Painting Supply List
Paper:
12”x18” (or something close to that)White spiral or other bound drawing paper pad or "book"
100 sheets each for class notes, compositional drawings, and inspirational notes
18”x24” White 100 sheet drawing paper pad
paper – your choice bound or loose with portfolio for daily painting
Tracing paper pad (8 ½”x 11” or larger)
Brushes:
brushes – cheap, natural bristle, unpainted wood handle – under $1 each 1”&2”
and/or and assortment of foam brushes
one BIG "round" brush
one BIG 1" flat brush
Other brushes that you want - add as you go YOU MUST HAVE SOME GOOD BRUSHES!
Watercolor: these brushes may be "sablette" or other sable imitation or other solutions
Oil: choice of bristle or sable types
Acrylic: choice of any type of brush - remember any paint that dries in the brush STAYS in the BRUSH
Tempera: choice of any brushes
note: you can add in more brushes as you go as you find what you like
Other Stuff:
palette knife(s) for mixing the artist oils and acrylics
Gesso or flat white house paint
disposable (paper) palette or scrap cardboard or other surfaces from paper plates to palettes with covers
rubber gloves
spoons for getting paint from jars
squeeze bottles for acrylic paint
plastic jars, containers or squeeze bottles for acrylic house paint
drop cloth
Camera
sponge - stored in plastic bag or container
paper towels
water bucket and/or multiple water containers
board with clamps for attaching paper when using an easel (optional)
old clothes, apron, shirt or some way to not get paint on "good" clothes, chairs, cars, etc.
to clean oil brushes only you will need some bars of ivory soap, "Murphy's" or other brush soaps
Mediums:
watercolor and gauche: use water ONLY
acrylic can use acrylic mediums: gel for a thicker consistency, water to thin, regular
acrylic medium to make it more transparent (less pigment) and still maintain the texture or
surface and matte and gloss mediums to make the surface matte or gloss
oil will need turpenoid, and oil such as stand, walnut or other oil and Damar varnish or
other varnish
tempera needs no medium except water ONLY
note: oil paint and oil painting mediums DO NOT mix with any other paints or mediums
Surfaces To Paint On: You will only need SOME of the following
Mesonite or MDF or smooth plywood
Stretched canvases
Gesso and/or white latex house paint
Cardboard or Matt board or other lightweight board
300 lb. watercolor paper
lighter watercolor papers that are wetted (by you) and stretched (by you)
watercolor paper "block"
watercolor paper pad
un-stretched primed canvas – available at Utrecht among other places
note: canvas board is not recommended
DETAILS ON PAINTS
Acrylic house paint, acrylic paint in tubes or acrylic paint in jars is best for:
drying before you go home and thus transporting easily,
painting over and over without having to wait several days for it to dry
beginners without drawing experience
mixing and using different acrylic paints together
caution: it does dry fast and will dry in your brushes if you don't keep them wet
comes in: jars or tubes from the art stores or cans from the paint suppliers
Artist Oil paint is best for:
someone who has drawing and painting experience and wants to paint in oil,
blending colors and mixing colors on the painting as it stays WET for one to
several days before it dries or begins to dry
you must have a box to transport wet paintings in and wet palettes
comes in: tubes from the art store or catalogues
Watercolor paint and/or Gouache are best for:
people who are traveling
washes easily out of the brush and will wash out even if it has dried on the brush
people who are willing to let "water be their friend" and who will let things happen
and not worry about being exacting and controlled
transporting
can re-use any paint that you have squeezed onto a palette by re-hydrating
comes in: tins or small tubes
note: watercolor is transparent and gouache is opaque, both are water based
Tempera paint or "poster paint" is best for:
the budget
washing out of clothes and brushes, etc.
learning to paint while using inexpensive materials
transporting
comes in squeeze bottles
Colors to Get:
Red, Yellow, Blue (optional: Green, Orange, Purple) and Black and lots of White
note: Any versions of these colors will work for you and you can add in more colors as you go.
