Join members of BASS (Black Alumni Society of Salesianum) as the entire Salesianum
community celebrates the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday with a dinner, featuring a
performance by the Wilmington Diocese Gospel Choir and a keynote address from James Kane,
the Executive Director of the Delaware Criminal Justice Council. This event is free, but

Listen to a reading from Dr. King’s famous 1967 speech, “Where We Are Going”; music of the
prototypical funk band, The Meters and more! The Music School is pleased to once again
present the Twin Poets, Delaware’s poets laureate, as well as the winner of this year’s
Jacqueline Beach Faulcon Scholarship

Cultural Crossroads: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Black History Tribute

This annual concert pays tribute to Dr. King through works by African-American composers and
musicians. Performances include voice, piano, guitar, storytelling and recitations. A visual art

MLK JR. COMMUNICATION CONTEST

Christ Church and YWCA Delaware are pleased to present the second annual Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. Communication Contest. Many notable leaders and organizations within the
Wilmington community have lent their support for this competition. The MLK Communication
Contest is designed to challenge high school students to develop and communicate their ideas
using poetry, speech, and/or rap, reflecting on Dr. King’s legacy while sharing their proposed
action for change within the Wilmington community.

Delaware Art Museum Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

“Continuing the Legacy” MLK Day of Service seeks to empower young people to find their own
way to continue the struggle for justice in 2017. This will be an opportunity for youth to come

parents. There is no fee to attend.

All members of the community are invited to walk in solidarity to bring focus to the issue of
homelessness in Delaware. Join the “Housing Not Handcuffs Community Justice Walk” to
advocate for more affordable housing and for the protection of humanity and dignity of those
experiencing homelessness and who are at risk of homelessness.
NO TICKETS are required to attend the Housing Not Handcuffs Community Justice Walk.

Sussex County Volunteer Delaware 50+ Advisory Council Food Drive
Date: Saturday, January 14
Time: 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
Locations: Giant in Millville, DE (Town Center Drive); Giant in Long Neck, DE (John J. Williams
Highway); Giant in Rehoboth Beach, DE(Lighthouse Plaza Blvd.); and Render’s in Milford, DE
(Lexus Drive).
The Sussex County Volunteer Delaware 50+ Advisory Council will participate in the Martin
Luther King Jr. Day of Service by collecting donated food items. Suggested non-perishable items
for donation are canned soups and vegetables, canned fruit and juices, and canned meats and
fish. Also needed are rice, noodles, pasta and sauces, boxes of mac and cheese, packages of
instant oatmeal, pancake mix and syrup, peanut butter, jelly and crackers. Sussex Volunteer
Delaware 50+ Advisory Council members will deliver items to the Sussex County State Service
