Aston, John
A Dream of Jewelled Fishes
John Aston's superb fishing autobiography
ranges from the boyhood quest for perch in
Yorkshire's West Riding, through salmon
and carp fishing to his first love, wild trout
on small streams in North Yorkshire. Witty
and erudite, this is a modern fishing book,
by a child of the sixties for whom fly-fishing
is 'rock and roll fishing', and whose angling
references are very likely to be Frank Zappa
or Hemingway. It will charm anyone who
appreciates fine writing about the
countryside.

keys, the middle-aged brain is more vigorous,
organized, and flexible than has been previously
believed.

difference

Anglican minister, to share a powerful vision on why

Wainwright, Martin
Morris Minor: the biography
Designed by Sir Alec Issigonis back in 1948,
the Morris Minor or Morris 1000 was in a sense
Britain's answer to the Beetle - a bulbous little
creation that was also Britain's first massappeal car. Between then and 1972 when
production belatedly ceased some 1.6 million
were built. It was the kind of car in which the
district nurse did her rounds. It was a car you
felt safe in. It is now 60 years old, and Martin
Wainwright, (who proposed to his wife over the
gear stick of a Morris Minor), gives us a quirky
and fascinating history of this quintessentially
British car.

Wyatt, John
No mercy from the Japanese
By the laws of statistics John Wyatt should not be
alive to tell his story. During the Malayan campaign
his regiment lost two-thirds of its men. More than
300 patients and staff in the Alexandra Military
Hospital, Singapore were slaughtered by the
Japanese. Twenty-six per cent of soldiers slaving on
the Burma Railway died. Many died on the Asaka
Maru, which was torpedoed, and the Hakasan Maru,
the second grim hellship that took on survivors.
Many more POWs did not survive the freezing
Japanese winter of 1944/45. Yet John survived all
these traumatic events and his chronicle makes a
humbling and unforgettable book.

of a child, and the mysterious death of the
eleventh member of the group. Their
remarkable story, which captures what it
was like to go from girlhood in the sixties to
middle age in the millennium, is a testament
to the deep, enduring bonds of women.
