Introduction to Place Value Through
Addition and Subtraction Within 20
Module 2 builds on what we learned in module one from
problem solving within 10 to work within 100 as students begin
to solve addition and subtraction problems involving teen
numbers. Students will learn the composition strategy, ‘make
ten’ and the decomposition strategy ‘take from ten’.

Module One Overview:
Students will:
● count on, or make ten to solve ‘result unknown’ and
‘total unknown’ problems
● count on or take from ten to solve ’result unknown’ and ‘total unknown’
problems
● develop strategies for solving change or addend unknown problems
●
explore varied problems with decompositions of teen numbers as 1 ten and
some ones
Module One Terminology:
Ones- Individual units, ten of which become a ten.
A ten- A group of ten ones; Students will focus mainly on one ten during this
module.
