How it works
Mimecast Targeted Threat Protection is an advanced email security technology that is an additional
component of the Mimecast Secure Email Gateway. As emails are delivered through the Mimecast Secure
Email Gateway in the cloud, Targeted Threat Protection, when enabled, rewrites all URLs and links to websites
in every email. URL rewriting of every single link removes uncertainty about whether or not end users are
protected from spear-phishing; without adding any additional gateway processing overhead or latency.
Spear-phishing or targeted attacks aim to use social engineering to trick users into reacting to an email.
Clicking on an embedded link in an email is usually the first step of the attack. Mimecast Targeted Threat
Protection removes the threat of spear-phishing and targeted attacks altogether, by re-writing the URLs and
links embedded in emails to ‘point’ to Mimecast threat scanning infrastructure. So when the user clicks on a
link they are directed to Mimecast’s Threat database infrastructure initially, which scans ahead of the users’
browser to determine if the destination website is a phishing or spear-phishing host.
Every click, every device
Because Mimecast Targeted Threat protection re-writes all URLs and links in all emails, the end users are
protected on every device and client; whether they use Microsoft Outlook, their corporate smartphone or
their own BYOD device or personal computer. Mimecast Targeted Threat Protection provides comprehensive
protection across all devices and inboxes, removing the need to deploy additional protection for mobile or
BYOD devices.
Administrator Control
Administrator control is maintained through the Mimecast Administration Console, and - Targeted Threat
Protection is fully integrated with the complete set of security policies available. Administrators can specifically
block, warn or allow end user access to websites; helping educate end users of the risks of spear-phishing
and to making them aware that corporate email is now protected by Mimecast Targeted Threat Protection.
Using Mimecast Targeted Threat Protection helps users understand their role as your human firewall and
enhancing their ability to spot dangerous emails and potentially suspicious URLs and links.
Complete logging, auditing and reporting is maintained in the Mimecast Administration Console, which allows
administrators to monitor and track phishing and spear-phishing websites as they reach corporate email users.
The Threat Dashboard shows real time hits against positive phishing websites that users have been directed to
through their emails, and where Mimecast has protected them from compromise, while real-time administrator
notifications keep your IT team firmly in control.
