Located within the Powhatan Creek Watershed, Ford’s Colony has 46 retention ponds to assist with storm water
management. These retention ponds are also considered best practices in water conservation since they capture excess
rain water that is then used instead of irrigation in watering Ford’s Colony Homeowners Association common area
landscape and the ClubCorp owned Ford’s Colony Country Club’s golf courses.
Effective Self-Governance
Formed in 1985 under developer control, it is now self-governed through a seven-person elected Homeowners
Association Board of Directors assisted by over 200 Ford’s Colony resident volunteers serving on 12 standing
committees and associated support services committees. A Managing Agent and staff handle daily operations.
Ford’s Colony is a 3,200 acre, gated community with just over 2,400 single family homes, 80 townhouses and 24 condo
units and about 500 privately owned undeveloped lots. In 2015, there were 50 new homes built. The average sales price
of a single family home sold in 2015 was $508,850. Home listing prices ranged from $260,000 for a smaller townhouse
unit to $2 million for a single family residence.
A Multi-Generational Place to Live
Ford’s Colony has over 5,400 residents including working professionals in business, government, education, healthcare
and the military; semi-retired professionals; and retirees.
Based on 2016 public school enrollment, there are 373 school age children residing in Ford’s Colony attending K-12
public schools. This number does not include Ford’s Colony children attending Walsingham and other K-12 private
schools in the area or college-age residents attending William & Mary or Thomas Nelson Community College. A quarter
of the 184 households moving into Ford’s Colony in 2015 had children under age 19.
Volunteer Spirit in Action
Ford’s Colony residents are highly engaged civic volunteers participating in a wide range of organizations benefitting
James City County and the greater Williamsburg area such as the following:

ervice organizations (James City Lions Club, Kiwanis, Rotary, League of Women Voters, Women’s Club, DAR and
S
SAR).
l
Education (Over 20 volunteer as Literacy for Life instructors; 35 Ford’s Colony Volunteers for Education serve an
average of 10 hours a week as mentors in the public schools; 21 retired executives serve as William & Mary Mason
School of Business Executive Partners; and nearly 600 residents participate in the Christopher Wren programs).

ealth care services (Over 130 volunteer at the local hospitals, Olde Towne Medical & Dental Center (OTMDC) and

the Lackey Clinic. Ford’s Colony residents have donated $750,000 to OTMDC over the past 21 years. Last year’s
contribution was $70,000. OTMDC served 19,327 low-income patients in FY 2014-2015. Residents have also raised
over $209,000 to support breast cancer research).

esidents serving in S.C.O.R.E. (Senior Core of Retired Executives) provide business guidance to local

entrepreneurs and business start-ups.

4 volunteers offer Williamsburg area seniors and low to moderate-income residents fee-free tax preparation

assistance through AARP’s Tax Aide program and the VITA (Voluntary Income Tax Assistance) program.

4 residents have participated in the Master Gardeners Program and individually worked an average of at least

30-70 volunteer hours a year on various educational and community landscape maintenance projects in the JCC/
Williamsburg area.

Effective Security and Emergency Response Team
Members of the Ford’s Colony Security Department are trained in first aid, and its patrol unit receives certification as
Special Conservators of the Peace.​They work closely with and supplement the JCC police and fire departments. In
addition to patrolling the 50 miles of FCHOA maintained road to help enforce traffic regulations, in 2015 the FC Security
team completed 22,990 house checks and provided 333 medical assists.
The James City County trained Ford’s Colony Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) has been in place since
2004. The current team of 20 resident volunteers works to help the Ford’s Colony community and its residents prepare
for, respond to and cope with the aftermath of natural disasters when local first responders who provide fire, rescue and
medical services will not be able to meet the demand for these services.
