Phonics across the school.
What is Read Write Inc.
Phonics?
A systematic and structured programme that
teaches children the sounds in our language
(phonics) and how to read.
The aim of the programme is to get children off
Read Write Inc. Phonics. We want your child to
learn to read as quickly as possible!
Who is Phonics for?


Phonics is taught from the beginning of Year R and continues for Year 1
and 2 pupils.
Children who read fluently and have completed the Phonics programme,
move onto Read Write Inc. Literacy and Language. Mrs Chrus teaches
Literacy and Language at Moorings Way.
How does it work?

Children learn 44 sounds and the matching letters
or groups of letters.

Learn to blend sounds to read words.

Learn to spell words using the 44 sounds.

Read the Read Write Inc. story books.
Sound Pronunciation
Watch the sound pronunciation guide.
Now its your turn to practise…
You can help your child at home by using pure
sounds. Try not to add ‘uh’ after the sound to help
your child blend.
Set 1 and 2
Children learn
the Set 1 sounds
before moving on
to Set 2.
Your child can
then spell any
word using these
sounds.
Set 3
Child learn Set 3
sounds once they
know Set 1 and 2.
They learn the
different ways
the sound can be
written in
English (a
grapheme).
How do phonics help us read?
This is Fred.
Fred can only talk in sounds.
He says “c-a-t.” Not cat.
We teach children to say the individual sounds in a
word which we call Fred Talk. The children then
read the whole word for Fred, which is called
blending.
How do phonics help us spell?
Fred helps children learn to spell.
Children turn words into individual sounds.
They press the sounds they hear on
to their fingers. We call this Fred Fingers.
Let me demonstrate with a few words – mat, light,
see.
How do we assess the children?




Children are regularly assessed to see what
sounds they know and the words they can blend to
read independently.
The children are tested on their ability to read
real words (sun, mum) and nonsense words (flup,
thip).
The assessment is used to decide how to group
children for teaching.
It is important that children have no gaps in their
phonic knowledge. They need to be secure before
moving on!
How are children grouped?



Children are grouped by their stage within Read
Write Inc. Phonics and not their age.
When you see the programme in action, you will
see that children are taught in mixed age groups
at the level that is right for them.
The regular assessment means that children can
move rapidly through the various stages and then
on to the Literacy and Language programme.
