SOARING WITH NUMBERS
With an orange pencil, trace on your map the route from Bombay to Tokyo. Estimate the
distance in both miles and kilometers and enter the distances on your chart.
Aboard their flight, the pilot announced that they were passing over
a statue of Buddha, at 394 feet or 120 meters, the world’s tallest
statue.
Margaret commented, “The San Jacinto Monument is the tallest monumental column at (16) _______ feet,
and the Gateway to the West in St. Louis, Missouri is the
tallest monument with a height of (17) (a) _______ feet,
making it (b) ________ feet taller than the San Jacinto
Monument.”
#18. Hint: Convert the Archway’s height of feet to meters by
multiplying by .91, then that number is in meters for the Archway. Change meters to decimeters. Compare.
“That means the Gateway to the West is (18) _____ decimeters taller
than the Great Buddha Statue in Japan,” said RaShundra.
(19) Draw a graph comparing the heights of the Buddha statue, the San
Jacinto Monument, and the Gateway to the West.
“Toyko Disneyland is the most visited theme park in the world,” interrupted
RaShundra. “Wonder what it would be like?”
Tony exclaimed, “I bet it’s awesome! Let’s go there!”
“Yes, yes, yes,” chimed Margaret and Stevie, “we’re on our way.”
