3rd estate wanted to have the ideas in the
Enlightenment. Natural Rights, equality, social
contract. Tired of being controlled by an absolute
monarch.
Showed change in action. American
Declaration of Independence motivated the
people of France
The 3rd estate had no money and had to pay most of
the taxes. They were starving to death and couldn't
take care of their families.
Most of the land and wealth was owned by
the smallest percent of the population
Government was in a lot of debt ( Palace of
Versailles, 7 year war) and taxed the 3rd
estate to pay for it.
