Mr & Ms YUKATA Competition
Objective
The competition aims at enhancing the
understanding among Japanese language learners on
some aspects of the Japanese social etiquettes
through:a) the appreciation of the beauty and elegance of
the Japanese YUKATA; as well as

4.1 YUKATA: You must wear full yukata, ie with obi
and appropriate footwear . Cross-dressing in NOT
allowed. Accessories may be used but should not
inhibit movement.
4.2 Male contestants will be judged under the Mr
Yukata category and female contestants under
the Ms Yukata category.

Rules and Regulations
This must be read together with the ‘Competition
Common Rules of the 2017 JLfest’.
1. ELIGIBILITY
This is an individual competition and has no age
limit.
2. NUMBER OF ENTRANTS
There is no limit to the total number of contestants.
3. PRIZES
 Mr & Ms Yukata
 Mr & Ms Yukata (1st Runner-up)
 Mr & Ms Yukata (2nd Runner-up)
Certificate & Prize
All remaining contestants shall receive a Certificate of
Participation. However, finalists who are unable to
participate in the final shall not be given a certificate nor
any form of recognition.
Prize-winners who are eligible for KAMENORI
FOUNDATION AWARD will be invited to a selection
interview (if they wish) at the end of the festival ie April
30, 2017. For details, please refer to JLfest 2017
webpage.
4.3 Elimination Rounds and Finale
There will be 2 elimination rounds (on Apr 29) to
select five (5) couples (5 males & 5 females) for the final
to be held on Apr 30, 2017.
a) In Round One (1), contestants will be asked to
dance the ‘tanko bushi’ dance in the circle. 12
couples will be selected to proceed to Round
Two (2).
b) In Round Two (2), the shortlisted 12 couples
will do the catwalk and 5 couples will be
selected to proceed for the Final.
c) In the Final, the 5 couples will do the final
catwalk individually. During the catwalk, they
will be asked to: i. introduce themselves creatively;
ii. answer 2 questions; and lastly
iii. say a few words in Japanese to garner
votes from the judges.
5. SELECTION AND JUDGING CRITERIA
Contestants will be judged under the following criteria
 Posture, movement and mannerism in wearing
the YUKATA
 Proper wearing of the YUKATA
 Accessories and Creativity
 Japanese speech (applicable to the finalists only)

6. JUDGING PANEL
The judging panel shall be appointed by the
organizers. Decision of the panel is final. The panel
may also exercise sole discretion to make or withhold
an award.
7. DISQUALIFICATION
The contestant will be disqualified if found, in the
opinion of the organizers:a) Wearing inappropriate yukata (eg yukata of the
opposite sex or containing offensive motifs,
obscene images, advertisement, religious icons,
etc)
b) Using abusive language;
c) Behaving in a vulgar or offensive manner;
d) Disturbing or jeopardizing other contestants; and
e) Refusing to follow instructions from the
organizers.
8. LIABILITIES
The organizers assume no liability for personal injury or
personal loss of property during the competition.
Sign-up Period
March 1 - 31, 2017
Sign-up Procedure
a) Sign up online (using the password given).
b) After signing up, print out the competition form
and signed it. Have it endorsed, if required.
c) Bring that form along to the festival and submit
it to the competition secretariat before the
competition starts. You may also need to show
your MYKad, driving licence or student card for
identity verification. Failing which you may not
be allowed to compete. Incomplete competition
form will not be accepted.
NOTE
Participants from secondary schools
are required to sign up for the competition through
their Japanese language teacher.

You are advised to come to the Festival in your YUKATA. But if you could only dress up at the festival, the organizers
shall try to find a suitable changing room. However, the organizers do not guarantee that the changing room would
be comfortable as well as the safety of your belongings. Please check with the information counter for the location of
the changing room.
