PHASE 2: Use the data above to calculate five additional statistics, using the formulas shown below.



Arithmetic (crude) density = Population / total land area
Physiological density = Population / arable land area
Natural population change = CBR – CDR
Demographers and statisticians also consider the effects of migration on a country’s population. Net migration rate (NMR) is the
difference between the number of people entering a country every year (immigration) and the number of people leaving a country
every year (emigration). The overall population growth rate (PGR), then, needs to account for natural changes (birth and death
rates) as well as changes related to relocation (net migration rate). These rates are all reported as per 1,000. Population growth rate,
however, is expressed as a percent (%, which literally means “per hundred”); to convert a “per 1,000” number to a “per 100”
number, you simply need to divide by 10. The formula appears below:

Population growth rate = (CBR – CDR + NMR) / 10
Finally, it is often useful to estimate the length of time it would take for a population to double if it continued growing at the current
rate. Note that a population will only double if it is increasing. The formula for estimating the doubling time (expressed in years)
appears below.

Approximate doubling time = 70 / population growth rate
