From The Executive Director
==============================================
Dear Friends,
This has been a "roller-coaster" year for Na Hoaloha - Neighbors Helping
Neighbors - which once again proved itself to be the "Little Engine That
Could."
In January 2012 our Volunteer Coordinator went on extended medical leave,
which left the Transportation Coordinator and Executive Director filling in to
cover her responsibilities. And finally in early September 2012, we were
informed that our Volunteer Coordinator will be moving to the Mainland to be
closer to family. Shortly thereafter, our Transportation Coordinator quit.
We are now at a crossroads, where Na Hoaloha gets to choose whether to
adopt a crisis or opportunity mode as we begin working with a
Development Consultant to create a fundraising plan and we begin to
interview several applicants for the Volunteer Coordinator position.
This year our volunteer count exceeded 180 volunteers who helped to serve
over 320 clients (and growing).
The good news is that we were awarded a series of foundation grants that
enabled us to cover the shortfall from our County funding. These included the
Hawaii Community Foundation ($75,000); Kosasa Foundation (ABC Stores $5,000); HMSA Foundation ($5,000); Atherton Foundation ($5,000), Kent &
Polli Smith Fund ($2,500); Tesoro Foundation ($1,000 in gas gift cards) and a
generous $5,000 donation from one of our clients, Robert Douglas.
We are very grateful for the continued and ongoing support of the Maui
County Office on Aging and the support of our Board of Directors and invite
you to join us in the next chapter of the Na Hoaloha "adventure."
Thank you all for helping Na Hoaloha make a positive difference in 2012.
Sincerely,
Gerri Shapiro, MS Ed., Executive Director

Mission
Neighbors Helping Neighbors
provides compassionate care to
seniors to help them to remain
independent and to enhance their
quality of life.
History
Background
Na Hoaloha (“loving friends”) was formed in 1995 wiith the help of
a Robert Wood Johnson Grant, and a dedicated group of
individuals, including Marie Smith, former President of AARP, a
Maui resident at that time.
The “Puka” People
Since its inception, the organization has focused its efforts on the “gap group”
-- people who fall through the “pukas” (holes) of the government service
system. Increasingly, however, we have been serving people who do qualify
for community services but are unable to receive them because of long wait
lists.
The "Little Engine That Could"
Because Na Hoaloha has been continuously under-funded and understaffed,
with frequent turnover in leadership, the newly formed 2006 Board of
Directors took it upon themselves to roll up their sleeves and run the
organization with no paid staff…each taking on a needed role such as staffing
the office, bookkeeping, recruiting volunteers, writing reports and grants, and
cleaning and painting the office…until County funding enabled them to pay off
their bills and fill two part-time positions in early 2007.
The Strength of Na Hoaloha
The strength of Na Hoaloha is in its volunteer base. When other agencies are
unable to hire someone to provide basic services to people in need, Na
Hoaloha has consistently been able to find a volunteer who will provide these
services “from the heart.”
