ABOUT MEAL MIX® GROW & BLOOM Growing blends like nothing else on the market! M other Earth Meal Mix is an organic blend of amendments formulated by growers, for growers. These blends are a culmination of 20 years’ experience working with organic amendments. Meal Mix uses very carefully selected ingredients in order to bring you blends of organic meals and minerals of the highest quality. It is formulated to provide a balance of both short and long term release of availability due to the selection and proportions of ingredients blended together. This means that your plant will have what it needs, when it needs it, without compromise. This distinct mix of beneficial ingredients is intended to be used as an amendment to your favorite growing media either by blending into the media or as a top-dress or making teas. The Grow formula contains a large array of inputs as some of these components persist throughout the entire plant cycle. While the Bloom formulas replaces any ingredients depleted by the Grow and increased inputs that encourage vigorous fruit and flower production as well as intense fragrance and excellent oil production. By purchasing a pre-blended, consistent product like Mother Earth Meal Mix, you are also acquiring peace of mind that the ingredients are in the right proportions to make your plants thrive. You also get the convenience and time savings of not having to buy 15 different bags and mix them yourself. Mother Earth Meal Mix contains no filler or bulking ingredients. Some meals and minerals take extremely long to break down to have any significant impact on feeding the plant. Other ingredients act as bulking agents because they are not added in high enough amounts to have a positive impact. Greensand, talc and earthworm castings would be examples of these types of materials. Mother Earth Meal Mix Grow and Bloom are devoid of heavy metals or radioactive materials. We achieve this by selecting only the purist ingredients and avoiding things like rock phosphate and similar components that are known to have numerous potential contaminants. Mother-EarthProducts.com APPLICATIONS & USE USING MEAL MIX® GROW & BLOOM Top Dressing/Spoon Feeding If you’ve never used dry organic amendments before, here are some guidelines and options to help get you started. MEAL MIX® GROW From planting and through the vegetative period. OPTION 1 Blend With Soil: Thoroughly mix 2 to 4 cups per 1 cubic foot of soil (1/3 to 2/3 cup per gallon). Reapply as top dress (see “Option 2 – Top Dressing” below) every few weeks or as needed until the flowering stage (see Photo A, B & C). Letting the Meal Mix application “cook” for a few weeks before planting will increase the availability of nutrition. To enhance this process, moisten soil with compost tea solution. OPTION 2 Top Dressing: Evenly apply 2 to 4 cups per 1 cubic foot (1/3 to 2/3 cup per gallon of media) over the top of the soil. Cover Meal mix with 1 to 2 inches of soil to help keep it out of the light and ensure it remains moist (see Photo D, E & F). Reapply every few weeks or as needed until the flowering period. Spoon Feeding: Blend in or top dress 1 to 2 cups of Meal Mix per cubic foot as an initial charge; then top OPTION 3 dress 1/2 to 1 cup per 1 cubic foot (1.5 to 2.5 Tablespoons per gallon of media) of soil weekly until the flowering period. Upon application cover Meal mix with 1 to 2 inches of soil to help keep it out of the light and ensure it remains moist (see Photo D, E & F). Make Compost Tea: Add 2.5 Tablespoons per 1 Gallon of water of Meal Mix in a separate tea bag and top dress the sludge after the brew process. If you do this for every watering (2 quarts per container 2 times a week) you should be close to the weekly spoon feeding rate. If not, or only brewing tea once a week, top dress the difference. OPTION 4 Blending With Soil D E Distribute Meal Mix evenly around plant. F Work Meal Mix into top layer of soil. Cover with soil to keep moist and out of light. MAKING COMPOST TEA An excellent way to add nutrient enhancement for your plants. Compost tea increases the biodiversity of the soil by providing organic matter and beneficial bacteria, fungus and protozoa. These microbes form a symbiotic relationship with the plant that improves plant vigor through their formation of secondary metabolites and improving nutrient availability. Having high populations of diverse microbes improves nutrient cycling in the soil and protects the plants. Regular applications of compost tea will increase soil fertility, improve soil structure, and stimulates plant health. It is also possible to incorporate your fertility program into the teas. Adding Meal Mix into compost tea brews will provide a more diverse food source for the microbes. The microbes in turn will start to breakdown the Meal Mix which will lead to more efficient nutrient release once applied to your media. Just select the appropriate Meal Mix product for your plants stage (grow or bloom) and place it in a tea brewing bag. After the brew is complete, apply the Meal Mix from the tea bag onto your soil as a topdressing according to the recommended rates and carefully scratch into the top inch or two of the soil. Cover with a thin layer of fresh soil to protect from the light and avoid crusting. Be mindful of total application rate recommendations for Meal Mix to avoid under or over applying the product. Blending & Brewing: Fill your tea brewer to the appropriate gallon mark with unchlorinated water (rain catchment water works). Add your materials and then activate your aeration pump(s). It should be well aerated! Generally, you need a pump that will produce 0.08 CFM per gallon of tea (for example, to brew 5 gallons, use a pump that will produce at least 0.4 CFM). Keep compost tea at a temperature between 60-70ºF. Brew for 16-36 hours before applying. A B Place soil in container. C Pour in Meal Mix. Blend Meal Mix with soil. MEAL MIX® BLOOM From flowering initiation on (discontinue use the last couple of weeks before harvest or as needed). OPTION 1 Blend With Soil: If you transplant as your plants transition from vegetative to flowering period, blend at the percentage rate of new soil to old soil, then top dress the remaining percent. Use at the rate of 2¼ to 4½ cups per cubic foot (1/3 to 3/4 per gallon of media). For example, if you’ve been growing in a 5 gallon container and are transplanting to a 10 gallon container, blend 50% of your target application rate with the new soil and top dress the other 50% of your application rate evenly on the top of the old soil and cover with a generous layer of soil. Reapply as a top dress every few weeks or as needed. OPTION 2 Top Dressing: Evenly apply 2¼ to 4½ cups per cubic foot (1/3 to 3/4 cup per gallon of media) over the top of the soil. Cover Meal Mix with 1 to 2 inches of soil to help keep it out of the light and ensure it remains moist. Reapply every few weeks or as needed until the flowering period. Spoon Feeding: Top dress 1/3 to 3/4 cup per cubic foot (2 to 3 Tablespoons per gallon of media) of soil weekly until the flowering period. Upon application cover the Meal mix with 1 to 2 inches of soil to help keep it out of the light and ensure it remains moist. OPTION 3 Make Compost Tea: Add 2.5 Tablespoons per 1 gallon of water of Meal Mix in a separate tea bag and top dress the sludge after the brew process. If you do this for every watering (2 quarts per container 2 times a week) you should be close to the weekly spoon feeding rate. If not, or only brewing tea once a week, top dress the difference. As always, cover with fresh media to keep moist and out of the light. OPTION 4 Applying the Tea: As soon as the brewing process is complete, strain if necessary, into a secondary container (you just want to remove any debris that may clog a sprayer). If spreading on the soil, straining is unnecessary and just keep the tea well agitated until it is all applied. Top-dress the Meal Mix as described above. To reach your weekly application targets in this manner you may have to brew for every watering or top-dress unbrewed Meal Mix to make up the difference. • For spreading/spraying the liquid portion of the tea, you can dilute the mixture to half to one fourth of the original strength with non-chlorinated water or use full strength if desired. Use your standard way of irrigating, a pump sprayer or backpack sprayer to apply. DO NOT use a sprayer that has been used for chemical sprays. It could damage or kill the microbes. Even if you rinse it out, there is generally a residue left that makes it no good for organic spraying. • NEVER let your tea go anaerobic (no oxygen)! Sufficiently aerate with an air pump at all times. Don’t use tea that smells like alcohol, as it went anaerobic. • DO NOT use chlorinated water, as chlorine will kill the beneficial microbes.
