Reading and Leicester, who have been the dominant forces in recent times in the
Investec Women’s Premier Division met on Saturday. The match is a re-run of the last
three championship finals and it was Reading who came out on top 3-2. A Reading win
looked unlikely when Leicester took a 2-0 lead into the half time break. Pascale Massey
and Nicola White scored the Leicester goals.
The second half was a different affair as Reading got back into the game with a deflected
own goal at a corner on 44 minutes. Susie Gilbert equalised from a set piece on 51
minutes and Emily Maguire gave Reading the points with another corner conversion ten
minutes later. This result and others mean that Leicester drop down to seventh but only
two points off a play-off place and keeps Reading top on goal difference against
Canterbury. Canterbury however narrowed this deficit with a 9-0 win at bottom of the
table Olton. Nikki Kidd led the way with four goals and there were five other players on
target.
Clifton maintained their great start to the season which sees them unbeaten in eight
matches. On Saturday they overcame spirited opposition from ninth placed Sutton
Coldfield to win 2-1. Emily Kirkham opened the scoring for Clifton on ten minutes and Els
Mansell, a regular name on the score sheet this season made it two on 57 minutes.
Sutton scored with two minutes remaining through Gemma Brown but Clifton held on to
keep hold of third place.
Clifton are a point ahead of Surbiton who went above Bowdon Hightown into fourth
when they beat the Cheshire side 4-0. Sarah Page scored twice for Surbiton with Georgie
Twigg and Jemma Woolven also on target.
The bottom half of the table is a mini-Midlands league with the teams from sixth to tenth
all from the region. There was a derby at University of Birmingham where the students
took on Beeston and it was the promoted side who took the honours winning 3-2, a
result that lifts them to sixth. Beeston, who have made a solid start to top flight hockey,
took a three goal lead by early in the second half through Sophie Robinson, Hannah
Wraith and Phoebe Richards. Birmingham hit back with goals from Abigail Porter and
Rebecca Condie but couldn’t find an equaliser.
It was a good week for leaders Holcombe in Investec Conference East who won and also
saw their two nearest rivals lose ground. Holcombe travelled to Old Loughtonians who
were third going into Saturday’s games and came away with a 4-0 win including a first
goal for the club by international Laura Unsworth. Second placed East Grinstead, who
won at Holcombe last time out, were surprisingly beaten 4-2 by lowly Horsham. Things
looked good for EG at half time who lead 2-0 having scored at the beginning and end of
the half. However Horsham came back in the second period with Jess Dean and then two
for Steph Dent turning the game around. A last minute corner from Courtney Pickford
settled things in their favour. This extended Horsham’s advantage over bottom of the
table Chelmsford who lost 2-1 at home to Sevenoaks. A solitary Angie Wheelhouse goal
was enough to give Harleston the points over Ipswich and St. Albans beat Wimbledon 31.
The top two met in Investec Conference North and it was Wakefield who ran out winners
beating University of Durham 2-1 to take over the top spot. All the goals came in a busy
four minute period early in the second half. Wakefield’s new signing, international Sally
Walton, scored both of her side’s goals on 40 and 44 minutes with Laura Bevan having
put the students on level terms for two minutes. Wakefield are now a point ahead of
Durham and Brooklands Poynton who go second thanks to a fine 3-2 win at
Loughborough University. Brooklands came from behind twice and won the game with a
Nikki Tipping goal with five minutes left. Stourport, who have adapted well to the switch
from West to North enjoyed a 2-1 at Whitley Bay & Tynemouth. Newcomers Kendal
secured their second league win in a 4-1 defeat of Doncaster which leaves the Yorkshire
side second bottom. At the foot of the table Boots will be delighted with a first point,
earned in a 0-0 draw at Ben Rhydding.
Investec Conference West leaders Slough stay out in front thanks to a 5-0 win at bottom
of the table Exe. Ashleigh Ball, another international plying her trade outside of the top
flight, scored a hat-trick for Slough. Second placed Buckingham got their season back on
track after back to back losses beating Isca University 2-0. Trojans took their winning
streak up to five in a 3-2 defeat of Firebrands and they go third as Swansea City drop
back having been held 0-0 by Gloucester City. Two Lucy Stewart goals helped Oxford
Hawks to a 3-0 win over Barnes.
