"When I think about Camp Allen and why it's a special place, I think
about the unconditional love of Christ. Backgrounds don't matter,
talents don't matter, hardships don't matter. What matters is they are
all God's creation and deserve the same love that Christ loves us with.
And our big prayer is that this is what would change a heart."

ABOUT CAMP ALLEN
A ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas, Camp Allen has traversed over 150 miles
and 96 years to reach where it is today. With its humble beginnings on 10 acres of
land gifted by Rosa Lum Allen in 1921, Camp Allen has moved and expanded to 1,100
forested acres in Navasota with 85 full time employees. Throughout the journey, the
heart remains the same: to create a space for people to come and find respite, and
experience God in a new, illuminating way. Our desire is that each of our 56,000 annual guests, 7,800 Discovery Students, and 2,000 summer campers leave Camp Allen
feeling renewed, well cared for, and ready to come back again soon.
THE HISTORY OF STARRY NIGHTS
Starry Nights and Campfire Lights was created in 2002 to support the programs and
ministries of Camp Allen and to bridge the financial gap for families so that all children can have the opportunity to attend camp. Since the first event fifteen years ago,
support raised at Starry Nights and Campfire Lights has enabled over 30,000 children
to experience a week of summer camp or attend the Discovery Outdoor Education
program with their school. In 2008, an annual Austin Starry Nights was established,
and it continues to raise wonderful support and awareness for Camp Allen across the
Diocese. Your generous contributions are changing lives and making leaders... thank
you for your faithful support!
MEG GANCHAN RICE AND STEVE RICE
Meg and her family have multi-generational connections with Camp Allen. Her grandparents Meg and Kenzie Dattner frequented the original Camp Allen property with
their close church friends Ingeborg and Tom Tellepsen. Her mother, Mildred Ganchan
and Lorraine Tellepsen, were campers as young girls, as were Meg and her daughter,
Meghan. The Episcopal Church and Camp Allen are an integral part of the history of
her family. Meg has served Camp Allen’s board on the Development Committee and
hosts the annual popular Bishop’s dinner. Steve’s passion is ‘saving the redfish’, and
he is a founding board member of the Coastal Conservation Association. His culinary
gifts come in handy every year for the Bishop’s dinner. The Rice family attends The
Church of St. John the Divine where Meg has served in various leadership roles. Currently, she teaches the Hope of Glory Bible Study. Meg and her husband, Steve, have
three grown children and three “perfect” grandchildren.

KATHY AND TOM TELLEPSEN II
The Tellepsens are long-time members of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church and very active in the church and the Houston community. Kathy completed her training in the
Community of Hope at St. Luke’s Hospital in the early stages of that organization
leading to her participation in The Abundant Living Programs which have brought
her back to Camp Allen over the years. The legacy of Camp Allen goes back to the
very beginning with their family since Tom’s father, Howard T. Tellepsen, was a camper in the early 1920’s. Tom’s construction background first introduced him to Camp
Allen in the late 1970’s to remodel the Campsite Director’s Quarters. He served on the
committee to expand and develop facilities to include the present day Pavilion and
lake in 1984. Tom is presently on the Advisory Board after serving several years on the
Camp Allen Board. Kathy and Tom have three grown children and eight grandchildren, including two “lively” sets of twins.
