workamongtheCherokeeatSpringplace
MissioninnorthGeorgia.WhentheU.S.
governmentorderedtheCherokeefromtheir
homeinGeorgiatoOklahoma,theMoravian
missionariesfoughtthemove.Whentheywere
overruled,themissionariesrefusedtotravel
withtheCherokeeonwhathasbecomeknown
astheTrailofTearsbecausetheyfeltthat
meanttheyapprovedoftheplan.Insteadthey
wenttoOklahomaaheadoftheCherokee,and
establishedamissiontheycalledNew
Springplace.TheMoravianskeptdiligent
recordsoftheirmissionaryworkwith
Cherokees.Dr.Crewshastranslatedthearchaic
GermanscriptintoEnglishsothatwemayhave
anaccountofthishistory.Theserecords
constitutetheonlyknownaccountofdailylife
intheCherokeenation.
