Spanish 1 Syllabus
Señora Rogers
¡Bienveniedos a la clase de Español!
Welcome to Spanish class!
In this course we will be developing the foundations of the Spanish language. We will become familiar with the
Spanish alphabet, the sounds of the letters, simple sentence structure, and how verbs are conjugated. We will
study proper pronunciation. We will study the vocabulary that will allow you to have simple conversations: to
describe yourself, to describe your home and your town, to ask for and follow directions, to place an order in a
restaurant, and other conversations.
We will also be learning about Spanish speaking cultures. We will study about the basic geography, customs,
traditions, holidays, traditional foods and clothing, and other interesting facts about the various Spanish
speaking countries.
Tips on Learning a Language
Language consists for 4 aspects: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. You will have specific
assignments that will help you to develop each of these skills. When learning a new language, you will
get out what you put in. The more you speak in the new language, the faster you will acquire the new
language.
Participation
It is expected that each student with participate in class. Participation includes being alert and paying attention
during the class, responding to questions asked by the teacher or other presenters, involvement in group
activities, and being prepared for class discussions. This also includes having the necessary equipment for
participation, including a headset and microphone.
Grading
Grades will be assigned in five areas, with each area earning the following percentages of the grade:
Assignment Area
Percentage Explanation
Tests
20%
We will have a test at the end of each unit covering the information we studied.
The end of semester tests will be cumulative. There will also be vocabulary and
spelling tests for each unit.
Quizzes
20%
There will be a quiz each week based on the information we study in class and
the homework.

You will have one cultural project each semester. This will include a class
presentation, with visuals, and a research papers. These will be due at various
times during the semester, depending on the country you choose. The paper will
be due the same day as your class presentation.
There are several different types of Daily and Weekly Assignments you will be
required to complete:
¡Bienvenidos!
Each class will begin with a ‘Bienvenidos’ (Welcome) presented by an assigned
student.
Translating Sentences:
On these worksheets, there will be sentences in either Spanish or English, and
you will translate them.
Daily and Weekly
Assignments
35%
Vocabulary Worksheets:
These worksheets will help you develop and practice vocabulary we discuss in
class.
Recordings:
You will be asked to speak on particular subjects or to read specific information
and to submit the recordings. These recordings will help you develop your
pronunciation and confidence in speaking.
Dictation:
You will have the opportunity to complete dictation assignments, where you will
write down recorded sentences. This will help you develop your listening skills.
Verb of the Week
10%
You will find the Verb of the Week on the Weekly Assignment sheet in the
Announcements tab. Using the skills you develop in class, you will give the
meaning of the word, conjugate, and use it in a sentence. This will be due at the
end of each week.
Late Work
All assignments will be marked with a due date and time. Assignments not submitted by the cutoff time will not
receive credit. Exceptions may be made in the event of an emergency, on a case by case basis.
