Our Beautiful Bones Your Skeleton Baby bones Your skeleton is very important. It is the frame that gives your body its shape. It protects body organs such as the lungs and heart. With the aid of muscles, it helps you move about. To find out more about your skeleton, The Mini Page talked to Dr. Laura Tosi. Babies have about 270 bones when they are born. As they get older, their bones grow together. Adults have 206 bones. Babies' bones are all made of a soft tissue called cartilage. As the baby grows, its cartilage cells start turning to bone. The bloodstream deposits minerals such as calcium and phosphorus in the older cartilage cells. The minerals make the cartilage harden, and it is remodeled to become bone. Living bones Your bones are alive. They are made of water, minerals, and living tissue such as cells and blood vessels. ~A--~2==~~~-~ A bone is like a pipe. The thick outer part is called the cortex (A). The inside is loosely packed bone that is called the marrow (B). Blood cells are made in the marrow. Calcium Fun bone facts • More than half the bones in your body are in your hands and feet. There are 54 bones in your hands and wrists and 52 in your feet and ankles. • About five out of 100 people have an extra rib. Seventy-five percent of these are men. • The smallest bone in your body is the stirrup bone in your ear. The largest is the femur in your leg. ~ Dr. Laura Tosi is chief of orthopaedics and sports medicine, Children's National Medical Center, Washington, D.C. femur patella (kneecap) fibula Bones are an important savings bank for calcium. Calcium is deposited in bone and saved up until the bloodstream makes a withdrawal. The blood then carries the calcium to help our hearts beat and our muscles work. The body has a kind of thermostat. Every second the body is testing to see if there is enough calcium in the blood. If there is not enough, the body orders special cells to dissolve some bone to get more calcium into the blood. Take Care of Your Bones Skeleton care is important to us because we build our skeletons when we are young. Every day there are cells dissolving bone as well as cells laying down bone .• In old age, the ~ cells dissolving bone start moving faster than those building the bone. Because they are weaker, older bones become brittle and break easily. A strong, well-built skeleton slows down this process. Bone health Building a skeleton is like building a house. If you build a sturdy house, it will hold up when storms hit it. The main time to build a sturdy skeleton is when you are young. Building a strong skeleton when you are a child will allow you to stay strong and independent when you are older. Almost all your bone is laid down when you are a child. Bone building slows for girls when they ~r. reach about age 14, and for boys ~j;; .v",.".~"",TY' when they are about 18. Until about age 25 or 30, the body can make bones thicker, but not longer. After that, there is little bone added at all. Site to see: www.kidshealth.org Look through the sports section of your newspaper for ads and stories about people exercising. Exercise, a bone's best friend Eat right! The most important thing you can do for your bones is to exercise. Bones have to feel impact to grow sturdy. Sometimes (people who have been injured or sick may have to stay in bed for a long time. When this happens, they may face bone loss, which makes it easier for the bone to break. This happens to many elderly people. The best way to stay healthy is to stay active. We have to take in enough of the minerals calcium and phosphorus to keep the bone-building cells working well. Eat right. Drink milk. Most of us like sodas, but milk is better for growing kids. The vitamin D that you get in fortified milk I and sunlight also helps build bones. (Your skin makes vitamin D when it is exposed to sun.) A growing child or teenager needs the ~~ramount of calcium found in three or four 8-ounce glasses of milk a day. There are many other delicious ways to get enough calcium. For example, you can have pizza with cheese, frozen yogurt, chocolate milk, p~ddin~, sou~ made ~. ~ WIth mIlk, or Ice ~ cream. Many ,.:. vegetables such as ~ broccoli and kale are ~ also rich in calcium. ~ Some kids have trouble digesting milk, but even these kids can usually eat cheese or yogurt, or a special milk that is easier to digest. Boning up on exercises The best exercises for bones are those that put weight on the skeleton. These include running, walking or dancing, or any sport that uses these skills such as soccer or basketball. Jumping rope IS great. Some exerCIses such as SWImmIng or biking are good for your body in different ways. You should exercise every day for the good of your body. But only exercises that put weight on your skeleton will help your bones. So be sure to include those as well. Rolling backpacks are a good idea. Do wear helmets and kneepads to protect your bones when skating and skateboarding. Do wear helmets when biking. \ Kids' bones heal quicker than adult bones, but a broken bone is no fun for anyone. Create a "healthy bones" poster that has five ideas for building strong bones. 2. Just for fun, write a story about a skeleton who worries about being fit. 3. Use newspaper ads to find words and pictures offoods that build strong bones. Put your words and pictures into two categories: healthy foods and fun foods. 4. Make a list of activities people can do to put weight on their bones. Now survey your family members and friends. Ask them which of the activities they do "almost never," "sometimes" or "often." Which activities are the most popular? 5. Use reference books and the Internet to learn more about osteoporosis. Use these questions to guide your research: What is osteoporosis?
