Function and system design
Measuring principle
The amperometric sensor is based on the conversion of the measuring variable chlorine in electrical current.
Two electrodes covered by an electrolyte are in contact to the medium via a membrane. It has a platinum
working electrode and a silver halogenide coated counter or reference electrode. The chlorine compounds
contained in the medium diffuse through the membrane. The constant polarisation voltage between the two
electrodes instigates the electrochemical reaction of the chlorine compounds on the working electrode. The
resulting current is measured as a primary signal (amperometric measurement principle). It is proportional to
the chlorine concentration within the sensor’s operating range and only slightly pH dependant for this type of
sensor. The primary signal is converted by the amplifier electronics of the sensor into a 0 ... 5 µA output signal
which is displayed by the transmitter.
Function
The sensor CCS120 is a membrane-capped amperometric two electrode sensor. It is used for continuous
measurement of total chlorine.
Total chlorine consists of free chlorine (HOCl, OCl-) and bound chlorine (chloramines).
To calibrate the measuring system, determine the content of chlorine using the DPD 1 / DPD 4 method. To
do so, you need a photometer with the pertaining reagents. The determined value is the calibration value for
the transmitter.

Chloromax CCS142D
Digital sensor with Memosens technology for determining free chlorine
Membrane-covered amperometric sensor for process and drinking water
applications
Application
Oxidants such as chlorine or inorganic chlorine compounds are
used to disinfect water. They must be dosed immediately,
depending on the operating conditions. If the concentrations are
too low, this could jeopardize the disinfection process. On the
other hand, concentrations which are too high can cause
corrosion, skin irritation and affect the taste of the water.
The CCS142D chlorine sensor is used to measure free chlorine
in the following areas:
• Drinking water
• Process water
• Industrial water treatment
Your benefits
• Sensor with digital signal processing:
– Not sensitive to electromagnetic interference thanks to
digital communication with the transmitter
– Calibration data saved in the sensor, making it possible to
calibrate at any transmitter or location and install
subsequently at the measuring point
• Ultimate measuring reliability:
– Measurement practically independent of the flow at flow
velocities above 15 cm/s (~0.5 ft/s)
– Long calibration and maintenance intervals
– No change in measured value in the event of fluctuations in
conductivity
• Membrane-covered sensor, therefore:
– Easy membrane replacement thanks to prefabricated
membrane head
– Minimum maintenance
• Zero-point calibration not required. No complex installation
of an activated carbon filter, as found with open chlorine
sensors

Function and system design
Measuring principle
The concentration of free chlorine is determined according to the amperometric measuring principle. The
hypochlorous acid (HOCl) contained in the medium diffuses through the sensor membrane and is reduced to
chloride ions (Cl-) on the gold cathode. On the silver anode, silver is oxidized to silver chloride. The electron
release of the gold cathode and electron acceptance on the silver anode result in a current flow which is
proportional to the free chlorine concentration in the medium under constant conditions. The concentration
of hypochlorous acid in the medium depends on the pH value. This dependence can be compensated by
measuring the pH value in the flow assembly.
The transmitter transforms the current signal into the measuring unit concentration in mg/l.
Function
The membrane-covered sensor CCS142D consists of a cathode (working electrode) and an anode
(counterelectrode) in an electrolyte which is separated from the medium by a membrane. The membrane
prevents the electrolyte from leaking and protects against contaminant penetration.
The measuring system is calibrated by determining the free chlorine based on the DPD method (photometric
method). The calibration value determined is entered in the transmitter.
Measuring system
A complete measuring system consists of:
• A CCS142D chlorine sensor
• An assembly, e.g. Flowfit CCA250
• A Memosens data cable CYK10
• A transmitter, e.g. Liquiline CM44x

Installation
Installation instructions
Flow assembly
The flow assembly CCA250 is designed for on-site installation of the sensor. In addition to the chlorine or
chlorine dioxide sensor, a pH and an ORP sensor can be installed. A needle valve regulates the flow within the
range of 30 to 120 l/h (7.9 to 31.7 US.gal/h).
When installing the sensor, note the following:
• The flow must be at least 30 l/h (7.9 US.gal/h).
If the flow drops below this value or stops completely, this can be detected by an inductive proximity switch
and an alarm signal plus locking of the dosage pumps can be triggered.
• If the medium is fed back into a surge tank, pipeline or the like, ensure that the thus generated back pressure
on the sensor does not exceed 1 bar (14.5 psi) and remains constant.
• Negative pressure at the sensor, e.g. by feedback of medium to the suction side of a pump, must be avoided.
For further installation instructions, see the Operating Instructions of the flow assembly.
Immersion assembly
Alternatively, the sensor can be installed in an immersion assembly with threaded connection NPT ¾",
e.g. CYA112.
Please note the following when installing the sensor:
• Hold the sensor securely in position and screw the assembly handtight onto the sensor. This prevents the
cables from twisting and cable rupture.
• To improve the sealing effect, we recommend you wrap a thin PTFE tape around the thread for assemblies
with an NPT ¾" thread.
Additional installation instructions can be found in the Operating Instructions for the assembly.

CCS140 and CCS141
Sensors for free chlorine
Amperometric, membrane-covered sensors for installation in the
CCA250 assembly
Application
Oxidising agents such as chlorine or anorganic chlorine
compounds are used for disinfection of water. Their dosing must
be carefully controlled to suit the application. Too low a
concentration makes the degree of disinfection questionable.
Too high a concentration can result in corrosion effects,
impairment of taste or skin irritation.
The CCS140 and CCS141 chlorine sensors are applied for
measurement of free active chlorine in the following fields:
• Drinking water treatment
• Pool water treatment
• Industrial water treatment
Your benefits
• Minimum flow rate for installation in the CCA250 flow
assembly: 30 l/h
• Measurement almost independent of flow rate in the range
above 30 l/h
• No zero point calibration necessary. This means complicated
installation of an active carbon filter, as in open chlorine
sensors, is not necessary.
• Measured values are not affected by conductivity fluctuation.
• The CCS140 sensor is ready for measurement after a
polarisation time of approx. 30 ... 60 minutes. The CCS141
sensor requires 45 ... 90 min.
• Easy membrane replacement thanks to ready-made
membrane head
• Recalibration intervals approx. 1 ... 4 months under constant
operating conditions
• Back pressure up to 1 bar / 14.5 psi allowed at the outlet

Function and system design
Measuring principle
The concentration of free chlorine is determined according to the amperometric measuring principle. The
hypochlorous acid (HOCl) contained in the medium diffuses through the sensor membrane and is reduced to
chloride ions (Cl-) on the gold cathode. On the silve anode, silver is oxidised to silver chloride.
Function
The membrane-capped CCS140 / CCS141 sensors consist of a cathode serving as the working electrode and
an anode acting as the counter electrode. These electrodes are immersed in an electrolyte. Electrodes and
electrolyte are separated from the medium by a membrane. The membrane prevents the loss of electrolyte and
the penetration of contaminants. The CCS140 and CCS141 sensors are used for measurement of free chlorine.
To calibrate the measuring system, determine the content of free chlorine using the DPD method. You need a
photometer with the pertaining reagents. The determined value is the calibration value for the transmitter.
Measuring system
A complete measuring system comprises at least:
• Chlorine sensor
• Liquisys M CCM223/253 transmitter
• Special measuring cable
• Flow assembly
• Reference measuring instrument for determination of free chlorine according to the DPD method

CCS240 and CCS241
Sensors for chlorine dioxide
Amperometric, membrane-covered sensors for installation in the
CCA250 assembly
Application
Chlorine dioxide is used for disinfection of water. Its dosing
must be carefully controlled to suit the application. Too low a
concentration makes the degree of disinfection questionable.
Too high a concentration can result in corrosion effects,
impairment of taste or skin irritation.
The CCS240 and CCS241 sensors are applied for measurement
of chlorine dioxide in the following fields:
• Drinking water treatment
• Pool water treatment
• Industrial water treatment
Your benefits
• Minimum flow rate for installation in the CCA250 flow
assembly: 30 l/h
• Measurement almost independent of flow rate in the range
above 30 l/h
• No zero point calibration necessary. This means complicated
installation of an active carbon filter, as in open chlorine
dioxide sensors, is not necessary.
• Measured values are not affected by conductivity fluctuation.
• The CCS240 sensor is ready for measurement after a
polarisation time of approx. 10 ... 30 minutes. The CCS241
sensor requires 45 ... 90 min.
• Easy membrane replacement thanks to ready-made
membrane head
• Recalibration intervals approx. 1 ... 4 months under constant
operating conditions
• Back pressure up to 1 bar / 14.5 psi allowed at the outlet

Function and system design
Measuring principle
The concentration of chlorine dioxide is determined according to the amperometric measuring principle. The
chlorine dioxide (ClO2) contained in the medium diffuses through the sensor membrane and is reduced to
chloride ions (Cl-) on the gold cathode. On the silve anode, silver is oxidised to silver chloride. The electron
release of the gold cathode and electron acceptance on the silver anode result in a current flow which is
proportional to the chlorine dioxide concentration in the medium. This process takes place within a wide pH
and temperature range.
The transmitter transforms the current signal into the measuring unit concentration in mg/l.
Function
The membrane-capped CCS240 / CCS241 sensors consist of a cathode serving as the working electrode and
an anode acting as the counter electrode. These electrodes are immersed in an electrolyte. Electrodes and
electrolyte are separated from the medium by a membrane. The membrane prevents the loss of electrolyte and
the penetration of contaminants. The CCS240 and CCS241 sensors are used for measurement of chlorine
dioxide.
To calibrate the measuring system, determine the content of chlorine dioxide using the DPD method. You need
a photometer with the pertaining reagents. The determined value is the calibration value for the transmitter.
Measuring system
A complete measuring system comprises at least:
• Chlorine dioxide sensor
• Liquisys M CCM223/253 transmitter
• Special measuring cable
• Flow assembly
• Reference measuring instrument for determination of chlorine dioxide according to the DPD method

Installation
Installation instructions
The flow assembly CCA250 is designed for on-site installation of the sensor. In addition to the chlorine or
chlorine dioxide sensor, a pH and redox sensor can be installed. A needle valve regulates the flow within the
range of 30 ... 120 l/h (7.92 ... 31.68 US.gal/h).
When installing the sensor, note the following:
• The flow must be at least 30 l/h.
