Mendelssohn and His World: Cultural Contexts for 'Elijah'"

Explore the historical and cultural dimensions of Mendelssohn’s life and work through a panel discussion with UR
scholars, moderated by Reinhild Steingrover, Professor of German and Chair of the Department of Humanities at
the Eastman School, and herself a scholar of German culture and the arts. Corbett Bazler, Assistant Professor of
Music in the College Department of Music and Assistant Professor of Musicology at the Eastman School, will share
his expertise on traditions of oratorio. Aaron Hughes, the Philip S. Bernstein Professor of Jewish Studies, will
provide perspectives on Mendelssohn’s German Jewish background, including discussion of his grandfather, Moses
Mendelssohn. Jurgen Thym, Emeritus Professor of Musicology at Eastman and the editor of a recently-published
collection of essays on Mendelssohn and the organ, will offer insights into the place of “Elijah” in Mendelssohn’s
career. Open discussion will follow.
