In a first-time initiative, the Uttarakhand forest department is embarking on an ambitious
project to estimate the population of the elusive snow leopard that inhabits the higher reaches
of the Himalayas. The project, which is set to begin from June 16, will have several teams from
the department trek to the areas where trans-Himalayan big cat has its habitat. These include
places like the Gangotri National Park, Nanda Devi Biosphere, Valley of flowers, Askot
Wildlife Sanctuary, Govind National Park and select high-altitude areas of Bagheshwar,
Uttarkashi and Pithoragarh districts. Each team is expected to be led by an expert from the
Wildlife Institute of India (WII).
Considering that the snow leopard has been sighted very rarely by expeditions specifically
mounted to trace it, sources in the forest department acknowledged that sightings of the
elusive animals might be bleak. “Besides sightings, we will take records from the camera
traps, collect scat samples, droppings and other evidences such as scratching and scrapping
for estimation,” said Dhananjay Mohan, chief conservator of forests and head of the wild
animals estimation. He added that besides snow leopard, the teams would also count
Himalayan thar and black and brown bear.
Incidentally, in more than a year, only three sightings of snow leopard and one of brown bear
have been registered in the camera traps installed in Gangotri National Park.

is the soft drink manufacturer, Pepsi Cola which has spent about 2 million dollars in setting up a health
club at its head office in New York State. Such expenditure has proved to be a wise investment in
achieving better efficiency and high productivity. It has indirectly also helped reduce the premium on
the health insurance of staff. Hundreds of companies have come up for the management of health clubs
and fitness centres.

Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow :
The pilgrimage to Kailash-Mansarovar will be a breeze from June 22, thanks to a new route
allowed by the Chinese government. Instead of trekking for 12 days over rugged terrain at
altitudes up to 19,500 feet as they have been doing for centuries now, pilgrims to Mount
Kailash in South Western Tibet will be driven all through the Tibetan plateau from Nathula in
Sikkim.
While the old yatra route through Lipulekh takes 22 days, the journey from Nathula will take
only 19 days (from Delhi and back). Significantly, against 12 days of trekking , the pilgrims
will walk for only two-and–a-half days-when they do the ‘parikrama’ of Mount Kailash. The
first batch of 50 pilgrims will cross over into Tibet from Sikkim on June 22 to bus it all the way
to Darchen for their holy ‘parikrama’.
One-way journey from Delhi to Kailash–Mansarovar through Lipulekh is 854-km long, while
the one through Nathula is over 3,000 kms. Till now, pilgrims would trek through
Uttarakhand and Nepal and cross over to Tibet on foot through the Lipulekh Pass (17,000 feet)
and then journey by bus and foot to Mount Kailash.
The first batch of pilgrims will report to the MEA on June 13 and after all the formalities and
payment of fees (about Rs 1.7 lakh per person), fly to Bagdogra on June 17. “They will be
transported by luxury coaches to Gangtok and put up at star hotels there. The next day, they’ll
be taken for acclimatization to 15th mile (10,400 feet), where they’ll be put up in army facilities,
before being taken to Sherathang (13,500 feet) on June 20 for the next round of acclimatization.
They will undergo another round of medical tests at Sherathang the next day and on June 22,
they’ll be taken to Nathula in the morning to cross over to China. They disembark from our
buses at Nathula and walk a few meters to board Chinese buses after completion of

In 1947, Ken Arnold, a pilot, saw something very strange. While flying, he looked out of the
window and saw nine saucer-like objects flying past, in line. Each ‘saucer’, a hundred feet wide, was
travelling at great speed -around 1200 miles per hour. What were these objects?
After he landed, Arnold reported what he had seen. Scientists seemed to have no answer. So objects
came to be known as “Unidentified Flying Objects “or “UFO’s”.
Since 1947, more than 60,000 UFO’s have been reported. The US Air Force checked out the reports of
11,109 UFO sightings and found that 94% or 10,432 of these reports were ‘mis-identifications’. That is ,
people mistook stars, flights of geese, comets, meteors, sunlight on clouds, weather balloons, satellites
and other such objects for UFOs.
But there are reasons to believe that UFO’s have been actually sighted. One astronomer saw a UFO in
broad daylight while travelling by train. The UFO was flying parallel to the train. He could see it for
four or five minutes, before it rose out of sight and disappeared.
While most sights described as UFOs turn out to be misidentified known natural and artificial
phenomena, many hundreds do not. It is these that form the core of the UFO mystery. That UFOs
constitute a distinct category of describable sights is based on hundreds of highly detailed and
consistent descriptions by professionals (especially airline and military pilots) of their close-up, broad
daylight observations of unique flying machines.
Careful review of the vast array of relevant evidence clearly leads to the conclusion that some
unidentified flying objects are intelligently controlled vehicles whose origin is outside our solar system.
All the arguments against the extraterrestrial origin seem to be based upon false reasoning,
misrepresentation of evidence, neglect of relevant information, ignorance of relevant technology, or
pseudo sophisticated assumptions about alien appearance, motivation, or government secrecy.
