PILGRIMS KAYAK EXPED IN GREENLAND. A kayak expedition in total freedom among icebergs. Glaciers, trekking over the ice, polar wildlife, the Northern Lights Using soundless kayaks and in total freedom, we will travel across part of the Arctic, surrounded by a spectacular setting of icebergs and glacier fronts. A genuine expedition, in kayak, without a support boat to disturb the harmony of the trip, in total contact with the magical environment of one of our planet’s last frontiers and wilderness: the largest island in the world, Greenland. On our trip, we will have the exclusive privilege to explore several fjords on kayak, which will allow us to discover labyrinthine system of islands and outcroppings of land. August 26th - September 4th 2016 Or September 2nd - September 11th 2016 TASERMIUT, SOUTH GREENLAND EXPEDITIONS APS B-873 QASSIARSUK 3921 NARSAQ TEL/FAX: +299 522822 1 EXPEDITION HIGHLIGHTS Working with Injured servicemen. · Spectacular navigation among ice, icebergs and glaciers in an environment that is in complete harmony with untamed Nature, thanks to the isolation and self-reliant freedom.· Camping in front of Qaleraliq Glacier Front · Sighting of local fauna such as eagles, caribou, foxes and arctic hares, or even whales and seals. · Witnessing the northern lights, the “Dance of the Sky”, from one of the world’s most special areas. Since mid August. · Fishing for salmon and cod, mushroom gathering in July/August and cranberries (especially in the second half of August), and gathering of mussels for the group to eat. · · Visiting of Narsaq. Inuit settlement of 1500 inhabitans. Having first-hand experience of the dramatic progress of climate change in Southern Greenland, an area which offers a rare glimpse of the effects of global warming: glacier withdrawal, increase in the amount of ice that has broken of the glaciers, forest and new vegetation sprouting in terrain which for centuries could not sustain plant life… DAILY ITINERARY Subject to alteration but we hope to kayak at least 5 hrs a day Day 1 depart London Heathrow to Keflavik Overnight stay in guest house in Keflavik Day2 Keflavik International Airport – Narsarsuaq Arrival in Greenland, reception in the airport. Transfer to Narsaq by RIB boat; with about 1,500 inhabitants, it is one of southern Greenland's biggest cities. Introduction and preparation of equipment. Night in hostel. Day 3: Nuulussuaq Morning: transport to Qingaarsup Nunaa where we will start the kayak expedition. We will follow the coast of the island, along the ice covered fiord among big and small icebergs coming from Eqalorutsit glacier. We will travel through an area full of ringed seals. In this area, there is usually a greater density of ice, slowing down the kayak and sometimes even blocking access at certain locations. When we start the crossing to Nuulussuaq Peninsula through we get the first views of the ice Cap. Once we arrive to Nulussuaq, we will install our camp and have a rest in a peninsula which was one of the Viking settlements in South Greenland. Time for fishing arctic salmon, gathering mushrooms and cranberries. Night in Tents TASERMIUT, SOUTH GREENLAND EXPEDITIONS APS B-873 QASSIARSUK 3921 NARSAQ TEL/FAX: +299 522822 2 Days 4: Naajaat sermiat. We will travel into a labyrinthic system of islands and outcroppings of land. We will have different views of the ice cap and several glaciers, We will be impressed by unique and wild areas, as beautiful. We will paddle through a setting of lowslung islands, with waterfalls and alongside leafy tundra which contrasts with the blue and white of the icebergs. Several islands and peninsulas are separating Inlandice from Ikersuaq fjord. This magical landscape attracted the Vikings to establish settlements in several coastal areas. And of course we will camp in one of these former Viking settlements. Kayaking among blue icebergs provides us a special feeling of Arctic Nature. We will sail in Maniitsup Tunua fjord, surrounded by the peninsulas of Maniitsop, Niaqornap Nunaa and Nuulussuaq. We are just in front of the ice cap, camping no so far away from Naajaat Sermiat Glacier Font. This is time to allow our senses to enjoy the unbelievable views of one of the oldest masses of ice in the planet. This is not the only area that will surprise you. The next step will be special when we get so close to Qaleraliq Glacier. Night in tents. Days 5: Qaleraliq fjord. Today, we are sailing around Akuliaruseq Island (Caribou Island) which may allow us to admire this fauna approaching the coast or include the glacier front. Sailing along Qaleraliq fjord, we will arrive to Qaleraliq glacier with its three glacier tongues nearly 10 km wide, probably the most spectacular glacial scenary in south Greenland. We will camp in a sandy beach and at night, enjoying the thundering sound of the seracs breaking away in the area's magical silence. Night in tents. Day 6: Back on the kayaks we will continue the navigation along the glacier fronts, admiring the beauty of their vertical walls, ice walls and numerous icebergs as we approach them along their more than 10 kilometres descent to the sea. These glacier fronts extended in only one. But the dramatic progress of climate change divided it in three glacier fronts. We will install our camp in caribou island. During the night, we will be surprised by thunderclap roar of the icefall from seracs. Night in tents. TASERMIUT, SOUTH GREENLAND EXPEDITIONS APS B-873 QASSIARSUK 3921 NARSAQ TEL/FAX: +299 522822 3 Day 7: Ikerssuaq Fjord We will start the way back towards Qingaarsuup Nunaa Island, kayaking through Ikerssuaq Fjord. This is an area where the chances of seeing whales are greatest. Big icebergs use to decorate Ikerssuaq Fjord. These are enormous ice blocks coming from Eqalorusit and Qorooq Fjords. Sometimes you could be surprised by Greenlandic seals sailing in your way or staying over these icebergs. Nights in tents. Day 8: Qingaarsup. Narsaq City Depending on conditions in the fiord we will go directly to Qingaarsuup, or will cross Ikerssuaq direction Stephensen Havn which is a protected bay among a sea full of icebergs. This was an ideal settlement where Inuit established during hundreds of years and it’s called Manitsuarsuk. Ruins of the settlement can be seen. Catching seals, hunting foxes, birds, sharks… were the principal activities of Greenlandic settlers in this emplacement, up to 18 th century. Inhabitants were sometimes surprised by the arrival of polar bears “sailing” over the big icebergs coming from the eastern coast. Let be impressed by the Inuit history and discover one of the former Inuit settlements in South Greenland. Our sailing will continue towards Narsaq or we might be ending in Qingaarsup and then be transfered to Narsaq. Free time to visit the city, inuit market, hunters' harbour, church, leather shop, museum, etc. Night in hostel. Day 9 Transfer to Narsarsuaq. Time to walk around in the area and visit the local museum. Optional: Qooroq Ice Fjord It depends upon availability of boats. Need to be reserved with some days in advance. Flight Narsarsuaq - Keflavik (International Airport) Overnight stay in guest house in Keflavik Day 10 depart Keflavik to London Heathrow TASERMIUT, SOUTH GREENLAND EXPEDITIONS APS B-873 QASSIARSUK 3921 NARSAQ TEL/FAX: +299 522822 4 PILGRIMS KAYAK GREENLAND. The stages include 3 to 5 hours of rowing (15 to 20 km a day) with frequent stops and rest periods. In the two-person kayaks, those in better shape will be paired with those who are a little less fit, so that the group can be balanced. The trip is not recommended only for those with serious back problems, due to the difficulties that can result from carrying the kayaks from the beach to the water and back. We strongly recommend that those who are in doubt about their physical abilities take a shorter kayak trip in their home country. TASERMIUT, SOUTH GREENLAND EXPEDITIONS APS B-873 QASSIARSUK 3921 NARSAQ TEL/FAX: +299 522822 5 Difficulty It is not absolutely necessary to have had prior experience in a kayak in order to participate in our trip, because the kayaks are stable, wide and safe. Although if you haven't got any experience, is mandatory to take a course and practise all you can before the trip. Travelling in these kayaks is not technically difficult, and is only done when conditions are favourable. Those participants with prior experience in kayaking may choose to do the trip in an individual kayak (ask Tasermiut, South Greenland Expeditions before the trip). The expedition is carried out in direct contact with Nature, without any contact with civilisation from the time we leave Narsaq until our return to this settlement. Guide: Tasermiut, South Greenland Expeditions The trip will be accompanied by a veteran kayak guide, who has got several years' experience guiding kayak expeditions in hazardous environments. The Guide’s job is to point the group in the right direction, to ensure all travellers’ safety and to solve any possible problems that may arise along the itinerary, making changes or adjustments if necessary. Activities such as setting up the tents in the camp or taking them down, making lunch or other shared activities will be everybody’s responsibility, including the guide’s. TASERMIUT, SOUTH GREENLAND EXPEDITIONS APS B-873 QASSIARSUK 3921 NARSAQ TEL/FAX: +299 522822 6 * It is possible that different guides will be in charge of the group during the adventure stay. Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB boat) The navigation Narsarsuaq – Narsaq – Narsarsuaq will be done in a RIB-boat a Rigid Inflatable Boat, The Adventure boat by definition. The RIB boat is an open boat fast flexible and very safe. A special coat is provided for navigation. The RIB Boat allows the traveller to feel the elements and be one with them. Accommodation Hostel Accommodation in hostel. We will use sleeping bags at night. With shared rooms and facilities. Optional excursions Optional excursions should be confirmed upon arrival, in the information meeting of the first day. However, we recommend you confirm Optional Excursions in advance before arriving in Greenland. Qoorooq ice fiord Navigation by RIB boat to the spectacular ice fiord, usually fully covered by ice and icebergs. Qooroq is one of the most active glaciers that can be found in southern Greenland. We will navigate to the area where iceberg density will make it impossible to carry on, and which is without doubt one of Greenland's best images. Duration: 2 hours Group: minimum 6pax Price: 566dkk (76 €) per person Communication and Safety Main mobile telephone networks can be reached in the cities and in some parts on the coast. The guide will carry a satellite phone throughout the entire trip. At the start of the trip, the guide will share some basic tips on behaviour, safety and kayak self-rescue. While travelling in the kayak, each participant will wear a special suit and a life jacket. The expedition is carried out in an area of fjords where there are hardly any waves, and the winds are usually very light. Travelling in the kayak is only done when the conditions are optimum, and with few exceptions, along the coast. If there is an emergency, the guide will call a rescue boat, which will arrive within 2 to 3 hours –conditions permitting– to any point of the excursion and carry out an evacuation to the hostel or hospital in Narsaq if necessary. Board Breakfast: Coffee, tea, infusions, cocoa, powdered milk, biscuits, bread, jam, muesli and cereals. Packed lunch: Bread, cheese, chorizo, salami, ham, foie-gras, chocolate, nuts, biscuits, soup, hot tea… Dinner: Meals cooked at the camp. Fishing and Fruit picking All along the trip we will visit some very good areas to go fishing, especially for arctic salmon and cod. We do not provide fishing equipment. We therefore recommend you take it from your country or buy it at Narsaq. Mushroom (Boletus Edulis) and blueberry picking is season dependent, although August is the best month. Mussel collecting will be easy near some of the camps. Maps We will use topographic maps 1:250.000 Weather Weather in Greenland is very changeable. It is usually pleasant, but it is essential that you bring appropriate clothes for rainy weather. Temperatures are often more than 15ºC in July and between 5 º C and 10 º C in August. Mid-August nights are sometimes cold. In September, temperatures are usually between 5ºC to 8ºC during the day and may reach minus 5ºC at night. Ice conditions Eastern Greenland draughts bring great amounts of ice from the Arctic Ocean, which, sometimes, block Southern Greenland from May to mid-June. We may also come across ice that makes navigation difficult in July, but it is rare. If this happens we would take an alternative route instead. In August, the icefield poses no special problems and the sea in the region is full of icebergs. USEFUL INFORMATION FOR THE TRAVELLER Currency DKK: Danish crown. Approx. 1€ = 7,4606DKK. TASERMIUT, SOUTH GREENLAND EXPEDITIONS APS B-873 QASSIARSUK 3921 NARSAQ TEL/FAX: +299 522822 8 Language Kalaallisut, the Western Greenlandic language, is the main language in Greenland. It is spoken by 40.000 people, which makes it the most important Inuit language in the world. Inuhumiutut is also spoken in the North, and Tunumiutut in the West Coast. Most people in Greenland speak some Danish, which is the second official language. Many speak English too, with various levels of fluency, especially young people. Greenlandic has an agglutinating structure. It belongs to the Inuit-Aleut family of languages, and it is spoken by people in different areas, from the Aleutian Islands up to the west coast in Greenland. It is of Asian origin, as is the Inuit race. The country Greenland is one of the most singular countries in the world: A huge island that holds a glacier measuring two million square kilometres in size, surrounded by a coastal mountainous belt, bathed by a sea which due to its Arctic climate remains frozen most part of the year. Some 57.000 inhabitants, mostly Inuits depending on fishing, hunting and farming, live on the coast. Greenland is now semi-independent from Denmark. The most populated area is the west coast. 15.000 inhabitants live in Nuuk which is the capital of the country. Northern and Eastern Greenland are almost uninhabited. Transport Roads are almost non-existent, except in towns. The most common means of transport are therefore boats, planes and helicopters.
