
public relations firm, Burson Marsteller. He was paid $1,000 per day as consultant.
Q: Really, $1,000 a day? This is a matter of public record?
A: A matter of public record. And, Michael Taylor was also involved in the approval of
aspartame.
Q: Michael Taylor, the Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH) man, who worked for FDA,
lawyered for Monsanto to get rBGH approved, then went to work for FDA writing their BGH
regulations?
A: The very same. Didn't you know that G. D. Searle is a wholly-owned subsidiary of
Monsanto, with Robert Shapiro as current CEO?

Q: What a surprise. And a not unfamiliar pattern. But, tell us about aviation and
aspartame.
A: The official Air Force safety magazine, FLYING SAFETY, and the Navy's flight
magazine, NAVY PHYSIOLOGY, have both published warnings about using aspartame
and flying.
Q: Will you give us an example?
A: A pilot called ACSN's Pilot Hotline two nights ago and told me about his experience.
Flying for Peninsula Airlines in Alaska, he had a seizure in flight at 10,000 feet and was
grounded. He had been drinking eight to ten cups of coffee a day sweetened with Equal,
another aspartame compound. Since he quit aspartame, he's been seizure-free, but he
hasn't been allowed to fly.
Q: We need to know more about this.
A: In my book, Deadly Deception, there's a reprint of a scientific paper showing that
aspartame aggravates abnormal brain waves in children with epilepsy.
Q: Maybe airline passengers should question pilots about aspartame use before boarding!
What about those U.S. Senate hearings during which pilots testified about the adverse
effects of aspartame on their flying abilities?
A: There have actually been three hearings.
Q: Here we go again!
A: Speaking of contributions... watch out diabetics! The NutraSweet company has given
money to the American Diabetic Association. And, remember when you hear a registered
dietitian say aspartame is safe for pregnant women, and children, the Registered
Dietitian's professional association has been given $75,000 to expound on the virtues of
aspartame. The American Dietetic Association has even stated that the NutraSweet
company writes their "Fact Sheets."
Q: So, there's money everywhere...to members of Congress, former regulatory
bureaucrats, professional associations...
A: Absolutely. Aspartame approval and persistence on the market has everything to do
with money and politics, and almost nothing to do with science and reason. Even the
FDA's own reviewers were against aspartame until those political/financial events I've
mentioned.
Q: Is there any hope to reverse all this?
A: Each of us will have to do it ourselves, one at a time and by spreading the word.
Fortunately, it appears that the public pays more attention to this issue when they're given
access to the information I've been outlining.
Q: Thank you so much for devoting your time and energy to spreading the word about the
hazards of aspartame.
A: Your readers can call the ASPARTAME CONSUMER SAFETY NETWORK at
(214)352-4268 for more information.*(U.S. Attorney, Samuel Skinner was prosecuting G.D.
Searle for falsifying ests submitted for approval of aspartame, but recused himself at the last minute
to join Searle's law firm, Sidley & Austin. Skinner then went back into Government, becoming head
of the Dept. of Transportation - over the FAA. From there he was appointed Chief of Staff in
President Bush's White House. Recently, he was nominated Man-of-the-Year by the Epilepsy
Foundation in Chicago. Ironically, aspartame is reported to "trigger" epilepsy in a number of
Epileptics. Also, former Monsanto Attorney, Clarence Thomas was appointed Supreme Court
Judge amidst swirling controversy over his appointment! Ed.)
