OVERVIEW
This document describes the installation of digital, analog leased-line, dial network, and Switched 56 kbps digital
service interface cables used by the COMSPHERE 3000 Series Carrier. The installation of Network Interface
Modules, required for any dial-line or Switched 56 kbps digital service interface, is also described.
NETWORK INTERFACE MODULES
The COMSPHERE 3000 Series Carrier has a total of 17 slots. The first slot, Slot 0, is reserved for the Shared
Diagnostic Unit (SDU). The remaining 16 slots can house up to 16 Data Service Units (DSUs) or 16 dial/leased
modems or a mixture of both. The digital, analog leased-line, or dial network interface for these units is provided
through 50-pin connectors located on the rear of the carrier.
The carrier is divided into two halves, Slots 1 through 8 and Slots 9 through 16. If devices installed in Slots 1
through 8 are DSUs and/or leased-line modems, then the network interface uses the 50-pin plug-type connector
labeled P21. Likewise, for Slots 9 through 16, the network interface uses the 50-pin plug-type connector labeled
P22.
However, if any device installed in Slots 1 through 8 or Slots 9 through 16 is a dial modem and/or a DSU with a
V.32 or Switched 56 Dial Backup Module (DBM), then a Network Interface Module (NIM) must be installed.
The NIM for Slots 1 through 8 attaches to connectors P23 and P24. Likewise, if dial modems or DBMs are
installed in Slots 9 through 16, the NIM attaches to connectors P25 and P26.
There are a total of nine different NIMs (see Table 1). One NIM, feature number 3000-F1-025, is used for the
DSU with 4-wire Switched 56 DBM (SJA57); another NIM, feature number 3000-F1-003, is used for the
V.32 DBM (RJ21X) or the 2-wire Switched 56 DBM. The remaining NIMs are either programmable (RJ27X) or
permissive (RJ21X). Programmable NIMs correct any loss in the transmit signal level between the modem and
the central office by permitting the modem to transmit at the optimum signal level. This is accomplished by the
local telephone company installing a resistor into the network interface demarc and is identified by an RJ45S-type
jack for single-line equipment or an RJ27X-type for multiline equipment. Permissive NIMs used for standard
dial-line connections are identified by RJ11C-type jacks.
Additional features available for both programmable and permissive NIMs are Service Line and Make Busy. The
Service Line feature permits an extra dial line to be connected to a COMSPHERE 3000 Series Carrier. NIMs with
this feature are identified by the two modular connectors mounted on the NIM. Permissive NIMs are also used for
2-wire Switched 56 kbps connections.

The Make Busy Feature ties the Tip and Ring signals together through a resistor so that the modem appears busy
to the PBX.
WARNING
To not violate FCC and DOC regulations, a NIM with the Make Busy feature
must only be used behind a user’s PBX.
Make Busy is not used by DSUs with DBMs installed and will not affect the DBMs’ performance. However, if a
DBM or a dial or APL modem uses a NIM with this feature, it must be used behind a PBX.
Table 1 shows NIMs available for dial-line and Switched 56 kbps networks.

* Although it is recommended that you avoid mixing DSUs with 4-wire Switched 56 DBMs and DSUs with V.32
DBMs in the same carrier half, you can mix these DBMs by using the 4-wire Switched 56 NIM and wiring the
appropriate leads to the 66A-punchdown block. For pinouts, see Table 11. (DSUs with V.32 DBMs and DSUs
with 2-wire Switched 56 DBMs may be installed in the same carrier half.)

NETWORK INTERFACE CABLES
Network interface cables connect the carrier to the digital, analog leased-line, dial, or Switched 56 kbps network
interface demarc. Two basic types of cables are used: a plug-to-socket 50-pin mass termination cable and a 50-pin
modular plug conversion cable.
A 50-pin mass termination cable (see Table 2) can be used to extend the distance between the carrier and the
demarc or can be used if the network interface to the carrier is via a 66A-punchdown block. This cable has 50-pin
connectors at each end. The socket-type connector attaches to the rear of the carrier and the plug-type connector
attaches to either a 66A-punchdown block or a 50-pin to modular plug conversion cable.

In environments where modular-type interface wiring is used instead of a punchdown block, a 50-pin to modular
plug conversion cable is used. This cable has one socket-type 50-pin connector (attaches to the rear of the carrier)
that branches out to eight modular plugs (see Figure 1). Each modular plug is labeled 1 through 8 to correspond
with device locations in Slots 1 through 8 or Slots 9 through 16.

NETWORK INTERFACE CABLE INSTALLATION
Two 50-pin connectors (P21 and P22) provide the carrier’s digital and analog leased-line network interface.
Connector P21 serves Slots 1 through 8 and connector P22 serves Slots 9 through 16 (Figure 2). Refer to Table 3
to determine if your network interface cable is compatible with DSUs and leased-line modems residing in the
same half of the carrier.
Preform the following procedures when connecting a network interface cable to the COMSPHERE 3000 Series
Carrier and appropriate demarc. Use Figure 2 as a reference for connector locations.
NOTE
For digital and analog leased-line installation in Canada, a special network interface
cable is provided (feature number 3000-F1-009). For installation of a 2-wire
Switched 56 kbps network connection, the cable provided is an SJA48 adapter
cable (feature number 3600-F2-505). Follow the installation procedures listed
below, only substituting the 3000-F1-009 interface cable or cable for the 50-pin to
modular plug conversion cable described in Step 5.
1. Connect the 50-pin mass termination network interface cable’s 50-pin socket to the 50-pin connector
(labeled P21) on the rear of the carrier for Slots 1 through 8.
If Slots 9 through 16 are used, connect the 50-pin socket to connector P22.
2. If a right-angle cable is used, secure the cable by attaching a cable tie to the cable near the hood at the
carrier’s cable-tie attachment point. If a straight-in cable is used, disconnect the cable-tie, remove the
screw and cable-tie mount, and fasten the cable with two screws.
3. If the 50-pin mass termination cable is to be attached to a 66A-punchdown block, continue with Step 3. If
the 50-pin mass termination cable is used as an extension cable, go to Step 4.
Attach the plug end of the network interface cable to the 66A-punchdown block (the DSU and/or
leased-line demarc). Installation of the 50-pin mass termination cable is completed.
4. Attach the plug end of the network interface cable to the socket connector on the 50-pin to modular plug
conversion cable.
5. Attach the proper modular plug to the proper DSU or leased-line demarc.
The modular plugs are labeled 1 through 8 and correspond to the devices in those slot positions in the
carrier. For example, for Slots 1 through 8, modular plug 1 is wired for the device in Slot 1, modular plug
2 is wired for the device in Slot 2, and so on.
For Slots 9 through 16, modular plug 1 is wired for the device in Slot 9, modular plug 2 is wired for the
device in Slot 10, and so on.
This completes the digital, analog leased-line, or Switched 56 kbps network interface cable installation.

NETWORK MODULE INTERFACE INSTALLATION
If a dial modem, an analog leased-line modem using dial backup, or a DSU with a DBM is installed in a
COMSPHERE 3000 Series Carrier, then a Network Interface Module (NIM) must be attached to the carrier’s
backplane. Prior to the NIM installation, verify whether your dial connection is programmable (RJ27X) or
permissive (RJ21X).
To install a NIM on the carrier’s backplane, refer to Figure 3 for connector locations and perform the following
steps:
1. For Slots 1 through 8, seat the NIM on connectors P23 and P24 located on the carrier’s backplane. If Slots
9 through 16 are used, attach the NIM to connectors P25 and P26.
2. Use the four screws provided with the NIM to secure it to the carrier.
This completes the NIM installation.

A 50-pin connector on each NIM provides the carrier’s dial network or Switched 56 kbps digital service interface.
The NIM attached to P23 and P24 (located above connector P21) serves Slots 1 through 8, and the NIM attached
to P25 and P26 (located above P22) serves Slots 9 through 16. Refer to Table 4 to determine if your cable is
compatible with the NIMs used.
To connect a network interface cable to the COMSPHERE 3000 Series Carrier and appropriate demarc, refer to
Figure 4 for connector locations and perform the following steps:
1. For Slots 1 through 8, connect the network interface cable’s 50-pin socket connector to the 50-pin
connector on the NIM located above connector P21. If Slots 9 through 16 are used, connect the 50-pin
socket to the NIM located above P22.
2. Use a small screwdriver to tighten the screws on each side of the cable connector.

the 50-pin mass termination cable is used as an extension cable, go to Step 4.

4. Attach the plug end of the network interface cable to the socket connector on the 50-pin to modular plug
conversion cable.
