Date set: Monday 14th September
Hand in by: Monday 28th September
Year Seven, this Key Homework Project requires you to complete three tasks which are linked to the
unit of work you are studying based on survival. You will be expected to read, write and use
research skills.
Task 1
Read the extract from the novel, ‘Lord of the Flies’
(This is glued into your Homework Book)
Now:
a. Where words have been highlighted in bold, annotate your extract to explain or suggest
what these highlighted words mean. This will help you to understand what kind of
impression is given of the island. (Use a dictionary to help you)
Then answer the following questions:
b. What atmosphere is created here?
c. What impression does the writer want us to have of the island?
You will need to pick out some of the key words from the extract as evidence to support your
answers. You will be expected to write developed answers and to select at least 4 ideas from the
extract to show that you understand how description can contribute to the impression of a place.
You should aim to write two detailed paragraphs in response to this task.
d. Now check your writing for spelling, punctuation and sense.
e. Choose one sentence and rewrite it to show that you can make an improvement.
Task 2
Using Research skills to create a Fact File
Use the internet or the library to research the story, ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ by Jonathan Swift.
Create a Fact File page in your Homework Book to include 10 to 20 interesting facts about the story.
This can be word-processed or hand written.
Please do not copy and paste. We are looking to see that you can find information and select key
and interesting facts. Feel free to be as creative and imaginative as you like with the presentation of
your Fact File.
