Deep below the streets of Seattle, a giant tunneling
machine is digging a tunnel to replace the Alaskan Way
Viaduct, the elevated highway that spans Seattle’s
waterfront. Milepost 31, the SR 99 Tunnel Project’s
information center in Pioneer Square, provides an inside
look at this massive project and highlights the history of
the Pioneer Square neighborhood. The exhibit features soil
samples, tunneling equipment, and a 10-foot-long model
of Bertha, the tunneling machine. Please come visit this
free exhibit.
