GEOG 110 – Population Demographics Assignment NAMES (please work in PAIRS) PHASE 1: Use the CIA World Factbook site to look up the requested information for these three countries: Units Total land area Arable land Convert metric English units % Syria 185,180 SQ KM Nigeria 71,498 SQ MI 923,768 SQ KM 24.9% Ukraine 356,669 SQ MI 603,550 SQ KM 233,032 SQ MI 38.97% 53.85% 177,155,754 44,291,413 Population PEOPLE 17,951,639 Crude birth rate PER 1,000 ppl 22.76 38.03 9.41 Crude death rate PER 1,000 ppl 6.51 13.16 15.72 Net migration rate PER 1,000 ppl -113.51 -0.22 -0.06 2.68 5.25 1.3 15.79 74.09 8.1 Infant mortality rate CHILDREN PER WOMAN PER 1,000 LIVE BIRTHS Life expectancy YEARS Total fertility rate M: 61.4 F: 75.84 M: 51.63 F: 53.66 M: 63.78 F: 74.86 PHASE 2: Use the data above to calculate five additional statistics, using the formulas shown below. Arithmetic (crude) density = Population / total land area Physiological density = Population / arable land area Natural population change = CBR – CDR Demographers and statisticians also consider the effects of migration on a country’s population. Net migration rate (NMR) is the difference between the number of people entering a country every year (immigration) and the number of people leaving a country every year (emigration). The overall population growth rate (PGR), then, needs to account for natural changes (birth and death rates) as well as changes related to relocation (net migration rate). These rates are all reported as per 1,000. Population growth rate, however, is expressed as a percent (%, which literally means “per hundred”); to convert a “per 1,000” number to a “per 100” number, you simply need to divide by 10. The formula appears below: Population growth rate = (CBR – CDR + NMR) / 10 Finally, it is often useful to estimate the length of time it would take for a population to double if it continued growing at the current rate. Note that a population will only double if it is increasing. The formula for estimating the doubling time (expressed in years) appears below. Approximate doubling time = 70 / population growth rate Units Syria Nigeria Ukraine Amount of arable land SQ MI 24.9% of 71,498 = 17,803 sq mi 38.97% of 356,669 = 138,994 53.85% of 233,032 = 125,488 Arithmetic (crude) density PPL / SQ MI 17,951,639 / 71,498 = 251.1 ppl/sq mi 177,155,754 / 356,669 = 496.7 44,291,413 / 233,032 = 190.1 Physiological density PPL / SQ MI ARABLE LAND 17,951,639 / 17,803 = 1008.3 ppl/sq mi of arable land 177,155,754 / 138,994 = 1274.6 44,291,413 / 125,488 = 353.0 Natural population change PPL / 1000 22.76 – 6.51 = 16.25 ppl/1000 38.03 – 13.16 = 24.87 9.41 – 15.72 = –6.31 Population growth rate % (22.76 – 6.51 – 113.51) / 10 = –9.7% (38.03 – 13.16 – 0.22) / 10 = 2.46% (9.41 – 15.75 – 0.06) / 10 = –0.64% Approximate doubling time YEARS Negative growth rate; never doubling 70 / 2.46 = 28.5 years Negative growth rate; never doubling
