The New Deans Learning Community has scheduled an important meeting
that includes discussions that are critical to the evolution and growth of

at night?” Where are your biggest challenges as a new dean, and how
can we help as a group to resolve these (and help you get a better night’s
sleep!)? We also plan to gather for an informal, self-pay lunch on Sunday
to continue the discussion, networking, and sharing of ideas.

As business deans, we all have our own goals (fundraising, alumni
engagement, getting faculty to be more productive, managing our
schools while at the same time being part of the larger university). But
to achieve our goals, we must work with others on campus (and beyond)
who may have different goals. How can we work with those whose
goals do not align, and may even compete, with ours? In this interactive
session, participants will consider various situations that we deal with
on a regular basis. We will discuss how best to work with others to
achieve our goals and, if possible, convince those others that what we
want them to do will also be to their benefit!

(A4) Boosting Gender Diversity in Business Schools
Grand Salon B
Gender inequality in business schools is still an urgent topic in most
countries. In particular the so-called leaky pipeline—referring to the
loss of female faculty along the career paths at business schools—is
a crucial issue in modern faculty management at higher education
institutions. The increasing demand to recruit talented young
researchers in order to keep up with the necessity of innovation and
excellence makes the topic of how to attract female faculty urgent.
Therefore, the session will address the topic of gender diversity
and how it can contribute to the performance of business schools.
The panelists will present statistics on gender diversity and provide
an overview on what schools are doing to address it. Furthermore,
presenters will discuss the concept of multidimensional performance
measurements necessary to foster gender diversity and gender
equality in academia at business schools.

Business schools have the potential to provide learning opportunities
for a wide variety of individuals, at different points in their career
life cycle. In this highly interactive session we will explore strategies
business schools can use to facilitate lifelong initiatives. Specific

research and education on the one hand, and societal applicability
and relevance of management practices on the other. Participants
will engage in roundtable discussions on selected subtopics that,
at the end of the session, will be collected and problematized.
Subtopics include, but are not limited to, the following questions:
How can education and research feed into advancements in
management practice for the benefit of business and society? How can
advancements in management practice inform education and research?
How can business schools make better use of their alumni networks?

(B4) From Conflict to Collaboration: Engaging and Managing Faculty
Grand Salon B
In Herding Cats, Garrett and Davies quoted, “Academics do not
respond well to managerialism or rules or instructions.” One of their
interviewees also said, “Academics like to lead but they do not
like being led. I often felt more like a gardener—watering a little
here, weeding a little there, trying to cross-fertilize or simply trying
to make things grow where the long shadows from the giant trees
(professors) made it difficult for anything to grow.” Simply put, cats
do not like to be herded. In this session, we will explore and share
various experiences and practices related to “managing faculty”:
How do we motivate our faculty? How do we resolve conflicts? How
do we deal with difficult and awkward faculty? How do we establish
new and different guidelines and policies? How do we lead changes?
How do we avoid stimulating negative emotions in implementing
changes? How do we repair hurt feelings and remove barriers? The
session will be very interactive, and you will have a chance to ask
questions and also share your own experiences.

Plenary II: Cultivating People-First Cultures
Grand Ballroom A/B
Not all organizations are created equal. “This is how we do things
here” is no longer an acceptable answer in a world that is in
constant disruption. Organizational and learning leaders must break
through their status quo thinking and behaviors to create peoplecentric workplace environments that foster transformational change.
Global and technology advances have created the demand to rethink
the way organizations hire, develop, and retain talent. Demographic
shifts and the constant competitive necessity to upskill are disrupting
how people learn. Trends are shifting to innovative platforms and
programs that encourage and enable self-development. Most CEOs
report that their companies are not developing skills fast enough or
leaders deep enough, even though mobile devices make learning
potentially available everywhere at any time. Presenter Rita Bailey
will explore her perspective on assessing cultures—happenstance
or deliberate, redesign, or new start. She will also share stories and
examples of traditional, disruptive, and immersive structures that
support sustainable people-centric cultures.

Plenary III: What Drives B-School Students: Beyond
Demographics to Core Motivations
Grand Ballroom A/B
The Graduate Management Admission Council® (GMAC) has developed
a global segmentation effort that provides actionable insights about
prospective and current graduate management education students.
Designed specifically to understand candidate motivations related to
pursuing a graduate business degree and school selection, the research
has identified seven unique segments around the globe. Learn how
resulting insights can be applied to any school’s class mix, leading to
new ways for schools to connect with prospective students, influence

(C1) B-Schools as Enablers of Global Prosperity
Grand Ballroom C
Business school collaborations with organizations and industry
clusters can help guide the research agendas, execute new
discovery projects, and develop platforms for amplifying the impact
of schools that seek to foster good. In this session, presenters will
share examples of business schools having positive socioeconomic
impact and discuss the role of business in helping society prosper.
The session starts with the presentation of two different business
schools in two different emerging economies. The co-presenters
will show some of the major needs in their societal context that the
school can address or can help change. Then they will give examples
from both sides on how they work on education and research with
other stakeholders, and particularly companies and government,
to increase their impact. The two different approaches will explain
the links between mission, vision, and the aims of engagement and
impact. A large part of the session is devoted to the exchange of
ideas, practices, questions, and solutions among participants.

(C3) Crisis Management
Grand Salon A
While we all hope a crisis never occurs at our schools, the reality is that
a crisis of some type (and magnitude) will occur during your time as dean.
Faculty, staff, and students will look to you, as the leader of the school, for
guidance. How do you prepare for a crisis? How do you respond to the crisis?
Can you manage a crisis? If handled properly, a crisis can be mitigated and,
in some cases, can make the school stronger. In this session, three deans
will share their stories of crisis on their campus and how they handled it.
In a very interactive, discussion-based format, practical advice and insight
will be shared what worked well, what did not work well, etc.).

Identify the positives from a crisis

The number of minority business professors in the U.S. has more than quadrupled since
our founding in 1994. This academic year participating universities are illustrating a clear
commitment to creating a diverse academic environment and have the distinct advantage of
recruiting from our network of more than 1,600 minority faculty and doctoral students.
The PhD Project is also focusing on the need for diversity in administration, having found
fewer than 25 African-American, Hispanic American and Native American Deans at nonHBCU business schools in the U.S. Our Project AHEAD, Achieving Higher Education
Administration Diversity, encourages tenured minority faculty to explore positions in administration and provides resources, support and mentors to help members pursue this path.
