Brunswick’s pumpkins and squash harvest written by Tim
The walled garden team has been busy growing pumpkins and squash this summer.
The pumpkins and squash have been harvested in time for the Pumpple Festival.
The pumpkins and squash are on sale in the Brunswick shop and will be on sale at
the Pumpple Festival. The Pumpple Festival will be on Sunday 30th October from
11am - 4pm at the Brunswick main site in Bishopthorpe. For more information about
the Pumpple Festival please read this newsletter.
The York Organic Gardeners Association Annual Show written by Elizabeth
The show was held at Brunswick on 17th
September. Brunswick did really well this year.
During the show vegetables were judged on
their taste.
Brunswick won first prizes for: sweet peppers,
marrow, squash, kale and Adriano and Chris’s
leeks. We won second prizes for: beefsteak
and cherry tomatoes and third prizes for:
Rachael’s ornamental flowers arrangements,
pickles, preserves and cucumbers. There were further commendations for:
Brunswick Jam and dessert apples.
We are very proud and we would like to say a big thank you to all the workers,
volunteers and staff who worked very hard on growing the vegetables.
If you would like to try Brunswick’s tasty vegetables, please visit the Brunswick shop
or you can join our vegetable box scheme.
Clothes Swap at Clements Hall written by Elizabeth.
I volunteered at the clothes swap on the Sunday 4th
September at Clements Hall. It was a fundraiser for
Brunswick Social Club & Accessible Arts and Media.
We made £550.00.
I was helping with Ed selling Chris’s DVD “The Only One Left” & raffle tickets for
Brunswick Pumpple Fest. It was great fun helping. I introduced a film about Chilli
Bon Bon. The film and the day were good.
“The Only One Left” is about Chris who went to visit his father’s grave in Italy for the
first time. Chris’s father was in the Second World War from 1940-1944. I went to see
the film. The film is excellent, a bit funny and a bit emotional.
The DVD is for sale at the Brunswick Shop for £5.00 or you
can order one at Brunswick Social Club. Please contact
[email protected].
Chilli Bon Bon is going to Germany
Brunswick’s community performance group Chilli Bon Bon is part of
an European Inclusive dance gathering. 13 Members of Chilli Bon
Bon will travel to Münster to be part and perform at the festival.
The festival is from 3rd November until 6th November. Community
dance groups from Russia, Poland, Tunisia, Norway and Germany
will attend the festival.
Debs finished the Yorkshire Marathon
Debs ran the Yorkshire Marathon on 9th October to raise money for
Brunswick.
Debs finished the 26 miles in 4 hours and 50 minutes. She raised
over £600.00 for Brunswick.
We are very proud of Debs for finishing the marathon!
‘Safe place’ meeting at the council offices on Thursday 22th
September written by Mamie
I went to a meeting with 60 people to talk about keeping people safe
in York.
I think it was lovely and interesting. I learned a lot. I learned ideas about how to keep
disabled people safe. I enjoyed listening to the presentations, it was good. I was
asked to give my opinion about the safe places scheme. It had something to do with
police offices and about places where people can go to for help. For more
information about the safe places York scheme please visit: www.yiln.org.uk

‘Access All Areas’ theatre workshop at York Theatre
Royal, written by Tristram
The theatre group is really good. We have a nice group. We
are looking for more members.
We do movements, mirror body movements and copy hand
movements. We learn about voices and how to warm-up when you sing. We learn to
sing and stuff like that.
We had a look back stage and looked at the costumes at York Theatre Royal. We
will do a performance for people on stage. All the people will come and see me.
Paula gave me a poster to let people know about the theatre workshop. We are
looking for people to join in the great fun. The theatre workshop is on Thursdays
from 10:30 until 12.30 at the De Grey Rooms.
On Thursday 27th October ‘Access All Areas’ have organised a one day theatre
workshop with the Dark Horse Theatre Group. This workshop is open for everybody
to attend. For more information please contact Paula Clark: ring 01904 715468 or
email: [email protected].
Making rugs written by Claire
My name Claire and I’ve been at Brunswick a long time. I used to work in the garden
a long time ago.
Weaving is easy and I like all the colours. I designed a rug for my room, it looks
good! I started by drawing a picture of the colours then I picked the wools. Rugs
take a long time to make. I also make beaded butterflies, hearts and beaded cards.
You can buy them at the Brunswick Shop, Blueberry at Silver Street and the
Blossom Street Gallery.
Leeks grown by Adriano and Chris written
by Michelle.
Adriano and Chris, who volunteers at
Brunswick, have worked hard all summer on
growing leeks at the walled garden.
Adriano and Chris have planted the leeks,
weeded the leeks, and looked after the leeks
all summer.
In the picture you can see Adriano and Chris
lifting the leeks and preparing them for
Brunswick shop. Adriano holds their first price
certificate from the York Organic Gardeners
Association.
Their leeks won first prize for taste at the York Organic Growers Association show. If
you would like to buy Adriano’s and Chris’s leeks please visit the Brunswick shop.
Sam’s riddle written by Sam
Hi i’m Sam and I am new to the Social Club and the area, I started
here to broaden my horizons, make new friends and to find new
contacts of some different places that I could go.
I am currently learning keyboard and making my own music which is one of my main
interests. My other interests include cartoons and films, tabletop roleplaying games
such as D&D, and card games such as yu-gi-oh. I am also into old retro video
games as well as new ones. I enjoy many puzzles but riddles are my favourite as
everyone can relate to them and I enjoy challenging people.
The answer to last months riddle: Mary's father has 5 daughters:
Nana, Nene, Nini, Nono. What is the fifth daughter's name?
The fifth daughter was called, Mary!
Here is this months riddle:
What flattens all mountains, wipes out all species, destroys every building, and
turns everything to pieces?
Photo shoot written by Alex
In the summer I went on two photo shoots with Ed. Ed is a volunteer at Brunswick
Social Club, he takes pictures of events.
The first one was in town. We went at 7.30 am when there were not many people
about. Ed let me use his camera it was good because it has great zoom. We
photographed the minster and the walls. The second time we went to Rowntree
Park in the afternoon. It was very hot and sunny. We saw lots of Canada geese. It
was difficult to take photos in the sunshine.
I love taking photos. I’m getting better, Ed is a good teacher. Ed and I will take
photos at the Pumpple Festival. Please come and see us if you would like your
picture taken
Events coming up and ways that you can support Brunswick
We need more carrier bags for the shop so that people
can take away all the lovely gifts they buy. If you have
carriers bags spare please pop them into the social club
office or the main office or the shop.
Thanks.
We need plant material for making our famous Christmas
Wreaths.
So if you have variegated holly or yew or pine, spruce or cedar
trees that need a bit of a prune tell us and we will arrange to
collect useful material.
If you can collect pine cones do pass them on to us as well.
Raffle tickets for the Pumpple Festival
If you would like to buy or sell raffle tickets, please ask the
office for raffle tickets. The tickets are 50p a tickets or £2.50
for a booklet. The first prize is £100.00 cash.
The raffle is at the Pumpple Festival, if you like you can buy
your tickets on the day.
We urgently need good quality tombola and raffle prizes for our Pumpple Festival. If
you would like to donate a prize or know somebody who could donate a prize please
contact the office.
Volunteering at Pumpple Festival
We require a little more help for Pumpple Festival. You could help us in different
ways. You could help out on the day, whether for the day or just for a few hours.
We usually need to help with things like clearing tables in the cafe, washing and
drying up (although we do have a dishwasher too!), running the raffle, tombola or
other stalls, helping to set up or tidy up at the end, and taking refreshments round to
people on stalls etc.
Or you could donate a cake for the café. One cake can usually be sold for around
£20 when cut into slices and so this is a great way of raising funds for us. Please
label the type of cake and any possible allergens, please list the ingredients used for
this reason.
We are very grateful for you help and support.
