Caring, curious,
competent, and
committed teachers
who tie their work
closely to the needs of
communities aren’t just
valuable people; they
are the very lifeblood
of a healthy society.
Without such teachers,
we inevitably falter.
With them, our children
thrive and a brighter,
more prosperous future
is secured for all.
New Educators at Wagner (NEW) is a unique postgraduate teacher development program that fosters
transformational learning among early-career educators.
Using school-based mentoring, cohorts of communities
of practice, peer-assisted learning, action research, and a
blend of online and face-to-face experiences, participants
receive the targeted supports they need both to address
the daily uncertainties of being new teachers and to
reconceptualize their professional self-definitions.
NEW reflects the conceptual framework and philosophy
of the Wagner College education program, engaging
school and community partnerships, blending theory and
practice, integrating academic and clinical instruction,
and pursuing pedagogical content knowledge. Our mission
is to
• Retain new teachers
• Develop teacher leadership at school and district levels
• Enhance teacher quality to improve student learning
• Facilitate transformative learning
Why Is NEW Needed?
In recent years, critics have accused colleges of education
of having lost touch with today’s teaching realities.
Whether true or not, new teachers often feel lonely,
insecure about their abilities, and unsupported as novice
practitioners. Many new teachers leave before the end of
their first year; half leave the field within five years. NEW
is designed to empower new teachers to be successful and
feel rewarded in their work.

Conceptual Framework
NEW guides teachers through a researchbased process of personal transformation
that promotes sustained, applied
learning. This process takes place within
a community of practice using both faceto-face and online forums. Reflection and
discussion are the base of the community
of practice; mentoring and peer-assisted
learning provide the individualized
supports each cohort member needs.
