“Figurative Language in Creepers” INTRO: Figurative language is one of the most useful tools of authors. It can be used to help make writing much more interesting, a good way to “mix it up.” That’s some good professional worksheet lingo, right? Not really, but that’s not what I’m concerned about. This page is all about studying the figurative language in Creepers, so let’s begin. ****************************** 1) A simile is a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, typically using the words “like” or “as.” Example: “His skin had gone to a horribly ugly pale color, more like a sheet of paper than a living person” 2) A metaphor is a figure of speech that identifies something as being the same as some unrelated thing Example: “The creeper was suddenly a speeding bullet, blazing a path toward the brothers.” 3) Personification is a figure of speech where human qualities are given to animals, objects or ideas. Example: “It was lit only by the flames from the fireplace, which danced wildly and cast suspicious shadows through the living room...” 4) Imagery means to use figurative language to represent objects, actions, and ideas in such a way that it appeals to our physical senses. Example: “The sudden chatter of gun fire pierced the silence.” ****************************** Now it’s your turn! Find 3 different examples of figurative language from the book, and don’t use the same form twice. Identify the form of your example (simile, metaphor, etc.), quote it, and give the page number on the following lines. 1) ___________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ 2) ___________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ 3) ___________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________
