Emmaus High School Volume 15, Issue 1 September 2015 Dear Parents and Guardians: Welcome back for what I am sure will be another outstanding year here at EHS! Our students have returned to a clean building, an energized faculty and staff, and a school year full of unlimited possibilities. As always, we expect great things from Emmaus High School students, and this year’s student body will, no doubt, exceed our expectations. We also expect greatness from our administration, faculty, and staff. Given the amount of turnover we have experienced in the last eight years, we decided it was time to “refresh” our expectations and discuss our vision for the future. On August 27, the faculty and administration created a shared vision and outlined expectations for our behavior moving forward. The following is a small sample of that discussion. Our vision for EHS is to create an environment in which all members bring positive energy to the building daily, we remain committed to continuous learning for all, respect is mutual and pervasive throughout the organization, relationships are valued, there exists a spirit of kinship, and a safe environment is maintained for all members of our school community. Please be reminded that this Thursday evening, September 17, we will hold our annual Meet the Teacher Night at 6 pm. The evening will provide you a wonderful opportunity to visit, walk through your child’s schedule, and meet his/ her teachers. Please remember that this is not a time for individual conversations about your child, but rather a time to learn about our curriculum and expectations. Conversations regarding your individual child can be scheduled with the teachers at a later date or take place at Parent Teacher Conferences in December. Communication with parents and students will again be a primary goal for the 2015-16 school year. Students’ grades, attendance, and discipline can be viewed in real time via the Home Access Center (HAC). In addition, parents can receive up-to-date information by subscribing electronically to ENews Alert and/or the Principal’s Newsletter on the EHS website. Last, InTouch K-12, our automated phone messaging system, will be used periodically to announce important news or upcoming events. Parents should verify their InTouch K-12 contact information via the Home Access Center website. Please be sure to indicate the phone number at which you would like to be contacted in the event of an outgoing message. As always, please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns. If you have an issue related to your child’s class, please contact the teacher directly. If you have other questions or concerns, you should contact your child’s guidance counselor or grade level assistant principal. If you are not satisfied at either level, please feel free to contact me at 610-965-1650. Thank you for your ongoing support. Sincerely, David F. Family Connection is a fantastic tool to assist with postsecondary planning. Family Connection allows your child to: FROM THE OFFICE OF: • Get involved in the planning and advising process – Build a resume, complete personality and learning style inventories, and manage timelines and deadlines for making decisions about colleges and careers. • Research colleges – Compare GPA, standardized test scores, and other statistics to actual historical data from our school for students who have applied and been admitted to colleges (based on the statistics from the EHS Class of 2014 and 2015). • Research careers – Research hundreds of careers and career clusters and take various career assessments. • Create plans for the future – Create goals and to-dos and complete tasks assigned by the school to better prepare your student for future college and career goals. • Request and track submission of school documents to colleges – The Counseling Office uses Family Connection to securely and efficiently transmit high school transcripts, recommendations, and other important information to colleges. • Sign up for meetings with college and career representatives that visit EHS. Family Connection also allows the counselors to share information with students and parents, who are registered, about upcoming meetings and events, local scholarship opportunities, and other resources for college and career information. Any parent who has not yet registered on Family Connection, should contact their child’s counselor to receive a registration code. Parents of ninth grade students will receive a mailing later this fall with this information. Students in every grade level will be meeting in groups with EHS counselors this fall to work with this program. PrepMe As a reminder, PrepMe is a tool available to students in Family Connection. PrepMe is an online SAT tutoring resource. The student is asked to complete a diagnostic test in Reading, Math, and Writing. Then, the program creates an individualized plan for the student based on his/her specific needs. The plan even includes a timeline for completing the practice activities. We hope students will take advantage of this program to assist them in preparing for the SAT. The link can be found on the Welcome Page in Family Connection. It is under the “Resources” heading on the left side of the screen. Be on the lookout for a new online SAT prep resource in Family Connection that will assist students in preparing for the redesigned SAT, which will begin in March 2016. That link will be available soon on the Welcome Page in Family Connection. The EHS Counselors are now on Twitter! Follow the EHS Counseling Office @CounselorsEHS for updates and important information. 4 COUNSELING PSAT/NMSQT INFORMATION FROM THE OFFICE OF: The PSAT/NMSQT will be administered at EHS on Wednesday, October 14th at 8:00 AM. The EHS counselors recommend that all college-bound eleventh graders take this test. This year's PSAT/NMSQT will be reflective of the redesigned SAT, which will begin in March 2016. Registration began on September 14th in the Counseling Office. Due to space constraints, there are a limited number of tests available. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. The deadline to register, if tests are still available, is Tuesday, October 6, 2015. The cost to take the test is $22. If paying by check, please make payable to Emmaus High School. The PSAT/NMSQT or Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test measures the reading, math, writing and language skills students have developed over the course of their education. The first unexcused late is a warning. Upon the second and third late to school occurrences, a half-hour after school-detention will be assigned. For the fourth late to school occurrence and any additional occurrences, the student will be referred to their grade level assistant principal for additional discipline consequences. Students who arrive late or get picked up for an appointment should be dropped off or picked up at the Main Office entrance (Door #1). 6 SAP FROM THE OFFICE OF: What is SAP? The SAP team is here to help parents access school and community services for their children. The program identifies issues that pose a barrier to a student's learning and school success. Student Assistance Programs are state mandated in all secondary schools in Pennsylvania. How does the program work? When someone recognizes any change in behavior that impacts student success, his/her name is referred to the SAP team. A referral may come from any of the following individuals: counselor, administrator, teacher, parent, or another student. Students may also refer themselves. If deemed necessary, a team member calls home to invite parents to a meeting to discuss the concerns. What happens at the meeting? Team members meet and explain the concerns to parents. Parents are presented with a variety of options to help their children. If parents are interested in the program, they sign a consent form. The team will then begin to assist students to overcome the barriers that they are experiencing. What are the benefits of the Student Assistance Program? · Help foster a team approach to problem solving · Enhance positive school experiences for all students · Provide support for parents and students Do you see your child showing any of these behaviors? · Withdrawing from family, friends, and/or school · Depressed or anxious · Defying authority, both at home and at school · Acting aggressively · Lying · Needing money without an explanation · Sudden drop in grades · Experimenting with drugs or alcohol If you are concerned about your child, please contact the SAP team at 610-965-1650 ext. 21926 to discuss your concerns. You may also contact your child’s counselor for help. 7 FROM THE OFFICE OF: MAIN OFFICE Please be advised that the following protocol is followed when visitors enter Emmaus High School through the Main Office located on Macungie Avenue. Math Contest Club During the month of September, all teachers in the math department have sign-up forms for the Pennsylvania Math League Club. All club members will be taking part in our two major contests – the Pennsylvania Math League and the American Math Competition (AMC). The Pennsylvania Math League contests are 6 half-hour tests given during the school day once a month from October to March. The AMC is a 75-minute test given during the school once a year in February. The content for both tests is primarily algebra and geometry, with occasional questions in probability, trigonometry, and sequences. All math contests require logic and reasoning beyond the usual math curriculum, so students who join PA Math League as freshmen and sophomores benefit greatly from several years of attempting problems and studying the solutions given after the contest. Students who achieve high scores in PA Math League will receive information about other competitions throughout the school year. Teams have competed in contests at Princeton, Bucknell, Millersville, and Lehigh Universities and Muhlenberg College. We have also been participating in a contest specifically for prospective engineering students. Those who wish to participate in these contests are encouraged to practice after school in Mrs. Hoffert’s classroom. 8 American Red Cross Club Blood Drive The American Red Cross Club will hold a blood drive during the month of November, during the school day; the date will be announced. The drive will be held in the auxiliary gym and more information will be available at our sign-in table in the cafeteria during the last half of October. Parents may contact Mrs. Sherwood at [email protected] with questions. American Red Cross Club of EHS Is Sponsoring a Summer Book Drive The American Red Cross Club of Emmaus High School will sponsor a Summer Reading Book Drive during the month of October as club members place collection boxes in the English classrooms. Students are encouraged to donate their summer reading books and receive a voucher for each book. The vouchers may then be exchanged in the spring for the books on the next year’s reading list. Last year’s Red Cross members collected and distributed over 1,000 books. Please encourage your child to turn in summer books and participate in this project! If there are any questions, contact Mrs. Sherwood, the club advisor, in Room 567. Key Club As we transition from summer to fall and the new school year begins, the Emmaus High School's Key Club is preparing for another fantastic year. Key Club is among the largest and most recognized clubs at EHS, primarily due to our large involvement in community service activities. An affiliate with the local Kiwanis Club, Key Club's focus is to bring together high school students to make a difference in the Emmaus community. At the same time, the Key Club tries to help students develop positive character traits and leadership skills. Like the Kiwanis Club, the EHS Key Club works with other organizations such as Cops N Kids and the Special Olympics. In the past, Key Club has enjoyed assisting organizations such as The Ronald McDonald House, Leukemia and Lymphoma Societies, UNICEF, and Cops N Kids. Key Clubbers have the opportunity to participate in events such as the Special Olympics and the Celebration of Reading. Key Clubbers can also participate in Kiwanis events such as the Easter egg hunt, and the pancake breakfast. The EHS Key Club meets on scheduled Thursdays in café 1 at 2:45 PM. Our meeting dates for 20152016 are: 9/10, 9/17, 9/24, 10/1, 10/8, 10/22, 11/5, 11/19, 12/3, 12/17, 1/7, 1/21, 2/4, 2/18, 3/3, 3/17, 3/31, 4/14, 4/28, 5/12, 5/26, 6/2. Failure to obey the following regulations or falsifying any information will result in the withdrawal of parking privileges and additional disciplinary actions will be assessed, as prescribed in the Emmaus High School Discipline Code: · Parking in unauthorized areas on school property will result in detentions and eventual loss of parking privileges for the remainder of the academic year. · Parking in restricted red permits only assigned lots, administration visitor assigned lots, parking in faculty/staff assigned lots, parking on school property without a permit, or parking with an unregistered vehicle will result in ticketing by the Emmaus Police Department and, when necessary, towing at the owner’s expense. · After a student’s 4th late to school, the student may lose late arrival and/or early dismissal privileges in addition to losing parking privileges for the reminder of the semester. The issuance of a permit guarantees the student ONE parking spot. All students who accept the Emmaus High School Parking Permit understand that the issuance of the parking permit is subject to the following rules and regulations during the 2015-2016 school year: · Students will drive safely on and near the campus. Reckless driving will result in Saturday detentions and/or loss of parking privileges, as described on page 4 of the Discipline Code. · Students will be cautious when driving in the parking lot. The speed limit is 10 mph. · Students will be considerate of the Emmaus High School neighbors by obeying ALL traffic and parking regulations. · Students will park only in the approved WHITE spaces in the Emmaus High School parking lots designated to be student lots. · Students will not go to their cars during the school day, without explicit permission from a high school administrator. · Students will display the Emmaus High School parking tag on the back of the rearview mirror AT ALL TIMES, and it must be visible from the front of the vehicle. · East Penn School District does not assume liability for damages or stolen property. · Parking permits are non-transferable. Students who lose their original tag will be charged $5 for a replacement, if available. 16 Computer Science Opportunities in the East Penn School District Best in the Valley One of the many exciting opportunities that we had during our 4 In-service days prior to the start of the school year was hearing a keynote address by Rich Kiker, followed by a hands-on workshop on Wednesday, August 26. Rich is 1 of 5 Google for Education Partners for Professional Development and a top-rated Google Education Trainer and he shared with us many ways of integrating technology into the classroom. His background in education started as a computer science teacher at Palisades High School, so we discussed how important it is for students to know how to create new technologies as well as to know how to use them. I also had an incredible opportunity this past summer to get together with 6 former EHS graduates while taking a 6-week trip across the US with my daughter. Paul Nakada, class of 1985, continues to support the computer science program at EHS after he was fortunate to be at the ground floor of 2 start-up Internet companies in the late 80’s. Roshni Cooper, class of 2003, is completing a Doctorate at Stanford in Computer Science, and Paul Rigge, class of 2009, is working on his Doctorate at UC Berkeley in CSEE. Piotr Fidkowski, class of 2005, is working for Google at their Mountain View, CA, campus and gave all of us a tour and a free lunch while we were in the Bay area. We also visited with his brother, Chris, class of 1999, who is an Associate Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, but he said he uses programming and computational methods all of the time. We also saw Tom Collins, class of 1988, who said that taking the AP Computer Science course his senior year made all of the difference in his future opportunities in the field. Even though there are many classes available to students and the numbers continue to grow, many students still miss out on the chance to get a good foundation in computer science before graduating because the courses are still seen as electives that are less important than many other options. Many female students shy away from these courses as well when they could benefit greatly from having that background. As a result, I have created two Middle School Creative Computing clubs that meet on Tuesdays at Eyer and Thursdays at LMMS. Google has created an entire program worldwide for this venue entitled CS First, which we hope to use this year. During the first two weeks of school, the Advanced Computer Science Topics class has had lively discussions about the 7 Big Ideas of Computer Science – Creativity, Data Abstraction, Data and Information, Algorithms, Programming, the Internet, and Global Impact – which will be highlighted in the new AP Computer Science Principles exam coming in 2016-17. It is not too early to think about Computer Science Education Week that will be December 7 – 13, 2015 and our kickoff Computer Science Showcase on Thursday, December 3, from 8 – 9 PM after Parent-Teacher Conferences at the high school. Become a participant in the best CS the Lehigh Valley has to offer. Student accident insurance can help you manage the possibility of out-of-pocket expenses, since many group insurance policies no longer pay full hospital and medical expenses and may require a deductible or co-insurance. There are two plans available for your consideration: Plan #1 School Time Coverage – Costs $30 per student – This will cover injury occurring while the student is traveling to and from school, while attending school sponsored activities such as plays, assemblies, class trips, intramural sports, gym and physical education classes, etc. Plan #2 24 Hour Coverage – Costs $116 per student – This will cover all of the above, plus accidents occurring away from school, in the evenings and on weekends, vacations, etc. Please note that the plans should be considered in conjunction with any other family medical insurance you may have. If you have any questions, please call an Insurance Broker at American Management Advisors directly at (215) 946-8888 between 8:00a.m. and 4:30 p.m. American Management Advisors, Inc. P.O.
