July 2014 - Queen Edith Primary School

NEWSLETTER
JULY 2014
NO. 18
Dear Parents and Friends of the Schools
It is a great pleasure to write to you at the end of term with a long list of people to thank for their great
contribution to school life. Firstly let us start with our school leavers in Year 6, many of whom will be
moving on after eight years at Queen Edith. We thank them all for their enthusiastic participation in so
many school events and for carrying out their responsibilities so well. We appreciate how the school
sports teams have been greatly enhanced by the year group and we have celebrated many triumphs
in recent competitions due to their skills. We remember productions that have been the making of
many stars and the opportunities to enjoy the company of the children at extra-curricular clubs,
educational visits and residentials. Not least amongst the highlights for this year group have been the
excellent SATS results they achieved, demonstrating both great progress throughout their time at
Queen Edith but also ensuring future success at secondary school as they are so well prepared for
their move.
This is also the time to wish staff farewell. We thank Miss Turner for her work to help set up the Early
Years at Queen Emma and wish her well as she moves to lead literacy in a school in the north of the
City. We thank Mr Cooper for his hard work keeping our ICT up and running: never an easy job when
money is tight and needs are high! He moves onto an exciting post in the new Technical School
opening locally. Two Teaching Assistants, Krissie Taylor and Hannah Curtis, have so enjoyed their
time at Queen Emma they have chosen to train to be teachers. We wish them well as this is not a
course for the faint hearted! We also wish our nursery manager Debby Cafano happiness in her new
job as she moves to a nursery much nearer to home.
Congratulations to Amy Ford, one of our Year 5 teachers at Queen Edith, who left us at half term. We
are delighted to announce the safe arrival of Freddy Ford earlier this month. We also wish Miss Haigh
and Mrs Irons well as they also go on maternity leave. We look forward to hearing their exciting news
in September when their new arrivals are due.
Thank you to the PSFAs who continue to support our school activities and at Queen Edith helped with
the sports day and at Queen Emma ran a great school picnic with cakes and ice-creams, a bouncy
castle, selection boxes and superb sunshine. We were also very grateful to the Cambridge Touring
company who did two wonderful performances of Alice the musical for the schools on Monday as an
end of year treat.
Best wishes to you all for a wonderful holiday. My grateful thanks to all the staff who have worked so
hard this year and richly deserve their break. I do hope the sun will shine wherever you are and we
will all come back to school refreshed and ready for another year altogether.
th
We look forward to seeing the children back in school on Thursday 4 September.
Best wishes,
Caroline Peet

We believe there are pupils who are eligible for FREE SCHOOL MEALS who are not yet claiming
them. From September 2014 all children who are in reception, year 1 or year 2 in a state-funded
school will be offered a free healthy school lunch. Children in other school years will also be offered a
free school lunch if their parent is receiving any of the welfare benefits listed below.

Income Support
Income-based Jobseekers Allowance
Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
Support from NASS (National Asylum Support Service) under part 6 of the Immigration and
Asylum Act 1999

Child Tax Credit (with no Working Tax Credit) with an annual income of no more than £16,190
Working Tax Credit run-on
Universal Credit.
Registering for free meals could raise an extra £1,300 for the school, to fund valuable support like
extra tuition, additional teaching staff or after school activities.
This additional money is available from central government for every child whose parent is receiving
one of the welfare benefits listed above. It is therefore important to sign up for free school meals, even
if your child is in reception, year 1 or year 2, so that your child’s school receives as much funding as
possible.
If you are at all unsure whether you qualify please come to the office and talk to Miss Perry.
PACKED LUNCHES
Please can we remind parents that children are not allowed sweets
or bars of chocolate in their lunchboxes. Please do not send any nuts or nut products as we have
children in school with severe nut allergies.
Children should also only have water in their water bottles.
(Juice cartons can be brought in for lunch).
Many thanks.

Scratch Club
We made Scratch Club because we wanted people to know how to use Scratch
properly. Although Mr Blower supervised the club, we planned everything and
did all the teaching. We wanted to show people just what you can do with
Scratch. You could for example, make a game, comic script, story, message and
other things. It’s like computer coding, but much, much easier. There is also a
new version of Scratch, which has more added to it. It’s constantly being updated and is a lot of fun.
If you haven’t tried it, you really should. You don’t know what you’re missing out on. The first time
we tried it, it was a hit with the Year 5s. They absolutely loved it. We were happy for more people to
come, so we ran the club a second time in the summer term. Many people loved this club – here’s
what they said:
It’s really fun and they let you do lots of different things. Also they teach you all the clever things they
know about Scratch.
Scratch club is better than any other club. You must go it’s fun, educational and useful on computers.
It’s the best.

Wandlebury Country Park
This half term, Year 3 went on a trip to Wandlebury country park. 3.2 went on the 27th June and 3.1
and 3.3 went on the 4th July. We enjoyed sunny days and a variety of activities, including pond
dipping, grass sweeping, making bookmarks and learning all about bees. It was lots of fun and we all
learned a lot, which has helped us with our plants topic. This is what the children had to say:
“Wandlebury was really interesting because I learned about flowers I didn’t know” – Edward
“I loved finding interesting things in the pond!” – Frances
“I liked learning about the animals there and doing the pond dipping” - Jessica
“It was really good finding creatures in the pond” – Connor

Grafham Water Visit
Hanging from the climbing wall
The Grafham Challenge
Year 6 went to Grafham Water for their annual residential trip from Wednesday 9th – Friday 11th July.
They got to try a range of different activities, including windsurfing, kayaking, climbing, low ropes,
bushcraft, archery, sailing and raft building.
Here are some comments about the trip:
“I liked climbing, because it was harder than I thought it would be and it was fun.” – Anna
“I enjoyed archery because I’d never done it before. It was good to try a new sport.” – Nat
“I had the most fun going sailing, because I felt independent out on the lake on a boat by ourselves.”
– Hannah
“Kayaking was my favourite activity, because it was a thrill when you went quite fast in your boat.
You went from not even knowing how to do it to being really fast.” – Theo
“One of my favourite things was crate stacking, because you had to work as a team: if one crate
doesn’t fit, it all falls down.” – Isla
“I enjoyed the low ropes, because of all the games that we played.” – Bradley

PE Update:
Kwik Cricket Success
We entered a team into the mixed kwik cricket tournament on Parker’s Piece on Monday 9th June.
We played four matches in our group, all of which we won comfortably to qualify for the county
finals.
In kwik cricket, the batting team starts with 200 runs, with 5
lost each time a player is out. Each batting pair faces two
overs of six balls, with every fielder bowling an over. In just
eight overs, we managed to score over 300 runs in two of our
four matches and, in our final match, bowled the opposition
out for under 200. This was a very impressive performance,
but we knew the county finals would be much tougher.
Action from the County Finals
These were held at Clare College Sports Grounds on Thursday 19th June. After a shaky start, we
managed to win our opening match with quite a bit to spare, but then lost the second by a small
margin (12 runs, if I remember correctly). This meant that we had to win our final game to qualify for
the quarter finals. Unfortunately, we lost by the very smallest of margins and spent most of the lunch
break dwelling on a few key moments that could have seen a very different outcome.
This is the third time in the last four years we have qualified for the County Finals. The standard is
always high, with lots of village schools, where a number of children play for cricket clubs outside of
school. We only had one of those in our team – Vishrut, who’s in Year 3 – so we did incredibly well to
be so competitive. Well done to everyone who played: Saif, Vishrut, Anna and Hasan were our most
accurate and reliable bowlers, while Noah and Max were particularly athletic fielders and Safi, Jonny
and Martina scored important runs with some clean hitting.
KS1 Football Matches
Our early exit from the kwik cricket tournament meant I was able to get back to school in time for
our first ever sports fixtures against Queen Emma. The football matches were really well organised
by Year 5 and 6 Sports Leaders, particularly Isla and Kyle who refereed the two matches, and
demonstrated the potential for regular sporting fixtures between the two schools in the future. In
the end, it was Mrs Peet who was the happiest, with honours even after Queen Edith won the Year 1
match and Queen Emma triumphed against our Year 2s. Well done to everyone who played.

National School Sports Week
We celebrated National School Sports Week with a range of sporting competitions organised by our
Year 6 Sports Leaders. On Monday, KS1 children got to try a number of different athletic activities,
while on Wednesday and Thursday, Middle Years and Later Years children competed in teams at
netball, ten pin bowling, non-stop cricket and football. Well done to Griffin who won the Later Years’
competition and Phoenix who were the Middle Years’ winners.
The main thank you, though, is to our Sports Leaders who refereed, time kept, point scored and
behaviour managed (on occasions) superbly on each of the three afternoons. I look forward to seeing
many of them leading sports competitions in the future.
The following week also saw the return of our (hopefully-again-to-be-annual) swimming galas, won
by Phoenix in Later Years and Centaur in Middle Years. Thanks to our Bronze Ambassadors for their
enthusiasm for this event.
Partnership Youth Games:
During National School Sports Week, we again entered three teams into the Partnership Youth
Games competition at the Abbey Complex and, once more, enjoyed a very successful day. Our
regular competitions at the end of units of work in PE allowed us to select children for this
competition, with a Year 3 tag rugby team, Year 4 footballers and a mix of children competing at
multi-skills.
Our multi-skills team finished in fourth, our tag rugby players picked up medals for finishing third –
an excellent achievement against a lot of older teams – while our footballers came home with a
trophy, having won all their games and finished first. The children also got to try a range of different
taster activities. Thanks to Mr Wood, Mrs Blower and Mrs Woods for accompanying the children and
managing the teams.
There was further success for Queen Edith, as Francesca in Year 5 won the competition to design a
logo celebrating the third stage of this year’s Tour de France. Her winning design was featured on all
the t-shirts worn by children on the day. Well done to her!

National Youth Day Success:
There was further success for Queen Edith children at National Youth Day for korfball, in Beckenham,
South London, on Sunday 29th June. We entered two teams into this competition and both
performed brilliantly to finish amongst the top school and club teams in the country.
Our U9 team won their first two matches very easily in the morning, before slipping up against the
eventual winners, Trojans, in their final group game. This meant that they finished second in their
group and went into Pool B for the afternoon. They lost their next game for very similar reasons:
keenness to intercept passes led to quite a lot of ball watching, rather than marking players, and was
punished by the opposition. Although we put up lots of shots, we lost the game 3-1. We battled back
well, though, and won our final two games to finish as winners of the second pool and fifth in the
country. A very good achievement for a group of children who only started playing at the start of
Year 4. It was great to see such excellent teamwork, athleticism and determination.
On another day, this would have been a remarkable success, but our U11 team performed even
better. Competing against a number of club teams, whose senior sides play in the National League
(the top division in English korfball) we won all three of our morning matches (3-1, 6-0 and 4-1, if I
remember correctly) to qualify for the top pool as group winners.
Our first game showed what a tough challenge this was going to be, as we quickly went 2 goals down
against a strong Tornadoes team. We fought back brilliantly, though, to win the game 3-2.
Our second game was a much more straight forward 5-2 win against Milton Keynes, but our third
saw us play against Bearsted, a team who won their other afternoon matches 11-1, 11-1 and 9-0. We
defended fantastically to limit them to very few scoring chances. Isla’s persistence and willingness to
keep being fouled (!) saw her win a penalty, which Saif coolly converted, before Paige looked to have
scored the winning goal. Unfortunately, we then lost a bit of concentration in defence and allowed
Bearsted back into the game and they eventually triumphed 4-2. Nevertheless, we won our final
group game 4-1 to finish second overall. This was a phenomenal achievement. As I reminded the
players: last year, at National Youth Day, was the first time we’d ever won a game. To have come
from regularly losing matches to being the second best Under 11s team in the country is fantastic.
www.queenedithschool.org.uk
Well done to all the players who played. Saif and Safi were, as always, a constant threat in attack and
alert in defence and scored consistently throughout the day. Isla weighed in with five goals, while
Max, Martina, Paige, Seby, Nina and Jannis all contributed with crucial goals and interceptions. A
quick mention also to Anna, who played for her club team, Cambridge City, and scored eight of their
team’s eleven goals.
Thank you to all the parents who helped transport children all the way down to Kent and cheered
them on, and to the children who gave up their Sundays to play.
It was a great way for the Year 6s in the team to finish their korfballing careers at Queen Edith, but I
know they will all continue to play and enjoy the game in the future. It’s been great to work with
them over the past couple of years and watch them develop and improve so much. We now need
girls (in particular) to replace them and see if we can emulate that success in the future.
This was the final sporting competition of a very busy year. A large number of children have had the
opportunity to represent the school in sporting fixtures, with the following children having played on
10 or more occasions: Martina, Safi, Saif, Isla, Anna, Max, Theo, Nat, Minahil, Nina and Seby. Well
done to all of them!
On Friday 12th September at 7:30 pm at St Johns' Church, Hills Road,
Cambridge there will be a “Musical exploration” presented by the
Cottenham Brass Band. Tickets will be available from the beginning of June
price £8 from Geoff Heathcock, Branch Chairman.
Light refreshments will be available plus a raffle and a special Cake in celebration of the Appeal.
Thanks to all of you who have brought in used printer cartridges and old mobile
phones – we sent a huge pile to the recycling company! We will let you know
how much we raised as soon as possible - PSFA”

PSFA News July 2014
2013/14 was another great year for Queen Edith PSFA and we would like to say
a huge thank you to everyone who helped at events, but also to those of you who
came to our events and spent your money to help raise funds for the school.
Without the support of Queen Edith parents and carers we could not have done
anything.
For us the highlight of the year was the fete which surprised us all by making well over £5,000
on what was also a lovely afternoon. For the children we also had the annual discos which are a
chance to get together with your friends, and maybe even see your teacher dance! Bag 2 School
always makes us a lot of money as well as de-cluttering our houses and we have been very
pleased with the success of the cake sales, which we introduced this year.
Plans for next year include more cake sales, organized by different year groups each time, and in
the first term an International Food Evening where we will celebrate how fortunate we are to
have so many families from overseas and have a chance to share their culture. The evening is
open to everyone and is always loads of fun. The date for this along with dates for all PSFA
events and meetings will be in the annual school calendar sent home with your children at the
start of next year.
New Treasurer
The PSFA would like to say a huge thank you to Natacha Wilson who took over the role of
Treasurer this year and has made a fantastic contribution to the team. Sadly her son Seby moves
to secondary school in September and so we desperately need to find someone new to take over
this vital role. This could be one person or two friends working as a ‘job share’. If you are
interested in finding out more please contact Natacha Wilson or Jacqui Whitmore (Chair) via the
PSFA email.
We are always delighted when new people come along to get involved in the PSFA and this year
we saw quite a few new faces. If you are interested in joining us please do get in touch, it’s a fun
way to get involved and support the school.
With many thanks
Happy Holidays !
