It’s so lovely to see the sanctuary fields and trees green up after the winter. The daffodils are blooming and the wild birds are feeding on the fat balls and the food we provide and are busy making nests. The muddy paths are drying up making it so much nicer for the dogs to walk. With over 40 dogs a day needing walking, it’s so nice for the staff to be able to spend longer out in the fields and woodland areas with them. The dogs do so enjoy it. The cats are enjoying the recent sunshine, sitting out on the chairs in their pens watching the world go by. We have undertaken a great deal of repairs and renovations and the builders have been busy on the rabbit unit and cattery all over the winter. This will impact greatly by improving the accommodation and overall welfare of the cats and rabbits as well as looking so much better. The rabbits have benefitted from having a new building and garden which we have called ‘The Warren’. It will allow them to spend all day outside enjoying the sunshine and watching the hens and sheep go by. Rabbits often have a sad, lonely and miserable life, confined to small hutches and we are hoping we have created an example for people to follow as to how rabbits should live if kept as pets. We rescued 50 hens, turkeys and geese from battery farms before Christmas. They were a sorry sight and needed lots of extra care and warm mashes to get the through the winter. It’s amazing to see the changes in them in just a few months. They strut about with beautiful plumage shining in the sun following the builder’s spades as they grub around for worms and insects. We have had the builders in since December doing general repairs building new runs and renovating the cattery. All this has been made possible because of a magnificent donation of £9000 from the Pets At Home Charitable Trust. We were very fortunate to receive their support and we can’t thank them enough. We also received a generous donation from a lady supporter in Southport towards this project. Whilst it’s wonderful to make these improvements, we are mindful of the great debt that we owe to you our regular supporters who keep the sanctuary running with repeated donations. Vet bills average £5000 a month and heating £1000. Special thanks to Connie Cuff and trustees of Pine Ridge for monthly contributions towards our neutering costs. We have also had boarding costs for the surplus dogs from the pound who were due to be destroyed before Christmas. Thanks to you they are alive and well and filtering through to the sanctuary. There are many other expenses in providing a regular home for over 150 animals. It’s because of your kindness that we survive, so a big thank you from all the staff, trustees & 4 legged friends. I know that some of our kind supporters find it hard to look at the poor dogs and cats that are homeless, but it’s important to let you know about the animals that you have helped us save. IT’S FINE TO CLOSE YOUR EYES AS LONG AS YOUR HEART IS OPEN ON BEHALF OF THE ANIMALS, THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT AND HAPPY EASTER COUPLES SEARCHING FOR THEIR FOREVER HOMES All are very friendly and no trouble to care for. If you would like to know more about any of the dogs or would like to offer them a permanent or foster home we would love to hear from you. POPEYE & CHERRY MEG & KATIE ROSCO & TARA With so many animals to feed we are still in need of good quality pet food. We are welcome for any pet food but brands such as canned Butchers & Chappie are favoured for the dogs and Whiskas and Felix for the cats. We also need rabbit food, bread, biscuits, oats as we make tasty mash for our chickens. The hens and geese are producing a large number of magnificent eggs which our dedicated cake makers turn into wonderful cakes for the fundraising events. ALLOTMENT NEWS — We are trying to grow our own to save money and to provide food free from pesticides for the animals. Last years crops were a success and we hope that this year will be the same. We hope to have a selection of crops at our Summer Fair. We’ve planted an orchard of apple trees and plums, we hope to add some pears and cherries. PLEASE REMEMBER THE ANIMALS IN YOUR WILL AFTER FAMILY AND FRIENDS. A SMALL LEGACY CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE TO AN ANIMAL SANCTUARY. YOUR TRASH IS OUR TREASURE A great way for us to raise funds is from unwanted clothing, handbags, shoes, belts and even rags. We also take in CDs, DVDs, unwanted gift sets, toiletries, and jewellery. Items can be dropped off at the Sanctuary or WE CAN COLLECT. Just give us a call. Remember, rabbits are for life not just for Easter. 2012 FUNDRAISING EVENTS APRIL Sun 15th—Fun Dog Show—1– 4pm Lydiate Parish Hall Sat 28th—Jumble Sale— 1-3pm Goddard Hall, Bootle MAY Sat 26th—’New to You’ Sale— 11am-12.30pm Goddard Hall, Bootle JUNE Sat 9th—Southport Station Collection Sat 30th—Jumble Sale—1-3pm Goddard Hall, Bootle JULY Sat 14th—Southport Station collection Sun 1st—Fun Dog Show—1-4pm Lydiate Parish Hall AUG Sat 11th—Southport Station Collection Sat 25th—Jumble Sale—1-3pm Goddard Hall, Bootle OCT Sun 7th—Fun Dog Show—1-4pm Lydiate Parish Hall NOV Sat 18th—Fun Dog Show—Lydiate Parish Hall Sat 24th—Jumble Sale—Goddard Hall, Bootle DEC Mon 10th—Southport Station Collection MAGHULL STALL — We are continuing to hold our charity stall outside Superdrug. Sadly died after a short illness. BUSTER—Mr Vose was heartbroken when his beloved companion passed away after a very short illness. KAYLA— Beautiful GSD. Dearly missed by Margaret, Judy and Harry. TILLY—Her owners only had her for a very short time. Sadly missed by the Johnson Family EDDIE, a handsome Staffie, NASEBY, a stray rabbit, DOLLY, a little kitten, PETAL, ROSE, FERN, 3 ex-battery chickens, HARRY, a cross Collie and OLIVIA, our friendly ‘feral’ who loved everyone, all sadly died recently and are fondly remembered by all the staff and volunteers who help at the Sanctuary. A BIG WELCOME TO : Our new arrivals, 3 adorable donkeys Rolo, Jacko and Paddy have been placed in our care. They previously had a devoted owner, but due to circumstances she felt it was best that Animals In Need took over the responsibility. They are currently benefitting from free grazing with Dawn as well as daily care and food provided from supporters Hil and Jim. The donkeys share their field with Hils horse Cal, a magnificent boy, who the donkeys adore. If anyone would like to contribute to the upkeep of the donkeys, we would be grateful. A SAD FAREWELL: We are sad to announce that we lost 2 of our long term residents, Margie, a Saanen goat, who was a delight to behold. She got on so well with all of the other farm animals and had been with us for over 15 years. She had been cruelly treated in the past and only had one ear. But she had an idyllic life with us and we all loved her. Also Fred the Herdwick sheep, who came to us from Acorn Farm, it was said he had grown too big to be petted and he faced an uncertain future, possibly as a lamb chop! He lived with us as part of the family for over 12 years. And sadly Baarbara, our black sheep, who came in as a pregnant stray 2 years ago and gave birth on Easter Monday to Milly. Milly is missing her mum, but is still enjoying a happy life with her owners and with other sheep and goats for company. MARGIE MOLLY AND FRED PLANT BAARBARA APPEAL We would welcome any bedding plants or small shrubs to decorate around our Sanctuary buildings. Any surplus vegetable seedlings for our allotment and to sell on our stalls. Plants and cuttings sell very well in our shop in Formby and at the dog shows. We are continuing to run this appeal as 1000s of these dogs are facing destruction every month. It’s an absolute tragedy. All breeds are affected but the poor Staffies and X Bull Breeds still bear the brunt of this throwaway society. It’s costs just £7 to save the life of one of these dogs by providing boarding. They soon attract new homes when they come into the Sanctuary but we are limited by space. Please help them. Your £1 will help make a difference. LIFE’S NOT FUN FOR SOME DOGS. We would like to invite you along to join us at our Fair & Fun Dog Show and to help us raise funds so we can save more animals from uncertain futures. We will have lots of great stalls and very tasty food to eat on the day and to take away. The West Lancs Dog Display Team will be performing with their talented dogs and you will have a chance to show what your dog can do. MISTY MURTLE PUPPIES TREVOR LOLA We really enjoy bringing you a slice of our ‘Sanctuary Life’ as featured on our website. Here are a few snippets from December, January, February and March. LIVES SAVED—We had a desperate email asking if we could help save 10 adult & 4 puppies, as well as 10 kittens from destruction from a pound in Ireland. We pulled out all the stops and they came across on the ferry on 3rd. Joanne and Caroline covered many miles to get them to us. The dogs and cats were all settled in and we made sure they were all fed and warm for their first night. Thank you to SEAN STYLES and all our friends at Radio Merseyside who had a chat to our lovely receptionist and good all-rounder Paula on air to talk about how we managed at Christmas time with the animals. SAVED FROM BEING CHRISTMAS LUNCH—We rescued 2 female turkeys, 4 female geese and 50 ex-battery chickens from ending up as Christmas dinner. Time had run out all together for them. We also helped a male pet turkey called Trevor, who now loves strutting around showing off his fancy feathers. THANK YOU—Thank you to a special supporter, Linda from Halewood, together with the help of her family, go out of their way to make, collect and donate to help the animals. Linda is blind, but this doesn’t stop her giving us fantastic support. Linda, you are one in a million THANK YOU—We had a visit from 5 very excited children from Springfield Independent School, they had brought food and goodies for the animals. Olivia, Chloe, Andrew, Thomas and Katie along with their teachers, Anna, Sharon and Nathan had a tour around the Sanctuary to meet the animals. FUNDRAISING—Thank you to Roma and all at Viking Rovers Dog Agility Team and their talented doggies who completed a 5 minute stay raising a fantastic £235 for the Sanctuary. LIVERPOOL SANTA DASH—Thank you to Charlie Hill for taking part in the Santa Dash complete with Reindeer friend and raising £100 for the animals. Many thanks to all his friends, family and colleagues for all their support and sponsorship. DESPERATE FOR URGENT HELP - We had a frantic call from a lady who had been given orders to 'get rid' of her dogs or she would be forced from her home. At one point the dogs were nearly taken away, possibly to be destroyed. We quickly arranged for dogs to be boarded in private kennels, so we could bring all 6 in to our Sanctuary. They are the most adorable dogs you could ever meet. Katie and Meg, two 13yr old Westies, Holly, 12yr old Black & White Collie, Harry, 5yr old Black & Tan X Breed, Molly, 6yr old Golden X Collie and Toby, 2yr old Black X Breed have all settled in great and their owner calls daily to ask how they are. CALLS FOR HELP— We have seen a rise in the number of calls for help from outside the Liverpool Area. Pet owners from St Helens, Blackpool, Blackburn and Manchester have asked us for help as they are struggling to find rescues in their own area to assist them. We have over 800 dogs, cats and rabbits on our intake list. FASHION SALE—We were back at Goddard Hall on Wed 7th for another Fashion Sale. Irene and her ‘Shed Faerie’ helpers got together a fantastic selection of goodies to help raise funds for the Sanctuary. We would like to thank all of you who came along and helped us raise £1031.
