Electric and electro-pneumatic glue application heads ensure
fast, precise application in dot, line, coating and spray forms.
Pressure tanks with volumes between 1 and 15 litres are used
to provide a simple, cost-effective glue supply system for lowviscosity adhesives in the low-pressure range of up to 6 bar. For
higher viscosities or higher adhesive usage, 2:1 or 6:1 pumps
with attachments for 30 kg adhesive container are available.
Alongside its hot melt units, the carefully coordinated Xmelt® family also
includes temperature-controlled hoses and a variety of application heads
with mounts and nozzles to suit every need. The system is intelligent - it
automatically optimises its settings. The selection of application heads
ranges from fine dot or line application to coating and multi-application
heads, to spiramelt application. The modular assembly means that the
system can always be adapted to suit your requirements.

Quality Assurance
Baumer hhs control units can be retrofitted to machines from popular
manufacturers. Sensors and encoders record all of the machine’s input
sizes. When the control unit receives the input signal, it immediately
opens the glue application head - regardless of whether this is for
cold glue, hot melt or waterscoring. This means that the same glue
pattern can be applied to every product during serial production.
Baumer hhs’ quality assurance components are expertly designed to suit
the needs of the market. They can be used to inspect glue application,
anti mix check, or reject defective products. The components meet
all operational challenges. The QA systems connect glue application,
inspection and anti mix check using cameras within a centrally
managed system. These systems are equipped with a two-part
error warning system: The first step is an optical alarm for defective
products, in addition to ejection or marking at the end of the station
as needed. If there are multiple errors, the feeder can be stopped.
Waterscoring
By using waterscoring, inserts and outserts not only lie flatter, but
also do not re-open as easily. This means that the inserts can be
processed much more efficiently in the later packaging steps.

screen. Xtend³ is a modular, integrated
system for adhesive application control and
quality assurance. It combines glue application with optional glue inspection and camera based anti-mix check. By using a range
of sensors and camera technologies, you can
achieve total quality assurance.
Cold Glue
Electric cold glue application heads ensure
fast, precise dot and line glue application.
When producing fold-glued brochures and
booklets, the cold glue application heads
apply the adhesive in dot-line format onto
the sheet, without touching it, before the
first fold and (if required) after it. After the
last fold and an optional top-and-tail trim,
you have the finished product with no need
for any further steps.
Two application heads are needed to manufacture photo or insert envelopes and single
or two-up simple edge-glued mailers. Sliding segments are used to create the required
notches in the folding rollers.
To ensure that the folded sheet does not
open in the saddle stitcher, and that folded
sheets do not misalign supporting glue dots
grouped together, a very fine row of supporting glue can be applied to the edge within
the bleed area. This is then removed with the
trimmer at the end of the process.
The C-generation control unit is an uncomplicated and cost-effective entry point
into Baumer hhs’ glue application systems.
Depending on your needs, up to 2 or 4 different application heads can be controlled.
This generation of Xpect control units uses
the proven and progressive operational
concept behind the Xtend² control units.
This makes them the ideal choice for controlling glue application via a touchscreen.
The operation screen and control unit are
separate and can therefore be positioned
independently and in the optimum place
within the machine.
Waterscoring
Waterscoring is mainly used in the manufacture of inserts and outserts for the cosmetic
and pharmaceutical industries. It involves applying a solution of water and alcohol to the
fold lines before the folding process begins. This reduces resistance and makes the product
much easier to fold. Products created in this way lie flatter, do not open as easily and are
more easy to use in other production processes later on. Another positive aspect of this is
that more inserts can be packed into each box, ensuring that existing packaging material
is used more efficiently.

Hot Melt
The hot melt dot and coating application
heads are used for different applications
within print finishing.
A hot melt coating application head can be
used to apply single-track, U remoistable
gumming coating and double U remoistable
gumming coatings to sheets. A traditional
mailer mostly consists of an information
and a reply section, which has a rubber
coating applied in the form of a hot melt
glue. This can then later be re-moistened.
This reply section is filled out, moistened,
sealed and returned by the customer.
For Pick & Place application, peelable hot
melt is applied in dot form to the carrier material and then to a 3 dimensional object,
which can then be removed from the carrier
material without ripping away its fibres. A
hot melt film can also be used as a coating
to attach products such as credit cards to a
letter, in a way that means they can easily
be removed.
When inplate application heads are used
for sealing mailers, segmented roller mills
or notched rollers are no longer required,
as the product is closed before it enters
the machine’s roller mill. Only the envelope
openings and lip need to be processed. Due
to the high-quality dot application, there is
no stringing or other contamination that
could affect the machine.

Quality Assurance
In print processing, especially in the
manufacture of packaging and and inserts and outserts for the pharmaceutical
industry, it is completely unacceptable
for different varieties and orders to become mixed together. In the worst case
scenario, this can lead to the loss of a
customer, so our folding machines and
outsert equipment include the Xcam camera system. After isolating the order in the
machine, the camera reads both sides of
the code printed in the foreground, such
as a Pharmacode. It then learns this as an
accepted product. If a batch contains a
product from another order or language
version, this defective sheet is recognised
and can be ejected. This ensures that the
delivery only contains the correct version.
If the same defect is recognised multiple
times, the machine can be stopped. Various types of code such as 2D Data Matrix
codes, Pharmacodes or EAN codes can be
compared and verified against previously
read reference codes. As well as checking
the codes, the cameras can also be used
for pattern match, blank sheet detection
and OCR.
The Baumer hhs glue inspection system
can also recognise adhesives (cold glue
or hot melt) on different materials and
can assess the position and form of the
glue. The system checks the glue on
every product that passes through the
machine. It verifies that the actual value
of the chosen parameter lies within the
pre-programmed tolerance range. If a
defective product is identified, the machine is stopped so that the product can
be removed, or the machine can eject the
product.
In comparison to individual solutions, the
Xcam camera system can be connected to
an existing Xtend² system so that multiple
components such as gluing, glue inspection and anti mix check can be managed
centrally via a touchscreen. This means
that only one extra controller is needed
to track and eject defective products, and
collate statistics.
