Annual Report - Masonic Charities

2015 ANNUAL REPORT
MASONIC CHARITIES
of the R.W. Grand Lodge F. & A.M. of Pennsylvania
“Without the children’s home and the
people who give, I wouldn’t be where I am
today, that’s for sure. I’ve got everything I
need to go forward.”
- Shinely, Masonic Children’s Home
R.W. GRAND MASTER
RAYMOND T. DIETZ
Built on a foundation of love and compassion, the five Masonic Charities support
those of all ages and needs. Thanks to generously given funds and time, the Masonic
Charities give way to a future dedicated to keeping the Masonic legacy alive and
continuing to help individuals of all ages evolve and thrive.
Each charity symbolizes a different mission, but all have positively impacted
countless lives in 2015.
The Masonic Library and Museum of Pennsylvania has served as a
pride piece for Masons since 1873 by educating and inspiring the public, preserving
Masonic history and serving as a beautiful backdrop to significant moments in
Freemasonry. The Masonic Temple, Library and Museum has continued to be a
National Historic Landmark of which we can all be proud.
The Pennsylvania Masonic Youth Foundation provides education and
programs to develop leadership and character among the youth of Pennsylvania.
Each Masonic youth group receives educational resources, training and opportunities
for scholarships in support of their future goals.
Within the Masonic Children’s Home, which is fully supported by donations,
up to 40 youth experience the love and care provided within a structured and secure
surrounding. With many opportunities for growth, learning life skills, taking on new
responsibilities and exploring their interests, these youth are free to dream.
The Masonic Villages demonstrate their Mission of Love by providing care and
security to residents, regardless of their ability to pay. More than 2,800 individuals
call Masonic Village home, where they can discover their passions within a loving
environment.
The Masonic Charities Fund offers help at local, national and global levels for
Masonic and non-Masonic projects alike. These projects may include scholarships
or disaster relief, but recently have focused on preserving the Masonic Temple,
Library and Museum.
You can learn more about each of these charities throughout this Annual Report
and hear from those who have been impacted by your kindness. If you would
like to continue your support, please complete and return the enclosed
envelope. Donors, thank you for supporting our Masonic Charities and
for keeping Freemasonry and our philanthropic goals alive.

Each fellow member of Bro. Ed Achilles’ Lodge is
considered part of his family. His required attendance at
meetings and functions is never seen as a chore, but as an
opportunity to spend time with those closest to his heart.
Bro. Ed became a Mason four years ago, encouraged
after witnessing what the fraternity does for its brothers
and community members. As a family and business man,
Bro. Ed wanted not only to better himself, but to impact
the lives of those around him. After his first year, he began
expanding his commitment and advancing through the
chairs in Concordia Lodge No. 67, Jenkintown.
Now, as Worshipful Master, Bro. Ed leads the Lodge in
planning brotherly get-togethers, educational opportunities
and community events. With the Masonic Temple, home
to the Masonic Library and Museum, so close by, many
of these activities center around its amenities.
“Standing at the beautiful grand entrance of the
Temple makes you proud to be a Mason,” he said. “It
makes you want to put more time, energy and love into
your role, just like those who came before you. It’s a
feeling unlike any other.”
To Bro. Ed, the Masonic Temple also displays modern
innovation at its finest. Its builders were forward-thinking,
preparing for modern conveniences prior to their invention.
“It’s amazing what the builders thought of,” he said.
“Ventilation systems were even installed for future heating
and air conditioning. These Masons were at least 50 years
before their time.”
Bro. Ed, fellow members of Concordia Lodge and many
others like them know the importance of the Temple’s
preservation - that’s why they choose to give. Whether it be
funding for new benches, a restored welcome desk or Grand
Ballroom, every thought counts in conserving the building
that remains a constant icon in an ever-changing world.
The Masonic Library and Museum obtained artist
Brad Clever’s painting of the Masonic Friend to Friend
scene at the battle of Gettsyburg (far left) in 2015.
The scene depicts Union Captain Henry Bingham, a
Pennsylvania Mason, as he comes to the aid of his
Masonic brother, fatally wounded Confederate Brigadier
General Lewis A. Armistead of Virginia. The painting will
join the more than 30,000 treasured artifacts housed
within the Temple.
PROTECTING MASONIC HISTORY
Renovations to the Masonic Temple continued to
preserve the National Historic Landmark, valued at
more than $1 billion (including the building and its
contents), for future generations.
Renovations and improvements in 2015 included the
installment of 56 security cameras, the refinishing of the
Filbert Street door, fence repair, replacement of floor
and ceiling tiles, lobby updates, window sill painting,
the installment of Wi-Fi in the John Wanamaker Room
and more.
EDUCATING THE PUBLIC
In 2015 alone, the Masonic Temple
received 10,733 visitors from all over the
nation, many of whom were mesmerized
by the Temple’s ornate structure and seven
themed lodge rooms, which possess unique
design work of unmatched detail and quality.
Thanks to those
who help keep the
doors of the Temple
open, the history of the
Masonic fraternity can
be outwardly displayed
while demonstrating the
Masonic traditions and
values of today.

Giving Back
Since his youth, Bro. Glen Grell, Past Master of
St. John’s Lodge No. 260, Carlisle, has worked on
developing a strong work ethic, organization and
leadership skills. He has seen many accomplishments
in both his professional and personal life and credits
his involvement with the Pennsylvania Masonic Youth
Foundation (PMYF) for playing a role in his success.
“My older brother was a member [of Pennsylvania
DeMolay] and our parents thought the program would
be good for me, too,” Bro. Glen said. “They were
right. Masonic youth groups are all about providing
opportunities for personal development and fun, all
in a wholesome and virtuous environment.”
Youth can be quite impressionable. Therefore, to
Bro. Glen, there’s nothing better than watching them
6
take on leadership opportunities and volunteer in
their communities. With the help of generous donors,
PMYF provides education to its members, as well
as programming and scholarships. By organizing
their own activities and participating in conferences,
youth members also have the opportunity to observe
and develop leadership skills, just as Bro. Glen
experienced, which will serve them well in any field
of work or study.
“The foundation demonstrates the commitment of
today’s Masons to the next generation,” Bro. Glen
said.
Throughout his career, Bro. Glen has played a
large role in passing several pieces of important
legislation including major reforms to Pennsylvania’s
pension system and the state’s criminal justice and
corrections systems. Prior to becoming executive
director of the Public School Employees’ Retirement
System, a $48.8 billion public pension system, Bro.
Glen served as an elected State Representative
for the 87th District in the Pennsylvania House of
Representatives. Prior to his election, Bro. Glen was
a practicing attorney.
Amidst his busy career, Bro. Glen finds time to
volunteer his service on the Board of PMYF. A member
of the Scholarship Committee since 1990, Bro. Glen
has served as chairman for years.
“It has been very exciting to watch PMYF’s
scholarship program grow from nothing to awarding
over a million dollars to deserving students,” Bro.
Glen said. “It’s extremely rewarding to assist deserving
youth in the pursuit of their educational dreams.”
By devoting his time and commitment, Bro. Glen is
allowing future youth to be positively impacted by the
organization, an experience he is proud to pass on.

VOLUNTEERING TIME AND TALENTS
In addition to volunteering at the various Masonic
Villages for special events (including the 2015 live
reenactment of the Friend to Friend Masonic Memorial

Impaired Kids Endowment (HIKE), sent packages and
cards to troops serving overseas, worked with Masonic
Lodges to collect food for the Central Pennsylvania
Food Bank and raised money for the Children’s Dyslexia
Centers, all demonstrating the foundation’s motto:
“As we serve others,
we improve ourselves.”
TEACHING LIFE SKILLS
Helping youth develop leadership, respect, relational
skills and personal responsibility continues to be the goal
of PMYF. The LifeSkills program, held at the Masonic
Conference Center - Patton Campus in Elizabethtown, gave
youth between the ages of 12 and 16 the opportunity to
develop those skills as well as participate in active discussions
of some of the toughest issues facing youth today. Building
on the LifeSkills principles of respect, responsibility and
relationships, youth also had the opportunity to take a look
at how to build community in their peer groups and other
organizations at the annual LifeChangers Conference.

Living Out Dreams
LIVING IN THE NOW
Looking back to when she was 11 years old, Shinely
recognizes how different her life was. She had trouble
adjusting after moving to the children’s home.
“I moved around a lot as a kid, so I was used to it,”
she said. “That made it harder for me to settle down
in one place, even though staying in one place was
good for me.”
Since adjusting, Shinely has made friends, achieved
honor roll and learned the importance of living in the
moment. “Living here has allowed me to do things I
never would have been able to do,” Shinely said, “like
play sports. I would have been at home watching my
brothers and sisters because my mom works a lot.”
PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE
Sixteen-year-old Shinely thrives on challenging
herself. By being involved in leadership programs,
serving as photographer for her high school’s
newspaper and participating in sports, she is
excited to be bettering herself. Shinely’s way of
planning her busy schedule and taking command
of any situation exudes confidence. She says she
has the Masonic Children’s Home to thank for that.
8
After taking courses in business management this
year, Shinely learned she had a knack for business and
wants to expand her knowledge, eventually earning
a bachelor’s degree in business administration. “I
found something I’m really interested in and that I’m
good at,” Shinely said. “I’m excited to start college,
and I’m just thankful I have the opportunity to go. I
could see myself as a CEO one day.”
The Masonic Children’s Home supported 11
students in 2015 as they furthered their education in
their chosen fields of interests. With the creation of
the Advanced Education Scholarship Fund in 2015,
which has raised more than $5 million to date, many
more college dreams are set to be funded in the future.
To donors, Shinely says, “I am so thankful you are
able to give. As young kids, we may not see the benefit
A LASTING IMPACT
She passed away at age 101, leaving a surprise
donation of $10.9 million to the place that took her
in when she was just a child. In 1914, at age 3, Dr.
Dorothea Ilgen Shaffer moved to the children’s home
and lived there with her brother until she graduated
from high school.
She grew to pursue further education and give to
causes close to her heart. Her gift, received in 2015,
recognizes the quality of care she received at the
Masonic Children’s Home and will help provide daily
necessities for today’s children, as well as help sponsor
their higher education. A plaque in Dr. Shaffer’s memory
has been placed at the children’s home, inscribed with
Nelson Mandela’s words:
“Education is the most
powerful weapon which you
can use to change the world.”
said. “She is high-spirited and fun-loving, and she
continuously rises bravely to any challenge thrown at
her. She has a great listening ear and broad shoulders
for her friends here to lean on.”
Although Shinely is looking forward to attending
college (she’s currently tied between Shippensburg and
West Chester University), she will miss all the activity
at the children’s home. Shinely smiles at the thought
of the beach vacations and the fun she had, but she
knows she has many more smiles in store.
Before Shinely heads off to college and starts
preparing for a career, she focuses on living in the
now and on those around her. What makes her most
happy? “Seeing other people happy,” she says.
MASONIC CHILDREN’S HOME
of having our schooling paid for us, but I’m so grateful
now, and I know I will be even more grateful in the
future. Without donations, we wouldn’t really be here.”
To help the children succeed in school and prepare
them for advanced education, the children’s home
offers on-site tutoring opportunities and even brings
in students from local Elizabethtown College to assist
in tutoring and planning of educational programs.
House parents also play a large role in educational
success. Whether it’s encouraging them to brighten
their attitude on homework or helping them prepare for
a mock-interview at school (which Shinely passed with
flying colors), the house parents are there for every step.
“Shinely has grown into a beautiful and responsible
young woman,” Michele, primary house parent,

MASONIC VILLAGES
Granting Wishes
Dallas • Elizabethtown • Lafayette Hill • Sewickley • Warminster • www.masonicvillages.org
Thanks to the generosity of many donors, residents
of the Masonic Villages enjoy favorite pastimes, great
company and new experiences in 2015.
ENJOYING FRIENDS
Residents of both Masonic Village at Dallas and
Masonic Village at Lafayette Hill had the opportunity
to explore Philadelphia thanks to generous donor
contributions. Residents from both communities boarded
the Spirit of Philadelphia Cruise and enjoyed fine cuisine,
learning opportunities and great company. Masonic Village
at Dallas residents also toured the beautiful Masonic
Temple as part of their trip.
Masonic Village at Warminster residents received
a new gazebo and fish aquarium, thanks to the kindness of
donors. “It’s amazing how much seemingly simple things
make a difference in the lives of our residents,” Trisha
Lamb, activities director, said. “They love sitting at the
gazebo and relaxing with nature. I can’t thank donors
enough for the impact they have on residents. We see it
every day.”
Residents of the Bleiler Caring Cottage in
Elizabethtown, home to adults with developmental
disabilities, had the chance to go on several trips including
camping, baseball games and holiday celebrations, which
all created lifelong memories.
10
EXPRESSING CREATIVITY
Whether it’s a played recording or performed live, music
can promote better health for those of all ages. It can
take the listener back to a memory, make them move and
give an outlet for expression. These are all reasons why
music is so important to the residents and staff of Masonic
Villages. At Masonic Village at Sewickley, thanks
to the generosity of several donors, the Music Therapy
Department received two Yamaha digital pianos and
two piano dollies. “I love so many things about Masonic
Village,” DeeDee Evans, a 2015 music therapy intern, said.
“The residents are so open to music, and all of them have
really touched my heart.”
MAKING MEMORIES
Masonic Village at Elizabethtown resident Bob
Marvel, who had a lifelong passion for flying, took to the
sky one last time in 2015 with the help of Masonic Village
Hospice, donors and volunteers. Bob and his wife, Fay,
enjoyed a 40-minute airplane ride along the Susquehanna
River, taking a detour to Lancaster Airport, where he was
able to recall his youth.
Hospice staff, volunteers and donors pride themselves
on fulfilling requests of patients so they may complete their
lives joyfully. “He wouldn’t have cared where we took him,
he just enjoys being up in a plane,” Fay said.
MASONIC VILLAGES
“I’m so happy I have
Masonic Village to
call home. You feel
like you’re part of
the family.”
Smiling From the Inside Out
Margie Learn is known to have a smile that lights up
the room. During her 20 years in the accounting department
at Masonic Village at Elizabethtown, that smile welcomed
countless residents who called Masonic Village home. Margie
didn’t really think about the day she would too, but now, she
couldn’t be happier.
She enjoys keeping active, attending live entertainment
and music therapy sessions, visiting with friends and chatting
with staff, whom she has grown to know and love.
“I’ve got all the business I want here. I can choose what
I want for each meal and which activities I want to do each
day,” Margie said.
Life wasn’t always easy. When Margie’s husband, Tom,
became ill and passed away a few years ago, she was in shock.
They had recently moved to an apartment at Masonic Village,
and she had envisioned spending their hard-earned retirement
together. Luckily, Margie found herself comforted by friends,
family and staff. Now, as a resident of the Masonic Health Care
Center, she still finds herself close with her “second family.”
“I’m happy I could take care of my husband while he lived,”
she said. “Now, I’m happy I’m being taken care of.”
Her family is grateful for Margie’s care, too.
“My children have their own children to take care of, and
I’m relieved they don’t have to worry about me. If something
happens, they know I’m in good hands,” she said.
Renovations to the Masonic Health Care Center have
transformed residents’ neighborhoods into household designs.
Country kitchens (open dining spaces where food is cooked
to order), updated resident suites and bathrooms and larger
living rooms within each neighborhood enhance residents’
health and well-being, a top priority of Masonic Villages’
Mission of Love.
The renovations were based heavily on the Eden Alternative,
which Masonic Villages has been certified in since 1999.
Eden-centered communities commit to infuse the daily lives of
residents with variety and spontaneity by creating environments
in which meaningful and unique interactions take place.
“You can tell everyone here cares about you and how
you are,” Margie said. “They smile at you and make sure
you’re okay.” And to Margie, a seemingly simple smile means
everything.

EARNING RECOGNITION
SeniorAdvisor.com, the largest ratings and reviews site for
senior care and services in North America, recognized Masonic
Village at Elizabethtown as one of the “Best of the Best”
providers based on online ratings completed by residents and
families. Over 1,000 assisted living, in-home care and other
senior housing providers were recognized, but Masonic Village
at Elizabethtown was the only retirement community in Lancaster
County to make the list.
The Eastern Pennsylvania chapter of the Associated Builders
and Contractors, a national professional organization, awarded
Masonic Village at Lafayette Hill’s new apartment construction
(pictured above) the annual Excellence in Construction award.
The project, completed by Warfel Construction Company and
designed by RLPS Architects, both of Lancaster, added 60
apartments and an extra 96,000 sq. ft. of living space to the
campus, bringing the total number of retirement living residences
to 158. The new apartment building was dedicated on Sept. 8,
2015, by the officers of the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania.
PERFECTING RESIDENT CARE
Masonic Village at Sewickley implemented a 16-bed
Transitional Care Unit (TCU) in the Hawthorne neighborhood of
the Sturgeon Health Care Center in 2015. The TCU is open to
both current residents and members of surrounding communities.
12
Staff also provided 7,145 hours of home care services, a program
Masonic Village at Sewickley is looking forward to expanding
even more in the future.
A new electronic medical record system was installed at
Masonic Village at Warminster to improve workflow and
enable staff to quickly transfer, customize and compare patient
data. Two major building improvements were completed at
Masonic Village at Warminster including the renovation of resident
bathrooms and spas to be more accessible and modern.
CELEBRATING MILESTONES
The Adult Daily Living Center in Elizabethtown celebrated
its 20th anniversary in 2015. The center relieves caregivers from
their stresses and demands by providing top quality care to adults
18 and older who may have difficulty structuring their own daily
activities or can’t safely be left at home due to physical, social
or cognitive impairments.
SHARING EXPERTISE
Masonic Village at Dallas offered several events that were
open to both residents and the surrounding community including
the healthy aging seminar series, flu vaccination clinic, fit and
healthy basics clinics, tax planning seminars, Nordic Walking and
Tai Chi for Arthritis. A Fall Prevention Program was also offered
in partnership with nearby Misericordia University’s Physical

This loss was covered by the following support from the

Excess of revenues, support and gains over expenses
The operating expenses of the
Masonic Villages have historically
exceeded operating revenues.
Through the generosity of
Freemasons and friends of the
fraternity, contributions and bequests
enable the Masonic Villages to cover
this deficit. The bequests, which
have been generously donated to
the Masonic Villages, have been
invested, and the investment income
earned on these funds allows
Masonic Villages to continue its
“Mission of Love” and caring for
those in need. Any excess funds
will be invested so Masonic Villages
can continue to provide charitable
services to our residents and the

independently in the community, as well as the students. The
program was so successful, it will continue into 2016.
Ashlar Creative Solutions continued to provide
management, development and consulting services to other
organizations, including the Masonic Charity Foundation in New
Jersey, which owns and operates the Masonic Home of New
Jersey, recently renamed the Masonic Village at Burlington. Ashlar
oversaw the redevelopment of the retirement living apartment
building on the campus, which opened and reached 100 percent
occupancy in 2015.
Ashlar also continued to serve as the outsourced leadership
and educational resource for local Lancaster County continuing
care retirement communities. Ashlar, a for-profit subsidiary of
the Masonic Villages, generates income to help underwrite the
Mission of Love.
GIVING PEACE OF MIND
With the help of donors, the Masonic Villages display a
Mission of Love by giving peace of mind to many, including
those who cannot afford the care they deserve. For residents whose
savings, insurance or public assistance does not fully cover the
cost of their care, the financial security of compassionate care is
a true blessing. Donations to the Masonic Compassionate
Care Fund specifically help cover health care costs of residents
in Elizabethtown, Lafayette Hill, Sewickley and Warminster, and
provide reassurance that essential services will be available to
them even if their assets deplete.
In 2015, through the charity of Pennsylvania
Freemasons, their families and others who have
contributed to its mission, Masonic Villages provided
charity care and services worth approximately $40.5
million across the state to individuals unable to pay for
their care.
VOLUNTEERING
Hundreds, including community members, students
and residents, assisted Masonic Villages in spreading the
Mission of Love by volunteering their hearts, hands and
smiles in 2015. Volunteer programs across the Masonic
Villages can help students fulfill community service hours
and provide people of all ages the opportunity to meet
fellow volunteers, learn a variety of skills, develop new
interests, and of course, feel the satisfaction of helping
others. To learn more about volunteering at the Masonic
Villages, visit masonicvillages.org/volunteer-opportunities.

FRANKLIN LEGACY SOCIETY MEMBERS
The Franklin Legacy Society recognizes and honors persons of vision and foresight who have
taken the initiative to strengthen and enhance the good works of one or more of the Masonic
Charities of the Right Worshipful Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania through their estate plans.
If you have provided for one or more of the Masonic Charities in your financial
plans, through a bequest, revocable trust, life insurance policy or retirement plan, you
qualify for membership. Also eligible are persons who have entered into a planned gift
arrangement, such as a life estate, charitable gift annuity, charitable remainder trust
or charitable lead trust with one of the Masonic Charities.
Members are recognized on a donor wall at the Masonic Village at Elizabethtown,
listed in the Annual Report, invited to special events each year and given a distinctive
lapel pin and book clock.
If you already have made a provision for one of the Masonic Charities in your
financial plans or are considering an arrangement as listed above and would like to join
the society, please complete and return the enclosed envelope or call us at 800-599-6454.

Help Continue Our Mission
The Masonic Charities represent the work of generations
of kind and caring people, all coming together to make a better
world. The foundation on which each of the Masonic Charities
stand is a foundation of love. You help maintain the foundation
and carry it into the future. Without you, the Masonic Charities
would cease to exist. They would cease to help children in need,
young scholars and leaders, fellow Masons and aging adults
in their life’s journey. Without you, those at the most fragile of
ages would have nowhere to turn for relief.
Carry our mission into the future and help us impact countless
more individuals. A gift through your Will or estate costs you
nothing during your lifetime and will have a lasting effect.
