A MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO CELEBRATE THE Y!

The Y TIMES
WINTER 2015 | Volume 2, Issue 1
A MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO
February has arrived and if you haven’t
kept your New Year’s resolutions don’t
worry about it, just push the reset
button and begin again. We’re always
here to support you in achieving your
wellness goals at your YMCA. Here
are some fun events to think about:
February is American Heart Month;
however it is also National Snack
Food Month. At the Y we are all about
healthy living so we’ll encourage you to
go with the healthy snack food – think
fruits and veggies.
Richard Pollock,
President & CEO of the YMCA
of South Palm Beach County
The year 2015 will be a year of
strategic planning for our YMCA.
We have engaged YMCA of the USA
consultants to conduct facility audits
at our Peter Blum and DeVos Blum
branches. We’ll be examining trends,
reviewing schedules, and conducting
member focus groups and surveys
to see whether facility changes or
additions are necessary and to make
certain that our program offerings are
meeting your needs as members. Our
goal is to ensure that the membership
experience is of high value to you, your
family, and to our community. Be sure
to weigh in when you are called upon.
Our YMCA is far more than a gym.
We strengthen our communities
with programs that promote youth
development, healthy living, and social
responsibility. We raise funds to
ensure that everyone can participate.
We engage community volunteers in
board and policy functions, fundraising,
coaching, mentoring, and tutoring. Our
YMCA is not just a place to join but it
is a place to belong and to contribute.
On behalf of the board and staff of the
YMCA, thank you for being a part of
our movement.
Sincerely,
Richard W. Pollock
President & CEO
CELEBRATE
THE
Y!
THE 13TH ANNUAL INSPIRATION BREAKFAST WITH
JIM KELLY • MARCH 24 • 7:30AM -10:30AM
We are excited to announce that Jim Kelly will be
the keynote speaker at our 13th Annual Inspiration
Breakfast on March 24, 2015 at the Office Depot
Global Headquarters in Boca Raton. He will
be joined by special guest Coach Howard
Schnellenberger and YMCA board member
Yvonne Boice, will be the honoree this year. The
Inspiration Breakfast is a morning of motivational
and inspirational fellowship, and fun; bringing
the community together for a time of reflection,
encouragement and inspiration while we celebrate
the YMCA’s energetic vision and spirit.
Jim Kelly played quarterback for the University of
Miami, and during his senior year, was nominated
as a candidate for the Heisman Trophy. In 1986 Jim began
his professional football career with the Buffalo Bills.
During his career with the Bills, the team had six AFC East
Championships and four consecutive Super Bowl appearances.
No other team has been able to match this accomplishment.

That same year, Jim’s only son Hunter was born.
Hunter was diagnosed with a fatal disease called
Krabbe Leukodytrophy and was only given two
years to live. Hunter celebrated 8 years of life
before he was laid to rest in August 2005.
In 2002, Jim was inducted into the Pro Football
Hall of Fame. He was only the 8th quarterback to
be selected on the first ballot. His entire family
was there, including Hunter. In 2013, Jim was
diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma, a form of
cancer located in his upper jaw. After undergoing
chemotherapy and radiation treatments, doctors
announced in September 2014 that Jim had no sign
of cancer. Jim’s story is one of great inspiration.
A variety of different sponsorship levels are available.

PUT A LITTLE LOVE IN YOUR HEART
February is American Heart Month and as a
leading nonprofit dedicated to strengthening our
local community through healthy living, the YMCA
of South Palm Beach County urges our members,
staff, and volunteers to take steps to prevent
chronic diseases such as heart disease for a
longer, healthier life.
Heart disease is the number one killer of both men
and women in the U.S., but you can lower your
risk, and in some cases even prevent the disease,
by adopting a few healthy lifestyle habits.
IF YOU SMOKE, QUIT! Cigarette smoking is considered the biggest risk factor for sudden
cardiac death. A smoker’s risk of heart attack is more than twice that of a non-smoker.
CONTROL YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE. High blood pressure causes your heart to work
harder. Over time the heart enlarges, increasing your risk of heart attack, heart failure,
stroke, and kidney failure.
CONTROL YOUR CHOLESTEROL. Understand the difference between LDL and HDL
cholesterol—the “good” vs the “bad.” Too much of the unhealthy cholesterol (LDL) and
not enough of the healthy type (HDL) can increase risk for coronary heart disease.
MAINTAIN A HEALTHY BODY WEIGHT & ENGAGE IN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. Obesity
not only puts too much strain on the heart, but it can also affect blood pressure and
cholesterol, and increase your risk for diabetes. Studies have shown that regular,
moderate exercise can reduce your risk for heart disease, as well as diabetes and
several other health complications.
Putting a little love in your heart can pay off with good health for many years to come.
LOVE
SAVE LIVES,
BE WATER WISE
The YMCA of South Palm Beach County has
developed a new program called Water Wise, an
outreach initiative which focuses on the needs of
water safety throughout Palm Beach County.
The Water Wise curriculum includes water safety
instruction in the classroom as well as in the
water. This program was created for families who
may not have access to traditional swim lessons.
The Water Wise program teaches the importance
of being AWARE, EDUCATED, and SAFE while
engaging in water-related activities. The goal
of the program is to provide opportunities for
everyone in our community the chance to enjoy
and stay safe in the water-rich environment in
which we live in Palm Beach County.
If you’re interested in being a part of this
effort as a partner or sponsor, contact the
YMCA’s Drowning Prevention Coordinator, Liz
Schmidt at [email protected]. For more
information on the Water Wise Program visit

GRANT FROM IPA FOUNDATION
GETS Y KIDS COMPUTER LABS
HEART HEALTH MONTH
YMCA Board Member and Independent Pilots Association member, Debbie DonnellyMcLay, recently organized a partnership between the YMCA and the IPA Foundation to
secure a $10,500 grant which would supply two mobile computer labs for kids at our
YMCA’s. The IPA represents more than 2,600 professional pilots who fly in service of
United Parcel Service, the world’s largest transportation company.
Both the YMCA and the IPA Foundation are dedicated to youth development in the local
community. For instance the YMCA of South Palm Beach County offers direct childcare
services to nearly 1,800 children in our community during out-of-school time, and
over 5,000 children through afterschool programs. The IPA states its mission as being
dedicated to providing for the well-being of children and their basic needs with a focus
on making life-changing differences for children with exceptional medical requirements.
The Y has been pleased to provide kids in our programs the chance to use these great
new resources – thanks IPA Foundation!

PEOPLE
MEET OUR MEMBERS
Wanda Allen
Wanda Allen and her daughter Destiny value the importance of family at the Y. Wanda and Destiny
were members of a Y in Maryland, so when they relocated to the Boca area in August of 2013,
joining the Peter Blum Family Y only made sense. Wanda knew this was the right place for her and
Destiny after touring the facility and speaking with Joan and Joe. “I was very happy my daughter could
participate in the youth programs while I got in my workout,” Wanda shared.
Wanda and her daughter are at the Y several times a week and love to swim after church on Sunday.
“We love the water, and the Aquatics Center is great.”
Destiny participates in the Youth Strength program, a course designed for kid’s ages 12-15 who
would like to use the fitness center. The program gives Wanda and Destiny the opportunity to work
out together; they even have an activity schedule, full of exercises and equipment they use at the Y.
“Destiny and I will work out side-by-side, or sometimes she will use a different machine on the other
side of the gym. I am so proud of her and happy she is in the Youth Strength program. I love the Y
because they support my daughter and I.”
Stacy Harris
Stacy Harris, wife and mother of twins, moved to Boynton Beach two years ago. Her
and her family became members of the DeVos-Blum Y after two of her girlfriends, also
mothers to twins, introduced them to the Y. The first exercise class Stacy took was Zumba
with Jennifer Rodriguez and she has been hooked ever since. “Zumba is my favorite class,
and I consider them my Zumba family,” Stacy says.
Dedicated to investing more time in herself, Stacy’s weight loss journey began a year ago
with her family being the main inspiration. “I want to be there for my kids. They are an
important part of my life.”
Stacy started working out with one of the Y’s personal trainers, Kevin, and is thankful he
pushes her and makes her work harder every day. Over the past year, Stacy has lost 40
pounds, she has become stronger and has completed three 5k marathons and plans to do
another very soon.
By becoming a YMCA Annual Campaign donor, Stacy is also giving back to her community.
Stacy says she feels it’s important for everyone no matter their financial status to
experience what the Y has to offer.
Stacy and her family are at the Y almost every day. Her kids enjoy the Y’s Child Watch program,
kid’s soccer and Zumba, and she also participates in adult volleyball on Monday nights.
“The Y is a huge part of my success. My family and I love being members of the Y. This is our
second home and family.”
“The Y is a place where people can grow and flourish; it’s important for our
community to have a chance to be a part of the Y.”

MEET OUR VOLUNTEERS
Kyle Dagnan (DeVos-Blum Family Y)
Meet Kyle, a Y kid who has grown into a Y young adult.
Kyle and his family have been members of the DeVos-Blum
Y for over ten years. Growing up at the Y, Kyle has “done
everything” Y-related and has been able to participate in
a wide variety of youth programming like pre-school, after
care, and sports. Kyle and his mom love working out at the Y
and enjoy taking Tracy’s Boot Camp exercise class.
Kyle’s first time volunteering at the Y was helping Cynara
decorate the front desk with Christmas decorations. Since
then Kyle has volunteered at special events like Healthy Kids
Day, and has helped members at the front desk.
Now an employee at the Y, one could say his Y journey has
come full circle. “I love interacting with Y members. They are
so appreciative and hearing them say ‘Thank you’ makes my
day. Our Staff is awesome and a lot of fun; there’s never a
dull moment.”
Kyle feels being an employee at the Y has helped him
overcome his shyness and become more outgoing. “We have
so many members, so I get the chance to meet new people
every day.”
A sophomore in high school, Kyle is thankful to have grown
up a Y kid and to be a part of the Y family. Volunteering at
the Y has given Kyle the opportunity to experience much in
his young life, with many more great experiences to come.
Thanks for all you do at the Y, Kyle!
Sage Albert (Peter Blum Family Y)
We love to hear from our Y family! Sage Albert, a valued
volunteer for the Teen Leaders Club at the Peter Blum Y,
submitted her story and we wanted to share it with you:
“I first became involved with programs at the Y during the
summer of 2012 as a volunteer with the LIT (Leader in
Training) Program during summer camp. I loved it so much
that I went back in the summer of 2013 and 2014, and plan
to attend this summer. After my second summer of being an
LIT, James invited me to be a part of the Teen Leaders Club.
My passion has always been helping people. When I am
older I want to work in the medical field so that I can help
save people’s lives. By volunteering I am able to help serve
and better the community. I recently became a part of the
Leaders Club board as the Communications Chairman. This
position allows me to bring my other passion, photography,
to the club. I hope to work my way up our “leadership
ladder” to one day become President of the club.
I have been able to experience so much, being in the Teen
Leaders Club, that most other teens do not get. Being a
volunteer has made me want to become a better person,
and I want to make it known that teens are capable of doing
great things by being a volunteer.”
Thank you, Sage, for volunteering at the Y!

LYNN UNIVERSITY FUTURE LEADERS VISIT THE Y
On January 7, the Peter Blum Family YMCA hosted 15 Lynn University students participating in the
Future Leaders of Tomorrow program which is being piloted as part of Lynn University’s J - term.
In collaboration with the Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce, the program is an effort to expose future
student leaders to the Boca Raton Business and Civic Community.
The Peter Blum Family Y was chosen as one of 17 Boca Raton businesses and civic organizations the
students visited. Lynn students toured the Y and met with CEO Richard Pollock and Executive Director
Chris Sapp.
“It was refreshing to see the students interested in volunteering at the Y; their interest in the Y gave
me a lot of excitement about the Future Leaders program,” Chris said. “The program consists of a great
group of diverse students who could possibly work for the Y one day.”
The purpose of their visit was to highlight career opportunities available in Boca Raton, and give the students a chance to network with community
leaders and gain an understanding of the importance of being involved with organizations such as the YMCA of South Palm Beach County.
Future Leaders of Tomorrow at Lynn University is a Career prep course and will include classroom time working on resume writing, mock interviewing,
the art of networking, dress for success, developing a LinkedIn profile and behavioral assessments.

APRIL IS PARKINSON’S AWARENESS MONTH
In honor of April being Parkinson’s Awareness
Month, it’s a good time to recognize the popular
and effective YMCA Surf-n-Turf Program. The
Y’s Surf-n-Turf Program was developed through
a partnership with the South Palm Beach County
Chapter of the National Parkinson’s Foundation
and it has been offered at both of our Y locations,
in Boca for 10 years and in Boynton for 3 years.
The YMCA of South Palm Beach County
recognizes there are some of the 60,000+
diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease living in
South Florida. The Y’s Surf-n-Turf Program helps
to slow the progression of the disease, allows
patients with Parkinson’s to be independent
and also provides caregivers of persons with
Parkinson’s much-needed support.
At its inception, the Y worked closely with health care providers to develop the program.
The goal was simple: improvement of mobility and dexterity in order to maintain or improve
independence. The program incorporates land and water exercises to increase participant’s
overall fitness, strength, endurance, flexibility, balance and mobility.
The Y recognizes the benefit of the program for the community and raises funds to offset the
remaining costs. If you’d like to donate to support this program, please contact Mary Workman
at 561-237-0944 or [email protected]. For more information about the Parkinson’s
program stop by the front desk at your local Y!
