Page 20 FEATURES Friday, Feb. 10, 2017 1 in 1700: senior Nick Fulkerson Robert Wormley Photo Editor What do you love about ROTC? “I love what it teaches young kids. I came in freshman year kind of a normal freshman. Through the years it has taught me many things I would not have learned in any other program, responsibility, take responsibility of my own actions, how be confident, it definitely brought me out of my shell. It teaches you a lot of life skills.” What is your position in ROTC, what do you do? “I am the cadet commanding officer so I make sure that all 131 cadets are managed effectively so I sit down with Chief Warrant Officer (4) Epperson and Senior Chief Beal. They have the overall direction then it is left to me and my staff to put it into action and make sure it gets taken care of the way it needs to be done.” Why did you choose to join the Marines? “I want to be the best honestly. ROTC has taught me to never settle, that’s why I would say I have worked so hard to get to the top. I have just never settled I have always demanded more of myself and the people around me. I chose the Marine Corps because that is what it is built on, to never settle for what you have and you can always be that much better.“ What is it like to be you? “I say that I am just an average high school student that’s all ROTC is, we’re just high schools students that do something a little extra that we have interests in. I describe myself as an average high school student, I go to school, I work I am in extra curricular activities. I guess it is how you would see me from the outside. I see myself just as a normal kid, 17 years old.” To view a multimedia version of the 1 in 1700 on senior Nick Fulkerson, go to fchsbagpiper.wordpress.com. Robert Wormley/The Bagpiper
