MIJAS FOREIGNERS DEPARTMENT — INFORMATION ON: August 2012 HOW TO CHANGE FOREIGN EU-LICENCE PLATES INTO SPANISH ONES All vehicles with foreign licence plates legally must be changed to Spanish plates once that you take out your official residency in Spain. These are some guidelines what the Traffic Department will ask for upon registering your vehicle with Spanish licence plates: • Application form to be filled-in (can be downloaded from www.dgt.es – “matriculación ordinaria de vehículos”) • Fee to be paid of 92,80 Euros for cars, for motorcycles 25,80 Euros • Personal documents: ID-card or passport plus NIE- or Residence Certificate • Car documents: ITV-card with pink and blue copy and sales contract in case of a sale. • You first will have to check at the local ITV station whether your technical certificate from your home country (“certificado de características”) will be sufficient so that you can be issued with a “certificado de conformidad”. For British vehicles contact the DVLA in Swansea. Also some right hand vehicles cannot be imported (please check this with the ITV station). Vehicles recently purchased may already have an European certificate/document that enables the car being technically homologized. However, if you purchased an older second hand car, it is possible that first of all, you will have to obtain new Spanish technical car documents. • Receipt of road tax paid at your local town hall. You will have to present the ITV-card with the pink and blue copy to do so. • Receipt of registration fee on the vehicle paid at “Hacienda” (form 575, 06 or 05 – for more information and tax office address, visit webpage www.aeat.es • Import tax to be paid at the Junta de Andalucía (Calle Compositor Lemberg Ruíz at Malaga), if the car is second hand and has been purchased in another EU-country (sales contract will have to be legally translated into Spanish). The Traffic Department will then issue you with Spanish car documents. Also, you will have to contract a car insurance. With regards to returning licence plates of your home country, contact your local consulate or embassy as some may assist you in the de-registration (usually against a fee). These are guidelines only as the way of exchanging your European licence plates into Spanish ones may vary upon nationality and age of the vehicle. You also may contact a “Gestoría” specialized on car importation, especially if you do not speak Spanish. Take your car documents and ask for a cost estimation, to decide whether or not you want to proceed with the change to Spanish licence plates. In some cases it may be more economical to sell your vehicle and buy an already Spanish registered car.
