GEORGIA – DOMINICAN REPUBLIC Economic Development Connection Government & Commerce Trade Relationship The Embassy of the Dominican Republic in Washington, D.C. has jurisdiction over the state of Georgia. José Tomás Pérez serves as Ambassador to the United States. The Dominican Republic joined the U.S. - Central American Free Trade Agreement in 2007, making more than 80% of U.S. exports of consumer and industrial goods to the country duty-free. Since the Dominican Republic’s implementation of CAFTA Georgia’s exports to the country increased by 71.5% (from 20072014), while U.S. exports to the Dominican Republic increased by 30.2% (from 2007-2014) In 2004, the Dominican Republic joined the United States in the Dominican Republic-Central America Free Trade Agreement. Originally, the agreement was called the CAFTA and encompassed the United States and the Central American countries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. After the Dominican Republic joined the negotiations, the agreement was renamed DR-CAFTA. Georgia has one sister city agreement with the Dominican Republic: Atlanta – Salcedo. The relationship focuses on educational, cultural and commercial exchange. Parque Atlanta, at the entrance of the city of Salcedo, was dedicated in 2006 to honor the 10-year sister city partnership. The Dominican International Association and the Atlanta-Salcedo Sister Cities Committee celebrated the Dominican Republic’s 168th anniversary of independence in February 2012. EXPORTS: In 2014, Georgia exports to the Dominican Republic totaled $299.7 million. The Dominican Republic is currently the 29th largest export market for Georgia. Top exports from Georgia to the Dominican Republic include cereals, cotton, food preparation items, soybean oilcake and other residues, kraft paper and poultry. Georgia leads the nation in the export of the following goods to the Dominican Republic: cereals and poultry. IMPORTS: In 2014, Georgia’s imports from the Dominican Republic totaled $71.34 million. The Dominican Republic ranks 62nd among Georgia’s import nations. Top imports from the Dominican Republic include articles of apparel and clothing, medical instruments, sugars, insulated wire and plastics. Capital Investment There are at least 7 Georgia companies that have operations in the Dominican Republic: Delta Air Lines EIS Inc. Hooters of America Inc. NCR Corporation PrimeGlobal Rollins Inc. UPS Transportation Delta Air Lines offers daily direct flights from Atlanta to Punta Cana and Santo Domingo. The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) in Savannah has an established relationship with two ports in the Dominican Republic. GPA offers two weekly shipping services to Caucedo and one weekly service to Rio Haina.
